  • 4 new restaurants (+ an Indian grocery store) are opening in Charlotte

    Charlotte is gaining more than a few new dining options, and any one of them could be your new favorite.

    This week, I reported on five recent or upcoming restaurant openings, including a woman-owned social club and café, a popular sandwich spot and an all-in-one supermarket and food hall serving traditional Indian cuisine.

    Plus, a Charlotte-area café known for its all-day breakfast and lunch is getting a second chance.

    Here’s what’s set to join the city’s growing food scene:

    A women’s social, co-working and wellness club taking shape in Charlotte’s Eastover/Myers Park neighborhood.

    Moxie will be a member’s only club offering locals the space to work, foster connection and prioritize their wellness. The space will also include on-site café and cocktail bar.

    “As remote work rises and loneliness increases, we believe women need more than flexible desks — they need belonging, support and infrastructure that matches their ambition,” owner Margaret Cheatham Williams said in a news release.

    The Juice Pod, a fast-casual wellness café, officially opened Feb. 21 in South End Charlotte, marking its first location in North Carolina.

    The chain is known for its superfood smoothies and acai bowls, and prioritizes using fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. Featured menu items include specialty avocado toast, cold-pressed juices, lattes and more.

    “Expanding to North Carolina has been a milestone for us,” said Danielle Leonhardt, who launched the health food concept with her sister, Christine Wyatt. “This new location allows us to bring that mission to even more people and be a part of more communities.”

    Chicken Salad Chick is bringing its gourmet sandwiches and soups to the Lake Norman area.

    The fast-casual chain, known for its various flavors of chicken salad, is slated to open a new restaurant at Magnolia Plaza in Cornelius. The grand opening celebration is Tuesday, March 10.

    This will be its sixth Charlotte-area location, joining spots in Matthews, Concord and Rock Hill. (Chicken Salad Chick once had restaurants in Steele Creek and uptown, but those closed).

    A Concord kitchen and bar is open again after it was briefly forced to shutter.

    Less than two weeks after Village Corner shared news of its impending closure, the restaurant hosted a grand re-opening celebration Feb. 17.

    Owner Ryan Bybee said backing from a new investor made it possible to welcome guests back to the all-day breakfast and brunch spot.

    “Last weekend the show of support and love was incredible,” he wrote in a message shared on Instagram. “It was emotional to know that would be the end. And then, an amazing person reached out wanting to make this happen. And this week it all came together.”

    Triveni Supermarket, a South Asian grocer and food hall, has officially opened the doors on a new store in Waxhaw.

    The grand opening was Saturday, Feb. 21.

    It’s part of the brand’s continued expansion in the Charlotte metro, joining locations in Concord, Pineville and, most recently, Tega Cay, South Carolina.

    At Triveni, customers can find groceries, spices and halal meat. There’s also an in-house bakery and prepared Indian dishes that guests can enjoy in the food court.

    Chicken Salad Chick is bringing more of its Southern-style chicken salad to the Charlotte metro.

    The sandwich shop, which offers more than a dozen flavors of chicken salad, will open the doors on a new restaurant Tuesday, March 10, at Magnolia Plaza in Cornelius.

    The grand opening celebration will kick off a week of giveaways, including free chicken salad for a year for the first 100 customers in line, according to a news release sent to CharlotteFive.

    Sing Bev Hospitality is behind the new Chicken Salad Chick of Cornelius and introduced the brand to Charlotte in 2014 with the opening of its restaurant at Carmel Commons in South Charlotte. This will be its sixth Charlotte-area location, joining spots in Matthews, Concord and Rock Hill. (Chicken Salad Chick once had restaurants in Steele Creek and uptown, but those closed).

    At Chicken Salad Chick, customers will find both classic and bold varieties of the lunchtime classic. Favorites include the Classic Carol, a traditional chicken salad made with celery, mayo and a secret seasoning blend, and the Kickin’ Kay Lynne, featuring a “punchy blend” of Buffalo, ranch, bacon, cheddar, jalapeños and sriracha.

    Beyond made-from-scratch chicken salad, the restaurant offers gourmet soups, sides and sandwiches. You can even grab a cake slice if you’re craving something sweet afterward.

    Chicken Salad Chick of Cornelius will be open Monday-Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

  • 5 new restaurants are opening in Charlotte, including a local barbecue joint

    Charlotteans can look forward to a slate of new restaurants opening soon in the city.

    This week, I reported on five recent or upcoming restaurant openings, including a woman-owned wine bar, a gourmet pizza spot and a Charlotte-area eatery serving modern Italian favorites

    Plus, a neighborhood barbecue joint with Asian flair will soon start hosting guests at its new flagship restaurant.

    Here a few spots foodies can look forward to:

    Mister O1 Extraordinary Pizza

    Mister O1 Extraordinary Pizza, known for its star-shaped pies, is coming to The Bowl at Ballantyne this fall.

    Founded by Italian chef Renato Viola, the Miami-born pizzeria has been recognized by the Michelin Guide for its “slow-fermented dough, premium ingredients and playful flavors.”

    Pizza lovers can look forward to Mister O1 signatures like the Star Luca made with mozzarella, Italian tomato sauce, spicy salami calabrese, basil and a ricotta-stuffed crust. There’s also the Coffee Paolo featuring Gorgonzola, honey, coffee and spicy salami for those with a taste for something bolder.

    “This opening feels less like adding another restaurant and more like bringing something genuinely new to Charlotte’s pizza scene,” managing partner Deepen Patel said in a news release.

    Crisp Uptown

    Crisp, known for its signature salads and wraps, is changing addresses The Alley at Latta Arcade. The fast-casual chain will find a new home in the former Young and Tate restaurant space in uptown, according to a recent permit request.

    A filing for the new digs at 132 Brevard Court seeks “a zoning inspection for the location with dba name of CRISP to get signoff for an ABC alcohol permit,” online documents show.

    Details on a possible opening date weren’t immediately available.

    The fast-casual chain had spots in Elizabeth and Dilworth, but both have closed.

    Velvet Coupe Wine Bar

    Velvet Coupe Wine Bar began welcoming guests to its new spot in Tega Cay, South Carolina this week and will host an official grand opening celebration Saturday, Feb. 14, a spokesperson told CharlotteFive.

    Locals are invited to enjoy live music while exploring the cozy new eatery serving a mix of “approachable” yet unique wines and light bites.

    “We are a women-owned business with an exceptional woman chef, bringing together a love of great wine and thoughtfully prepared food,” co-owner Jessica O’Connor told CharlotteFive. “Our space is comfortable yet elevated.”

    “We’re pretty passionate about it and excited to share it with the Charlotte community.”

    Taverna Italian American Eatery

    Taverna Italian American Bistro will soon begin hosting customers at its new spot in Lake Wylie, South Carolina, the restaurant recently shared on social media.

    Offering modern Italian and American dishes, it’s set to replace Lily’s Bistro after the latter was sold.

    Details on a possible opening date weren’t immediately available.

    The Improper Pig

    Local barbecue joint The Improper Pig will open the doors on its flagship restaurant in Plaza Midwood on Monday, February 16.

    Owned by Stomp, Chomp & Roll hospitality group, the new 3,100-squarefoot spot will feature an outdoor bar and expanded kitchen with a wood-fired grill. Customers can look forward to favorites like Improper Pig’s St. Louis-style ribs and brisket, as well as a few new offerings.

    Vegetarian options are also on the menu, including collard greens, smoked tofu and Asian slaw.

    “Our whole customer experience is come in, eat great food, in a relaxed atmosphere welcome to everyone,” founder Will Bigham told CharlotteFive.

  • New restaurant + bar to replace shuttered SouthPark tavern. What to know

    Charlotte foodies can look forward to a new neighborhood restaurant and bar coming soon to SouthPark.

    The Craic is set to open in the coming months, taking over the shuttered Rusty Bucket Restaurant and Tavern space, according to a news release sent to CharlotteFive.

    Meaning “good vibes” in Gaelic, the new concept strikes a balance between fine dining and a cozy neighborhood café experience. Customers can look forward to classic dishes like pot roast, pork loin and trout.

    Burgers and wings are also on the menu alongside oven-fired pizzas, pretzels and other bar bites.

    “We wanted to create a restaurant and bar that feels welcoming from the moment you arrive,” Parker Starre, co-owner and general manager of The Craic, said in the release. “It’s a place where professionals can meet for brunch or lunch, families feel comfortable at dinner and regulars can settle in late at night and feel completely at home.”

    Starre, a former Rusty Bucket employee turned partner, is part of a larger Charlotte-based hospitality team that brought The Craic to life.

    Veteran operator Chris Healy will oversee the restaurant, with help from co-owener and former WBTV sports reporter Delano Little. Chef Danny O’Connell will head the restaurant’s culinary program, while Sarah Pinto will oversee the bar.

    A sprawling 4,622-square-foot space, The Craic seats up to 177 guests across its indoor, bar and patio areas, according to the release. It will also feature a “a semi-enclosed, drinks-only nook” accessed through a secret pass-through window.

    Other bar highlights include:

    • 30+ beers on tap
    • 8 temperature controlled wine dispensers
    • A curated bottle list
    • Craft cocktails made with house-made syrups

    The Craic will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. with brunch, lunch and dinner offerings.

  • ‘Superfood cafe’ to open doors on a new spot in University City. What to know

    A health-forward café is expanding in Charlotte with plans to bring tasty, nutritious food options to the UNC Charlotte area.

    Vitality Bowls and local entrepreneurs Ray and Kusuma Mullapudi are teaming up to open a new spot in University City, according to a news release sent to CharlotteFive.

    The health food eatery, which specializes in acai bowls, is slated to open in the coming months, although the exact timeline is unclear. It will mark Vitality Bowl’s second Charlotte location; the other is on West Bland Street in South End.

    Ray Mullapudi said it was the brand’s approach to food that drew him to the opportunity to open its newest cafe.

    “Everything is freshly prepared, made with real superfoods, and never padded with unnecessary fillers,” he said in the release. “In a community like Charlotte, especially with the nearby college campus, there’s a growing demand for food that’s both convenient and genuinely good for you.”

    “Students and residents alike are looking for options that support busy, active lifestyles without sacrificing quality.”

    Beyond acai bowls, Vitality Bowls offers salads, wraps, smoothies, toasts, grain bowls and cold-pressed juices. Signature menu items include the Superfood Bowl — featuring acai, pitaya, almond milk, organic granola, cacao nibs and goji berries.

    Bowls can be customized with a varietey of toppings including almond butter, bee pollen and gluten-free granola.

  • Restaurant chain with ‘classic comfort food’ to open second spot in Ballantyne

    An American gastropub serving comfort food classics and “killer cocktails” is expanding in Charlotte.

    Culinary Dropout has plans to open a second location at the Bowl at Ballantyne, according to a permit request viewed by CharlotteFive, although the timeline for the move is unclear.

    The new spot, slated for 15220 Bowl Street, will occupy an existing two-story building in the dining and entertainment district. Work on the project includes a new commercial kitchen, restrooms, finishings and furniture, along with structural, plumbing and mechanical upgrades, documents show.

    “There is an indoor/outdoor bar and patio on the second level,” the permit reads. “There is also an exterior patio on the first floor.”

    CharlotteFive reached out to Culinary Dropout for more information Monday, Feb. 2 and was awaiting a response.

    The Arizona-based chain has more than a dozen locations in nine states, including its only North Carolina spot in South End that opened in 2023. It’s part of Fox Restaurant Concepts, helmed by James Beard-nominated chef Sam Fox.

    South End “has become a hotspot for young people, families and professionals, making it a prime location for Culinary Dropout,” Fox told CharlotteFive at the time. “Whether you’re enjoying a family dinner, grabbing a drink after work, hanging out before a Panthers game or just out for a fun night with friends, this restaurant is a special place that is all things to all people.”

    On the menu, foodies will find classic pub bites from soft pretzels and barbecue pork belly nachos to fried chicken and hot wings. Salads, pizza, sandwiches and other “comfort food classics” are also available.

    Customers can choose from 17 handcrafted cocktails, or sip on their favorite beer or wine.

    “We’re creating a space where flavors pop, where every roll and dish is a moment to savor,” the restaurant’s website says. “Our brand embodies the energy and joy of a bustling Shinjuku night, with bold, playful visuals and tech-driven dining designed to make each visit feel fresh, exciting, and new.”

    It will be Shinjuku’s second North Carolina location; the other is in High Point. There are plans to open additional locations in Raleigh and Winston-Salem.

    Sushi lovers can look forward to premium sushi, nigiri and more than a dozen specialty rolls.

    Republica Restaurant + Lounge

    After weeks of delays, Republica Restaurant + Lounge will finally reopen in Matthews.

    Customers are invited to a soft opening at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, as the eatery debuts its updated space, menu and cocktails, according to an Instagram post.

    The Matthews restaurant, which specializes in Dominican and Latin cuisines, temporarily closed in November due to U.S. Customs and Border Protection operations in the Charlotte area. There were plans to reopen sooner, however continued crackdowns caused further delays.
