  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration in Huntersville Jan. 19 – Charlotte On The Cheap

    Huntersville Parks & Recreation is presenting a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration on Monday, January 19, 2026, from 3 to 5 p.m., at David B. Waymer Recreation Center, 14008 Holbrooks Road, Huntersville, North Carolina.

    This event is free to attend, and for all ages.

    Beginning promptly at 3 p.m. the program will feature light refreshments and a mobile museum of displays to explore. Guests will enjoy local speakers and performers to commemorate Dr. King’s legacy at 4 p.m.

    This year’s display, provided by Thankful Heritage Museum, will consist of approximately 400 African American artifacts and civil rights era memorabilia — specifically, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr content consisting of newspapers, magazines, books, pens, plaques, albums and biographies.

    This event is expected to be a cross-generational experience. For elders, it will offer a nostalgic walk through history. For younger visitors, it presents a meaningful opportunity to connect with the stories their parents, grandparents, and educators have shared.

    When five Howard University students sat on a segregated Maryland carousel in 1960, the arrests made headlines. When the largely Jewish community near Glen Echo Amusement Park joined the Black students in picketing, the first organized interracial civil rights protest in US history was born.

    Independent Picture House, 4237 Raleigh Street, Charlotte, North Carolina, is presenting a free screening of Ain’t No Back to a Merry-Go-Round on Monday, January 19, 2026, at 7:10 p.m., followed by a discussion. Follow the above link to reserve your tickets.

    The post-film discussion is with panelists Dr. Rodney Sadler, Professor and Director of the Center for Social Justice and Reconciliation at Union Presbyterian Seminary, and Rabbi Judith Schindler, the Sklut Professor of Jewish Studies and founding director of the Greenspon Holocaust and Social Education Center at Queens University of Charlotte.

    Bridging Musical Worlds–A Celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. is an annual MLK Day tradition in Charlotte that brings together music from many musical traditions, including jazz, classical, R&B and more.

    This event will be a powerful evening of music, memory, and meaning that honors the enduring legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., while remembering the extraordinary life and gift of Attorney James E. Ferguson, II.

    This year’s theme, “Y’all Keep Working…”, drawn from Attorney Ferguson’s own words, calls us to reflection and action—reminding us that justice, culture, and community require sustained commitment.

    Bridging Musical Worlds takes place on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at 4 p.m., at Friendship Missionary Conference Center, 3400 Beatties Ford Road, in Charlotte’s Historic West Side.

  • Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Parade Jan 17 – Charlotte On The Cheap

    The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Parade will take place in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at 9:30 a.m.

    The parade will march down Tryon Street, beginning at Ninth Street and ending at Brooklyn Village Avenue.

    More than 100 community organizations, marching bands and step and drill teams will participate. Highlights will include floats with the student winners of the CMS MLK Art and Writing Contests and local performance groups.

    If you’d like to participate in the parade, registration is open through December 13, 2025.
