  • Hating Zach Braff and Florence Pugh’s Relationship Is Sexist

Hating Zach Braff and Florence Pugh’s Relationship Is Sexist

    [ad_1]

Florence Pugh has recently been the subject of much media buzz thanks to the age gap between her and her partner, Zach Braff.

Pugh, who is 24-years-old, has been dating Scrubs star Zach Braff, who just turned 45, for nearly four years. As Pugh’s star has risen thanks to hit films like Little Women and Midsommar, media and fans alike have begun to question Braff and Pugh’s age gap. Finally, tired of all the abuse, Pugh posted the following video to her Instagram account on April 9th. Watch the video here.

In the video, she firmly warns fans against commenting about her relationship on her posts. “I will not allow that behaviour on my page. I’m not about that. It makes me upset and sad that during this time when we really all need to be together and supporting and loving one another… a few of you decided to bully for no reason,” the star said candidly. She goes on to say that she has been working and earning money since the age of 17 and paying taxes from the age of 18 and can make her own decisions when it comes to relationships.

“I’ll underline this fact,’ Pugh said. “I do not need you to tell me who I should and should not love and I would never in my life who they can and cannot love. It is not your place and really it has nothing to do with you. I don’t want this on my page, it’s embarrassing, it’s sad and I don’t know when cyberbullying became trendy or a points system. I don’t know why it’s a cool thing.”

More recently, in an interview for Elle UK, the actress spoke out about the online abuse again, saying “I know that part of being in the spotlight is that people might invade your privacy and have opinions on it, but it’s bizarre that normal folk are allowed to display such hate and opinions on a part of my life that I’m not putting out there,” she said. “It’s a strange side of fame that you’re allowed to be torn apart by thousands of people even though you didn’t put that piece of you out there.” She went on to say, “I don’t want to talk about it because it’s not something I want to highlight, but my point to all this is that isn’t it odd that a stranger can totally tear apart someone’s relationship and it’s allowed?”

While Pugh’s rebuff of cyberbullies was inspiring, the question still remains: Why do people have such an issue with Pugh and Braff’s relationship? Older male celebrities dating younger women is a tale as old as time. Think of Leonardo DiCaprio, known for dating women as much 20 years his junior, or Dennis Quaid (65) and girlfriend Laura Savoie (26). These couples don’t receive the kind of abuse Braff and Pugh have weathered, so what sets them apart? Perhaps the answer lies with Pugh’s fame. She is unquestionably the bigger star in the couple, so maybe fans’ image of who a beautiful young star should date isn’t compatible with Braff, who is cute in a non-threatening way and in no way the traditional Hollywood heart throb.

But then why don’t people have issues with Leonardo Dicaprio dating little-known models and actresses? Well, sexism, of course. We expect a big star like Leo to date young beautiful women, and we have no issue with the age gap because we don’t feel like we know the women in the relationship; they’re just unknown, beautiful faces. Not only that, but we expect famous women to date men who are even more famous than them, in order to increase their own star power. Meanwhile, famous men can exist in their own orbit of stardom and date who they choose.

We expect young female starlets like Pugh to date hunky heartthrobs while she’s in her prime, before she ages out of the narrow window in which women are valued in Hollywood. It makes us uncomfortable that Pugh is dating an older man who is not a massive star and not sexy in a traditional way, because it doesn’t fit with the narrative we’ve come to expect from the people we choose to bestow fame upon.

Our response to Pugh’s relationship also reflects the way society views a woman’s personal autonomy. When Ashton Kutcher was dating much older Demi Moore, no one questioned his decision-making. But people seem to think that Pugh needs to be warned against making a mistake in dating Braff, that she isn’t capable of making her own relationship choices. Why? You guessed it: sexism. Culturally, we don’t trust women to make decisions in the same way we trust men. Not only that, but in the case of Leo and his semi-anonymous young lovers, in our eyes, the women in the relationship don’t possess the kind of personal autonomy Pugh does; we don’t know them, they’re just pieces of eye candy. Pugh, on the other hand, has become a human being in our eyes, something that isn’t automatic when we perceive women the way it is for men. But that doesn’t mean she’s free from the unfair expectations we place on all women, famous or not.

On some level, we feel that Florence Pugh owes us a sexy, tumultuous relationship with some hot young Hollywood star. We feel that since we have decided to make her famous, to watch her movies and invest in her personal life, it is her duty to entertain us. Having a stable relationship with a 45-year-old nice-guy who doesn’t have a six pack and is known for a funny sitcom—not hit action movies—isn’t entertaining. That isn’t what we want to read about in the tabloids.

So, summarily, while you may think that it’s anti-feminist that Pugh is dating a much older man, and you may think that commenting on her relationship is in some way proving your devotion to her, you couldn’t be more wrong. If you have a problem with Pugh dating Braff, you’re essentially saying that she can’t be trusted to make her own choices, and you’re making her relationship about you and your own prejudice, not her and her happiness.

Just let Florence Pugh and Zach Braff be happy, okay?

Man Dressed as Gandalf Bumps Into the Real Ian McKellan

A wizard is never late. He arrives precisely when he means to.

Or it might just have just been an extremely lucky coincidence. Either way, a young man dressed as Gandalf was in the right place at the right time during a Bristol pub crawl. The 22-year-old man was celebrating his birthday with some of his friends when one of them spotted none other than Sir Ian McKellen — The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies’ Gandalf — himself.

He spoke with The Bristol Post to explain exactly how things went down.

“So, it was really bizarre, it was my 22nd birthday, and we were on a pub crawl. Me and all my mates were walking down the street and I heard behind me ‘do you want to meet the real Gandalf?’. I didn’t recognise him immediately then I was like ‘OH MY GOD IT’S SIR IAN MCKELLEN!

READ MORE: Warner Bros. Plans New Series of Lord of the Rings Movies

McKellen was out touring for a production of Mother Goose and just so happened to be out and about on Bristol’s Corn Street that evening.

Everybody said ‘what on earth is going on?!’ He asked me how old I was and said ‘happy birthday’ and shook my hand. I was flabbergasted, I had no idea what to do or say. We had zero idea that he was walking down that street. If I was 10 to 20 metres ahead of him it wouldn’t have happened, the planets aligned. He’s a really lovely sound bloke, an excellent guy, nice, down to earth and humble and I’d like to buy him a drink.

Luckily for everyone, one of the gentleman’s friends was able to capture the whole exchange on video.

They’re the NYC ladies who munchie!

A gaggle of Gotham’s most accomplished gals proved you can have a good time on Valentine’s Day with pals, when TV newswoman Judy Licht hosted her 43rd annual Valentine’s Day lunch.

The tradition was started as a way “to celebrate my girlfriends on this holiday, because the men in our lives may come and go — but girlfriends are mostly forever.”

Licht launched the Galentine’s lunch the year she separated from husband No. 1. She subsequently married famed ad man and restaurateur Jerry Della Femina in 1983.

Among the powerhouse women in attendance this year at Licht’s Upper East Side townhouse was Martha Stewart, 81 — who brought heart-shaped Valentine’s boxes for everyone filled with “feel good” CBD gummies, we hear.

  • The Wrath of Woman: Miley Cyrus and Shakira

The Wrath of Woman: Miley Cyrus and Shakira

    [ad_1]

When Angela Bassett set the car on fire in Waiting to Exhale. When Aubrey Plaza spirals for a full episode after finding the condom wrapper in White Lotus. When Rosamund Pike fakes her death, frames her husband — Ben Affleck — for murder, and disappears completely after discovering his affair with EmRata in Gone Girl. Chefs kiss to all of it. Because one thing about me? I love the wrath of women.

While I don’t support the scorning of women, I support the actions of scorned women. Just like Lady Gaga said on the House of Gucci’s red carpet, “I don’t believe in the glorification of murder. I do believe in the empowerment of women.”

And recently, both Shakira and Miley Cyrus metaphorically murdered their cheating partners — Gerard Piqué and Liam Hemsworth respectively — by skewering them with the spikes of hit break-up anthems.

It’s the Taylor Swift treatment. Immortalizing a man in song — in the worst way possible … for him. Jake Gyllenhall and John Mayer are probably texting Piqué and Hemsworth words of support. They’ll need it.

In case you missed it, here’s a quick rundown on current breakup anthems on the charts that are bringing back girl power.

The backstory behind Miley Cyrus’s “Flowers”

Miley Cyrus is no stranger to penning songs about Liam Hemsworth. After being married for only one year, Cyrus and Hemsworth divorced in February 2020. However, their tortured romance has been making headlines since 2010. That means Liam Hemsworth wasted this woman’s time for an entire decade. No wonder she’s pissed.

Ever since they fell in love on the set of The Last Song, Miley’s been dedicating absolute bangers to her on-again-off-again partner. The movie’s breakout track, “When I Look At You,” should have netted her a slew of awards. A snub I shall never-ever get over. But since then, there have been many others: “Wrecking Ball,” “Malibu,” and even one named “I Would Die For You.”

But the instantly viral hit “Flowers” has special significance. The single is the first release from the former-Disney star’s upcoming album, Endless Summer Vacation. But this single was released on January 13th — little Liam’s 33rd birthday. It seems Miley is in her petty era. And we love it for her.

Even the lyrics of the song allegedly dig at her former relationship. “I can buy myself flowers,” Miley sings, “I can hold my own hand.” This assertion of self-love is a direct response to Bruno Mas’ “When I Was Your Man.” Why? Well, apparently Liam dedicated this song to Cyrus at their wedding. Odd, because it is a breakup song. Foreshadowing, maybe? At least we now get a breakup banger out of it.

The video is also sure to go down in music video history. Its vintage fashion looks were instantly striking, but when fans looked closer, they sussed out the deeper meaning of the video’s captivating narrative. First off, the video contains multiple references to Patrick Bateman in American Psycho. Classic and unhinged.

But that’s not all! Turns out, it was filmed in the very house where Hemsworth allegedly cheated on Cyrus… with multiple women… multiple times! And there she is, reclaiming her space and her time. As she should!

The backstory behind Shakira’s “Out of Your League”

One other woman-scorned dominating the news? None other than the ever-iconic Shakira. The Columbian singer shattered YouTube records for the most streamed Latin music song in 24-hours. The track, “Out Of Your League,” is an unapologetic rant to her former partner Gerard Piqué. Astoundingly, it’s logged 63m+ YouTube views in 24-hours, making it the most-watched new Latin song in the platform’s history.

And the story behind this song? More infidelity, unfortunately.

Rumor has it, Shakira realized her former partner was cheating on her after returning home to find that her jar of jam had been eaten. And, supposedly, Piqué has never tasted jam in his life. Shakira playing detective and ending up with a hit song? I’m obsessed.

This story is so crazy it just has to be true. It’s 2023’s equivalent of the Harry Styles x Olivia Wilde x Jason Sudeikis salad dressing debacle of 2022. More celeb relationship drama with food involved, please!

The song is pretty much a diss track. And like all fine diss tracks, it’s filled with savage jabs and no pulled punches. Shakira — 45 — sings: “I’m worth two 22-year-olds,” referencing her ex’s quick rebound with a 22-year-old. She sings: “You swapped a Ferrari for a Twingo/You swapped a Rolex for a Casio.”

The title is also a play on Piqué’s profession. As a soccer player, he’s familiar with leagues. But Shakira is definitely far beyond his.“I was out of your league,” she says, “which is why you’re with someone just like you.”

None of this was on my 2023 BINGO card. But I’m living for the drama, supporting women, and playing these songs on repeat.

  • What’s With Justin Bieber’s Pimple Patches?

What’s With Justin Bieber’s Pimple Patches?

    [ad_1]

There’s a lot to say about Hailey Bieber. In fact, we’ve said it. TikTok’s beauty guru, founder of Rhode, and one of fashion’s favorite cool girls, Hailey is Gen Z’s muse. 2022 was the Year-of-Hailey — she even has a Forbes 30 Under 30 cover to prove it.

What’s most impressive is that Hailey, a nepo baby who’s been in the spotlight for eons, hasn’t shriveled under the weight of her married name. Somehow, she’s managed not only to maintain her individual identity while married to Justin Bieber — one of the biggest pop stars on the planet — but launch her name into the stratosphere.

In fact, the jumbotron at a 2022 hockey game went so far as to describe Justin Bieber as “Hailey Bieber’s husband.” Call it a masterclass in true love, branding, or the divine feminine? But sometimes Justin seems like just one more of Hailey’s glittering accessories. We’ve all seen the paparazzi shots of Justin playing the perfect Instagram boyfriend by snapping her social media photos. And then there are all those paparazzi shots of her epic street style, in which Justin is a constant in the background wearing the most unhinged outfit imaginable.

These days, JB’s fits are more chaotic that ever — if you can believe it. The Drew House founder is still rocking his classic oversized silhouettes. But lately, he’s been accessorizing with pimple patches. Yes, pimple patches.

Hailey’s known for her skincare brand, Rhode. But even before launching the cult-favorite line, her personal skincare routine caused thousands of skincare products to go viral. From Tower28’s facial spray to Kosas concealer, whatever Hailey uses, we buy. And we’re not the only ones. A woman with as much influence as Regina George herself, Hailey started wearing Starface pimple patches, so Justin started wearing Starface pimple patches.

Thanks to what I’m assuming is Hailey’s influence, Bieber cannot stop sporting those damn pimple patches. Men: take notes. A skincare ‘routine’ that consists of washing your face with bar soap and nothing else will no longer do.

JB gets facials and wears pimple patches. We should all aspire to that level of skincare maintenance.

I, for one, am carrying this energy into 2023. It’s shameless, it’s a statement, it’s Starface. And while I can’t relate to most of Bieber’s life, a shared love for these $11 pimple patches is the one precious thing we have in common.

Many celebs and beauty brands try to market an image of perfection, but JB has been known to own up to his imperfections and inherent chaotic nature. Starface is on a mission to drive the beauty industry to do the same. The brand identifies as acne-positive. It’s similar to body positivity in that it promotes accepting yourself at every stage, despite beauty norms. Don’t be ashamed of your breakouts — everyone gets them.

And frankly, I think wearing pimple patches is a flex. It shows you don’t care too much about what people think and that you put your skincare first. It’s a win-win. So rather than aggravating your breakouts by covering them with makeup or trying to pop them, try a pimple patch for every need.

In the words of Hailey Bieber: “take your skincare seriously, but not yourself.”

So, go forth, and pimple patch. Whether you’re a Starface stan or use another brand of choice, don’t be afraid to take them out on the town.

I’ve been a fan of pimple patches for years, so here are my picks for you to wear shamelessly whenever the need arises:

All products featured are independently selected by our editors. Things you buy through our links may earn us a commission.

    Starface Black Star

There’s a reason this is Bieber’s brand of choice. While Starface has branched out into cleansers and masks, so I’ll never get bored with their classic patches. Shrink spots fast with these fun, star-shaped skin stickers. Lately Bieber’s been rocking the Black Star. The 100% hydrocolloid patches have been clinically proven to absorb fluid and help reduce the appearance of inflammation to shrink spots overnight. Time to join Justin and partake in the fun. Trust me (and JB), try them.

    Zitsticka Hyperfade Patches

Zitsticka has a range of patches for every need. These standout Hyperfade patches lighten and brighten the appearance of dark spots and hyperpigmentation. They utilize self-dissolving micro darts that melt within 2 hours of application, releasing regenerative, brightening ingredients. Try them to see more even skin in two weeks or less.

    CorsX

CorsX patches are K-Beauty favorites that have been a staple for years and years. They absorb oils and extract impurities while creating a barrier to protect against outside irritants — so it’s like they’re made to be worn outside. The classics truly are the best.

  • In a Cheeky New Jimmy Kimmel Skit, the Princes Have Hands

In a Cheeky New Jimmy Kimmel Skit, the Princes Have Hands

    [ad_1]

Prince Harry’s forthcoming memoir, Spare, was accidentally leaked a week early in Spain. The highly-anticipated, secret-spilling, 416-page tome promised to be a revealing portrait of the Duke of Sussex’s life. And according to the Spanish translations which have dominated the current global news cycle, it delivers.

The memoir, officially set to be released on January 10th, spills all the tea:

    • His wild experimentation with drugs from his teenage years to adulthood
    • His unrequited crush on former Friends star Courtney Cox
    • His strained relationship with his daddy, King Charles
    • How it was his brother who encouraged him to wear that Halloween costume
    • His shocking time in the army (including the number of people he killed)
    • And, most compellingly, his gradual falling out with said brother, the royal golden-boy, Prince William

The most talked about and memed passage in the book (so far) details a scuffle between the Dukes of Sussex and Cambridge over Harry’s relationship with Meghan Markle, the now-Dutchess of Sussex. William had been vociferously against their marriage, and they actually had a knock-down-drag-out fracas in Nottingham Cottage that ended with broken crockery and Harry’s bum in a dog bowl. Such outrage is detailed in his memoir.

Obviously, the internet had a field day with this alleged altercation. The best take on the fight was a reenactment on Thursday, January 5th’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! In this hilarious skit, two actors dressed as the rock legend Prince go at it in a spoof of the Harry and William brawl.

Watch the Jimmy Kimmel Live! Prince Harry and Prince William fight skit here:

The brilliant premise has the two princes played by a pair of actors each dressed as Prince to reenact the fight without getting into too much trouble.

Meanwhile, a voiceover reads from the memoir as the actors perform a word-for-word version of the events. To signify Nottingham Cottage, a sign reads “Nott Cott.” The wordplay is subtle, yet uproarious.

The most riotous moment happens when Harry describes the dog bowl breaking beneath him — which is far funnier when played by the two actors in flamboyant wigs and Prince’s superstar get-up.

The skit is already viral and is sure to rack up sales in anticipation to the memoir’s actual release date. All I can say is, this fight better be the inspiration for Ryan Murphy’s next season of Feud. And godspeed to the writers of the coming seasons of The Crown.

For now, you should order the book to read even more drama and sordid details about the royal Prince.

Preorder Spare to get the rest of the juicy gossip firsthand.

  • Hailey Bieber’s Nepo Baby Tee: You Either Love It Or You Hate It

Hailey Bieber’s Nepo Baby Tee: You Either Love It Or You Hate It

    [ad_1]

As if I couldn’t love Hailey Bieber more, she goes and gets even more iconic. Hailey Bieber just appeared in an instantly viral outfit: jeans, loafers, and a white tee that’s completely blank except for the words “nepo baby.”

Known for her Gen-Z-adored street style, this is not the first time Bieber has had an outfit go viral. This one, however, is viral not for its trendy brands or expert styling. But for the subtle — yet potent — phrase “nepo baby” proudly displayed on her chest.

The nepo baby discourse has been simmering since the term caught the world’s attention on TikTok, but it skyrocketed in December after a New York Magazine cover article mapped out a web of all the most famous nepotism babies and their preeminent parents/family members.

In the ensuing month, many nepo babies have come under fire for disputing the allegations. Tweets, Notes-app statements, and interview clips have been flying around from these famous people’s kids desperately trying to dodge the claims that their privilege discredits their fame.

Most stars had the good sense to shut up and keep it pushing. Initially, Hailey Rhode Baldwin-Bieber was guilty of being one of those. But now she’s finally responded in a move that’s bound for the Fashion Hall of Fame.

    @homohoney0

meanwhile the other nepotism baby girls are hootin and hollering about their privilege like be quiet tiffany!!! #haileybieber #haileybaldwin #haileybieberstyle

Now that her surname is Bieber — is “nepo wife” a moniker? Or do we just call that a Real House Wives star? Her famous husband is not the original source of her fame. Nee Baldwin, her maiden name comes from her father Stephen Baldwin a popular American actor. You’ll also recognize her famous uncles: Alec Baldwin, Daniel Baldwin, and William Baldwin. But that’s not where the fame-genes end! Bieber’s maternal grandfather is the Brazilian pianist and arranger Eumir Deodato, who worked with musical legends from Frank Sinatra to Björk.

Suffice it to say: Bieber is genuine Hollywood royalty. And unlike many celebrities in similar positions — whose responses to the discourse were cringe-worthy — at least Bieber owns it.

This move is reminiscent of 90s nepo babies Liv Tyler and Stella McCartney showing up at a Met Gala in Hanes T-Shirts that read “Rock Royalty.” Self-aware. Badass. Iconic.

Bieber is part of one of the most well-known friend groups in. The. World. From Jenners to Hadids, she’s surrounded by fellow nepo babies, but she’s never had to qualify her success. Unlike her peers, she’s never come under fire for making light of her superstar circle.

Perhaps this is because she’s miraculously managed to make her own name over the last few years. Baldwin and Bieber are powerful names. But now, so are Hailey and Rhode. The model used her clout to become a Gen Z favorite beauty guru and then plastered her middle name all over the internet with her eponymous brand: Rhode Skin.

You can toss around the term Nepo Baby all you want. It doesn’t scare Hailey. Why would it? Other nepo babies have strived to reach her level of influence and failed. And none of them could pull off anything this instantly notorious.

Hugh Jackman Says Incidents on Bryan Singer’s ‘X-Men’ Set Would ‘Not Happen Now’

    [ad_1]

Bryan Singer, the director of the X-Men trilogy, recently came under fire for his on-set behavior and now one of his most famous stars, X-Men mainstay Hugh Jackman, spoke about his experience with the director. While the X-Men trilogy Singer directed may have paved the way for superhero movies going into the next decade, his methods may have been less than savory.

As early as 1997, Singer has been the subject of a number of allegations and lawsuits. In 2014, a new crop of allegations surfaced. Singer was eventually relieved of his duties as the director of Bohemian Rhapsody after more allegations began to emerge. He has not directed a film since then.

Jackman, who of course portrayed Wolverine in Singer’s X-Men films, recently spoke with The Guardian. When asked about his experience on the set, including if the director’s subsequent issues and the allegations against him have changed his perspective on the films, he shared the following:

You know, that’s a really, really complicated question, there’s certainly questions to be asked and I think they should be asked. But I guess I don’t know how to elegantly answer that … I think it’s complex and ultimately I look back with pride at what we’ve achieved and what momentum that started.

Jackman added “There are some stories, you know … I think there are some ways of being on set that would not happen now. And I think that things have changed for the better. There’s way less tolerance for disrespectful, marginalizing, bullying, any oppressive behavior. There’s zero tolerance for it now and people will speak out, and I think that’s great.”

Jackman is currently preparing for his return to the X-Men in 2024’s Deadpool 3.

  • Your Favorite Celebs Read Boring Books

Your Favorite Celebs Read Boring Books

    [ad_1]

Your favorite celebrity has it all: beauty, talent … and brains? In most cases, just like in real life, two out of three will have to do. But some celebs just need you to know there’s something going on up there in those pretty little heads. Performative intellectuality — we all do it. Celebrities just do it more obnoxiously.

It’s DiCaprio’s commitment to climate change. It’s Jaden Smith’s fervor for conversations about the political and economic state of the world. It’s Emma Watson’s stint at Brown. And it’s every time your favorite star posts an Instagram story featuring an open book.

A person’s “favorite” book can reveal far more about them than they ever will. And as we stare at our screens — hoarding all the info that Deuxmoi provides about the stars we stan — a simple book rec feels like we’ve hit a gold mine. For example, if anyone recommends Eckhart Tolle’s The Power of Now, it’s time to log off. Same with Infinite Jest.

I’m begging him to stopvia Instagram @ncentineo

During quarantine, we were bombarded with book recs. With nothing to do but wallow about their mansions while we plebes reckoned with the looming financial crisis buoyed only by skimpy stimulus checks, superstars were lounging poolside. But they were hardly wasting away. They were reading.

Scrolling through Instagram stories, there was a constant flash of popular titles across my phone screen. And for a brief moment in June 2020, I couldn’t escape posts focused bell hook’s All About Love or Robin DiAngelo’s White Fragility. Great picks, don’t get me wrong. But the spines looked suspiciously uncracked to me … and that’s all I’ll say about that.

I get it, though! It’s tough to carve out time for reading. And when you do, how can you tell what’s worth reading. In the age of BookTok, so many vile books blow up. Who can blame someone for falling victim to a bad rec? Or for proudly proclaiming their love of a vacuous bestseller, imagining that they appear unique. Cringe.

As someone who has used a few cliched books to embellish my personality in the past, I refuse to throw the first stone. But if I want to know what to read next, I know where not to turn — Noah Centineo, I’m looking at you.

Yet, beyond the performative intellect, there is hope. Some of our faves really are as introspective and complex as our fantasies make them out to be. They read books — good ones! They appreciate poems — good ones! And they have impeccable taste.

Here are some celebs with great taste and books you must — simply must — add to your TBR:

    Noname

Rapper and activist Noname is one of the most avid readers in the music industry. She started Noname Book Club, an online/irl community dedicated to uplifting POC voices by highlighting two books each month written by authors of color. In addition to building community with folks across the country, they also send monthly book picks to incarcerated comrades through their Prison Program.

Some of the bookclub’s past picks include:

    Reese Witherspoon

Yes, I said Reese Witherspoon. Her bookclub picks lead to instant popularity — some of which have been adapted by her production company, Hello Sunshine.

The People’s Princess has already recommended 50+ books, including:

    Tessa Thompson

Tessa Thompson’s latest project — Viva Maude — is another actress-led production company. When she’s not playing a Marvel Superhero, she’s turning the pages. Luckily for us, her passion for diverse stories will soon mean fantastic movies for us all to enjoy.

    Some of Tessa’s reads:

    Kaia Gerber

Another celeb with a bookclub is Kaia Gerber — actress, model, and one of my personal favorite nepo babies. Her Instagram-based bookclub flourished during the pandemic, because she invited authors to her Instagram Live show and chat with her millions of followers.

Some of her top picks include:

    Emily Ratajkowski

The model turned authoress Emily Ratajkowski recently penned her very own book of essays. All to compliment her own vast reading list — and she has some brilliant picks.

As an activist and writer, she has a diverse range of titles under her belt including:

    Harry Styles

Yes, Harry Styles reads too! Harry’s the epitome of the modern man. “A man written by women” — as the internet named his rare breed. So, of course there’s gonna be some strong book recs here. A newbie reading convert, Harry freely confesses that many were recommended to him by the women in his life. Ladies, thank you for your service. His catchy pop hit “Watermelon Sugar” was inspired by Richard Brautigan’s In Watermelon Sugar.

What’s Going on With Selena Gomez?

    [ad_1]

Selena Gomez is one of the most famous people on the planet. The former Disney star is a singer, actress, and entrepreneur. She’s also a mental health advocate and star of her own, new documentary My Mind & Me.

The new Apple+ Documentary My Mind & Me offers unprecedented insight into her life. It focuses particular attention on the past few years as she dealt with fame, relationships, and a recent bipolar diagnosis.

Gomez reveals all about her bipolar disorder, her mental health journey, and the lessons she’s learned along the way. My Mind & Me shines light into Gomez’s vulnerability and provides insights into the private life of one of the industry’s most beloved female talents. If you haven’t fallen in love with Selena before, you will now.

And with a new documentary, of course, comes a press tour.

Selena’s been making headlines and breaking the internet over the past few months as she promotes her documentary. She’s telling all, making statements at events, and working on her other ventures all at the same time.

So if you haven’t been able to keep up, I get it. Here’s the ultimate guide to what’s been going on with
    Selegend:

Only Murders in the Building – Season 2

While millions have been watching Selena Gomez on our screens since she was a teenager, a whole new demographic was exposed to her talents with the hit Hulu show, Only Murders in the Building. The Emmy-nominated show stars Selena alongside comedy veterans Martin Short and Steve Martin. The result: a charming, addictive comedy that totally legitimized Selena’s already-massive career.

Only Murders in the Building Season 1 Trailer | Rotten Tomatoes TV

    youtu.be

Season 2 of the fan-favorite dropped at the end of summer, garnering a coveted 99% score on Rotten Tomatoes. And the show has only helped Gomez grow as an actor. “I’m always hoping that I can keep up with them,” she told Vanity Fair about her co-stars. “What I’ve learned is to be more snarky with my jokes.”

It makes sense that an ex-Disney star is not used to edgy acting. But she hasn’t forgotten her Disney roots — for better or for worse.

Selena Gomez could have been the lead in Camp Rock instead of Demi Lovato?

Some shocking Disney tea recently resurfaced: Selena was almost the lead in the Camp Rock franchise.

David DeLuise — he played Gomez’s father in the Disney series Wizards of Waverly Place — revealed that the role of Mitchie Torres was originally offered to Selena. Can you imagine? Selena — who dated Nick Jonas rather than the movie’s romantic lead Joe Jonas — as the star in this blockbuster movie series?

But that never came to pass, partly due to altruism on Selena’s part. While Disney stars were often pitted against each other, Selena allegedly turned down the role to let Demi Lovato take the lead. And honestly, I’m kind of glad she did. I mean, Selena’s songs are sometimes bangers. But Demi is the one with the pipes.

In hindsight, the Disney machine seems way more toxic than it did in its heyday. The pressure for those young actors to churn out content — from TV shows to movies to albums — must have felt insurmountable. And while Selena largely avoided the messy ex-Disney star arc, it negatively affected her identity, her sense of self, and her mental health. All of which she talks about in her new documentary, My Mind & Me.

Selena is ready to put her past behind her

My Mind & Me isn’t merely a sensationalized, titillating tale of a former Disney star. In fact, it’s an effort to put her Disney career behind her. Another thing she wants in her rearview mirror: her relationship with Justin Bieber.

“When am I gonna be good enough by myself?” She tearfully asks in a 2016 clip, recounting a conversation with Interscope Records CEO John Janick about her music career. “I don’t want him to think he signed some f—ing Disney kid … It just sucks too because the whole song thing … he called me this morning about the song with Justin.”

But this is the only direct reference to Justin in the film. Other than that, the focus stays on Selena. And her battle with her mental health.

Revelations from the documentary: Selena’s bipolar diagnosis

You might think that being one of the most beloved pop stars is all glitz and glamor. But Selena’s documentary showcases her rock bottom moments and her struggles with mental health. “At one point, she’s like, ‘I don’t want to be alive right now. I don’t want to live.’ And I’m like, ‘Wait, what?’” her former assistant Theresa spoke about a scary time in 2016 after Gomez canceled her tour. “It was one of the moments where you look in her eyes, and there was nothing there. It was so scary.”

This led to a 2018 mental health hospitalization and a bipolar disorder diagnosis in 2019. While Gomez had mentioned her diagnosis before in 2020, she sets the record straight in detail with this film.

Grappling with the weight of her diagnosis was difficult for the star — as it would be for anyone. No wonder she didn’t want to bare it all on camera until now. “I’m gonna be honest. I didn’t wanna go to a mental health hospital,” she says in the film. “I didn’t want to, but I didn’t wanna be trapped in myself in my mind anymore … I thought my life was over. I was like, ‘This is how I’m gonna be forever.’”

Luckily, Gomez is in a better place. And she’s dedicated to acting as an advocate for mental health by sharing her journey.

Revelations from the documentary: Possible Feud between Selena Gomez and her kidney donor, Francia Raisa?

She also talked about her struggles with lupus and how physical health issues have spurred up some unlikely drama.

In 2017, Gomez underwent a kidney transplant. The kidney donor? Friend and fellow actress Francia Raisa. This is why some people are raising eyebrows at Selena’s recent Rolling Stone interview.

Despite Raisa’s heroic act of friendship, Selena told Rolling Stone that Taylor Swift was her “only friend in the industry.” Raisa’s response to Selena’s quote? Raisa posted a one-word Instagram comment in response. “Interesting.”

And, of course, social media erupted. But Selena was not having it. She responded to the allegations of “beef” in the comments of a viral TikTok video about it, writing: “Sorry I didn’t mention every person I know.”

It seems Gomez is determined to put any feuds behind her. Which leads us to …

THAT Hailey Bieber and Selena Gomez photo

You know it. You liked it on Instagram. This viral photo of Hailey Bieber and Selena Gomez and the Academy Gala broke the internet — and for good reason.

For years, the media and fans alike have been pitting Hailey and Selena against each other for Justin Bieber’s heart. But the women have had enough. For the first time ever, they both addressed the ‘feud’ rumors. And to prove that there’s no bad blood between them: this iconic image. This is my Berlin Wall falling. This is my Paris Peace Accord.

“They were at the same event and were asked to take a photo together,” a source close to Selena shared with E! News. “They agreed and decided to clear up the rumors once and for all. They wanted to show that there’s really no hate between them and that they are both in a good place. It was a moment and an opportunity to put all of the noise behind them and they took it.”

And don’t sleep on Rare Beauty!

With the feud behind them, both stars can focus on more important things: being girlbosses. Hailey has the eponymous Rhode Skin, and Selena has Rare Beauty.

  • Worst Celebrity Halloween Costumes: Billie Eilish and Jesse Rutherford? Or Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly?

Worst Celebrity Halloween Costumes: Billie Eilish and Jesse Rutherford? Or Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly?

    [ad_1]

Halloween: a holiday for spooky-themed debauchery. Its allure can partly be attributed to its unabashed celebration of our inner children. We’re encouraged to be creative. To carve pumpkins, dress up in costume, and revel in our shared silliness. We show off our interests — from our favorite characters and to our favorite memes — with our elaborate get-ups. Even if you opt for a minimal, last-minute, or outright “sexy” outfit — bunny ears or cat ears included — it’s all about the fun.

    Until it isn’t.

Halloween is also a night when people exploit this annual opportunity to dress up and cross a line. Racism reigns as people head to parties in offensive costumes, often including cultural appropriation or even Blackface. With the current alarming rise in public anti-semitism, more than a few Nazi costumes were out this year. And after the success of Netflix’s Dahmer, Jeffery Dahmer costumes are also concerningly abundant. Appalling.

There’s still a long way to go. But in the age of increased awareness, thankfully, we’re seeing less of these costumes in public — or at least on social media. Say what you will about cancel culture, but it makes people think twice before doing something stupid. And for that alone, I am grateful.

This especially applies to celebrities. Hopefully, we’re beyond the days of public apologies for blatantly offensive Halloween attire. But this Halloween, a couple of problematic celebrity costumes fell through the cracks. Now that we’re not distracted by as many celebs in Blackface, I guess we have the opportunity to dissect more nuanced costume faux pas.

    Let’s get into it:

First of all, Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly. Hollywood’s most extra couple stepped out as Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee. After the success of the Hulu adaptation starring Lily James and Sebastian Stan, the pair’s fabled romance has been thrust back into the spotlight.

However, there are many things wrong with the Hulu series. For a show supposedly critical of the exploitation of female sexuality, it sure did a bunch of exploiting. The show allegedly examined the media’s power structures that fosters a sexist culture. Yet, those very same structures ignored Anderson’s perspective on the show.

Pamela Anderson was vocally against the show — not wanting to relive that part of her life. Especially seeing it glamorized on screen as some wacky, edgy adventure. And while Anderson herself has done some problematic Halloween costumes, it’s time to untangle her narrative from the media’s portrayal of it.

As if that weren’t bad enough, this revival again branded Pam and Tommy as just another volatile, rock-n-roll relationship. I’m sure you can see why it attracted Megan and MGK. However, what pop culture seems to have forgotten, is that Tommy Lee was convicted of physical assault against Pamela Anderson.

Like many people, MGK and Megan Fox may not have known about the domestic violence in the relationship. And that’s the problem. Rather than prioritizing Anderson’s voice and story, the culture has chosen to highlight a sensationalized version of events. Seems we didn’t learn much from Free Britney.

Excising their relationship’s abusive ending allows the story to live as a glamorized mythos. Ignoring the abuse while capitalizing on Anderson’s trauma reveals that popular culture still has a long way to go.

But Machine Gun Kelly and Megan Fox were not the only ones who made us cringe with their carelessly conceived costumes.

New couple Billie Eilish and Jesse Rutherford had one of the most controversial costumes of the weekend. The two sparked dating rumors a few weeks ago after being repeatedly spotted together.

Given their 11-year age difference, the internet had some thoughts. How old is Billie Eilish? Eilish is 20 — and turns 21 in December. While Rutherford — best known as the lead singer in The Neighborhood — is 32. Not a great look for the ‘Sweater Weather’ singer, who the internet has since been accusing of grooming.

Eilish has spoken about grooming and being taken advantage of by older men early in her career. So fans were surprised about this relationship. Meanwhile, other fans claim that this is the same age gap as Harry Styles and Olivia Wilde — why don’t they get the same hate?

Well, first of all, I’d compare this more to a Leonardo DiCaprio situation. In that instance, Camila Morrone was 21 and free to make the mistake of dating DiCaprio — a relationship that has now, thankfully, ended. But that didn’t make it any less creepy.

Our culture fetishizes younger women, and Eilish has felt this all of her career. So when older men pursue younger women, especially women in their early 20s whose brains literally haven’t fully developed, we’re right to be suspicious. It’s a concerning dynamic. But while we can be critical, it doesn’t help to infantilize Eilish and her decisions.

People gotta to learn the hard way, I guess.

However, the fledgling couple sparked ire this weekend with their Halloween getups. In an attempt to be self-aware about the gossipy conversations about their relationship, they dressed up as a baby and an old man. Gross.

Their exaggeration of the age difference is a pointed jab at the haters. But inadvertently, it’s making light of grooming as a phenomenon. So disappointing as Eilish has been vocal about the industry’s penchant for grooming. And while she’s free to make her own decisions and pursue her own relationships, this costume choice leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Like any concerning Halloween costume, this one ignores the larger social context. Downplaying the concept of grooming is not as funny as the pair thought. For any couple, going as a baby and an old man would be really-really disgusting. For this couple, it’s even more layered.

But luckily for us, this Halloweekend was actually full of great costumes, too.

For celebs, Halloween is an extreme sport. Not only do they have the money and resources to put together the most elaborate costumes — they’re also creatives. If anything, it’s their job to think outside of the box and perform! To entertain! To put on a show! And on Halloween, they deliver.

Now, as social media has upped its game, many celebs take their costume reveals as seriously as their baby reveals. They st up professional photo shoot pictures with extravagant sets with special effects and staging. These are a far cry from my blurry costume photos taken halfway through my nights out.

But I love the extraness! The production value! It’s camp!

So, as a palette cleanser, here are some of the best Halloween costumes from this weekend.

    Kali Uchis as Jessica Rabbit

The Riverdale Girls as the Hocus Pocus Witches

  • You Gotta Keep An Eye Out For Selener

You Gotta Keep An Eye Out For Selener

    [ad_1]

By now, you’ve seen it — the series of photos that broke the internet. You know what I’m talking about. Hailey Bieber and Selena Gomez were pictured together at the Academy Museum Gala, and jaws hit the floor across the nation.

Years from now, we’ll still be able to say where we were when we saw the Hailey and Selena photos. This is how they felt when the Cold War ended. This is the Berlin Wall falling. This is man’s first step on the moon. Earth-shattering, unprecedented, and a whole new frontier.

The vibe has shifted. And Justin Bieber must have a new lock screen.

I’ll admit, at first, I thought the picture was fake. I thought it was one of those photoshopped fan images, like those 90s edits of Br*d Pitt, J*hnny Depp, and L*ondardo DiCaprio all haphazardly photoshopped into the same image. I scrolled on, fully expecting the caption to be by some anonymous moderator begging fellow fans to stop the hate or something. Then I realized the image was posted on the verified Vogue Magazine account. It was a re-gram from celebrity photographer Tyrell Hampton, who captioned the instantly-iconic image with the fitting: “plot twist.”

It hasn’t even been 24 hours but I’m still in a state of shock. That being said, I never really bought into the whole Selena vs. Hailey narrative, but that doesn’t mean I wasn’t aware of it. So much of fandom culture is built on fabricated feuds. Just look at the Don’t Worry Darling press tour.

But this one has gone on for years. And Hailey recently addressed it in her episode on the Call Her Daddy podcast, saying, “I can say, period, point blank, I was never with him when he was in a relationship with anybody — that’s the end of it.”

Selena has also called for an end to the rumors and Hailey hate. After all, she’s booked and busy! With the success of her Hulu show, Only Murders in the Building, and her upcoming documentary, My Mind & Me, as well as her brand, Rare Beauty, she doesn’t have time to worry about her ex.

But even so, I could have never predicted that photo.

While both stars could have continued to milk the press from this alleged feud — all press is good press, right? — this image shows that they’re more invested in a narrative where women don’t fight over men. We love to see it.

Hopefully, the fans will finally leave both of these women alone. And this photo will make it into history books as the most influential peace summit of all time. Give them a Nobel Prize! Nature is healing!

While I’m still reeling from this photo, Selena and Hailey are probably back to minding their business — literally. Both are beauty entrepreneurs in their own right, and I have been browsing their respective selections since the photo dropped.

I mean, it has to be said: one reason it’s so iconic is simply because of how good they both looked. Skin: clear. Makeup: fall perfection. I want to be them. I want to be Justin Bieber, frankly. And so I’ll be buying Rare Beauty and Rhode Skin dupes in spades in an attempt.

While Rhode is currently all sold out, here are the best Rare Beauty finds to recreate that iconic photo:

  • Martin Scorsese Calls Interest in Box Office Totals ‘Repulsive’

Martin Scorsese Calls Interest in Box Office Totals ‘Repulsive’

    [ad_1]

Martin Scorsese is no stranger to making claims that upset the Hollywood establishment. Recently he insisted there’s no correlation between quality and profit. After his comments about his distate for Marvel movies caused some serious uproar in the film industry, it seems he’s doubling down on his opinions.

For a long time, it seems that there’s been some kind of conception that profitability is somehow directly correlated to the quality of art. While the whole thing is extremely subjective, the opinions of critics and the audience are often at odds. Whether we’re talking about movies, TV, video games, or music, there’s often a huge disparity between how much money something made, and the consensus on its quality.

Sometimes, this makes for a cult classic. Other times, people decry critical darlings as pretentious garbage. What Scorsese has to say does hold a very large grain of truth. Scorsese himself didn’t win any major awards until the release of The Departed, a movie that came out well into his career. During a speech he made to introduce his new film Personality Crisis: One Night Only at the New York Film Festival, he better articulated his opinions. He shared the following feelings:

Since the ’80s, there’s been a focus on numbers. It’s kind of repulsive. The cost of a movie is one thing. Understand that a film costs a certain amount, they expect to at least get the amount back, plus, again. The emphasis is now on numbers, cost, the opening weekend, how much it made in the U.S.A., how much it made in England, how much it made in Asia, how much it made in the entire world, how many viewers it got. As a filmmaker, and as a person who can’t imagine life without cinema, I always find it really insulting. I’ve always known that such considerations have no place at the New York Film Festival, and here’s the key also with this: There are no awards here. You don’t have to compete. You just have to love cinema here.

Regardless of if you think Scorsese is just being a grump about his chosen art form, it’s difficult to deny at least a kernel of truth in his concerns.
