The incident happened around 12:45 p.m. in the southbound lanes of the highway near Magdalena Avenue, the CHP said. No injuries were reported.
All southbound lanes were initially blocked. Around 3:20 p.m., the CHP announced the No. 4 lane was open.
The spill also impacted traffic in the northbound direction. Two lanes were open as of 3:40 p.m., according to the Santa Clara County Fire Department, which was handling the cleanup.
Around 7:20 p.m., the CHP announced the No. 3 and 4 lanes in the southbound direction were open. The other lanes were expected to reopen in another one to two hours.
Sodium hypochlorite, or bleach, and hydrochloric acid, or muriatic acid, spilled in the crash, the fire department said. When combined, the chemicals produce chlorine gas.
