Three women face charges after a 6-year-old girl died in east Charlotte.

    Mecklenburg Trial Court Administrator’s Office

Three women have been charged in the death of a 6-year-old girl whom police found scarred and weighing just 27 pounds earlier this month, court records show.

A medical examiner found the girl, Dominique Moody, had a number of injuries by the time she died. They included burn scars; fractures to her ribs; and wounds from “prolonged sitting in urine/feces-soiled items, such as a diaper, for extensive periods of time,” according to an affidavit filed by Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.

Other children at the east Charlotte home told detectives Moody’s legal guardian, Tonya McKnight, forced the girl to live in a dog crate, the affidavit said.

Police went to the three-bedroom home after McKnight called for help on Dec. 16.

It was “extremely unkempt” and had a “strong odor of feces and urine,” the affidavit said. It was cluttered, rat-infested and had human and animal feces throughout, according to the affidavit.

McKnight faces fives child abuse charges — one felony and four misdemeanors. She is in uptown’s jail under a $2 million secured bond.

The girl’s adopted sister, Tery’n McKnight, and Susan Robinson, who also lived in the home, are also in jail. They face the same charges and are being held in the jail without bond.

In court last week, prosecutors said they were waiting on lab results, which could lead to murder by torture charges being filed, The Charlotte Observer’s news partner WSOC reported. The case nearly brought one career prosecutor to tears, according to WSOC.

  • Broward couple jailed after infants suffer broken bones

A Broward County couple was jailed as deputies investigate a nearly year-long child abuse case after their infants suffered multiple unexplained fractures and injuries.

A Broward County couple was jailed as deputies investigate a nearly year-long child abuse case after their infants suffered multiple unexplained fractures and injuries.

A Broward couple are in the midst of a puzzling, nearly year-long child-abuse case and were put behind bars Tuesday, deputies said. The pair had their infant taken away from them as authorities tried to figure out if they were at fault for the child’s broken bones.

However, while authorities tried to get to the bottom of that abuse, the couple had another baby and possibly abused that child, too, deputies said.

Kourtney Walton, 37, and Andrew Wilson, 37, were charged with one count of child neglect with great bodily harm, according to their arrest reports.

On Dec. 19, 2024, Broward County Sheriff’s deputies were alerted by the Department of Children and Families that the couple’s 6-month-old boy was being treated for “unexplained” fractures, the report read. His collarbone, a shinbone, a forearm and a thighbone were broken.

While the couple had told authorities the child did not fall and they did not harm him, doctors ruled that the injuries were consistent with “non-accidental blunt-force trauma.”

Deputies continued their investigation to see where the fault lied, but on Dec. 23, 2024, the child was removed from the parents’ custody in Juvenile Dependency Court and his grandmother was made his primary caretaker.

Walton and Wilson were allowed supervised visitations with their child, the report read.

During the next several months, deputies tried to contact the couple and their family members and friends who would have been taking care of the child. Many calls for questioning were left unanswered, including by the parents.

In June, Walton and Wilson had another boy. Deputies would later learn this child, too, was taken away from the parents and handed over to his grandmother because doctors discovered severe physical abuse.

On Tuesday, their second boy, at 4 months old, was discovered to be suffering from fractures in various stages of healing and a traumatic brain injury. Walton and Wilson again denied harming their child, but the medical professionals’ findings indicated the injuries were from “non-accidental blunt-force trauma.”

Deputies charged the couple with child neglect and causing the injuries of their first child in December. It’s unclear if authorities will file charges in relation to the injuries of their second child.

As of Friday night, Walton and Wilson both remained in the Broward County Jail.

  • Father Charged After OR Toddler’s Drowning – KXL

LINCOLN COUNTY, OR – The father of a young boy who drowned in the Siletz River earlier this year is now facing child neglect charges.

Two-year old Dane Paulsen was reported missing at the beginning of March. His family told authorities he was last seen playing in the yard of his family’s Siletz home next to the Siletz River. • Florida Keys deputy gets DUI with child in car. It’s not his first time in cuffs

Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Jesus Abdiel Rojas Burgos was pulled over near Cudjoe Key and charged with driving under the influence and child neglect; the sheriff’s office says an internal investigation is underway.

Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Jesus Abdiel Rojas Burgos was pulled over near Cudjoe Key and charged with driving under the influence and child neglect; the sheriff’s office says an internal investigation is underway.

    MCSO

A Florida Keys deputy was speeding down the road early Wednesday morning while under the influence, landing him behind bars when his own sheriff’s office pulled him over. Adding to his alleged illegal actions, he also had a child in the car.

Around 4:30 a.m., Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Jesus Abdiel Rojas Burgos was off-duty in non-law enforcement car zooming down U.S. 1 near Cudjoe Key with a child in the car, the sheriff’s office said.

It’s unclear what speed Rojas Burgos was going or his relationship to the child. When a fellow Monroe Sheriff’s deputy pulled him over, he charged Rojas Burgos with driving while under the influence and child neglect.

The child was picked up by a friend while the deputy was taken to jail.

“I am committed to the public hearing about significant incidents in the Sheriff’s Office — both positive and negative — from me first,” Monroe Sheriff Rick Ramsay said.

Rojas Burgos became a Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputy in April 2023. His continued employment is in question as authorities say an internal affairs investigation is underway.

Nearly a year after his start date, he was arrested in March 2024 after a woman accused him of grabbing her at a Key West bar. Officers noted he was “highly intoxicated” and had “a strong odor of alcoholic beverage” emitting from him.

That case does not appear on the Monroe County Clerk of Courts website, and it is unclear if any, repercussions will come from that arrest.

At the time, Sheriff Ramsay had released a nearly identical statement, adding that an investigation and “appropriate action” would be taken.

Ramsay’s 2024 statement: “I take these incidents very seriously, will investigate this matter fully, and take the appropriate action. I am committed to keeping this community informed of significant events that occur in this agency — good or bad.”

Deputies: Couple found passed out, drunk on Volusia beach while young children were in pool alone

A Georgia couple was arrested on Saturday in Volusia County after deputies say the two were intoxicated and asleep on the beach while their children were nowhere to be found. According to an arrest affidavit from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, 27-year-old Timothy Stephens was charged with two counts of child neglect. According to deputies, an anonymous caller reported to officials that a male and female on the beach appeared to “have too much to drink” and were “possibly passed out” while having two children with them. Deputies were able to locate Stephens and his fiancé, Alyssia Langley, sleeping on a towel on a Daytona beach. Deputies say there were two chairs set up around them, as well as various children’s beach toys, but there were no children in the area. Deputies say they also located several empty cans of beer, a glass bottle of Crown Royal whiskey and other unsealed alcoholic beverages. According to the affidavit, deputies attempted to talk to the couple to wake them up, but when that didn’t work, they began to nudge Stephens’ arm. When the couple still wouldn’t wake up, deputies began to yell, which finally woke the the two up. According to deputies, both were in “a state of confusion.” Deputies asked the couple if they had children with them, and it was eventually revealed that they did. When asked where they were, Stephens could not point out specific children or give their exact location, the affidavit states. Deputies then escorted the couple to a nearby pool, where VCSO said their 5-year-old and 7-year-old were swimming unsupervised. The children were unharmed and healthy, according to the affidavit. According to deputies, the children are not biologically related to Stephens, but Langley said he shares responsibility of the children with her. Deputies say Stephens assumed a legal guardian role of the children, and for this reason, “had a responsibility to ensure their safety while at the beach,” the affidavit reads. Deputies say he was “passed out, unconscious, with no idea as to the children’s whereabouts or safety on a crowded beach.” Officials also noted there was no lifeguard in the area. Stephens was placed under arrest for two counts of child neglect and possession of alcohol on the beach. While deputies attempted to gather more information from Stephens, they said he unexpectedly ran away. During the pursuit, deputies say Stephens tripped and landed in the hard, packed sand. He had to be transported to a local hospital after becoming unconscious. He was eventually released from the hospital and transported to jail without incident, deputies say. Stephens is also facing charges for the attempted escape. According to the arrest affidavit, Langley was also arrested for child neglect.

According to Fox 35 Orlando, on March 5, a 33-year-old woman named Jessica Woods was seen loitering “around an unnamed business.” Woods reportedly was accompanied by her daughter.

The outlet reports that an anonymous citizen approached the mother. Additionally, they asked if she or her daughter needed any help.

The citizen reportedly worked at the business Woods was seen standing outside of. The anonymous also noted that the mother had been spotted there for a few days.

To note, the New York Post reports that the citizen was an employee at H&R Block.

According to the anonymous citizen, Woods explained that she didn’t need any help.

Here’s What Happened To The 1-Year-Old

The anonymous citizen declined the mother’s proposal and instead offered to buy her and her daughter necessities. In response, Woods allegedly walked away and left her child.

“Woods told the citizen she did not need anything but offered to sell the child to the citizen for $500,” a press release from the Palatka Police Department stated, per New York Post. “When the citizen refused to purchase the child, Woods walked away, leaving her daughter behind.”

The citizen then took the child to the Palatka Police Department and informed authorities of the incident. According to the outlet, the department’s “victim advocate program” looked after the child until “the Department of Children and Families took custody.”

According to Fox 35 Orlando, the 1-year-old has since been placed in foster care.

Hong Kong father convicted over child neglect after 2 daughters accidentally eat CBD sweets – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

A Hong Kong court has convicted a father of ill-treating his two young daughters, who were hospitalised after they were accidentally fed sweets containing cannabidiol (CBD) at home.

The 26-year-old part-time construction worker, identified as CKW on the court document, appeared in Tuen Mun Court on Monday after pleading not guilty to three charges of possessing the illegal drug and neglecting his daughters, aged two and four.

Magistrate Raymond Wong Kwok-fai said that although no CBD sweets were found at the defendant’s home, his negligence led to his children’s accidental consumption of the drug on June 25 last year. The older daughter was admitted to an intensive care unit the same day.

“Even though the defendant has a clear record, this case is rather a serious offence and a custodial sentence will be the only option,” he said.

The court previously heard the defendant had left his children at home in the care of a family friend as he and his wife were getting a divorce at the time. The friend called an ambulance after discovering the sisters were feeling unwell.

The mother testified in court that she suspected her girls had consumed drugs in her estranged husband’s possession and had requested urine tests, which came back positive for the substance.

During the trial, the defendant said he had admitted to the crime after police threatened him, a defence argument that Magistrate Wong…
