If the 2023 Golden Globes tell us anything about the fashion we’ll be seeing on the red carpet this awards season, we’re in for a treat.
The first big ceremony of the circuit kicked off with a parade of standout looks. Among our favorites: Sheryl Lee Ralph’s embellished purple Aliétte number, Seth Rogen’s delightfully pink Dior Men suit, Britt Lower’s sculptural Bach Mai gown.

Have you ever wondered what’s in a makeup artist’s makeup bag? Well, it’s safe to say that it’s probably a combination of eye shadows, eyeliners, eye brow pencils, mascaras, foundations, blushes, lipsticks, and bronzers. However, it really comes down to the brand and the quality of the makeup that’s the biggest difference in what a professional MUA has versus an everyday beauty lover.
Kate Lee, a Chanel makeup artist, has been working alongside the brand for over 17 years. Over that time, she’s worked on the faces of some of the biggest names in Hollywood such as Anne Hathaway, Kaitlyn Dever, Emma Chamberlain, Charli D’Amelio, and other beloved celebrities to create jaw-dropping looks for award shows, television appearances, and red carpets.
To get the latest scoop on the best makeup products you should buy from Chanel, Lee shared some of her favorites from over the years and why she doesn’t leave home without them.
Last week Chanel opened the doors of Le Grand Numéro de Chanel, a one-month-only pop-up immersive exhibit in Paris celebrating the 100 years of Chanel fragrances. As the brand helps with a 40 million Euro renovation of their usual events home, the Palais Royale, Chanel erected a temporary venue just north of the Eiffel Tower to showcase the perfumes and their histories in a carnival-themed interactive experience harkening back to 1920’s Paris.
“Chanel perfumery has an existential aim,” explained Thomas du Pré de Saint Maur, Chanel’s Head of Global Creative Resources for Fragrance & Beauty, Fine Jewelry & Watches. “Le Grand Numéro de Chanel is an emotional journey, an opportunity to discover every facet of fragrance and the role it plays.”

The exhibition highlights No. 5, Bleu, Les Exclusifs, Mademoiselle Coco, and others in an odyssey of chic and social-media friendly salons. Dancers, bandleaders, a casino, a fragrance bar, Nicole Kidman’s gown from her No. 5 commercial, and even Andy Warhol’s portraits of Gabrielle Chanel are on display throughout the journey.

“Chance is a fundamental part of fragrance design, no matter what preconceived ideas one may have of certain raw materials and compositions,” said Chanel’s nose, Olivier Polge. “It’s not purely intellectual work, the sensual, organic component and one’s lived experiences are crucial.”
To celebrate the opening, friends of the house were invited to an exclusive evening preview. Marion Cotillard, Keira Knightley, Sadie Sink, Angéle, Ella Balinska, and Seo-Jun Park, were among many of the stylish onlookers who celebrated at dinner afterward. “The exhibition is visually rich, it’s magnificent!” Cotillard remarked.

Giveon made his own fragrance, while Camila Morrone — who along with mother, Lucila Solá — brought their Argentinian pride to the party, taking in the exhibit dutifully but proudly following along with the semi-final World Cup game on their iPhones. Thankfully, Argentina won.
The after-party brought guests to the Cabaret Room at Paris’s new Soho House, where the army of tweed-clad VIP’s danced late into the night.
The exhibit is now open to the public and closes shop on January 9th. With all this effort, can other cities look forward to the dazzling exhibit? One hopes, but no official confirmations from Chanel just yet.
Senegal, a country buzzing with inventiveness and artistry, proved to be the ideal setting for the collection, which was inspired by what the brand calls “a 1970s spirit.” Creative director Virginie Viard set the scene from the start – as attendees arrived at the former Palais de Justice, dancers from L’école Des Sables, filled the entrance, performing choreographer Dimitri Chamblas’s “slow show” (which he describes as a “a 20-minute intensive, collective dance whose movements are minute, precise, and concentrated—inspired by principal roots of trance, exultation, telepathy, and unconscious memories.”) As the dancers moved their bodies with precision, bustling guests were stopped in their tracks, forced to pause and fully absorb the magical moment.

Next, musician Obree Daman and his choir opened the show by joyfully singing “Salam Alaikum” (which translates to “peace be unto you”). École des Sables followed behind them, performing a mix of traditional and contemporary African dances. And then came the fashion – the collection offered a playful spin on ‘70s inspired looks, think figure-skimming flares with tunic tops, column knit dresses, oversized knits and towering platform footwear, all made in warm, inviting colors. DJ DBN Gogo closed out the show by playing hypnotic sounds and as the last model exited the runway, Viard appeared to a standing ovation after revealing a collection that somehow epitomized her modus operandi of “meeting, dreaming and building together, with others.”

December’s show was only the beginning for Chanel’s relationship with Dakar. Beginning in January, in partnership with Institut Fondamental d’Afrique Noire (IFAN), La Galerie du 19M (a platform for exhibitions, meetings, discoveries and the sharing of practices) will come to Dakar for a special residency focusing on embroidery and weaving trades open to the general public. Chanel hopes to create a long lasting impact and relationship with the Senegalese through a variety of other initiatives that will be announced next year.
Fashion, like most industries, has always been rife with nepotism. But right around the mid-2010s, celebrity children suddenly seemed to be taking over modeling: From the Hadids to Kendall Jenner to Kaia Gerber to Hailey Bieber (née Baldwin), a famous last name started to feel like a prerequisite for casting directors. Since then, we’ve only seen more descendants of famous families come of age, get thousands of Instagram followers and sign Miu Miu contracts.
We’ve also seen nepotism re-emerge as a hot topic of conversation, with stars like Zoë Kravitz, Maude Apatow and Lily-Rose Depp addressing the privilege from which they may or may not benefit in interviews.
“The internet cares a lot more about who your family is than the people who are casting you in things,” Depp said in her recent Elle cover story. “Maybe you get your foot in the door, but you still just have your foot in the door. There’s a lot of work that comes after that.”
Depp, a Chanel ambassador, straddles the line between Hollywood and fashion, and her comments spurred Instagram-story reactions from prominent models without famous last names.

“You have no fucking idea how much you have to fight to make people respect you. TAKES YEARS. you just get it by free day one,” wrote Vittoria Ceretti, for instance.
Love it or hate it, “nepo babies,” as Depp called them, are continuing to emerge as fashion darlings, and a new wave of them are perfectly positioned to dominate the industry and our Instagram feeds in 2023. We’re here to tell you about them, not judge.
Based on hours of Instagram stalking, scanning Miu Miu front rows and Chanel event tip sheets and polling industry colleagues, we compiled the below list of up-and-coming fashion nepo babies to watch. There are fashion and skin-care heiresses, scions of the world’s most famous tech entrepreneurs, gorgeous supermodel offspring and much more. Get to know each of these budding multi-hyphenate “It” girls below.

These are the stories making headlines in fashion on Wednesday.
Why Prada is appointing new leadership As announced Tuesday, Patrizio Bertelli and Miuccia Prada are appointing Andrea Guerra CEO of Prada Group. The shift comes as Bertelli, aged 76, and Prada, 73, are preparing to pass the reins on to the family’s next generation. (Their son, Lorenzo Bertelli, 34, has taken on an influential role at the company since 2017.) While the younger Bertelli is projected to take over Prada within the next few years, the company plans on first appointing external talent before easing into its new generation. “The market is likely to react positively to the management changes. While Lorenzo Bertelli has been instrumental in some of the initiatives of the group… it would have likely been too early for him to take on the role as group CEO,” says UBS analyst Susy Tibaldi. {Business of Fashion}
Chanel’s Éric Pfrunder has passed away Éric Pfrunder, Chanel‘s director of images for three decades and Karl Lagerfeld‘s close creative partner, passed away on Monday at the age 74. According to his son Jasper, Pfrunder had been suffering from a longtime illness. Throughout his prolific career, Pfrunder and Lagerfeld produced a range of editorial shoots for magazines such as American Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. “Eric was a precious member of the Karl Lagerfeld family, he will be sorely missed and will always be remembered as a crucial part of Karl’s history,” says Pier Paolo Righi, chief executive officer of Karl Lagerfeld. {WWD}

What’s driving renewed interest in perfume? While scent may not have previously been a priority when getting ready, the past few years have brought about a surge of interest in perfume. The trend is spearheaded by enthusiastic young people on social platforms like Twitter and TikTok, as well as the rise of scent podcasts and even emerging fragrance influencers. “I think a lot of it does have to do with, oddly, the brandification of yourself as an individual. Scent is just the next dimension of how you represent yourself and how you express yourself…” says Tynan Sinks, host of the podcast “Smell Ya Later.” Brands like Fragrantica and Soliani are creating new palettes of unfamiliar scents that cater to every demographic, leading to this renewed interest in personalized scents. {Nylon}
The Grand Shopping Tote (also known as the GST for short) is likely the roomiest style in Chanel’s history. To the disappointment of many Chanel lovers, the GST was discontinued in 2015, which has only made it more coveted by true fashion girls.
With plenty of room for the many necessities women carry on a daily basis, the bag rose to the height of popularity in the early to mid-2000s with reality stars from Paris Hilton to the entire cast of TheHills toting the bag on their arms. Today, it’s a rare vintage find, making it an instant buy for anyone in the know.
Though they tend to fall in and out of favor, kitten heels are queen.
Of all the heels you can wear, they rank high in comfort and versatility and give a slight boost in stature without the infamous pain of stilettos. The style options are also endless: These tiny-but-mighty shoes have been worn with wildly opposed aesthetics, from summer maxi dresses to colorful ’80s-inspired windbreakers to newly-trending “motorcore” looks. They’ve also stood the test of time, with celebrities like Audrey Hepburn wearing them in the 1960s, Princess Diana sporting them in the late ’90s and Chanel sending them down the Fall 2023 runway.
Still, they remain underrated, especially during peak party season. Our favorites are the ones with details that take them a notch up from basics, like a pink velour that’s perfect for the holidays or an easy mule you can pack for vacation. Shop 23 of the coolest kitten heels you can buy in the gallery below.
If you feel like your DIY manicures never look as perfect as your professional ones, listen up. According to both Bamber and Tucker, not tidying up is the number one mistake they spot among clients who have attempted an at-home manicure. “It’s also one of the easiest to avoid, but believe it or not it still happens,” says Bamber. “Leaving specks of polish on the surrounding areas of your nails will make them look messy and if you’re using gel, will most likely make them lift.”
When applying polish to your nails, Bamber recommends doing a single swipe down the centre of your nail to start, followed by a swipe on either side (overlapping if needed) and avoiding getting too close to the edge of your nails. “It’s always better to leave a tiny gap than to get polish on your skin,” she says. “You could even use a fine brush to go around the cuticle and side walls if you struggle with this,” she adds. And if you do get polish on your skin? “Always make sure to clean your nails up with nail polish remover on a cotton ball as quickly as possible.”
In addition, Tucker advises that overexposing gel and polish to skin can cause skin reactions. “I learned this the hard way and now live with the irony of being a nail artist who’s allergic to gel polish,” she says. “It’s usually only a problem if product is left uncured on the skin as the compound changes when it cures in the lamp, so be super careful with your application and if you do get any on your skin, wipe it off immediately.”
When it comes to investing in a luxury handbag, it’s obviously important to find a style you really, truly love. Equally important (and often overlooked) is educating yourself on which handbags will hold their value and never go out of style. The exclusive Birkin, for example, is forecasted to double in value in the next 10 years. But that’s not the only bag worth scooping up. To give you a sense of the bags worth your money, we tapped the experts at LePrix (the trusted online destination for pre-owned luxury) to spill on the styles you need to try. “To get the most resale value for your investment bag, I only have one piece of advice: Invest in the holy trinity—Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Hermès. While the value of luxury handbags can fluctuate due to trends or buzz, these three iconic brands in certain styles have the most resale value at LePrix,” the company told us. Keep scrolling to check out more on the top bags you should buy.
“The resale value of Hermès depends on the style, type of leather, and hardware,” Le Prix shares. “The power behind the Hermès brand is due to their limited quantities. This creates an unparalleled level of scarcity and exclusivity other brands have yet to achieve. While there’s no such thing as an Hermès waiting list, there is a certain waiting period for your dream Birkin or Kelly—depending on your relationship with your Hermès salesperson, the amount spent at Hermès over some time, and pure luck.
“The Birkin specifically is the most sought-after handbag of all. On the arms of celebrities including Victoria Beckham, Alessandra Ambrosio, Kate Moss, and the entire Kardashian-Jenner clan, this bag has exponentially increased in popularity. The fervor for Birkins transcends both retail and resale. LePrix stylists are constantly searching for Birkins through our consignment boutique partners for our customers. Birkin bag retail prices range from $9000 to $150,000 and can see resale prices up to $223,000.
“Most Birkins retain or increase in value, again depending on leather, hardware, and demand. If you happen to score the exclusive, highly sought-after black Birkin with gold hardware or otherwise known amongst the fashion tribe as ‘the holy grail,’ this bag will pay you back in spades.”
“Inspired by Grace Kelly, the Hermès Kelly bag also retains or increases in resale value,” Le Prix tells us. “The Kelly bag is a classic and happens to be a favorite for Miranda Kerr, Emma Watson, Sarah Jessica Parker, Rosamund Pike, Beyoncé, Karlie Kloss, and, again, the Kardashian-Jenners.”
“While the Birkin recently got buzz for beating the S&P 500, this is not the only handbag that has outperformed the S&P 500,” Le Prix shares. “Ten years ago, I purchased my first Chanel medium flap in caviar leather for $1600. This same exact bag now retails for $4900. That is a 206% return (not adjusted for inflation). Whereas, in the last decade, the S&P total nominal return was 49% (not adjusted for inflation). The resale value of this bag also retains or increases depending on leather and hardware. It’s also a constant favorite of Alexa Chung, Rita Ora, Demi Lovato, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, and Lauren Conrad.”
“Another bag to consider for investment is the Chanel Boy Bag,” says Le Prix. “While the Boy Bag is fairly new, introduced in 2011, it’s now a mainstay, joining the ranks of the classic flaps and reissue flaps. Five years ago, this bag started at $2500. Today the Chanel Boy Bag starts at $5100. It typically retains at least 90% of its resale value. You can find this bag on celebs like Jessica Biel, Leigh Lezark, Bella Thorne, and Taraji P. Henson.”
“The Neverfull continues to be one of our fastest-selling handbags on LePrix, and there’s a reason why,” Le Prix shares. “While certain fashion-industry reports dictate there’s a decline in the category of tote handbags for other brands, the Louis Vuitton Neverfull remains popular due to periodic price increases and high demand. The Neverfull is one of Louis Vuitton’s all-time most successful bags that come in endless options of materials as well as limited editions and special artist collaborations. It has been worn by A-listers like Sofía Vergara, Cara Delevingne, Diane Kruger, and Reese Witherspoon. It retains at least 85% of its resale value, unless it’s a rare limited-edition bag, which can see upward of double the resale value.”
Jennie Kim and Lily-Rose Depp cover the December Issue of Elle Jennie Kim of Blackpink and Lily-Rose Depp grace the cover of Elle in Chanel ensembles styled by Patti Wilson. Depp tells writer Véronique Hyland about growing up in the public eye, specifically recent headlines surrounding her family. “People have really wanted to define me by the men in my life, whether that’s my family members or my boyfriends, whatever. And I’m really ready to be defined for the things that I put out there,” Depp says. As for Jennie Kim, she talks with Laura Sirikul about her first acting gig, the Blackpink world tour and answers burning questions from Blinks. “It was my first time ever doing anything close to being an actor, so hopefully they like it,” the K-pop idol shares. The two are set to star in HBO’s upcoming and highly anticipated series, “The Idol.” See more images below.{Elle}
Gabriela Hearst wants you to know about nuclear fusion Chloé Creative Director Gabriela Hearst has always been environmentally conscious in her work, having been credited with the fashion industry’s first carbon-neutral runway in 2019. Nowadays, Hearst is taking her passion to the next level with her research into nuclear fusion, a cleaner (yet presently unattained) energy alternative. Heart’s Spring 2023 collection is inspired by visits to nuclear fusion labs across the country and the globe, her runway featuring physics-inflected designs and chemical patterns across clothes. Meanwhile, Hearst’s latest resort collection was aimed at spreading fusion literacy to the public, through motifs like laser-cut stars and spangled leather jackets. “What I can do is to use whatever platform I have to communicate about this energy,” the designer says. {Vanity Fair}
Old Hollywood was made new last night, thanks to Chanel, who assembled the buzziest young names in entertainment for a Parisian-themed fete on one of tinseltown’s oldest back lots. The dinner party was held in celebration of the 90th anniversary of Gabrielle Chanel’s first — and only — high jewelry collection, Bijoux de Diamants, designed in 1932. The pop-up, planetarium-like exhibition included the archive pieces, as well as the new anniversary collection in a glimmering display.

“I wanted to return to the essence of 1932 and to harmonize the message around three symbols: the comet, the moon, and the sun. Each heavenly body shines with its own light,” said Patrice Leguéreau, Director of the Chanel Fine Jewelry Creation Studio.
