There, officers found a 36-year-old man who had suffered a gunshot wound to the head and neck.

Police said the victim was pronounced dead on the scene. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office later identified him as Dennis T. Durley.

A witness told officers that a male suspect got out of a white sedan and shot the victim before returning to the vehicle and fleeing the scene.

There is no one in custody, and Area One detectives are investigating.

Police did not immediately provide further information about the shooting.

  • Chicago doctor and avid cyclist in coma after hit-and-run near Illinois Medical District, wife says

    [ad_1]

CHICAGO (WLS) — A Chicago doctor remains in the intensive care unit nine days after a suffering a brain injury in a hit-and-run crash near the Illinois Medical District.

Ray Lee is a physiatrist who specializes in spinal cord injuries, and he is avid cyclist.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

“He was biking home from work and was struck by a vehicle. It was a hit-and-run. He was somewhat conscious at the scene, but he’s been in a coma since then,” said Fani Lee, Ray’s wife. “This was his commute. It started in COVID. It was a good stress release for him, quickly became part of the biking community in Chicago. He loves it.”

Chicago police put out an alert about the hit-and-run. CPD reported that at about 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 29 at Damen and Van Buren, a red 2010 Ford Fusion sedan hit Ray. The car had an Illinois license plate reading, “BN 64959.”

Fani is an occupational therapist. She shared that it was Ray’s business was to help others recover from accidents or injuries. Now, he is the one in need of help.

“He’s just the nicest, sweetest guy. We’ve had patients, previous coworkers. ‘Everybody loves Ray,’ we always say, like the TV show,” Fani said. “The brain does heal, but it takes a very long time, so it’s going to be at least months, possibly even years before we can see if there is a full recovery. That’s what we are hoping for.”

Fani and Ray have two children and community of supporters. Fani said she is grateful for Ray’s care and for all the support, and she hopes that anyone driving in Chicago will be more aware of cyclists and their safety.

Fani said Ray was wearing a helmet that actually cracked after he was thrown 30 feet. She says he likely would not have survived if he was not wearing a helmet.

Fani and Chicago police welcome any information about who may have been driving that red car on Oct. 29.

  • Chicago-area Halloween fun kicks off with trick-or-treating, Ravenswood Monster Mash

    [ad_1]

CHICAGO (WLS) — Trick-or-treating and other fun Halloween activities for the whole family are taking place in Chicago and the suburbs on Friday night.

And if you haven’t gotten your pumpkin yet, you can still find them at the Ravenswood Monster Mash on Montrose.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

This is the first year that the Chamber of Commerce is putting on the trick-or-treat event, with all of the businesses on Montrose participating, but they expect that it will become an annual tradition.

It is a good way to load up on candy and other treats, like pizza. Chicago’s Pizza is making ghost pizzas complete with olives for the eyes and pepperoni for the mouth.

Organizers say this event is designed to encourage kids and their parents to enjoy the neighborhood.

“It’s kind of a sure thing. If there’s an event, there will be candy; there will be trick-or-treaters,” said Christina Pecce with the Ravenswood Chamber of Commerce.

ABC7 has seen a bunch of costumed kids and their parents up and down the street there.

Monsters are also guarding the candy in Northbrook.

More than 70 of them surround Howard Wise’s home, attracting visitors from all over.

“OMG it’s crazy. Love it. Absolutely love it. Glad I’m not living next door to it,” said visitor Ann Furby.

Wise stores the creatures in his basement all year. They come out on Halloween, and then go back into hibernation for a year. It’s a family affair.

“Look at it. Everybody loves it. It’s just a great thing to do,” Wise said.

He has been putting all of this together for more than a decade. However, he says this could be it. His son is going off to college next year, and it is too much on his own. Although, he has a lot of people trying to convince him to keep it going.

In Oak Park, the nice weather drew ghosts, goblins and every other character one could imagine to go door-to-door, asking for treats.

Chopper 7 also found busy trick or treaters going door-to-door in west suburban Hinsdale and in northwest suburban Schaumburg.

  • Immigration enforcement on North Side leads to tense confrontations, soft lockdowns at schools

    [ad_1]

CHICAGO (WLS) — Videos showed federal agents detaining people as immigration enforcement activity was reported across Chicago on Friday.

At several North Side locations, federal agents making arrests were met by community members, and at least one encounter ended in a cloud of tear gas.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

Footage from West Town Friday morning showed a federal agent breaking the driver’s side window of a car and detaining a man inside near West Superior Street and North Paulina Street.

ABC7 blurred his face because we do not know if he has been charged with any crimes.

Neighborhood residents confronted agents, shouting at them and blowing their whistles to alert the community as they detained the man, who was waiting for his pregnant wife outside of a community health center. Local elected officials and the community center say the man is in the country legally on a work permit and had a court date with immigration.

Later, a mid-day confrontation pitted Lakeview neighbors and protesters against masked federal agents. The face-to-face encounter ended with volleys of tear gas sending the residential block spiraling into chaos.

Courtney Conway was among dozens of residents who confronted agents near Lakewood and Henderson after a construction worker at a home was arrested.

“My eyes were burning. It did not feel great. They still burn a bit today,” Conway said. “There were some neighbors bringing out water for us to flush out our eyes.”

Doorbell camera video showed agents rolling up and workers, who’d been having lunch, running for cover. One closed and braced against a gate as agents tried to push through. Another was helped through a window to elude agents.

The stepped up ICE activity on the North Side disrupting the school day at Burr Elementary and other schools as multiple arrests played out on nearby streets.

CPS parents and 32nd Ward Alderman Scott Waguespack confirmed a handful of schools in the Bucktown-Wicker Park area were placed on soft lockdown. That meant no outdoor recess, in response to ICE arrests in the neighborhood.

“The kids aren’t playing outside because there’s been a huge amount of ICE presence in the neighborhood, just driving up and down the streets, just kind of terrorizing the neighborhood,” CPS parent Nicole Van Haperbeke said. “Why? It’s a peaceful, beautiful Friday.”

ABC7 obtained multiple videos from Bucktown-Wicker Park residents showing arrests in and around the neighborhood. At least one showed a gardener who a resident says was hired to plant a tree in her backyard.

“I just asked them not to arrest him,” Bucktown resident Donna Kirchman said. “I said, ‘Please leave him alone.’ And they didn’t. I believe they took his phone, and then they took him.”

Heavily armed agents also arrested a man sitting in a vehicle, who witnesses said works at a nearby car dealership.

“It’s terrifying, and we knew that they were going to come to Bucktown,” resident Laura Dufour said. “They’ve been all over the city.”

Those agents were later seen driving around vehicles that had stopped and clipping a woman. Alderman Waguespack says he’s been inundated with messages and witnessed first-hand what he claimed were ICE agents driving dangerously in the neighborhood.

“We saw them backing up into intersections where we’ve got daycare children walking across the street,” Waguespack said. “You’ve got mothers with strollers. You’ve got a fun run right up here at St. Mary’s, and they’re driving without stopping at stop signs, blowing through alleys.”

In light of the school lockdowns Mayor Brandon Johnson is urging Governor JB Pritzker to allow for a remote option for CPS students. That’s something the state has to sign off on, but the governor says he’s opposed to that idea because of the impact it could have on the students’ education.

Also, Laugh Factory posted on social media on Friday, saying the Lakeview comedy club’s night manager was detained by “masked federal agents outside of the club.” The business posted footage of the incident to its Facebook account.

Chicago police said officers responded to a report of a battery in the area of Belmont Avenue and Broadway just before 9:20 a.m.

Responding officers saw federal agents and two other individuals in a physical altercation, and a crowd had gathered in the area, police said.

Police said officers worked to deescalate and conduct crowd control. CPD did not make any arrests and left the scene once the area was cleared.

No further information about the incident from federal authorities was available.

Multiple alderpersons on the North Side issued alerts about more reported ICE activity on Friday.

Ald. Daniel La Spata, who represents the 1st Ward, said on Friday morning, there have been “numerous confirmed sightings of ICE” throughout the West Town community area, including neighborhoods surrounding Ukrainian Village, Wicker Park, and the Humboldt Park border.

Ald. Timmy Knusden, who represents the 43rd Ward, said community members on Friday have “reported ICE sightings and suspected enforcement activity at the following locations:

    • Cleveland/Belden

    • 2600 N Racine

    • 440 W Belden

    • Reports of 2 unmarked SUVs driving north on Halsted with masked drivers

    • Lincoln/Racine/Diversey

    • Racine/Drummond

    • Lill/Seminary

    • Wrightwood/Racine”

Wicker Park’s A.N. Pritzker School also said it was on soft lockdown Friday, and all after-school programs, with the exception of Wicker Park Kids and Apollo, were canceled.

Tear gas was thrown at Henderson and Lakewood, in a community that had so far has avoided contact with ICE agents.

“The tear gas was deployed by ice without warning and without my neighbors hear from doing anything to provoke that reaction no one was interfering with them they were just exercising the first amendment rights,” 44th Ward Ald. Bennett Lawson said. “This is very disturbing.”

Roaming bands of agents appeared to be targeting communities Friday where immigrants might be working.

“No one gains, people already hurt and you kinda get to see that in real time,” neighborhood resident Donny Donoghue said.

Earlier, protesters gathered outside the ICE processing facility in Broadview once again, as they have done every Friday now for several weeks.

Friday’s demonstration has remained fairly contained to one corner as protesters keep within the safety zone, speaking out against the Trump’s administration’s operation “Midway Blitz” and the recent immigration crackdown in the Chicagoland area.

“I believe that we are creating huge wounds, not only for the people who are being detained, but for the ICE officers who are doing these horrible things. I feel terrible for everybody,” said Mary Kelly, who lives in Oak Park.

Messages left by ABC7 Chicago for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security regarding the North Side operations were not returned.

Immigration operations are also having an impact on the Asian community.

The Chinese American Service League shared a video of federal agents detaining a man outside his home in Bridgeport on Thursday.

CASL claims the father of two was not doing anything illegal. Witnesses say the agents did not present a warrant.

DHS says gang member tried to ram agents with car, defends apparent tear gas use on protesters

DHS said a Latin Kings gang member tried to ram agents with a car in Cicero, IL and defended the apparent use of tear gas during a Chicago protest.

Meanwhile, ABC7 is getting more information from the DHS about recent violent run-ins with federal agents over the past few days.

DHS says Wednesday was one of their most violent days on the job. At 26th and Ogden in Cicero, DHS claims a Latin Kings gang member tried to ram agents with his vehicle.

Six people were arrested that day for impeding operations, and three undocumented immigrants were placed into custody.

And there were more tense moments Thursday at the Little Village Discount Mall during an anti-ICE rally.

Attorneys accused federal agents of violating a court order, which does not allow them to use riot control weapons unless facing an imminent threat and requires them to issue warnings first before deploying tear gas.

A federal complaint is now taking aim at the man who led the charge. An image of Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino appears to show him throw tear gas “without justification,” according to the complaint.

“Federal agents started acting aggressive, pushing protesters away… Again, it was all peaceful protesters,” said protester Kristian Armendariz.

However, DHS says the group of about 75-100 people began firing commercial artillery shell fireworks at agents and throwing rocks, adding that Bovino was hit in the head.

According to DHS, agents repeated multiple warnings to the crowd to back up, informing them that chemical agents would be deployed. The department stood by their agents’ actions, saying, “Agents properly used their training. The use of chemical munitions was conducted in full accordance with CBP policy and was necessary to ensure the safety of both law enforcement and the public.”

Bovino was set to appear in court on Nov. 5 to give a two-hour testimony, but now a federal judge has ordered more than double the time, five hours, to question Bovino after the incidents.

Later Friday, Judge Sara Ellis also ordered Bovino to testify in-person on Tuesday during a status hearing.

  • Thousands expected to gather for ‘No Kings’ protest in downtown Chicago Saturday

    [ad_1]

CHICAGO (WLS) — “No Kings” organizers are expecting tens of thousands of people from the suburbs and city neighborhoods to participate in a peaceful protest Saturday beginning at Butler Field in Chicago’s Grant Park.

Chicago is one of dozens of cities nationwide holding “No Kings” protests Saturday.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

It comes as protesters have gathered near the Broadview Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility for weeks, calling for a change in immigration enforcement.

Because of recent ICE arrests in the Chicago area, organizers are expecting a much bigger crowd than the previous “No Kings” rally held in June.

After a two-hour program beginning at noon in Grant Park on Saturday, protesters will then march through downtown. The Chicago Police Department says it will have extra resources throughout the Loop.

Red paint, white poster board and a final stroke, “Democracy dies in silence” is the phrase protester Alex Saucedo is using for his hand made sign for Chicago’s “No Kings” protest.

“We want to make sure that we’re drawing attention to the cause of making sure that ICE fully aware that we don’t need them here,” Saucedo said. “They’re not welcome in Chicago.”

Planning to attend Saturday’s protest, Saucedo and his wife came to this Brighton Park Art Studio to make signs today. ..With the help of his friend musician Samantha Rose, Mural Artist Holiday Gerry opened his studio up today to the public…They provided free supplies to make No Kings signs….

“A lot of people are talking about it, and people are really going to be showing up,” said Holiday Gerry with Holiday Studios. “And I wanted to extend this community space for people to get to know each other.”

RELATED | What to know about ‘No Kings’ protests around US

“Authoritarianism wins when we decide we’re too scared to show up and defend our Constitution and our fundamental rights,” Personal PAC CEO and protest organizer Sarah Garza Resnick said. “It is going to be peaceful tomorrow. We are peaceful people who just believe in standing up for what is right.”

Garza Resnick’s organization Personal PAC is one of several organizations behind Chicago’s “No Kings” event. President Donald Trump and his administration have painted protest participants as left wing violent radical groups who are getting paid.

“This is their tactic,” Garza Resnick said. “Nobody is getting paid out there. I’m a mom.”

Promising a peaceful event, Resnick expects people from all walks of life to participate.

Armed with a speaker and bullhorn, Samantha Rose says the protest will be a family affair. She is bringing her dad and her friends are bringing their kids. Rose does not view it as a partisan event.

“The political party is Americans for America, speaking up and using our right freedom of speech,” Rose said. “That’s what being American is.”

  • Agents tackle US citizen after East Side operation leads to crash, spills into Walgreens: VIDEO

    [ad_1]

CHICAGO (WLS) — A federal operation on Chicago’s East Side led to a crash, followed by a pursuit, before the situation eventually spilled over into a nearby Walgreens.

That is where 19-year-old South Side native Warren King says he was shopping with friends and family before he was tackled and arrested.

The takedown by immigration officers was recorded outside a Walgreens store as loved ones pled for his release.

King’s relative can be heard saying in the video, “He’s a citizen! He’s a citizen!”

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

ABC7 blurred his face during the arrest since he faces no charges.

“You don’t know what’s going on, so get the *** back!” an agent can be heard saying in the video.

It happened after federal agents were seen swarming the store, appearing to be in search of someone.

“And, when he called for backup, other people come in, and that’s when I start to leave,” King said.

SEE ALSO: Chicago federal intervention: Tracking surge in immigration enforcement operations | Live updates

But King says he did not get far from the exit before being tackled to the ground by a federal agent and placed under arrest. He is now left with both physical and mental scars.

“He was just saying, ‘Why are you running?’” King said. “But I’m telling him, ‘I’m a U.S. citizen. I’m here. I’m legal. I’m born here.’ So, they didn’t try to hear none of that, though.”

It all apparently stemmed from a collision, captured on video, at the nearby intersection of 105th and Avenue N.

Video shows Border Patrol agents in a white truck crashing into a red SUV on Tuesday morning.

It happened following a chase that circled the neighborhood for nearly 30 minutes after, the Department of Homeland Security said, the driver, an alleged undocumented immigrant, rammed into their agents’ vehicle.

Border Patrol followed the vehicle for about 30 minutes, and stopped it using a precision immobilization technique, or PIT, maneuver.

Two people, both living in the U.S. without legal permission, tried to run away, DHS said. They were taken into custody.

“Once the vehicle was stopped, the suspects, who are both illegal aliens attempted to flee on foot. As Border Patrol arrested the subjects and attempted to secure the scene a crowd began to form,” DHS said.

King told ABC7 he sat with them both in a car for hours before he was released.

“They just accepted, like, their defeat. It wasn’t no talking in the back between both of them, and they knew each other,” King said. “I just graduated high school. So, they can come for, literally, anybody. And that’s not right.”

A white Expedition and the red SUV were damaged in the crash.

Chopper 7 was over the crash scene at about 12:10 p.m., where a number of unmarked federal vehicles were in the middle of an intersection.

“I went outside, and I just see all the ICE guys on the floor with the guy. Then everybody just started coming out,” local shopkeeper Hector Baldazua said. “First I heard a lot of cars doing circles. I was like, what’s happening?”

Uber driver Eliseo Uribe was driving home.

“The white SUV nearly hit me. I thought they were fighting. But I never imagined they were ICE,” Uribe said in Spanish.

Mostly peaceful bystanders surrounded the dozens of agents in a tense standoff. Some were holding flags and others were holding phones, recording.

    They chanted “ICE go home.”

Video shows one teenager being detained. Their attorney says they are a U.S. citizen, and have since been released.

ABC7 Chicago crews on the ground saw some tear gas deployed, after something, possibly eggs, was thrown at agents.

Chicago police said they had responded to the crash just after 11:05 a.m.

CPD had tried to get between federal agents and the residents gathered to deescalate, police said, but then rocks were thrown at the federal agents.

A large amount of tear gas was deployed about 12:40 p.m.

Federal agents used tear gas against a crowd on Chicago’s East Side Tuesday.

    Those gathered quickly dispersed.

Federal agents had masks, but CPD did not. Some officers appeared to be affected by the gas.

During the protest, Chicago police said, 13 of their officers were exposed to tear gas while federal agents arrested multiple people, including a 16-year-old boy.

“They just told me, ‘Juanita, you have an emergency. ICE took your son. They beat him up. They body-slammed him. And they took your son,’” Juanita Garnica said. “They haven’t told me anything. He’s not an immigrant. He was born and raised in Chicago.”

Deputy Mayor Beatriz Ponce de Leon arrived in the aftermath.

“There is absolutely no reason to have this kind of chaos happening in our communities, putting people at risk, putting people in harm’s way and exacerbating the fear that people feel right now,” said Ponce de Leon, deputy mayor of Immigrant, Migrant and Refugee Rights.

Homeland Security described what happened as part of a growing trend. They did not say how many people were arrested in total or where they were taken.

“My main concern was getting the vehicles removed from the situation. I thought that would kind of clear up the tensions. I have to worry about how this will spill over in the next few days, next few weeks,” 10th Ward Ald. Peter Chico said.

  • Our Lady of Mount Carmel Academy students to attend audience with Chicago native Pope Leo at Vatican

    [ad_1]

CHICAGO (WLS) — On a beautiful Tuesday evening in St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City, excitement is building for a group of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Academy students, who are getting ready for Wednesday’s papal audience.

An ABC7 crew was on the flight with some of those students and Cardinal Blase Cupich. From the gate at O’Hare Airport to their tour of Vatican City and Rome, their energy is only growing.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

Swapping Lakeview for Vatican views, the students part of a class project gone viral are now walking the same places and spaces of the Catholic cardinals they once dressed up as.

“I get emotional when I think about it,” said Allison Foerster, who teaches at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Academy. “This feels like such a gift to get to be a part of this, to get to be a part of the team that puts together something like this for our students.”

And on Wednesday, they will get to stand in St. Peter’s Square as their hometown pontiff, Pope Leo XIV, addresses the general audience.

“We have no expectation of what will happen. We are just coming in faith and in joy to be in his presence and see what happens,” Foerster said.

On Monday, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Academy students in Rome took part in a special tour of the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, getting a chance to see the tomb of Paul the Apostle.

“I don’t want to leave. I want to learn more, but I can’t, because we have to go see other stuff,” said fifth-grader Max Schnakenberg.

Schnakenberg, 10, says the time between first putting on his conclave costume to being able to walk into walls of Vatican City was fast.

“They were like ‘Hey guys, we’re going to make our own conclave.’ And now, ‘Hey, were going to meet the pope.’ Like, that’s a big jump,” Schnakenberg said. “Coming here, to Rome, is insane itself. Meeting the pope is a whole other level.”

Chicago native Pope Leo showed off his catching skills at a special greeting for Croatian pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square on Monday.

It is still anyone’s guess if these students will get more than just a general audience with the Holy Father.

But for Foerster, one the teachers who envisioned the idea of the mock conclave, says this trip itself is a blessing she and her fellow teachers never imagined.

“They’re really looking forward to just being a part of the experience. We know that no matter what, we get to see him and that in itself feels like such a gift,” Foerster said. “To be able to be here doing this, knowing this is a watershed moment for our church for our school… It’s such a gift to get be a part of this community, and to get to teach these sweet young people and to know that this is going to be a life-changing moment for them.”

Meanwhile, ABC News has learned the pope will make his first foreign trip.

The Vatican told reporters that Pope Leo XIV will travel to Turkey and Lebanon. His trip is set for late November into December.

Neighbors said they are still trying to make sense of what unfolded Monday night.

Many described being woken up by federal agents and neighbors said it’s unclear who agents were looking for.

“They were throwing flash bombs to the front of the windows, if they couldn’t get into units or apartments that how they got the attention to open the door,” resident Alicia Brooks said. “They came with these things to break down the doors.”

Residents at the apartment building on 75th Street and South Shore Drive said they are trying to understand what unfolded after dozens of federal agents arrived overnight.

Video shows armed Border Patrol and FBI agents dressed in military gear in the South Shore neighborhood. Citizen app video showed trucks with federal agents down the street.

They were snatching people, no answers to any questions people asked,..at all,” Brooks said.

Video shows some of the windows of the building left shattered.

One man said he saw two people detained.

Felipe Dominguez came to the apartment building early Tuesday morning to help a Venezuelan woman run errands.

He’s worried that she was might have been swept up during the operation after he says he attempted calling her multiple times, but hasn’t been able to reach her.

“I tried to call her 5/6 o’clock because I’m supposed to take her to the bank today,” Dominguez said.

Governor Pritzker denounced the intensified federal law enforcement presence, in a press conference Monday.

The governor said the Department of Homeland Security is requesting 100 military personnel be sent to Illinois.

  • 6 customers still awaiting refunds after South Holland travel agent cancels their expensive trips

    [ad_1]

SOUTH HOLLAND, Ill. (WLS) — They paid several thousands of dollars, only to see their vacations disappear and their money vanish, too.

Six people say they were cheated out of their dream vacations after trusting a South Holland travel agent who stopped responding. So, the ABC7 I-Team went searching for answers and for that travel agent.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

Many said they met the travel agent, Vikki McNuckle of ACL Travel Group LLC, through church or through other south suburban residents. Some had even been on trips with her before. They say the cost of their trips covered airfare and hotels.

“So no, I’m not postponing it any longer. I say if the trip’s not a go, then send me my refund,” said Christopher Suber.

Suber and his wife, Harriet, say they lost $35,000 after paying for two trips in 2024 to Dubai and Greece. They say those trips were rescheduled multiple times and then abruptly canceled by McNuckle. She acknowledged the money owed in a letter.

“And that’s a financial burden on us, you know, hurting us from doing other things that we may want to have tried to do, you know, when we still sitting here waiting to get $35,000 back out of our retirement fund that we took out,” Suber said.

Others in this group have similar stories.

“Postponed twice. And the second time, twice now, is totally canceled,” said Arnold Watkins.

Watkins says he paid $14,000 for a canceled Dubai trip and has been waiting for a refund since January. But he says he recently won a credit card dispute for $4,000.

SEE ALSO | Vacationers lose thousands, say Chicago travel agent left them stranded: ‘Where’s my money?’

“Makes me feel disheartened and very disheartened because the simple fact of it is this was supposed to be my honeymoon trip,” Watkins said.

Eunice Lockett and her sister, Dorothy Eichelbergar, booked separately for a trip to Greece in October 2024 that never happened.

“Just tell me, you spent the money, OK? I rather for you to be honest with me, then just, you know, ignore me. It makes me angry, very angry,” Eichelbergar said.

Lockett says she did get the airfare refunded, but she filed a small claims court lawsuit, asking for the rest of her money.

Inez Thomas says she paid $10,000 for that same Greece trip but recently received a $3,000 refund, only for the airfare.

“Don’t steal from me. And that’s what I feel like. She has stolen our money,” Thomas said.

Consumers say McNuckle blamed the 2024 wildfires for the Greece cancellations but did not follow through on rescheduling, and refunds have not been issued. ABC7 also found another frustrated customer.

READ MORE | FBI investigating Chicago travel agent accused of defrauding customers, stranding vacationers

“And this is going on a year. No vacation,” said Tracy Thomas.

Thomas says she and her roommate are owed $10,000 for the same Greece trip for her 16th birthday.

“I’m living paycheck to paycheck, so I should be able to use that to pay off whatever I need to pay off one if I choose to select another trip, that would be fine,” Thomas said.

Thomas says she was told a refund was on the way.

“She said that the refund would take 90 business days. That was the first time. Then when we started inquiring, she said, ‘It takes 120 days.’ Next thing I know, we haven’t heard anything and we’re calling,” Thomas said.

The I-Team found seven Illinois attorney general reports filed against the company. Many are from the consumers in our story, and some of these customers filed police reports. The South Holland Police Department told ABC7’s Jason Knowles that it is “actively investigating this case.”

Knowles sent several emails to McNuckle, called her and stopped by her home. We never heard back from that travel agent who these consumers say cashed in and broke promises.

“She cannot be trusted. Do not book any trips with her,” Watkins said.

You should always use a credit card when booking with a travel agent.

However, some of the consumers say they could not dispute charges on their credit cards because by the time the trips were officially canceled, it was beyond the window to dispute.

You can also research travel insurance. However, some consumers who had it say it did not cover losses since the vendor made the cancellation.

  • ICE confirms 4 Chicago-area arrests as Trump administration’s ‘Midway Blitz’ operation gets underway

    [ad_1]

CHICAGO (WLS) — Immigrant advocates say they have already received a large volume of calls to their hotline about Immigration and Customs Enforcement encounters in the Chicago area in recent days.

Some elected leaders worry that this just the start of the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown in the area.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

“It’s obvious that operations have begun in Chicago, and it’s even more obvious they’re going to be targeting our communities here in the Southwest Side again. We’re afraid. Our neighbors are afraid,” said Any Huamani, who is on the Brighton Park Neighborhood Council and is a Southwest Side Rapid Response team member.

The Department of Homeland Security says their operation “Midway Blitz” in the Chicago area is underway. They say they are targeting violent offenders who are here illegally.

On social media, ICE posted a picture of one of their SUVs with the Chicago skyline behind it, saying they are here to remove the dangerous public safety threats.

Late Monday, ICE said agents arrested at least four men from Mexico in the Chicago area on Sunday. They are accused of crimes like DUI, vehicular burglary, armed robbery, domestic battery, assault and sexual assault of a child, ICE said.

“So far, it’s been successful. We have successfully arrested some criminal aliens over the last few days. We just began our surge. We’re going to be bringing in our our partners, our other DHS partners, DOJ partners, CBP partners coming in. So, they’ll be coming in and participating in this ICE-led operation,” said ICE official Marcos Charles.

ICE said one arrest was made at 47th and Archer and another was made at 49th and Archer. ICE did not provide locations for the other two arrests.

Video provided to ABC7 shows federal agents wearing badges that say “ICE” handcuffing a man near Archer and Pulaski. Neighbors say that man is a flower vendor.

“We have confirmed in my ward… detained in my ward… there have been three people. One in 50th and Pulaski; he a was a street vendor selling flowers. The other, a couple of blocks down in Archer, was just standing on the sidewalk. The third one was waiting on the bus on 47th and Archer,” said Ald. Jeylu Gutierrez, who represents the 14th Ward. “This was never about arresting the worst of the worst. It’s been about terrorizing our community.”

Gutierrez says the wife of the flower vendor has been notified, and the family is figuring out their next steps.

On Monday morning, the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights says their teams were deployed to 61st and Kildare on Chicago’s Southwest Side after reports of immigration agents in the area.

LIVE UPDATES | Chicago federal intervention: Tracking surge in immigration enforcement operations

“What we do know is they attempted arrests, and there has been at least one arrest for today,” said ICIRR Senior Director of Deportation Defense Rey Wences.

While announcing the immigration blitz on Monday, DHS also listed 11 specific people agents are looking for in Chicago.

Many of those people were detained in the Cook County Jail for criminal cases, but later released.

DHS accuses the jail of not cooperating. But in a statement on Monday night, the Cook County Sheriff’s Office says state law prohibits them from releasing any detainees into the custody of federal immigration authorities without a signed arrest warrant from a judge.

Meanwhile, Evanston is also preparing for possible ICE raids in the coming days. The mayor there was tipped off by the governor’s office and sent out an email blast, letting residents know.

“We’re also working with community partners. So for example, this morning, the high school sent an email blast as well to all of their families, knowing that some people might get ours and not theirs, some people might get theirs and not ours,” said Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss.

The Evanston City Council will vote on a resolution calling for the state to address ICE agents wearing masks on Monday night.

“We believe that it is just fundamentally wrong in a democracy for an agent of the state to use the power of the state without identifying themselves clearly with transparency and accountability,” Biss said.

Many people in the Chicago area are wondering if this past weekend was the calm before the ICE storm.

“Operation ‘Midway Blitz’ is not public safety. It’s a declaration of war on Mexicans and Latinos in Chicago,” said state Rep. Aaron Ortiz, who represents the 1st District.

Immigrant advocates reminded the public to not provoke federal agents and to take video of any encounters from a safe distance.

Religious leaders rally against immigration crackdown in Chicago: ‘Faith over fear’

Religious leaders from a diverse group of faith backgrounds stood with one voice on Daley Plaza to decry the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown.

Meanwhile, more than one dozen faith leaders came together on Monday, taking a stand against ICE raids and rallying in support of immigrants in a campaign they are calling Faith Over Fear.

“ICE cannot survive the fire of a forge,” said Reverend David Black with the First Presbyterian Church of Chicago.

“But what he’s done is rallying us together. I’ve not seen this in a long time. He’s fighting with all his weapons of his mouth and weapons of the army. We’re fighting for something. It’s our DNA, our faith, our faith is essential of who we are. He’s not ready for this and he’s not more powerful,” said Fr. Michael Pfleger with St. Sabina Church.

Religious leaders from a diverse group of faith backgrounds stood with one voice on Daley Plaza to decry the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown and the possibility of a National Guard deployment in Chicago, as the White House border czar says the use of National Guard troops to protect and support immigration enforcement operations is “on the table.”

“This morning, as I dropped my kids off at school. Like so many of us in Chicago did this morning, we took our kids to school, but today felt different,” said Rev Sandra Van-Opstal with Lawndale Christian Community Church.

“I’ve got to tell you, there’s a lot of fear. I live in the Pilsen/Little Village area, and it’s been quieter these past few days, and so, we suspect that people will be navigating the conditions in our city cautiously,” said Ray Wences with the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights.

Little Village is all decked out in Mexican colors in advance of this weekend’s Independence Day celebration. Many street vendors are selling flags and other items for those gearing up for the festivities.

“God stood on the side of the vulnerable and the oppressed,” said Mishkan Chicago founder Rabbi Lizzi Heydemann. “God split the sea for them and said to the world, the way that you treat the least among you, the strangers, the slaves, the servants, the way that you treat them is a test of your society.”

The faith leaders are preparing to support those families who may be impacted by ICE detentions.

“As a way to be able to walk with the families after something has happened, we’re going to reactivate a lot of the resource network that we had during the new arrivals mission and be able to partner with churches and other groups to be able to get emergency items out to all of them,” said New Life Centers CEO Matt DeMateo.

SEE ALSO | ‘We’re not going to war’ with Chicago, Trump says, after sharing ominous meme

A protest and a march against the operation are set to get underway in the Loop late Tuesday afternoon.

Trump, meanwhile, continues to focus on Chicago crime as operation “Midway Blitz” ramps up.

“And I don’t know why Chicago isn’t calling us saying, ‘Please give us help,’ when you have, over just a short period of time, 50 murders and hundreds of people shot, and then, you have a governor that stands up and says how crime is just fine. It’s really crazy,” Trump said.

In an op-ed piece in the New York Times, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson addressed a possible National Guard deployment to address crime, saying in part, “lowering crime rates here does not require an occupation of our city by armed members of the National Guard, as the White House continues to threaten us with…. Sending in the National Guard is the wrong solution to a real problem.”

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker responded to the ICE post about coming after dangerous criminals, saying it is not about fighting crime, and that if it were, his administration would have heard from the Department of Homeland Security to coordinate efforts. The governor says this is about scaring Illinoisans.

The ICIRR Family Support Network was founded to connect immigrant communities with support. They can be reached at 855-435-7693.

A spokesperson for Pritzker, issued a statement, saying, “The Governor’s Office has received no formal communication or information from the Trump Administration. Like the public and press, we are learning of their operations through their social media as they attempt to produce a reality television show. As Trump has said himself, this is not about seriously fighting crime or reforming immigration – it’s about Trump’s plan to go to war with America’s third-largest city. If he cared about delivering real solutions for Illinois, then we would have heard from him. Unlike Trump’s reality show, we don’t like keeping people in the dark. Since we have learned of the Trump Administration’s plans to deploy federal agents and active-duty military to Illinois, Gov. Pritzker has shared information with the public and the Governor’s Office has remained in regular contact with leaders and partners at the City of Chicago, Cook County, the Illinois congressional delegation, state legislature, and mayors and representatives from the collar counties.”

Johnson also issued a statement, saying, “We have received no notice of any enhanced immigration action by the Trump administration. We are concerned about potential militarized immigration enforcement without due process because of ICE’s track record of detaining and deporting American citizens and violating the human rights of hundreds of detainees. ICE sent a 4-year-old boy with stage 4 kidney cancer to Honduras, even though the child was an American citizen. There are more than 500 documented incidents of human rights abuses at detention facilities since Trump took office, including deaths of detainees and alleged cases of sexual abuse of minors by federal immigration agents. Because of these incidents and more, we remain opposed to militarized immigration enforcement that runs afoul of the Constitution in our city. We encourage residents to visit www.Chicago.gov/KYR to stay informed on their rights.”

  • Boating community honors Captain Bill with vigil after death at DuSable Harbor: ‘Died protecting us’

    [ad_1]

CHICAGO (WLS) — Loved ones gather Saturday to remember a beloved boater whose body was pulled from DuSable Harbor last weekend.

Chicago police are investigating his death as a homicide.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

A picture of Plainfield man Nabil Abzal, affectionately known as Captain Bill, smiling is what greeted his former boating community who gathered, mourning his death. His friends say he was attacked.

“Unauthorized people, he was trying to escort them off and he never made it back to his boat,” said Alan Brandt Malelo, vigil organizer and friend. “He would cock his hat and smile with his pursed lips.”

The cheerful face memorialized in a picture is how his fellow boaters want to remember the man who loved the very harbor where police said he was murdered.

“It’s a very close-knit community, so we all kind of reached out to one another,” said Frank Jaeger a fellow captain and friend. “It’s unfortunate to hear the news that it was him.”

Flowers, a balloon, and a picture of Abzal adorned an entrance at DuSable Harbor, where just a few feet away on the C dock, mourners gathered for a private vigil to remember the late 63-year-old man before throwing petals into the part of the marina where his body was pulled from last weekend.

“It’s tough to swallow. There are people like Captain Bill out there who are dying because they slept on their boat for the night, and that should not be happening,” Brandt Malelo said. “They got in his boat. They were having a party at 2:45 in the morning, vaping, drinking, whatever; doing what party-goers do, and he woke up.”

While the circumstances surrounding the Plainfield man’s death remain murky, police are ruling it a homicide. Brandt Malelo says his years-long friend and boat neighbor may have been attacked by a group.

“And, he took it upon himself to go to the end of the dock here, and there was a violent act at the end of the dock here and he was thrown in the water, and he never made it back,” Brandt Malelo said. “It’s a tragedy. It’s a modern-day tragedy, and he died protecting us.”

Police have not confirmed what might have led up to the alleged murder, but the owner of a nearby restaurant told ABC7 that they have given police surveillance footage as part of the homicide investigation.

So far, Chicago police say no one has been arrested.

  • Pilsen mourns community ‘icon’ caught in crossfire after years of homelessness, relatives say

CHICAGO (WLS) — A memorial is growing on Tuesday at the spot where a man was killed while standing in the crossfire of a Southwest Side gun battle over the weekend, relatives told ABC7.

When the sound of gunfire erupted near Juanita Romero’s home, she did not know that the violence took the life of her decades-old friend, who family members identified as Pedro Toledo.

“He was the icon of this community. Everybody loved him,” Romero said. “There was a lot of gunshots. I jumped out of my bed. It scared me so much.”

Balloons, candles, and a picture of the man beloved in the Pilsen community now mark the area where his life ended and his loved ones’ heartache began.

“He will never be forgotten. He will always be remembered here,” Romero said.

Relatives say the 57-year-old, who was affectionately known as Pepe, was one of three people shot on Sunday morning near 17th and Wolcott when multiple gunmen opened fire.

Police say Toledo was shot multiple times. He was the only victim of that shooting who died from his injuries.

Toledo’s family and friends told ABC7 he was an innocent bystander, caught in the crossfire of gun violence after years of experiencing homelessness.

“He survived all these years through winters, through COVID, and nothing ever happened to him. And for him to die this way, it’s just not fair,” Romero said.

“Friends and family say they plan to gather at the memorial until Toledo is laid to rest. Relatives said his funeral arrangements are pending. So far, no one has been arrested in connection with the shooting.
