Teachers are treasured members of society, but it is truly special educators who change the lives of their students. One such outstanding teacher is Thomas Kling, who saved dozens of students from a life of violence and poverty through the power of education, and his story is brought to life in Legacy Media’s inspiring new documentary Kling: A Teacher Who Defied The System.

Demetrius Matthew’s debut film upholds the legacy of beloved Chicago teacher Thomas Kling and his dedication to making a difference in the community. Featuring interviews with Kling himself and the very students he changed the lives of, this film is an inspiring tribute to an incredible educator and to the hard work that the teachers of America do every day — something which has been made even more apparent during the pandemic. Kling: A Teacher Who Defied The System is available soon on Amazon Prime and Tubi.

Premiering in October 2021 at the Twin Cities Film Festival, Kling is a moving snapshot of Chicago’s West Side in the 1980s. The film offers an authentic perspective with its historical footage and first-hand accounts of growing up in a time when the future was uncertain for children from disadvantaged families.

Demetrius Matthews describes his film as a love story; a love story between a teacher and his students.

“Education is a battle. Being a teacher is a battle,” says Matthews. “Mr. Kling risked everything to give me and so many other students a chance to attend high school and be successful in life. I honestly believe I wouldn’t be where I am today without him, and this film is incredibly important to me. It’s an honor to share Mr. Kling’s story with the world.”

  • Call to Action Message From Supernanny- Jo Frost for Elijah’s Law Nationally

Call to Action Message From Supernanny- Jo Frost for Elijah’s Law Nationally

    Press Release

    updated: Jul 10, 2021

In Supernanny, she’s better known as Nanny Jo. Jo Frost used problem-solving strategies, including discipline and follow-through, to assist parents in regaining control in their households. However, many didn’t know that Jo frost suffers from food allergies, non-food allergies, and asthma. The following is an open letter from Jo Frost-Supernanny in support of the Elijah-Alavi Foundation and Elijah’s Law, which is a law that tells childcare programs they must follow state food allergy guidelines and protocols to prevent, recognize and respond quickly to life-threatening anaphylactic reactions.

Jo Frost shares a heartfelt message and Call To Action support video for a little boy named Elijah-Alavi Silvera and a foundation named in his honor called, Elijah-Alavi Foundation. Little Elijah lost his life due to a tragic incident while attending his childcare center. At three years of age, Elijah had suffered an anaphylaxis reaction due to a portion of food that contained allergen given to him by an educator, causing him to pass away soon after. Now, Jo Frost wants you to know and understand the importance of severe food allergies and the law named after Elijah, called Elijah’s law, S218B. The law passed in the New York States on September 12th, 2019, requiring child care centers to follow guidelines for preventing and responding to food allergy anaphylaxis, and just recently a bill passed in Illinois, bill number HB0102, soon to be signed by the governor. Jo Frost wants others to take notice and adopt Elijah’s Law in their hometown. She mentions that “We need change, and by working better together, we can make a difference.”

“Everyone knows that no parent can ever be the same after losing a child. Since that day… that day, Almost everyone in their lives, old and new, understood Dina’s and Thomas’s process. They’ve crumbled, they have risen, they stood tall, and carried their broken hearts, always trying their best to move forward. Thomas and Dina and their son Sebastin have been through it, and I’m sure they will continue to go through it. Some people have asked them how are they doing this even in their sufferings fighting for awareness and education around food allergies. Candidly, I don’t know but, I believe that it’s the strength of their son, Elijah-Alavi, keeping them going. Thomas mentions that with almost every step they take, he can feel his knees ready to buckle from the weight of this heartbreak. Every. Single. Step. Then he remembers his other son Sebastin and kept going. Or, he’ll look to his wife, Dina, and from that moment she’d entered his life; has been the foundation from which he stands and then takes one more step, with creating an internationally accredited food allergy training with their partners, PSAs, steering policies, passing Elijah’s Law in New York State and now soon to be in others nationally, working on initiatives, working with groups, individuals and advocates, businesses and organizations to come together to do their part in helping to ensure that Elijah’s life will continue and with it increasing the likelihood that people everywhere hear about how important it is to know the signs and treat the symptoms of severe food allergies and anaphylaxis.

I implore you to understand why it’s important to have Elijah’s Law in your hometown. Elijah’s Law will ensure the proper food allergy protection and guidance are to be put in place so when you drop your kids off at their childcare centers, you will have peace of mind knowing that the staff has been properly trained to understand the signs and symptoms and how to treat anaphylaxis in the event of an emergency. Well, we are here. We are alive. We get to choose to do something. For Dina and Thomas, it’s ensuring Elijah’s life continues to have an impact on the world. It’s ensuring his presence continues to echo. You are here. You are alive. You get to choose to do something, today, every day. What will it be? “We Need Change!” And by working BETTER TOGETHER, we can make a difference.”

  • New Report Finds One in Three Illinois Households Can’t Afford Basic Needs

New Report Finds One in Three Illinois Households Can’t Afford Basic Needs

Over one million working households in the state live above the poverty line but still don’t earn enough for necessities

    Press Release

    updated: Mar 4, 2020

Thirty-six percent of Illinois households have incomes below the state’s cost of living, according to new data from the report “ALICE in Illinois: A Financial Hardship Study.” The report was funded by the United Way of Illinois and led by Dr. Stephanie Hoopes, Director of the ALICE project, a national research initiative.

ALICE, an acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed, are households that earn more than the Federal Poverty Level, but less than the basic cost of living for the state (the ALICE Threshold). Of Illinois’ 4,817,547 households, 12 percent earn below the Federal Poverty Level and another 24 percent are ALICE households.

“People living below the ALICE Threshold live and work in our communities, but struggle to stay afloat financially,” said Sue Grey, Board Chair of United Way of Illinois and President and CEO of United Way of Champaign County. “Low wages, the need to string together multiple part-time or contract jobs to get sufficient working hours, and the high cost of living in our state mean that many working people, from cashiers to cleaners, aren’t making enough to get by. This impacts all of us, as people living below the ALICE Threshold do not have the disposable income to support and drive the state economy.”

A mismatch between wages and cost of living contributes to the problem. Statewide, the Household Survival Budget for two adults and two young children requires one full-time income at an hourly wage of $28.57, but 56 percent of jobs in Illinois pay less than $20 per hour.

Despite the documented economic recovery, the share of Illinois households living below the ALICE Threshold increased between 2007 and 2017, the latest year for which data is available. In 2007, 31 percent of Illinois households were below the ALICE Threshold. By 2017, that number had climbed to 36 percent. In Chicago, 43 percent of households are below the ALICE Threshold.

“The United Way’s critical report on the hardship facing so many Chicagoans fills an important data gap on the working families throughout our city struggling to make ends meet every day,” said Chicago Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot. “Their challenge is our City’s challenge, and my team will partner with United Way’s leadership to advance our shared agenda to end economic hardship and grow and strengthen the middle class in Chicago.”

ALICE households exist throughout all parts of Illinois and include people of all ages, races and ethnicities, and educational levels. However, Black and Hispanic households are more likely than White and Asian households to be below the ALICE threshold.

“This problem can’t be solved with one change, because the high cost of living is driven by many factors,” Grey said. “Government agencies, nonprofits, communities and businesses need to work together to create change that improves the quality of life for the ALICE population and our communities across Illinois as a whole.”

For the full report, including a county-by-county breakdown of the data, as well as information on the largest cities and towns in Illinois and specific Chicago neighborhoods, visit unitedwayillinois.org/ALICE. For sources and comments, contact Walker Post at 312-955-0921 or walker@prosper-strategies.com.

United Way of Illinois (UWI) is a statewide association of local United Way organizations representing communities across Illinois. UWI fights to create lasting community change by helping children and youth succeed in school, promoting financial stability and family independence and improving the health of all Illinois residents.

United For ALICE is a driver of innovation, shining a light on the challenges ALICE households face and seeking collaborative solutions. Through a standardized methodology that assesses the cost of living in every county, this project provides a comprehensive look at financial hardship across the United States.

  • Recording Passengers: The ‘Dash Cam Dilemma’

Recording Passengers: The ‘Dash Cam Dilemma’

    Press Release

    updated: Jun 2, 2019

LegalRideshare, the only law firm in the US to focus exclusively on rideshare, is often tapped with the question of the dash cam dilemma: “can a driver record me if I don’t know about it or agree to it?”

First, it’s important to consider: “is an Uber or Lyft a private situation?” LegalRideshare will often lean on the side of “no, it’s not.” It’s comparable to taking public transportation like a bus in a major city. If passengers wouldn’t go outside and scream something absurd, they shouldn’t say it in an Uber.

Understandably, passengers are still looking for their rights to be protected, even if legally a driver can record you in the car without your consent.

So how can drivers protect themselves and make passengers feel safe?

We always recommend drivers get a sticker for the back window of your car, acknowledging there’s a dash cam (LegalRideshare have these stickers and gives them away for free). In states like Illinois, which is two-party consent, this really covers any issue that may arise. It’s also important that drivers let riders know this is for their benefit as well, in case of an accident or assault.

When does it go too far?

A few months ago a driver was livestreaming his passengers on Twitch. This is not only a breach of trust, but a guaranteed deactivation. Recording passengers in case of an accident is one thing. Using them for a reality TV show is another.

Check out LegalRideshare’s interview with ABC news where they go into more details about recording passengers.

Daystar School Announces IB Certification, Name Change to Daystar Academy and the Launch of a High School

Changes reflect continued growth of Chicago’s leader in non-denominational faith-based schooling.

    Press Release

    updated: May 10, 2019

Daystar School today announced its new name, “Daystar Academy: An IB World School,” to reflect its expanded ability to offer the highly lauded, world-leading curricular framework of an officially authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) World School. With the new name and the launch of its inaugural 9th grade class, Daystar students now have a stronger presence on the world stage and will benefit from the higher acceptance rates at universities and colleges typical of IB graduates.

An IB education prepares students to thrive in the transition from high school to college through an invigorating academic way of learning that requires initiative, organization, and follow-through, and results in students who feel comfortable being the leaders and innovators of tomorrow; the adults the world needs!

“With our commitment to producing engaged global citizens and lifelong learners, we’ve adopted a learning program that takes a global approach to understanding big ideas across disciplines,” explained Tami Doig, Head of School at Daystar Academy. “As an IB World School, Daystar Academy is committed to helping our students understand the philosophical underpinning of knowledge through the guidance of highly skilled educators who engage each student through topics of study that hone their passions and an understanding of the world around them.”

This announcement comes as the school continues to grow via the opening of a high school this fall. “Expanding our program to include high school is a logical extension that enables us to continue empowering students to positively impact the world,” shared Deena Marie Carr, Chairman of the Board at Daystar Academy. “We believe that education needs to be experienced first-hand, touched with your hands, and felt with emotion. We’ve built a program that ensures that every student embraces the world around them as their classroom, using local, national and global resources as tools for learning.”

Daystar, founded in 1997, is now fully authorized to offer the IB Middle Years Program (MYP) for grades 6-10 and a candidate school for the Pre-K through grade 5 Primary Years Program (PYP). Daystar will offer the IB Diploma Program for high school as the launch class ages up to the Diploma Program grades of 11 and 12.

Daystar Academy is hosting an open house for prospective high school students on Monday, May 13 at 7pm. Daystar Academy is accepting applications for fall 2019 for preschool through grade 9.

It features guard towers, prison cells and a broken down prison bus in a two-story facility with a 27,000-watt sound system. Press Release

    updated: May 2, 2017

The American Institute of Family Law Attorneys is pleased to announce and recognize the exceptional performance of Illinois’s Family Law attorney and Loyola Law School Professor Andrew “Drew” Vaughn as a two-year “10 Best” Family Law attorney winner for client satisfaction. Drew is the founder of NuVorce, LLC, the only Family Law firm where clients pay controlled fees, determined by Andrew’s own mathematical formula, for unlimited access to their attorneys.

“Being recognized by the AIOFLA two years in a row is a great honor. That said, we don’t think it’s a coincidence we have been selected as one of the top 10 Illinois Family Law firms for demonstrating the highest standards of client satisfaction. Since we started NuVorce in 2014, everything we do has supported this very effort — to make our clients happy with an entirely new approach to Family Law,” exclaimed Drew.

One of the most significant aspects of the selection process involves an attorney’s relationships and reputation among his or her clients. As clients should be an attorney’s top priority, AIOFLA places the utmost emphasis on selecting lawyers who have achieved significant success in the field of Family Law without sacrificing the service and support they provided. Selection criteria focus on attorneys who demonstrate the highest standards of client satisfaction.

Daley Plaza Announced as Official Location for Spark Chicago’s Discovery Day

Hundreds of CPS Middle School Youth and Spark Mentors to Showcase Creativity, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship at Inaugural Citywide Celebration

Spark today announced its inaugural citywide Discovery Day event will take place on Daley Plaza on June 10, 2016 to celebrate hundreds of Chicago middle school youth who are participating in workplace-based apprenticeships with Spark mentors at companies like Google, KPMG, Tyson Foods, West Monroe Partners, and more.  The event will showcase the talents of over 300 students through hands-on projects like making films, creating websites and video games, pitching new businesses, building mobile applications, robots, and more.

Discovery Day is sponsored by leading Chicago companies and is hosted by the Spark Chicago Board of Directors.  The event committee includes Charles Calloway of Chapman and Cutler LLP, Jim Evans of Entertainment Cruises, Kyla Kelly of Google, Ashley Lavin of Northern Trust, Robin Lavin of the Osa Foundation, David Leiter of KPMG, Neil Mann of Chapman and Cutler LLP, Kristina Oderinde of KPMG, Gordana Radmilovic of West Monroe Partners, and Marta Stein of McGuireWoods LLP.

“I am working with my Spark mentor Jordan on a project to make Chicago a better city for all of us,” said Armon, Spark student from North Lawndale. “I want to thank the City of Chicago for allowing Discovery Day to take place on Daley Plaza. I hope a lot of people will visit my booth to hear my ideas for our city.”

Armon, 7th Grade Spark student in North Lawndale

Since the launching of the Chicago program in 2011, Spark has served over 1,000 Chicago Public School (CPS) students. Through dynamic apprenticeships, Chicago’s youth are exploring career fields including entrepreneurship, STEM, law, architecture, and more. These workplace experiences empower students to dream big and envision themselves working in some of the nation’s top industries and companies.

Discovery Day is the culminating event of a yearlong program in which 7th and 8th graders work with volunteer mentors at the workplace.  The event will feature Spark students engaging the entire City of Chicago through interactive displays and presentations showcasing their skills in technology, business, design, and beyond.

In 2004, Spark was founded by two educators who saw early intervention as a tool to help under-resourced youth build the confidence, skills and career awareness to thrive in school and in the workforce.  Spark successfully gets students on track in key areas of attendance, behavior, and grades. What’s more, Spark students transition to high school at rates higher than their counterparts. Evidence shows that by combining project-based learning with engaging mentors in the workplace and a 21st century skill-building curriculum, Spark students enter high school engaged, on-track, and ready for success.

“Investing in Spark is a commitment to the future,” said Kathleen St. Louis Caliento, Ph.D., Executive Director of Spark Chicago. “Spark students represent the promise of tomorrow, and with the support of our partners and the Chicago community we are hopeful that we can reach even more students in the years to come.”

Spark’s leading investors in Chicago include CEB, Deloitte, Finnegan Family Foundation, Google, KPMG, Osa Foundation, Paul M. Angell Family Foundation, Polk Bros. Foundation, Pritzker Foundation, Steans Family Foundation, Tyson Foods, United Way of Metropolitan Chicago, West Monroe Partners, and Zell Family Foundation.  Starcom MediaVest Group is Spark’s media sponsor.  Spark is a proud partner of Chicago Public Schools, the City of Chicago, and Department of Family and Support Services.

Spark is grateful for support of the program and the Discovery Day event.  Individuals, corporations, foundations and organizations interested in supporting and contributing to Spark and Discovery Day can visit DiscoverSparkChicago.org.  Follow Spark on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter @SparkProgramCHI and use #DiscoverSpark to follow the Discovery Day excitement.
