After three awards shows, all in Los Angeles, Hollywood’s A-list is heading across the pond. Yes, it’s time for the BAFTAs, the annual ceremony that honors the best in British and international cinema. Presented by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, the BAFTAs are once again taking place at Royal Festival Hall in London’s Southbank Centre tonight, Feb. 22, but with a new host. This year, Alan Cumming is taking over duties from David Tennant, who hosted the ceremony for the past two years.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another netted the most nominations at 14, followed by Ryan Coogler’s Sinners with 13 and Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet and Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme, tied with 11 nods each. Leonardo DiCaprio, Timothée Chalamet and Michael B. Jordan are all up for Best Actor, while Kate Hudson, Jessie Buckley and Emma Stone are among the stars nominated for Best Actress. Along with the celeb-studded roster of nominees, the slate of presenters is equally impressive, including Aaron Pierre, Aimee Lou Wood, Alicia Vikander, Alia Bhatt, Bryan Cranston, Cillian Murphy, David Jonsson, Delroy Lindo, Emily Watson, Erin Doherty, Ethan Hawke, Gillian Anderson, Glenn Close, Hannah Waddingham, Karen Gillan, Kate Hudson, Kathryn Hahn, Kerry Washington, Little Simz, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Mia McKenna-Bruce, Michael B. Jordan, Miles Caton, Milly Alcock, Minnie Driver, Monica Bellucci, Noah Jupe, Olivia Cooke, Patrick Dempsey, Regé-Jean Page, Riz Ahmed, Sadie Sink, Stellan Skarsgård, Stormzy and Warwick Davis.

But before the best and brightest in film head into Royal Festival Hall, they’ll walk the always-glamorous BAFTAs red carpet in their most dazzling sartorial ensembles. Last year’s red carpet did not disappoint, with highlights including Cynthia Erivo in Louis Vuitton, Mikey Madison in Prada, Monica Barbaro in Armani Privé and Lupita Nyong’o in Chanel—all custom, of course. So let’s get ready for the 2026 iteration—below, see all the best and most exciting fashion moments from this year’s BAFTAs red carpet.

  • Atlanta woman thanks Chanel sales rep for being brutally ‘honest.’ But people don’t think her intentions were pure: ‘She’s trying to make more money’

    [ad_1]

An Atlanta woman went inside a Chanel store to purchase a mini-bag. However, the sales associate surprised her when she talked her out of it. The associate argued that the mini was too small to fit anything inside, despite being cute. Instead, the Chanel employee pointed her in an entirely different direction, which led her to purchase a bag with a different look and feel.

TikToker @thebargainholic was surprised by the associate’s candidness, posting her encounter in-store to TikTok afterward. Since then, the video has garnered over 728,000 viewers, with many chiming in to share their thoughts on the associate’s sales tactics.

Commenters thought the honesty was a commendable aspect of @thebargainholic’s overall shopping experience, but some mentioned that her intentions may have been to sell a more expensive bag. Still, is that such a bad thing when making a high-end purchase?

    Is it honesty or upselling?

In @thebargainholic’s video, the sales associate said, “ Super cute, but you’re not really getting anything in that,” indicating that the bag ultimately wasn’t worth purchasing in comparison to some of Chanel’s larger products.

@thebargainholic said, “Thank you so much for your honesty,” cutting the clip, and presumably continuing the conversation with her camera off. Later, the Chanel buyer appeared happy with her purchases, posting two separate TikToks showing off the bags she ended up with. But it left many wondering, was it honesty or was it upselling?

For many, the truth incentivizes shoppers to continue shopping, as it creates a rapport between a sales associate and a customer. “My [Louis Vuitton sales associate] did the same thing when I wanted the Nano Speedy and advised me to get the Speedy 20. She was 100% right and I’ve been shopping with her for 3 years now. Honesty builds loyalty,” said one commenter.

However, others mentioned that it was clearly a sales tactic. “I work in sales and at least you call it honesty, [because] I call it upselling.”

When upselling, a sales associate will commonly offer an “upgrade” or better product that has more value. In doing so, they may get a better commission or larger margins when a customer intends to make a purchase.

In this case, @thebargainholic wanted a smaller bag and ended up with one that’s most likely more expensive. While it may fit her lifestyle better, it was technically upselling, as the store associate most likely sold a higher margin product.

@thebargainholic I really appreciate it in luxury retail when a sales associate is honest with you about the bags instead of just trying to make a sale. @ChanelOfficial #foryou #chanel #chanelbag #honesty #shopping ♬ original sound – TheBargainholic?️?

What bag did @thebargainholic end up getting?

Ultimately, @thebargainholic didn’t end up purchasing the “clutch on chain” micro-bag she was looking at in her video. Instead, she went with a slightly larger, brown leather bag and a black vanity bag. Both of the bags were ultimately larger than the mini she was looking at, although it’s difficult to ascertain exactly what price they were listed at in-store.

Ultimately, it seemed like a better decision for the shopper, as it was her first Chanel purchase. Commenters recommended getting “minis” after making bigger leather goods purchases in a collection.

And, as many viewers echoed, Chanel Minis genuinely don’t hold as many products. As one commenter described, “She’s right ! Minis are cute, [but] personally, they can do nothing for me! I leave the house with half my bathroom.”

Even if the tactic seems to point her toward a more expensive product, it seems @thebargainholic appreciated the Chanel sales associate’s commentary, which pointed her toward a bag she might love even more than the Chanel mini she originally had her eye on.

The Mary Sue reached out to @thebargainholic and Chanel via email for comment.

  • Lil Baby, Lil Yachty Team Up for Holiday Giveback in Atlanta’s West End

    [ad_1]

Photo by Tabius McCoy/The Atlanta Voice

On Saturday, December 20, families from across Atlanta gathered in the city’s West End for a large-scale holiday giveback led by Grammy-winning rapper Lil Baby and his nonprofit, The Jones Project, in partnership with the Lil Yachty Foundation.

Phoo by Tabius McCoy/The Atlanta Voice

Families received toys, bikes, and gift cards, along with winter essentials including coats donated by Canada Goose, more than 800 Tech Fleece sweatsuits provided by Nike, and hats supplied by Lids. Children moved between stations offering hot chocolate and candy bars and posed for photos with Santa. The Atlanta Hawks mascot, Harry the Hawk, alongside the Flight Team, also made special appearances, hosting merchandise stations and giveaways that added to the excitement. Food partners for the day included Sonic, Raising Cane’s, and Heinz.

The event took place at a West End production warehouse along Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard, which was transformed into a festive environment filled with music, food stations, and family-friendly activities.

Photo by Tabius McCoy/The Atlanta Voice

Several families arrived hours before the event officially began, bundled up against temperatures that felt more like Minnesota than Atlanta. Diamond Jones, an Atlanta mother, said she and her children came early after learning from past events that lines can grow quickly. “My kids and just being able to get out and see faces, giving them a chance to see what it’s like to receive,” Jones said. “Normally we’re giving, so just to get out and see the many different things and the different stations,” Jones said. Her family received PlayStation controllers, a Nike Tech jacket, and gifts for all four of her children, including a bike for one of her daughters.

Photo by Tabius McCoy/The Atlanta Voice

Another attendee, Chanel, a Westside Atlanta native, said she brought her two children to support Lil Baby and witness the impact of his community work firsthand. Her children received bikes, a four-wheeler toy, a Nerf gun, and winter accessories such as coats, scarves, and hats. She said the event created excitement for the holiday season while reinforcing a sense of connection between artists and the neighborhoods they come from. “They’re excited to come here and just support what he’s doing for the community,” she said.

The Jones Project, founded by Lil Baby, is a community-based nonprofit focused on empowering children and families in Atlanta’s historic West End by providing access to food, clothing, educational support, and safe spaces. The Lil Yachty Foundation centers its work on youth development, education, and mentorship, particularly in metro Atlanta and Southeast Georgia. Together, the organizations used the holiday giveback to reinforce a shared message of generosity, visibility, and support for families who need it most during the winter months.

Members of the Lil Yachty Foundation were on site throughout the afternoon, helping distribute items and interact with families as Lil Yachty moved through the crowd, greeting attendees. Reflecting on the day, he emphasized the importance of presence and participation during the holiday season. “It feels good giving back”.

  • ‘Luxury is not luxuriating’: New York woman goes to Chanel to get $3K Coco Crush ring resized. It turns into a whole debacle—now she’s out hundreds

    [ad_1]

If one buys a luxury good, they understandably desire a luxury experience. However, that’s not always what they get.

Shoppers have reported a host of negative experiences purchasing high-end goods. From items that arrive in lackluster packaging to mistreatment at the stores themselves, luxury customers say that many upper-echelon shopping experiences leave them wanting more.

Now, another user has recounted their experience with a luxury label. This time, the brand is Chanel. According to TikTok user Debbie (@detectivedelulu), a recent trip to their New York store ended in frustration. What did they mess up?

A Chanel Ring Resize Goes Wrong

In a video with over 927,000 views, Debbie recalls going to a Chanel store to get a Coco Crush ring resized. She says she received the ring as a gift.

After waiting for 30 minutes, she was allowed to enter the store. She was greeted by a man named Gregory, of whom she is very complimentary.

“I told him off right off the bat. ‘Listen, this ring too big. I have all the receipts. Can I exchange it for a smaller size?’ He was like, ‘Oh, let me see what I can do for you.’ Blah, blah. He goes to the back, comes back, and says, ‘Yes,’” the TikToker starts.

Following this, Debbie tried on several sizes. While doing this, she discovered she liked a different color of the ring more and asked if she could exchange it. Gregory assured her that she could.

From here, the good news continued. Debbie was told that her new ring was actually cheaper, so she had a $50 credit she could spend at the store. Debbie selected the compact mirror.

Things Take A Turn For The Worse

While everything seemed to be going OK, Debbie soon learned that the exchange wasn’t as straightforward as she thought.

First, she was informed that, even though she could exchange the rings, she would have to pay New York taxes on the new ring. This essentially dissolved her $50 credit. While Debbie says she didn’t mind paying the taxes, she says she wished she had been informed of this before getting excited about the potentially free mirror.

Second, Debbie said she wanted to pay with cash. The cashier said they could only accept the money if they used a money counter—even though Debbie simply paid with “two $100 bills and two twenties” for a total of “four paper bills.”

“Right next to her is another sales representative counting cash with his hands,” she states. “I’m not talking, like, $10 bills. It was, like, a stack of 20s. Hundreds.”

All of this extra time spent meant that Debbie missed an appointment she had previously planned. Seeing that the time was lost, she decided to get another Chanel ring cleaned.

Can Chanel Even Clean A Ring?

Initially, Debbie’s proposed ring cleaning seemed to go off without a hitch. While the ring was three years old, she was told it was covered by the brand’s cleaning warranty. Debbie says that she was informed the cleaning would take between 30 minutes and an hour; the TikToker responded that she would simply wait for the cleaning to finish in-store.

However, soon afterwards, a woman came and “kneel[ed] in front” of Debbie.

“She tells me, ‘Oh, um, for you to get this polished, because of the material, whatever it is, we have to send it out, and that may take up to weeks for you to get it back,’” the TikToker recalls.

Knowing of horror stories in which items were not returned for months or years, Debbie requested her ring back, at which point she was told that the ring was currently being given an “ultrasound.” This was probably a misstatement; the worker was likely referring to the concept of ultrasonic cleaning.

Overall, Debbie marks herself as disappointed with the experience, noting that one of the “gifts” that came with the ring was simply promotional material.

    Bad Experiences At Chanel Stores

On Reddit, users recalled their own negative experiences at Chanel stores.

“Was given a damaged and scratched bag to open for Christmas,” said a user. “Went back to return it and was told I was the one who damaged it and they wouldn’t exchange it.”

“I was in a boutique this summer and the SA was discussing fashion when she commented on ‘plus size ladies like us,’” recounted another. “I’m a size 10.”

“Completely ignored at the Chanel in Vegas,” noted a third. “left without buying anything.”

    @detectivedelulu Chanel, don’t call your advertisement cards a gift. #chanel #cococrush #vent #relateable #fyp ♬ original sound – Debbie

In the comments section of Debbie’s video, users noted the poor service of the Chanel store.

“Girl even Pandora offers free cleaning and on the spot no hassle,” said a user.

“Next time get a Cartier ring,” advised another. “I got in Paris and they even give you a small cleaning kit!”

“It’s insane to me that luxury companies have worse customer service than Kohls,” noted a third.

The Mary Sue reached out to Chanel via website contact form and Debbie via TikTok DM and comment.

  • Tilda Swinton, Edward Enninful, and More Celebrate Film at the BFI and Chanel Filmmaker Awards

    [ad_1]

At the annual BFI and Chanel Filmmaker Awards on Thursday, Tilda Swinton, Edward Enninful, and BFI chief executive Ben Roberts came together to celebrate creative audacity in film and award prizes to emerging filmmakers. This year’s awards were given to rising filmmakers Harry Lighton (writer and director of Pillion), the Neurocultures Collective (which consists of Sam Chown-Ahern, Georgia Bradburn, Benjamin Brown, Robin Elliott-Knowles, and Lucy Walker) and Steven Eastwood, and Sandhya Suri (writer and director of Santosh).

So what exactly does creative audacity entail? According to Roberts, “I think it means that we see someone taking some risks in their work. This work is, how do we help people thread the needle of big, bold, imaginative, creative, risky ideas? They might fail spectacularly as well. But audiences love it when creative audacity lands.”

Each of the award winners received financial support of 20,000 British pounds to aid in expanding their work and exploring new ideas. The winners were selected by a jury led by Swinton, Enninful, and Roberts.

“I think all artists have to aim for [originality],” said Swinton during Thursday’s event at Claridge’s. “That’s the project. Because no artist sets out to be a facsimile of anybody else. What we need is original artists. We don’t need people dressed up as other people pretending to be other people. We need original, authentic voices.”

Guests enjoyed a Champagne reception, presentation of the awards, and a sociable standing lunch. Attending the star-studded event were actors Imogen Poots, Nathalie Emmanuel, Sophie Cookson, George MacKay, Lily Allen, and Connor Swindells.

“I think what [the BFI and Chanel Filmmaker Awards] demonstrate is how deeply Chanel understands what artists’ lives are, what artists need to make work. They need time and they need support. Money is support. But money is also time,” Swinton explained, while enjoying a miniature ice cream cone. “You can’t eat it and not be funny. No, you can’t stand in an insouciant way,” she said jokingly of the tiny dessert.

Lighton, whose debut feature, Pillion, stars Alexander Skarsgård as a biker in the world of BDSM**,** was a highlight of the Cannes Film Festival. Upon collecting his award, Lighton noted how his parents would see the film for the first time this Saturday. “How his parents react will be livestreaming,” said Roberts.

Suri’s narrative feature debut, Santosh, was the UK’s official selection for the best-international-feature Oscar in 2024, while The Stimming Pool is an experimental docu-fiction made, in part, by a collective of autistic artists.

Chanel and the BFI have been partners since 2022, and are striving to create a burgeoning community of filmmakers. Previous winners include Kathryn Ferguson (Nothing Compares), Savannah Leaf (Earth Mama), and Pinny Grylls (Grand Theft Hamlet).

The afternoon was a testament to the power of film. “I honestly believe people need cinema. And as I say, they would really miss it if it wasn’t there,” Swinton said.

  • All the Stars at Paris Fashion Week 2025

    [ad_1]

There is perhaps no city in the world more closely associated with fashion than Paris. The City of Light was the birthplace of haute couture in the 1800s, and its ever-so-chic history continues to this day. Paris Fashion Week 2025 is upon us, and the most fashionable celebrities, tastemakers, and industry VIPs are flooding the cobblestone streets to take in the shows and parties, see what’s heading down the runway, and be seen in the front row, dressed to the nines.

This edition of Paris Fashion Week is especially important thanks to a bevy of recent creative director changes, a veritable musical chairs in an industry where people tend to hold onto their jobs at the top for decades at a time. There’s Jonathan Anderson at Dior, of course, and Proenza Schouler co-founders Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez filling his vacant seat at Loewe. Matthieu Blazy took a new job at Chanel, and Demna went from Balenciaga to Gucci, with former Valentino designer Pierpaolo Piccioli taking the reins at Balenciaga. There’s plenty of to see—and gossip about at cocktail parties—at this Fashion Week in particular.

Paris Fashion Week officially kicked off on September 29, and concludes October 7. From Chanel to Zimmerman, and everything in between, the world’s foremost fashion designers will be showing their latest collections, with the A-List topping their guest lists.

The summer sun brings out the kid in us, water activities, sun bathing, sports, or just long walks….but our lips might not be so excited. Lips are vulnerable to EV rays and often get forgotten. The skin on the lips can’t produce its own natural moisture or protective oils, making it more prone to drying out, so it is important to give them a little assistance.  Could you help your lips with CBD balm…yes, and here is why.

I Live for Couture Week—Here’s How I’m Re-Creating the Best Looks

Let’s be honest for a moment. Fashion can feel frivolous at times, especially within the context of contemporary couture. It can sometimes feel ostentatious compared to our approachable capsule wardrobe. Because modern couture is inaccessible to most consumers and there’s so much happening in the world, it’s only natural for most to ask, Is haute couture really that serious? I’d never surmise that it would have the weight that so many other topics do in the world, but I’d also never discount its influence. Like it or not, couture has often acted as a reflection of current times—it can tell us what’s happening in the stars and the stock exchange. Long before something blows up on TikTok, you better believe its origins can be traced back to couture fashion week.

The essence of what’s fashionable always comes back to haute couture because it’s about the craft of making clothing. It’s not about hyperconsumption; it’s about the art. That feels particularly topical as more conversations in the cultural canon center on the idea of adopting the quiet luxury ethos—the shift from keeping up with trends to investing in timeless items. Couture offers people a permission slip to escape from the never-ending trend cycle, and it’s a way to fall in love with well-made clothing again. At best, couture can make us see the world in a new light or, at the very least, change our wardrobes. If you’re still not convinced about how couture can apply to your relationship with your own closet, you’ll want to keep reading.

After hours of image research, I’ve narrowed down the six best spring/summer 2024 couture collections based on how they made haute couture feel relatable to our everyday lives. Plus, I’ve identified three looks from each show that are easy to re-create with shopping recommendations. Prepare to become a lover of haute couture.

  • Jasmine Tookes on Her Beauty Must-Haves, Signature Style, and Fitness Regimen

Jasmine Tookes on Her Beauty Must-Haves, Signature Style, and Fitness Regimen

    [ad_1]

You’ve been embraced as an It girl on TikTok over the past couple of years. How would you describe your everyday approach to beauty and style?

My everyday approach to beauty is enhancing my natural features and finding those little things that make me special. When I watch beauty tutorials on my makeup looks by other people, they often try to just copy what I’m doing, but that’s not always necessarily the best thing to do. I think you should look at my videos, take your pieces from it, and spin it in a way that fits your face. For example, if my contour is sitting up here because I have a higher cheekbone, that doesn’t mean yours needs to be there. I think it’s really all about looking at yourself and figuring out the parts of your face that can be enhanced.

I take a very classic approach when it comes to fashion. One thing I always say since it’s been installed in me since I was younger is to never follow trends. A lot of the time when you follow trends, you’ll look back five years from now and wonder, “What was I thinking?!” I stay true to a really timeless style, which allows me to never look back and question the fashion decisions I’ve made in the past. I really gravitate toward classic suit blazers, nice trousers, a good belt, and having staple jewelry, which is so important to help pull an outfit together. You can have the simplest outfit on, and if you also have fabulous earrings, you look so luxe and chic.

We can never get enough of your “get ready with me” videos, luxury shopping hauls, and photo shoots. What message do you hope to impart to your viewers and followers?

When people look at my content, I want them to feel inspired. About [my recent] luxury haul in particular, I had no idea the effect it would have on people. They instantly went out and treated themselves to amazing products! I love to be an inspiration and push people toward things that they would never ordinarily do for themselves and become what they didn’t think they could be. I also hope I can inspire people with their style and health journeys!

I just posted about the Pressed Juicery juice cleanse that I did, and so many people responded to that saying that they wanted to step their game up and start the year off right. There were so many benefits to that cleanse! It helped with bloating and made my skin so glowy. I also hope that … the workout and fitness routines I post … can also inspire people to feel good inside and out.

How has becoming a mother shifted your self-view?

It has made me more aware of a lot of things than I was before. It’s made me become a lot more healthy because, of course, I want to give my daughter the healthiest options for when she’s eating and when she’s out and about to avoid chemicals. My approach to health and wellness has grown and improved with her in my life, which has been really interesting and fun. I love having a lot of positivity around her, so in my daily life, I try to remain super happy and positive all the time, which I have always done. Now, I think about creating a safe space and energy for her. It’s been the best journey ever! She’s the sweetest, cutest little girl, and I just can’t wait to be her mom for the rest of her life.

What are some things you’re looking forward to in 2024? Are there any projects you can share with us?

My day-to-day consists of my activewear brand, so I’m really excited for the future of that and have a lot of exciting things coming. We’re still a really small team, so it’s fun! I’m wearing a lot of hats, so it’s nice to see everything coming to life, and all of the aspirations and dreams I had for the brand are really starting to form.

Dua Lipa Wore the Ideal Jeans-and-Flats Outfit for a Day Date With Callum Turner

    [ad_1]

Dua Lipa is a fashion fixture on the Grammys red carpet every single year, and I have no doubt that she’ll bring her A game for the awards this Sunday. I’m waiting with bated breath to see what she’ll choose to wear, but in the meantime, let’s chat a bit about her off-duty style because it’s also worth noting.

Photographed in Los Angeles with Masters of the Air star Callum Turner, Lipa wore the ideal jeans-and-flats outfit for a daytime date. Specifically, she wore a black-and-white Chanel tank top, Celine jeans, a Bottega Veneta Gemelli Medium Bag ($4100), and Alaïa Mesh and Patent-Leather Ballet Flats ($1024). That’s certainly a lot of luxury brands, but the overall look is something you can easily re-create on a non-designer budget. Scroll down to see what Dua Lipa wears for a date with Callum Turner and shop the look for yourself.

In case you missed it, the 81st annual Golden Globes took place last night in Los Angeles. There were many notable beauty looks, but it should come as no surprise that Margot Robbie was among them. The actress paired her hot-pink custom Armani Privé dress with a glowing complexion and glossy hair. In my opinion, the look was complete and utter perfection—especially when you consider the underrated (and fairly unnoticed) element that took her Barbie commitment to a whole new level…I’m talking about her barely-there manicure.

Nail Artist Betina Goldstein created a nude manicure that matched Robbie’s skin tone perfectly. Usually, nail experts recommend choosing a nude nail polish that’s one shade lighter or darker than your skin tone for contrast, but Goldstein opted for an exact match..and for good reason. Goldstein posted a picture of Robbie’s nails on her Instagram page, explaining, “For Margot’s nails, I wanted them to blend in with her skin to create the illusion of Barbie doll hands.”

  • 9 Major Trends That Will Define Fall/Winter Fashion

9 Major Trends That Will Define Fall/Winter Fashion

    [ad_1]

It took a while—and over 1000 runway images—to finally wrap our heads around the contents of fashion month. For the first time in a long time, the runways this fall/winter season had an almost tangible air of newness to them, with a handful of designer debuts—including Daniel Lee at Burberry and Ludovic de Saint Sernin at Ann Demeulemeester—and a number of veterans successfully refreshing their brands in the eyes of the fashion community. Most substantial, though, were the trends presented by these designers and so many more, who managed to deliver some of the most unexpected groupings we’ve seen in ages that somehow still fit within the current zeitgeist.

Tory Burch, Miuccia Prada for Prada and Miu Miu, Anthony Vaccarello for Saint Laurent, and Matthieu Blazy for Bottega Veneta all seemed to grasp what so many have tried and failed to in the past—that is, what women actually wear. In a relatable move, Prada sent models down the runway at Miu Miu looking intentionally frazzled, having remembered to wear stockings and outerwear but forgotten pants and a hairbrush.

Elsewhere, Vaccarello’s Saint Laurent collection displayed a contrasting glimpse of the female form, one that’s strict in its put-togetherness, utilizing intensely strong tailoring and powerful silhouettes to get his message across. Finally, at Loewe, Ferragamo, and Jil Sander, our desire for comfort played out in the form of furry footwear, fashionable security blankets, and apparel fitted with oversize hoods.

Determine which of the above fits your current mindset by scrolling through the nine trends from the fall/winter 2023 runways below.

  • Chanel's “Vamp” Might Be The Most Sought-After Nail Polish in History—12 Dupes

Chanel's “Vamp” Might Be The Most Sought-After Nail Polish in History—12 Dupes

    [ad_1]

Myths can be a big part of a beauty brand’s DNA. Some of the most iconic beauty products are linked to an epic origin story. Take Benefit Cosmetics Benetint Lip & Cheek Stain, initially made as a nipple tint for exotic dancers, or how La Mer was invented after its founder suffered burns in a lab accident. (He also consulted astrology and played a specific soundtrack for each batch.) Then there’s Chanel’s Vamp, aka Rouge Noir, a whole other ballgame. The dark, blood-red, almost-black shade was everything in the mid-90s and hard to come by as it was constantly selling out. (Thankfully, there were tons of dupes for teens like me who didn’t have a Chanel-friendly budget.) Almost 30 years later, Vamp remains one of Chanel’s best-selling nail polish shades.

Vamp first debuted in March 1994 at Chanel’s Fall 1994 ready-to-wear show in Paris (an iconic collection that featured gold-chain, cell phone, and water bottle holders, which would later inspire Mona May’s costume design in Clueless). Vamp’s legacy includes a Chanel makeup artist coloring over a red nail with a Sharpie; another has Uma Thurman wearing the shade in Pulp Fiction. Though, neither seems to be true.

Two days before the Chanel show, the company’s director of the house’s makeup-creation studio, Heidi Morawetz, and Dominique Moncourtois, the international director of makeup creation, mixed red and black pigments in Chanel’s studio kitchen until they came up with the color. Morawetz told Interview magazine in 2011 that she was inspired by how eyes and nails look black in black-and-white photos. When editors peeped at the models’ gothic nails, it became an instant hit. “The journalists saw it in the show, and they thought it was incredible, “What’s this color?” The Americans did it right away because they could just put it on the counter. So it came out in America before it did here in Paris,” recalled Morawetz.

If Chanel Is Your Goal Aesthetic, Try These 10 Affordable Brands

    [ad_1]

Ask anyone with an eye for fashion to name their favorite brands, and as they list everyone from Reformation to Jean Paul Gaultier, they’ll find a way to slip Chanel in there. The brand speaks a secret language in which we’re all trying to become fluent. As it’s known for strategic stylistic choices like tweed and color-blocking, many of the brand’s designs are instantly recognizable. I recently met a woman wearing a Chanel tweed jacket that was so effortlessly pinned off the shoulders that I fell madly in love with her ensemble and could barely maintain eye contact. The brand’s clothing speaks for itself.

In my dream world, I’d wear nothing but Chanel. However, we’ve got to be realistic. I’m still in my 20s and working on building out my savings account before I get into the habit of seriously splurging on designers. So in the meantime, I’ll be shopping these 10 brands to get the Chanel look.

7 Winter Outfit Ideas Inspired By the Chanel Runways

    [ad_1]

Getting the opportunity to wear a head-to-toe Chanel outfit is a luxury that few of us will ever know, but the beauty of fashion is that it doesn’t live in a vacuum. We all get to witness a collection as soon as it comes down a runway, and that collection will inevitably affect what we wear for that season—and sometimes even years to come.

It goes without saying that the Chanel runways are very influential. And while the prices of the collections may not be all that accessible, some of the outfit ideas actually are. I gladly took another long, hard look at the F/W 23 Chanel collection since it’s been a long eight months since it made its debut. Within the collection you’ll find lots of Chanel’s signature tweed, as well as a mix of other textures ranging from satin to velvet to lace to leather. If you’re looking for cool, quirky ways to style your winter sweaters, you’ve come to the right place. The looks I chose to draw winter outfit ideas from for this story are simple and elegant, and you may even already own pieces similar to those they’re made up of.

Scroll on for some wintery Chanel eye candy and to shop seven chic outfits that are inspired by the sumptuous F/W 23 looks.

From Celine to Chanel, These 25 Designer Hair Accessories Are Destined for Fame

    [ad_1]

POV: It’s September 2007, and the premiere of a teen-led television drama chronicling the lives of Manhattan’s elite, Gossip Girl, has just sparked a renewed interest in hair accessories. While it would be fair to argue that fictional Park Avenue princess Blair Waldorf may not have been the sole reason headbands spiked in popularity, her signature hair accessory is by far one of the most recognizable symbols of the series.

By wearing her headbands (of which, she had many), our beloved Queen B might as well have been unofficially sporting a crown while ruling the Upper East Side with an iron fist. Despite my not having experienced the series at its peak (I wasn’t even in middle school when the show first aired), my introduction to the show came with an adoration for its fashion. Suddenly, my closet was flooded with headbands, scarves, clips, and more as my own personal ode to classic prep style.

  • Fashion People Shared Their Best Designer Buys of 2023—Here’s What Made the Cut

Fashion People Shared Their Best Designer Buys of 2023—Here’s What Made the Cut

    [ad_1]

WHO: Eliza Huber, Fashion Editor, Who What Wear

How would you describe your personal style? How, if at all, has it evolved over the last year?

You know, it’s funny because generally, I wouldn’t say that my style has changed very much over the last year, but then I go back and look at photos from this time in 2022, and I’m shocked at some of the combinations I put together. It’s not so much the items as I like to keep my wardrobe pretty classic and timeless, but more just how they’re styled. Perhaps they’re a bit louder than I’d go for now. I’ve always felt the most comfortable with more of a minimal look, maybe with one or two accessories that make an outfit feel special, so I’m very happy about the fade of maximalism. Bright colors and loud patterns have never appealed to me, so when those things were “in,” I do feel like I made compromises to my personal style a bit that I’m happy to feel no longer the pressure to make. If anything, this year, I think I’ve just learned more about myself and what I like, which makes getting dressed a lot easier, and every outfit feels more like me.

What is the best designer item you’ve invested in 2023? Why do you love this item?

While in Milan for work earlier this year, I bought the Bottega Veneta Sardine bag from Matthieu Blazy’s F/W 22 collection after months of ogling over it. The shape is so interesting and artistic but, at the same time, very wearable. I went into the store, tried it on in all different sizes and colors, and then came back the next day without a single ounce of hesitation about buying the small size in Fondant, the brand’s signature dark brown shade. I didn’t have any handbags in color at the time, so it felt like something that would fill a void in my wardrobe, and it has. In addition to my bag earlier this year, I splurged on a tailored peplum and matching skirt from Tory Burch. In the months since, I’ve worn it countless times and gotten so many compliments on it, two things that contribute to my not feeling a single ounce of regret about the rather large investment.

All I Need to Copy Blake Lively’s Chic Fall Uniform Is This Under-$150 Cardigan

    [ad_1]

Maybe it’s just my imagination, but I feel like the minute that fall weather comes back around in New York City, Blake Lively and Taylor Swift turn on, getting photographed together all the time in effortless autumnal looks that I always want to copy for the entirety of the season. And this year is hardly an exception. In the last few weeks, we’ve seen tons of the two best friends, and just as they always do, both have been showing up in outfits worthy of pressing Control + C on.

Their latest sighting came when the duo was photographed leaving Bradley Cooper’s apartment on Thursday, with Lively and Swift going their separate ways afterward. It was at that moment of separation that I noticed just how good the Gossip Girl actress’s chunky cardigan was—and just how much I needed one for my own wardrobe. Specifically, she wore an oat-colored, shawl-neck cardigan sweater with a matching tee, baggy jeans, UGG slippers from the brand’s collaboration with Opening Ceremony, and a denim Chanel flap bag.

Though I’ve unfortunately been unable to ID her exact knit—I get the feeling that it was stolen from Ryan Reynolds’s side of the closet—I did find a $140 Banana Republic alt that’ll more than get the job done. Shop it and more fall cardigans below.
