Free Webinar Provides Critical Tools & Resources for Child Care Providers, Benefiting Working Parents, Employers & Children

    Press Release

    updated: Aug 2, 2021

As the workforce settles into more remote and hybrid schedules, Child Care centers need to be prepared to better support parents, including part-time and drop-in care.

“Licensed Child Care is trying very hard to find its ‘new normal,’” said Cindy Lehnhoff, Director of the National Child Care Association (NCCA) a national nonprofit advocacy and center accreditation organization. “Unfortunately, we lost over 100,000 members of our Child Care workforce during the peak of COVID-19 and many are not returning to work.”

In an effort to provide Child Care centers the insight, resources & enrollment tools they need to handle this shift, TOOTRiS – a tech startup that connects parents, Child Care providers, and employers via a real-time platform – has partnered with the NCCA for a free webinar on Wednesday, August 4. “Building Your Business Back” will focus on new working parent schedules and how businesses use TOOTRiS to support their employees with Child Care resources and cost-sharing.

“The lack of qualified Child Care staff and centers will keep parents home and employers without enough employees to meet the needs of their business as we strive to return to ‘normal,’” Lehnhoff said. “We are excited to have TOOTRiS present its innovative approach to support our Child Care workforce and families.”

Nearly 8 million Americans say the main reason they’re still unemployed is because they are caring for children not in school or daycare, according to Household Pulse survey data from the U.S. Census Bureau. By having the right tools and resources, Child Care providers can become more accommodating to fluctuating schedules of parents returning to work while increasing their enrollments.

“Parents are tired and frustrated by the broken Child Care system. They need a flexible and real-time platform that gives them access to convenient, affordable and on-demand Child Care,” said TOOTRiS Chief Data Officer Eric Cutler, who will be leading the webinar. “By supporting Child Care providers, we’re also supporting working parents and businesses, while helping our economy recover and preparing our children for a successful future.”

Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art & Math Critical to Early Childhood Learning

    Press Release

    updated: Jul 1, 2021

The San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum has named TOOTRiS CEO Alessandra Lezama to its Board of Directors to help the nonprofit fulfill its mission to promote fluency in science, technology, reading, engineering, art, and math (STREAM) among young learners.

While STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) has been at the forefront of education to prepare the future workforce, the San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum is focusing more broadly on STREAM content to serve a broader need in the community.

“Since we serve the littlest of learners, reading must be part of every aspect of their learning; we incorporate art as a platform to teach science, technology, engineering, and math concepts,” said Krishna Kabra, the Museum’s Executive Director. ”It is essential that all young children see themselves as capable of learning and understanding these fundamental concepts. Our goal is to help them build a lifelong interest in these areas. We believe we can, and we will reduce inequities in early childhood STREAM education.”

Originally founded in 1999 in Escondido as a traveling education program in science and art, the Museum now provides hands-on educational exhibits and programs focusing on science, art, and world cultures for over 100,000 annual visitors, including children, families and school groups.

Since being named Executive Director in August 2020, Kabra – who has more than 20 years of experience in the corporate world – has reconfigured the Museum’s programs as virtual and distance-learning formats due to the pandemic.  By offering free, online activities, the Museum reached over 900,000 people from around the world via social media; distributed 3,200 free, hands-on science and art activity kits to local library branches; and served 4,378 local students through virtual workshops.

The Museum also established partnerships with the Oceanside Unified School District, San Diego Public Library Branches, and the Humane Society through virtual and distance-learning program offerings. The Museum is in the process of reopening safely onsite, and, in the fall, will resurrect its Mobile Museum that visits communities throughout the San Diego region. The Museum plans to continue offering virtual programming to reach more children and families.

“I applaud Krishna’s leadership and her ability to pivot the Museum’s programs and offerings to ensure our children continue to have an innovative and fun learning platform and experience,” said Lezama, who founded TOOTRiS in 2019 as a first-of-its-kind SaaS platform for on-demand Child Care. “I am honored to join the San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum Board and support its mission to make sure every child has an opportunity to blossom and succeed.”

Lezama, a seasoned technology executive, joins a Board of Directors that includes local business leaders and entrepreneurs who serve as advocates and ambassadors for the Museum.

“We are incredibly fortunate to have Alessandra on the team,” Kabra said. ”She is the ultimate passionate leader and powerhouse, and brings a tremendous amount of vision, expertise, and ambition. The Museum is at a critical point of inflection, and as we embark upon our next phase of growth, we need exemplary leaders like Alessandra to join us at the helm. She is courageous and committed, willing to lean in, roll her sleeves up, and do what it takes to guide the Museum to the next level. We have big, bold, audacious goals as an organization.”

New Alliance Will Enable Nonprofit to Better Support Key Staff Across Eight Locations

    Press Release

    updated: Jun 15, 2021

The San Diego Regional Center (SDRC), a leader in the community for persons with developmental disabilities, has partnered with TOOTRiS to provide real-time Child Care services to its employees. With this partnership, SDRC’s staff of more than 600 will have access to thousands of local Child Care providers through the TOOTRiS’ platform, removing barriers that prevent working parents from remaining in the workforce and advancing their family-friendly work environment.

As a first-of-its-kind SaaS platform, TOOTRiS connects parents, Child Care providers, employers, and subsidy programs all in real time. One of TOOTRiS’ goals is to create sustainable, systematic change for greater equality. Child Care challenges cause one in four women to leave the workforce and costs employers millions of dollars each year in turnover, lost productivity, and absenteeism. Over the last year, nearly 3 million women dropped out of the workforce across America, many due to the lack of Child Care. With a staff of more than 65% women, SDRC recognizes that Child Care support is key for long-term success, and its partnership with TOOTRiS is a win-win solution for the organization and the community.

“Through this partnership with TOOTRiS, our employees now have access to the only real-time Child Care benefits solutions available, ensuring our employees have access to quality Child Care so they can thrive at our organization,” said Carlos Flores, San Diego Regional Center Executive Director. “By providing an affordable Child Care service and increasing Child Care availability and visibility for families, TOOTRiS creates a level playing field so that all working parents, regardless of economic status, location, or schedule, have a chance to pursue professional growth.”

“When employees are provided access to Child Care benefits, they are not forced to choose between a paycheck and their child,” said Alessandra Lezama, CEO of TOOTRiS. “Families in San Diego with two working parents spend up to 40% of their income on Child Care. That is excessively high. The San Diego Regional Center has always been a forward-thinking nonprofit, dedicated to providing the best services for our community. By offering Child Care as part of its existing employee wellness program, the organization will significantly improve productivity, career advancements, and employee retention, allowing SDRC to continue its amazing work.”

ChildcareFORMS Gives Childcare Providers a Simpler, Paperless Way to Register Families

    Press Release

    updated: Mar 18, 2021

Managing enrollment paperwork is time-consuming and cumbersome, particularly for childcare businesses wanting to focus their time on the children in their care. To help simplify and automate the registration process for childcare providers, ChildcareCRM, the leader in childcare customer relationship management (CRM) software for more than 10 years, has launched ChildcareFORMS to streamline the registration process.

Millennials are quickly becoming the world’s most numerous generation, and the number of Millennials who are becoming parents is growing. A recent study conducted by the Pew Research Center found that 80% of today’s parents to children under the age of 12 are Millennials. These parents expect convenience in everything they do from registering for childcare to receiving text reminders.

“With ChildcareFORMS, our customers will not only save a significant amount of time chasing down registration paperwork and completing missing information but also have easy access to completed registration documents within ChildcareCRM,” said Matt Amoia, CEO at ChildcareCRM. “Parents also save time with anywhere, anytime access to childcare registration along with e-signature, saving them a trip to drop off paperwork at the childcare center.”

    Key Benefits

    • Register families online. ChildcareCRM has scoured hundreds of enrollment packets to create an industry-standard packet — available digitally. Childcare providers can easily collect family information, emergency contact information, consent and agreements, medical information, and necessary state forms.
    • Ensure forms are complete every time. ChildcareFORMS enforces required fields to capture all necessary information. Forms are pre-filled with contact information from ChildcareCRM to give parents a head start on completion.
    • Review packets anywhere, anytime. Childcare providers can access completed enrollment packets in ChildcareCRM as a PDF attachment. Or, run a report to view all completed enrollment packets.
    • Make it convenient for families. With ChildcareFORMS, families get anytime, anywhere access to their enrollment packet. Parents can easily e-sign the packet — no faxing or dropping off required.
    • Automate communications. Childcare providers can save time on enrollment communications with automated emails and text messages, reminders, and post-enrollment follow-up communications.

  • LA Nannies Are Being Excluded From Vaccine Phase 1B

LA Nannies Are Being Excluded From Vaccine Phase 1B

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: Mar 4, 2021

The team at Westside Nannies, a leading nanny agency in the Los Angeles area, is expressing grave and valid concerns over the fact that Los Angeles private nannies are being excluded from Vaccine Phase 1B, despite their clear roles as essential childcare workers.

On March 1, Phase 1B of the COVID-19 vaccine rollout in California began, which included vaccinations for childcare workers across the state. However, the Los Angeles County Public Health Department quietly made a change expressly excluding private nannies and babysitters from the definition of childcare workers. Under this exclusion, nannies across the county are prohibited from getting the vaccine with all the other childcare workers.

“These are hardworking men and women who have been putting their lives on the line every day without a choice,” said Katie Provinziano, Managing Director at Westside Nannies. “Nannies provide care for children, including assisting with online schooling and ensuring parents can work to support their families. It’s an insulting shock that nannies were considered ‘essential’ during the lockdown, but they are now being overlooked when it comes to getting the vaccine.”

This exclusion also adversely affects caregivers, many of whom are people of color. Currently, Phase 1B includes individuals who are 65 and older, agriculture and food workers, education and childcare workers and those who work in emergency services. The agency hopes that the county reverses this decision and allows private nannies to get vaccinated since they are, in fact, childcare workers. Until then, the Westside Nannies team is reaching out to elected officials.

“It is time that domestic workers stop being disregarded,” said Provinziano. “Excluding nannies from the childcare worker phase is absolutely unacceptable and brings a tremendous amount of inequity.”

All children deserve to start off life with every possible advantage. One of the best advantages children have is early childhood education.

    Press Release

    updated: Feb 22, 2021

The Tangipahoa Parish School system was awarded a grant to establish a unique “Ready Start Network” to pilot a state program to increase early childhood education access and improve quality.

Tangipahoa Parish School System has received a grant from the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education to pilot new strategies to increase access to and improve the quality of publicly funded early childhood care and education. It is one of 13 communities joining as a third cohort and one of 26 total communities to lead this work statewide.

The communities, called Ready Start Networks, will develop new local governance structures; assess local demand for early care and education; provide resources and training for teachers to improve classroom quality; implement fundraising strategies, and share their findings with state leaders to inform future policymaking.

Due to this grant, Early Learning Tangipahoa rebranded to Ready Start Tangipahoa with the launch of their new website in the fall of 2020.

Ready Start Tangipahoa will do this by:
Equipping each classroom with quality, Tier I curriculum by May 2023.
Increasing overall CLASS scores in each classroom by .5 for veteran teachers and .2 for novice teachers by 2023.
Increasing parent accessibility, involvement, and awareness of resources in Tangipahoa Early Childhood by May 2023.
Expanding access and enrollment to early learning for children aged birth to three in quality centers by 20%, at the end of 2023.

All children deserve to start off life with every possible advantage. One of the best advantages children have is early childhood education.

“Ready Start Tangipahoa enables children, parents, and businesses to succeed,” said  Early Childhood Coordinator Carmen Brabham M.Ed., NBCT. “Children benefit and grow by having consistent socialization and education. Parents have reliable childcare and can work or attend school while knowing their children are flourishing. Businesses have less employee absenteeism because their employees’ children have dependable, quality childcare. It’s a win for everyone in the community!”

BabyLook-Remo is a multilingual parenting support service that allows users to search for the best remote childcare providers, pregnancy, and birthing caregivers. The service will be available beginning Dec. 12 and will feature a variety of prenatal and neonatal professionals such as doulas, therapists, midwives, nurses, and pediatricians to assist parents throughout pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and early parenting.

Users can begin their search on the BabyLook website which features HIPPA compliant technologies and web-services. BabyLook-Remo is aimed at parents ranging from pregnant to parents of 4-5-year-old infants. • New Program Available to Train Pod School Leaders

New Program Available to Train Pod School Leaders

    [ad_1]

Around the country, school districts are announcing that in-person school is canceled because of Covid-19 and that, until further notice, their schools will be using an entirely virtual model. Parents are in panic mode: They need childcare for the fall, and they need it now. Many parents are pursuing the solution of “Learning Pods”, sometimes called Microschools, where they form or join a small group program in which their children will work on their online schooling together – in person.

Ann Arbor mom and national summer camp consultant Sarah Kurtz McKinnon recognized that parents and organizations are also hiring “Learning Pod Leaders” who will manage the day-to-day operations of these pods. These leaders are part camp counselor, academic tutor, and group manager. They have a specialized and important job, but it’s also an unprecedented one: Pandemic Pods are completely new, and none of these leaders have had training specific to their new job.

To solve this problem, Kurtz McKinnon has recruited a team of youth development and education experts to create a comprehensive, self-paced virtual training program for Pod Leaders called Pod School Prep (www.podschoolprep.com). Pod School Prep covers crucial topics for Pod Leaders, such as working with parents, group dynamics, pedagogical techniques, mental health, child abuse prevention and making a Pod fun.

“Joining or forming a Learning Pod is an appealing solution for many parents in this incredibly difficult situation,” Kurtz McKinnon says. “But Pods will only be successful if the Pod Leaders are trained in how to do this challenging and important job.”

Pod School Prep will also provide personalized coaching for Pod Leaders. Whether the group is having an issue with bullying, a particular student is unmotivated, or the Pod Leader needs new ideas to keep kids engaged, Pod School Prep is ready to provide ongoing support and resources to these important caregivers.

Kurtz McKinnon says that Pod School Prep is also focusing its efforts on equity and access. Kurtz McKinnon and her team are offering grants and pursuing partnerships with organizations such as nonprofits and school districts to help get their Learning Pod programs launched and their staff members trained effectively so that more kids and working parents have viable options for the fall.

“There are many families and community organizations who are ready to start a learning pod program but need the additional support to do so,” Kurtz McKinnon says. “Pod School Prep is here to make sure that the people caring for our kids are ready to help them not just pass the time but make sure they learn, grow and thrive.”

About Pod School Prep: Pod School Prep (www.podschoolprep.com) is a comprehensive, online professional development program for Learning Pod Leaders.

Requests for rental assistance and food are on the rise in Jackson County with no sign of abating since COVID-19 showed up in the region. That’s according to 211info, a free, confidential referral and information service that connects area residents to local health and human services.

In March, 211info saw a 30% increase in web searches from the Medford region over the previous month. Since then, the nonprofit has fielded hundreds of calls from area residents hardest hit by the economic downturn. The greatest needs? Rent and housing assistance, food, and smoking cessation support.

This doesn’t come as a surprise to Carrie Prechtel, who spent three years serving as 211info’s Community Engagement Coordinator in Jackson and Josephine Counties. “Even before the pandemic, one in three renters in Jackson County were spending more than half their income on rent, leaving little margin for basic living expenses.”

Then COVID-19 showed up in the region and with it a stay-at-home order and statewide shutdowns to help slow the spread of the virus. In the first four weeks almost 9% of the Jackson County labor force filed for unemployment.

As to the increase in requests for smoking cessation support, Dan Herman, 211info’s Chief Executive Officer suspects it may have to do with concerns over the toll COVID-19 can take on even a healthy individual’s lungs. As Oregon Health Authority’s designated COVID-19 hotline for the state, 211info also serves as a central resource for area residents looking for information about the novel coronavirus, including symptoms to look for, where to receive care and how to get tested.

And even though 211info has been in the region for several years now, community members are likely to see more prominent reminders of the nonprofit’s presence. That’s because 211info recently launched an awareness campaign in Jackson County to ensure community members know where they can go for help to get their needs met.

Herman says the agency takes beloved television personality Mr. Rogers’ “Look for the helpers” mantra to heart: “At 211info we’re all about looking for the helpers — and all about connecting members of our community with that help for free. That’s why we work side-by-side with community partners to connect Jackson County residents with resources when they need them the most.”

211info works closely with a number of community partners in Jackson County including Head Start for Jackson County, Jackson County Continuum of Care, the City of Medford, United Way of Jackson County, ACCESS and Maslow Project, among others.

About 211info: 211info is a nonprofit organization funded by state and municipal contracts, foundations, United Ways, donations and community partners in Oregon and Southwest Washington. Learn more at 211info.org.

Discovery Point Announces 48th Location and First Bradenton, FL Site

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: Jun 8, 2020

Discovery Point, a leading educational child care franchise, announces an agreement for a new center in Bradenton, Florida.

The Bradenton center will be owned and operated by Dr. Roger Clough and Mrs. Robin Clough and is scheduled to open in late 2020. Roger and Robin are originally from upstate New York. They have two teenage children, McKenzie and Owen. The Cloughs are excited about moving to Florida and to open a new Discovery Point.

“We’re delighted to welcome Roger and Robin into the Discovery Point family. We’re pleased to be able to introduce our high-quality brand of child care to a new community,” said Cliff Clark, Discovery Point Founder and CEO. “We are looking forward to seeing how the Cloughs implement their vision to meet the specific needs of Bradenton parents and their children.”

Having been a Superintendent of Schools for 11 years in New York State, Dr. Clough brings educational experience and expertise to Discovery Point. During his tenure, he helped implement several successful new programs for younger-aged children. These include broadening Pre-Kindergarten, introducing Junior Kindergarten, and adding reading teachers in all elementary schools within his district. He also helped establish a STEM program in the elementary schools and helped create after-school and mentoring programs for young children.

Throughout his career, Dr. Clough’s passion has been to engage and educate the next generation.

“I have always been inspired by the notion that the measure of a civilization is how it treats its youngest members,” says Dr. Clough. “Children should experience a learning environment that will help them grow from an infant to an adult. I feel the curriculum programs created by Discovery Point will help nurture so many children at an early age and provide them with the tools they need to succeed in the future.”

While her husband’s background is in education, Robin Clough worked for the United States Customs Service and Homeland Security for 25 years. Her roles included a wide variety of administrative and management duties essential to the daily operation of Homeland Security Investigations.

“My wife and I are excited to become a part of the Discovery Point family and to help grow the franchise. Even more so, we’re excited to help every child that we have in our center and to develop a strong connection with the families we serve.”

The Bradenton location marks the 48th active Discovery Point center and its 13th in Florida. Discovery Point centers have a distinctive design that incorporates years of childcare experience into their construction and layout. Features include an open floor plan with clear sightlines, easy access between classrooms, and efficient use of multi-purpose spaces. The Bradenton center will be an updated version of Discovery Point’s traditional center layout – the first location to retrofit an existing building into a child care center. Construction of the Bradenton center is set to begin in the summer of 2020.

New Report Finds One in Three Illinois Households Can’t Afford Basic Needs

    [ad_1]

Over one million working households in the state live above the poverty line but still don’t earn enough for necessities

    Press Release

    updated: Mar 4, 2020

Thirty-six percent of Illinois households have incomes below the state’s cost of living, according to new data from the report “ALICE in Illinois: A Financial Hardship Study.” The report was funded by the United Way of Illinois and led by Dr. Stephanie Hoopes, Director of the ALICE project, a national research initiative.

ALICE, an acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed, are households that earn more than the Federal Poverty Level, but less than the basic cost of living for the state (the ALICE Threshold). Of Illinois’ 4,817,547 households, 12 percent earn below the Federal Poverty Level and another 24 percent are ALICE households.

“People living below the ALICE Threshold live and work in our communities, but struggle to stay afloat financially,” said Sue Grey, Board Chair of United Way of Illinois and President and CEO of United Way of Champaign County. “Low wages, the need to string together multiple part-time or contract jobs to get sufficient working hours, and the high cost of living in our state mean that many working people, from cashiers to cleaners, aren’t making enough to get by. This impacts all of us, as people living below the ALICE Threshold do not have the disposable income to support and drive the state economy.”

A mismatch between wages and cost of living contributes to the problem. Statewide, the Household Survival Budget for two adults and two young children requires one full-time income at an hourly wage of $28.57, but 56 percent of jobs in Illinois pay less than $20 per hour.

Despite the documented economic recovery, the share of Illinois households living below the ALICE Threshold increased between 2007 and 2017, the latest year for which data is available. In 2007, 31 percent of Illinois households were below the ALICE Threshold. By 2017, that number had climbed to 36 percent. In Chicago, 43 percent of households are below the ALICE Threshold.

“The United Way’s critical report on the hardship facing so many Chicagoans fills an important data gap on the working families throughout our city struggling to make ends meet every day,” said Chicago Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot. “Their challenge is our City’s challenge, and my team will partner with United Way’s leadership to advance our shared agenda to end economic hardship and grow and strengthen the middle class in Chicago.”

ALICE households exist throughout all parts of Illinois and include people of all ages, races and ethnicities, and educational levels. However, Black and Hispanic households are more likely than White and Asian households to be below the ALICE threshold.

“This problem can’t be solved with one change, because the high cost of living is driven by many factors,” Grey said. “Government agencies, nonprofits, communities and businesses need to work together to create change that improves the quality of life for the ALICE population and our communities across Illinois as a whole.”

For the full report, including a county-by-county breakdown of the data, as well as information on the largest cities and towns in Illinois and specific Chicago neighborhoods, visit unitedwayillinois.org/ALICE. United Way of Illinois (UWI) is a statewide association of local United Way organizations representing communities across Illinois. UWI fights to create lasting community change by helping children and youth succeed in school, promoting financial stability and family independence and improving the health of all Illinois residents.

United For ALICE is a driver of innovation, shining a light on the challenges ALICE households face and seeking collaborative solutions. Through a standardized methodology that assesses the cost of living in every county, this project provides a comprehensive look at financial hardship across the United States.

US Nanny Association Establishes National Nanny Standards

    [ad_1]

Clearly defining Basic and Professional in-home childcare skills, the US Nanny Association National Standards and credential programs make it easier for families to identify knowledgeable and experienced childcare providers.

    Press Release

    updated: Oct 30, 2019

The US Nanny Association published National Nanny Standards, creating a significant step forward in defining career paths for sitters and nannies. “The National Nanny Standards reduce confusion about the differences between sitters, nannies and professional nannies,” shares Elizabeth Malson, Executive Director of the US Nanny Association. “These standards establish a common set of expectations for training and experience, making it easier for families and childcare providers to connect and engage.”

The National Nanny Standards include diverse, proven methodologies and childcare skills that align with the differing needs of families, parenting customs and laws in the United States. “Traditionally, nannies in the United States were trained by other nannies or owners of nanny agencies due to a lack of government regulation and limited industry guidelines,” shares Heather Pentz, Director of Nanny Agency Services. “The National Nanny Standards define the skills needed to be successful and to support a career progression that aligns with families seeking childcare services.”

The National Nanny Standards are the foundation of the Basic Nanny and Childcare Provider (BNCP) Credential and the Professional Nanny and Childcare Provider (PNCP) Credential. The BNCP and PNCP credentials test to the National Nanny Standards and recognize nannies who have completed reputable training programs and have gained valuable work experience. Establishing National Standards and creating credential programs that require training, work experience, and proficiency testing empowers nannies to earn respected credentials that are on par with other trades and industries.

The US Nanny Association National Nanny Standards were developed by childcare educators and industry leaders. Research-based, the National Nanny Standards align with early childhood development post-secondary curriculums, the National Council for Curriculum and Assessments, the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the US Center for Disease Control (CDC), and the US Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service (USDA-FNS).

Amslee Institute Survey Identifies Top Issues Facing Nannies and Family-Employers

    [ad_1]

Nannies seek top dollar with limited childcare credentials while families seek Nanny Poppins for $10 per hour

    Press Release

    updated: May 15, 2019

Working relationships and qualifications are the top issues, but nannies and family-employers face non-traditional work environment challenges including safety, privacy and job duties. According to Amslee Institute’s Nanny Survey 2019, 74 percent of nannies believe only three years of experience are needed to be a professional nanny. Moreover, 63 percent of nannies do not have a college degree and eight percent feel experience is the only qualification needed to be a professional nanny. Working in a non-traditional environment, 33 percent of nannies have felt unsafe and 67 percent would not report infidelity.

Unlike other professions, being a professional nanny in the United States does not require educational or childcare degrees, advanced training, internships or any designated skills or experience. “Traditionally, nannies in the United States have been trained by other nannies and nanny agency owners through workshops because there are no government regulations or standards,” shares Elizabeth Malson, president of Amslee Institute. “Comprehensive online programs are now available and provide nannies greater access and flexibility to invest in quality training and continuing education.”

To qualify for top jobs, a professional nanny historically invested in an associate’s or bachelor’s degree. These options required a significant financial investment and time commitment for a two- or four-year college program in an industry with starting wages at the federal and state minimums. Meeting collegiate standards with faculty-taught classes, Amslee Institute provides comprehensive online Childcare Diploma and Certification programs. These nanny-specific programs are designed for in-home childcare and require a lower financial investment than traditional college courses and take no more than 12 weeks to complete.

    What Differentiates Sitters and Nannies?

Families often equate nannies and sitters, failing to understand the difference in childcare skills. Families viewing childcare as a supervisory position requiring little training or experience offer $8-15 an hour and are best served by sitters. Families who view in-home childcare as an extension of the child’s education and development are more willing to pay $15-30+ per hour and seek nannies with specialized skills and training. These families seek a childcare provider who can invest in the social, physical, emotional and intellectual development of their children. Distinguishing the job responsibilities between child supervision and child development differentiates sitters from nannies.

Amslee Institute found that 59 percent of nannies believe families seek candidates with college-level training (Childcare Diploma and Certification, Early Childhood Education Associate or Bachelor Degree). Nannies report that their family-employers support childcare training and continuing education with 52 percent of families currently paying for training, 31 percent of families are willing to pay for training and only 17 percent are not willing to pay for training.

    What Defines a Professional Nanny?

There is no standard definition for “professional nanny.” In general, 75 percent of nannies surveyed feel family-employers respect the nanny profession but nannies often do not feel respected in their individual employment situations. Unlike certified nursing assistants, beauticians and teachers, all of whom must have a license or defined credentials, being a nanny does not legally require any training. Thus, families are not able to easily identify quality in-home childcare as there is no standardization of terms including nanny, professional nanny and family assistant. Adding to the confusion, several organizations offer professional nanny certifications without requiring training, references or proof of childcare experience. Thus, hiring a “professional” nanny may not satisfy families and declaring oneself a “professional” nanny may not help nannies achieve their desired compensation.

Is It Safe to Be a Nanny?

Most nannies feel safe working in the family’s home; however, 33 percent of nannies report feeling unsafe on the job. Verbal or emotional abuse was the most commonly reported issue (27 percent), followed by being physically threatened (11 percent), discriminated against (11 percent) and sexually harassed (nine percent).

    Do Nannies Keep Family Secrets?

Although confidentiality and non-disclosure agreements are increasingly common as a condition of employment for nannies, families without these agreements still expect a certain level of privacy. Regarding extra-marital activities, 67 percent of nannies would not report infidelity even with first-hand knowledge and only 33 percent would confront the spouse or partner engaging in infidelity.

Privacy issues also arise from the nanny’s position in the family structure. Nannies and family employers often struggle to maintain boundaries as they build a familial-style working relationship. When asked about their preferred relationship with the family, 39 percent of nannies want to be treated as an equal in the family, not an employee. When the same group was asked which best describes their relationship with the family employer, 76 percent of nannies feel they are treated as a family member or close friend. Casual friendship was selected 11 percent and an employee relationship was selected 13 percent. The close relationships often blur the bounds of privacy and professionalism.

What Household Work is Part of the Nanny’s Job?

Every nanny job is customized to a specific family, creating different duties and levels of responsibility. Nannies sign up for childcare but less than half (48 percent) of nannies feel their fundamental responsibilities include housekeeping skills (such as laundry, dishwashing, vacuuming) not directly tied to childcare. Only 14 percent of nannies feel their responsibilities include pet care, grocery shopping or other family services.

Nannies often struggle with expanding job responsibilities and frequently have difficulty getting compensated for additional work. Families may ask nannies to work longer hours and/or complete tasks that were not originally defined in the job description. When this occurs, a discussion between the nanny and family-employer is essential to ensure complete understanding and alignment on the scope and compensation of the job.

About the Amslee Institute Nanny Survey 2019

The Nanny Survey 2019 identifies and helps families and nannies manage the unique challenge of in-home childcare. Capturing the responses of more than 64 nannies in the United States during the month of October 2018, the Nanny Survey 2019 is shared with the childcare community to increase engagement and communication in a positive manner that advances in-home care of children.

Daily exposure to Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics at Children’s Learning Adventure

    Press Release

    updated: Oct 5, 2018

Children’s Learning Adventure enables students to discover their true potential through STEAM-based learning. They encourage their students to take an innovative approach to learning with a wide variety of science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics activities. This supports students with the development of both their problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. As students engage in daily exposure to STEAM-based learning, Children’s Learning Adventure supports and enhances every child’s opportunity for success and the ability to apply newly learned skills while developing in all academic areas.

Children’s Learning Adventure understands that children are born with a vast capacity for learning. The early developmental years are critical for expanding a child’s brain. Their curriculum incorporates the latest brain development research and implements simple, yet intricate lessons to maximize learning for each child. STEAM-based curriculum is incorporated into all programs to ensure each child is learning valuable skills.

Science is an integral component of STEAM-based learning curriculum. Students are presented with specific instruction providing opportunities for rich vocabulary learning, collaboration with peers and acquisition of scientific knowledge. Children’s Learning Adventure’s Laboratory Lagoon® sets the stage for investigation, discovery and experimentation, enabling students to take an in-depth look into scientific procedures. Children’s Learning Adventure science curriculum engages students in hands-on learning activities to spark curiosity and open new avenues for scientific engagement.

Children are prepared to live in a technology-driven world by incorporating the use of technology into STEAM-based curriculum. Children’s Learning Adventure has brought technology into their classrooms to give their school age-students the opportunity to sharpen their technology skills through tablet-based assessments. While it is necessary for students to get this hands-on experience, they also benefit from their teachers using Smart Board Technology to improve their classroom instruction.

In providing a loving, nurturing environment, Children’s Learning Adventure helps children become confident, independent learners who develop a strong sense of self-worth, enabling them to make positive life choices. To ensure that every child has the proper tools to grow, engineering is incorporated into STEAM-based learning curriculum. Engineering is simply designing, building and using structures and machines. By infusing engineering activities into the STEAM-based curriculum, Children’s Learning Adventure builds on a child’s natural problem-solving skills, building the foundation for critical thinkers.

Children’s Learning Adventure believes students should be given the opportunity to express themselves creatively. The arts are incorporated into their STEAM-based learning curriculum through the implementation of art, music and drama lessons in the daily activities. We know that exposure to the arts is fundamental for early childhood brain development, as it allows children to express emotions and feelings in a positive and healthy way.

Mathematics provides the foundational building blocks for academic success. Mathematics can be applied to essential life skills and is incorporated into several other subjects and everyday interactions. At Children’s Learning Adventure, students develop a conceptual understanding of numbers, combinations and operations. In addition to number knowledge, students learn shapes and their structure, reasoning, measurement, classification and patterns. These mathematical skills are incorporated in the STEAM-based learning curriculum. Students gain hands-on acumen of these mathematical skills while participating each day in learning opportunities in the classroom.

Children’s Learning Adventure’s CEO Rick Sodja has encouraged his centers to embrace Lifetime Adventures® STEAM-based curriculum, based on the latest brain development research, providing children with the activities and environment to greatly impact their capacity for learning and later success.

Children’s Learning Adventure is holding open houses across all their locations on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2018. Families can stop by any time between 10 a.m.-1 p.m. To learn more about Children’s Learning Adventure or their STEAM-based curriculum, please visit www.childrenslearningadventure.com.

To develop a conceptual understanding of numbers, combinations and operations, mathematics is taught in Children’s Learning Adventure’s after school program. Mathematical knowledge is applied to classroom games and activities, making it a fun learning environment for students of all ages. This encourages students to embrace a new, positive attitude towards learning that they can apply in a traditional classroom setting. This makes subjects they may have struggled with before more enjoyable.

Children’s Learning adventure incorporates language and literacy skills into their program, as these subjects play a huge role in the growth of students. Multiple learning environments provide a large variety of language development opportunities in many subject areas. Students also reinforce their reading skills through the use of technology.

Specialty enrichment instruction provides opportunities for rich vocabulary learning, collaboration with peers and acquisition of scientific knowledge in science and social studies. Students develop an understanding for themselves, their families and communities through “Community Connections” activities.

Children’s Learning Adventure has specifically designed their classrooms with school-age students in mind. Although the school-age program is structured, students have time to spend with their friends. Social-emotional character development occurs when students are encouraged to develop positive relationships with one another. Students create these relationships by reporting to their age-specific homeroom, visiting with friends, engaging in homeroom activities and rotating through specialty enrichment classes.
