Chase is targeting select Freedom Flex cardholders with a spending bonus that can earn you extra cash back. The bonus is a bit complicated, and it requires a maximum spend of $6,500 to earn the full amount. It works out to an extra 0.57X on all that spend. Check out the details below.

    • After you reach $1,000 in purchases you will earn an additional 0.50% for each $1 of your next $2,500 in purchases;
    • After you reach $4,000 in purchases, you will earn an additional 1% for each $1 of your next $2,500 in purchases.

    Guru’s Wrap-up

It’s always nice to earn extra cash back, but this is not a huge bonus. You will earn an extra $37 if you spend $6,500 now through the end of November.

  • Some Chase Freedom Cards Being Converted To Chase Freedom Flex/Freedom Unlimited – Doctor Of Credit

Some Chase Freedom Cards Being Converted To Chase Freedom Flex/Freedom Unlimited – Doctor Of Credit

Update 9/27/24: Another round of product changes are going out now, to take place on October 7, 2024. (ht r/churning)

    Original Post 11/30/21:

Some existing vanilla Chase Freedom cardholders have received an e-mail with the subject line ‘, your Freedom® card is being upgraded to Freedom Unlimited®’ stating that their card will be converted to the Chase Freedom Unlimited. Others are being told their card will be converted to the Chase Freedom Flex.

It seems that so far inactive cardholders (e.g cardholders that haven’t used their existing cards in the last few months) are being converted but there are rumblings that all cardholders will be converted. The Chase Freedom Flex earns 5% on rotating categories (same as the Vanilla freedom) but the Freedom Unlimited earns 1.5% cash back on all purchases.

I assume cardholders with a Freedom Flex already are being converted to the Freedom Unlimited, and those without the Freedom Flex are being converted to that but that doesn’t always seem to be the case based on the datapoints I’ve seen.

  • Chase Freedom Q4 2024 Categories: Paypal, McDonald’s, Pet Stores & Services, Select Charities – Doctor Of Credit

Chase Freedom Q4 2024 Categories: Paypal, McDonald’s, Pet Stores & Services, Select Charities – Doctor Of Credit

Chase has released the 5%/5x categories on their Freedom and Freedom Flex cards for the fourth quarter of 2024, up to $1,500 in purchases:

    1. PayPal
    2. McDonald’s
    3. Pet Shops and Vet Services
    4. Select Charities

Paypal is an easy win. Some people might find the other categories useful as well. Remember that you can use Paypal to pay taxes; give charity; pay at millions of businesses like Walmart.com, Bestbuy.com etc; and even possibly pay in-store at some locations. It should also be possible to send money to a friend using the Family & Friends option for a 2.9% fee.

It’s been mentioned the possibility of using Paypal at CVS stores to get 7x on the Freedom Flex card since that card also earns 2x extra points at Drugstores.

    Chase Freedom 5% Categories for Q3 2024

    Chase Freedom 5% Categories for Q3 2024

Chase Freedom and Freedom Flex are great products to have in your wallet. They have no annual fee and earn Ultimate Rewards points when you have another Chase premium card. They also have 5% quarterly categories, which can be a good way to rack up rewards.

Now the Chase Freedom bonus categories have been revealed for Q3 2024. These are good categories, which Freedom and Freedom Flex cardholders can definitely use to earn extra points.

    Chase Freedom Cards

The Chase Freedom and Freedom Flex cards earn 1% on all purchases but also 5% on rotating quarterly bonus categories, up to a combined $1,500 in purchases. So you can earn up to $75 every quarter, if you maximize the eligible categories. You can even have more than one Freedom card. But it gets much better than that, since the cashback can be used as Ultimate Rewards points.

To do that, you need to have one of the premium or business cards from Chase. That’s Chase Sapphire PreferredChase Sapphire ReserveInk Business Preferred or Ink Business Plus. Then the points earned with your Chase Freedom cards can be converted into Ultimate Rewards points and transferred to travel partners.

    Chase Freedom 5% Categories

The categories for the first quarter of 2024 have now been revealed. The new 5% categories include:

    • Gas Stations
    • EV Charging
    • Select Live Entertainment
    • Movie Theaters

You can earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases in these categories from July 1 to September 30, 2024. You can activate the new categories here, starting on June 15, 2023. Must activate by September 14, 2024.

    Guru’s Wrap-Up

Gas Stations is the probably the best category for this upcoming quarter. Many people have considerable monthly spend on gas, and many locations also sell gift cards. That should help you maximize the spending.

Don’t forget to maximize this quarter’s categories as well. You have until the end of the day to activate these categories and until end of March to spend $1,500 at:

    • Amazon.com
    • Hotels booked directly with the hotel (plus through Chase Travel)
    • Restaurants

If you don’t have the card, you can sign up and earn a $200 bonus cash back when you spend $500 within the first three months. Plus you get 5% cash back on gas station purchases on up to $12,000 spent in the first year. You can also product change other Chase cards, if you want it but don’t really want to apply for a new card, especially with the bonus being on the lower end.

  • (Updates) Chase Freedom Categories For Q2 2024: Restaurants, Hotels, Amazon, Whole Foods – Doctor Of Credit

(Updates) Chase Freedom Categories For Q2 2024: Restaurants, Hotels, Amazon, Whole Foods – Doctor Of Credit

Update 3/15/24: Two things have been officially confirmed to us through Chase media channels:

    1. Amazon and Whole Foods are both included in the 5% category. “The Amazon.com category includes purchases made at Amazon.com (including digital downloads, Amazon.com Gift Cards, Amazon Fresh orders, Amazon Prime subscriptions, and items sold by third-party merchants through Amazon.com’s marketplace) and Whole Foods Market (including physical Whole Foods Market and Whole Foods Market 365 stores, and the website accessible at
www.wholefoodsmarket.com). The Amazon.com category does not include (i) purchases from merchants using Amazon Pay, (ii) purchases made at international Amazon retail sites…(iii) purchases made at international Whole Foods Market sites, (iv) purchases of Whole Foods Market or Whole Foods Market 365 products or services through third-party sites such as Eventbrite, Instacart, Google Express and Shipt, (v) online purchases of Whole Foods Market or Whole Foods Market 365 gift cards (including through buyatab.com), event tickets or classes, (vi) purchases from certain third-party vendors operating at Whole Foods Market sites, (vii) purchases of massage services at any Whole Foods Market site, or (viii) purchases from Spa@Ink, in each case in Amazon’s sole discretion.
    2. Chase also wanted to highlight to their customers that, “This quarter is particularly exciting for Freedom Flex cardmembers, who can stack quarterly cash back offers on top of always-on cash back to earn 9% total cash back on hotel stays booked through Chase Travel and 7% total cash back on restaurants”

    Original Post 3/14/24 (now updated)

Chase released the 5% categories on the Freedom and Freedom Flex cards for the second quarter of 2024:

    • Restaurants – Restaurants is always a useful category. Those who have the Freedom flex card always earn 3x on Restaurants; this quarter you’ll earn 7x (1x base point + 2x Flex bonus + 4x quarterly category bonus).
    • Hotels – Nice for spring/summer travel. Hotels stays booked through Chase Travel always earn 5x on the Freedom Flex card and so it will now earn 9x for hotel stays booked via Chase Travel (1x base point + 4x Chase Travel bonus + 4x quarterly category bonus).
    • Amazon – Some people will value 5x Ultimate Rewards even more than 5% back which Prime members get on their Amazon Prime Visa card. You can also reload up your Amazon balance (that’s an affiliate link) with $1,500 and spend it down after the quarter is over.
    • Whole Foods – Grocery store deals are always nice. You can usually buy third party gift cards at Whole Foods stores as well.

These are not yet showing publicly, but they already appear in the Chase login. They’ll show at the public link in a few hours, presumably.

Today, 3/14/24, is also the final day to activate the Q1 2024 categories.

  • Chase Freedom’s Q2 Rotating Bonus Categories Revealed

Chase Freedom’s Q2 Rotating Bonus Categories Revealed

    Chase Freedom Q2 Categories

Chase Freedom Q2 Rotating Bonus Categories

Today, Chase revealed the rotating bonus categories for Freedom (no longer available) and Freedom Flex cardmembers for the second quarter of 2024. The new categories include Amazon and Whole Foods, Hotels, and Restaurants.

Cardmembers can earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases in these categories for three months. Let’s take a look at the full details of the bonus categories for this upcoming quarter.

    Earn 5% with Chase Freedom

Starting April 1 through June 30, 2024, Chase Freedom and Freedom Flex cardmembers can earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases on the following:

    ➡️ Amazon and Whole Foods

The Amazon.com category includes purchases made at Amazon.com (including digital downloads, Amazon.com Gift Cards, Amazon Fresh orders, Amazon Prime subscriptions, and items sold by third-party merchants through Amazon.com’s marketplace) and Whole Foods Market (including physical Whole Foods Market and Whole Foods Market 365 stores, and the website accessible at http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com).

➡️ Hotels booked directly with the hotel (plus through Chase Travel)

Merchants in this category include hotels and motels, and many smaller establishments like bed & breakfasts, and inns. Hotel accommodations not booked directly with the hotel will not qualify; for example, hotel accommodations purchased through travel agencies, discount travel sites, vacation clubs, tour operators, or as part of a package offered by merchants such as cruise lines and railways. However, please note that this quarter hotel purchases through Chase Travel will qualify in this category. Points will not be earned until charges are posted to your account. Purchases other than your room bill on the hotel premises will not be included in the category unless they classify as a hotel merchant; for example, restaurant or entertainment purchases. In addition, the purchasing of hotel points will not qualify in this category.

    ➡️ Restaurants

This category’s merchants’ primary business is sit-down or eat-in dining, including fast food restaurants and fine dining establishments. Merchants that sell food and drinks located within facilities such as sports stadiums, hotels and casinos, theme parks, grocery and department stores will not be included in this category unless the merchant has set up such purchases to be classified in a restaurant category. Bakeries, caterers, meal kit delivery services, and gift card merchants are not included in the category. Delivery and takeout services will be included if they classify as a restaurant merchant.

    How it Works

You can activate the new categories here, starting on March 15, 2024. Must activate by June 14, 2024.

This quarter Freedom Flex cardmembers can stack 5% quarterly cash back on Chase Travel hotel purchases and 5% quarterly cash back on dining with their standard 5% cash back on Chase Travel purchases and standard 3% on dining. However, because both quarterly cash back and standard cash back are earned as additional cash back on top of the base 1% cash back earned on each purchase, the most cardmembers will earn is 9% cash back on Chase Travel hotel purchases (1% on every purchase + additional 4% on Chase Travel + quarterly additional 4% on Chase Travel hotel purchases) and 7% cash back on dining (1% on every purchase + additional 2% on dining + quarterly additional 4% on dining).

To use the cashback as Ultimate Rewards points, you need to have one of the premium cards from Chase. That’s Chase Sapphire PreferredChase Sapphire ReserveInk Business Preferred or Ink Business Plus. You can then use points you earn with Chase Freedom cards as Ultimate Rewards. That gives you the ability to transfer to travel partners.

Along with 5% rotating categories, Freedom Flex cardmembers also earn 5% cash back on travel purchased through Chase’s Ultimate Rewards, 3% cash back on dining and drugstores and 1% cash back on all other purchases. Freedom Flex cardmembers also receive World Elite Mastercard Benefits, including cell phone protection and discounts with Lyft, Shoprunner and more, in addition to Priceless Experiences.

If you don’t have the Chase Freedom Flex card, you can sign up and earn a $200 bonus cash back when you spend $500 within the first three months. Chase Freedom is no longer available for new applications. You can also product change other Chase cards to Freedom Flex. This is a good option if you don’t want to apply for a new card.

    Guru’s Wrap-Up

These are good categories for Freedom cardholders. Amazon is a massive online retailer and Whole Foods is also a popular supermarket. However, some people might already earn 5% there with one of the Amazon cards. You also have hotels and restaurants this upcoming quarter, which should be useful for travelers.

Don’t forget to maximize this quarter’s categories as well, which are much better. You then have until the end of March to spend $1,500 (check your progress) on the following categories:

    • Grocery Stores (excluding Walmart & Target)
    • Fitness Clubs & Gym Memberships
    • Self-Care & Spa Services

      • Merchants in this category include supermarkets, merchants that offer a full-service grocery line of merchandise including a deli and bakery, as well as smaller grocery stores.
      • Some merchants that sell grocery items are not included in this category; for example, larger stores that sell a wide variety of goods and groceries, such as warehouse clubs, discount stores and some smaller merchants such as drugstores, and merchants that specialize in only a few grocery items.

      • Merchants that specialize in offering personalized or therapeutic services such as massage therapy, dietary and weight management counseling and personal training are not included in this category.
      • In addition, some merchants that sell a wide variety of general goods, which may include fitness or athletic apparel, sporting goods, dietary food, health food or similar supplements are not included in this category.
      • Also, certain lodging, hotel, motel, resort and central reservation services offering access to third party facilities that include fitness clubs or gyms are not included in this category unless they classify as a fitness
        club or gym membership merchant.
    • Self-Care & Spa Services
      • This category includes self-care and spa services, such as massages, spa treatments, manicures, tanning, and barber and salon services, purchased at merchant locations that specialize in providing these services.
      • Self-Care and spa services are typically provided by licensed professionals, however, services provided by medical professionals will not qualify.
      • Purchases of self-care and spa services at merchants that classify their location in another category, for example spa services purchased in a hotel, will not be included unless the merchant classifies the
        transactions in this category.
      • Purchases of related products and services, for example hair and skincare products purchased at a salon or an overnight stay at a spa, will also not be included unless the merchant classifies the transactions in this category.
