Pay Yourself Back® 

• Aeroplan points may be redeemed for a statement credit using Pay Yourself Back to cover travel purchases made with your Card, such as hotels, car rentals, ride-share, flights and more within 90 days from the redemption date through June 30, 2024 December 31, 2024. There is no limit to the amount of points cardmembers can redeem. Each point is worth 1.25 cents which means you can get $1,250 in statement credits for every 100,000 points redeemed.

Additional travel benefits include:  

• Automatically receive 25K Elite Status for the remainder of the calendar year, plus the following calendar year, allowing primary cardmembers to enjoy benefits such as priority check-in, early boarding, cabin class upgrades and more on Air Canada flights 
• Up to $100 credit toward Global Entry, TSA Precheck or NEXUS fee credit every four years

The breakdown of this offer is also slightly different from the previous 100K bonus that we saw earlier this year. You will earn 75K when you spend $4,000 in the first three months, and the rest of the points when you spend $20,000 total in the first 12 months.

The card provides tons of value considering it has a $95 annual fee. You also earn 3X on dining and groceries. And those points are useful even if you don’t specifically use Air Canada much or the Aeroplan program in general. You can use points to book flights on other airlines and use Chase’s Pay Yourself Back tool to get a value of 1.25 cents per point.

The card can earn you Aeroplan status and has several other benefits. One that stands out is the $100 credit toward Trusted Traveler Programs. Besides the usual Global Entry and TSA Precheck, it also covers NEXUS. You also get World Elite Mastercard benefits.

Aeroplan Card, 40% Bonus Points on All Spend

Air Canada i celebrating its 40th anniversary with a bunch of deals. Two of those deals are for new and existing cardholders, giving them the opportunity to earn 40% more points for their credit card spend. Existing cardholders can take advantage of this offer for 4 days, while new cardholders can do so for 40 days. Check out the details below.

Existing Cardholders

Chase Aeroplan Credit cardmember must register for the Offer by clicking on the “Register Now” button by July 17, 2024. Purchases made with the Chase Aeroplan Credit Card will earn 40% more points for every $1 spent on Purchases from July 14, 2024 midnight ET through July 17, 202411:59 pm PT (the “Offer Period”) up to a maximum of $40,000 in spend on Purchases.

New Cardholders

The Offer is available for any individual who has never held an Aeroplan credit card, of any type, regardless of card issuer. To qualify for and receive the Offer you must apply for the Chase Aeroplan Credit Card between midnight ET July 8, 2024 through 11:59 pm PT July 17, 2024. Make your first purchase by midnight PT August 31, 2024 and earn 40% more points for every $1 spent on Purchases made in the first 40 days from the first purchase date, up to a maximum of $40,000 in spend on Purchases.

Aeroplan Adds Warning to Pay Yourself Back Feature

In January of this year Chase launched a new redemption option Aeroplan cardholders who can redeem Aeroplan miles for purchases made with the card, at a value of 1.25 cents each. There’s no limit on how many points you can redeem through December 31, 2023. After that, there’s a cap of 50,000 points.

But Aeroplan being a transfer partner for Chase Ultimate Rewards, American Express Membership Rewards, Capital One Miles, and Bilt Rewards, this sounded like an amazing opportunity. In theory it provides a 1.25 cash-out option for all those programs.

However, a Chase representative told us soon after that “Air Canada and Aeroplan’s intention is that the Pay Yourself Back feature be used for points earned with Chase, through the Chase Aeroplan Card or Ultimate Rewards Points Transfer.” And they’re going after those that use the Pay Yourself Back feature for unintended purposes. At least one cardholders has all accounts shut down by Chase, after cashing out around 5 million points.

Now Aeroplan has a warning on its Pay Yourself Back page, with a reminder for cardholders:

REMINDER: Only Aeroplan Points earned under the Aeroplan Program, the Chase Aeroplan Card, and Chase Ultimate Rewards can be used for Chase Pay Yourself Back. Points converted from other programs are not eligible. If you proceed contrary to these terms, the Aeroplan Program and Chase Aeroplan Card reserves the right to reverse your point redemption or freeze your Aeroplan Membership account.

So clearly they’re watching these redemptions more carefully. It’s best to abide by the rules, especially if you’re redeeming very large amounts of points, as those are the most likely targets.
