Liam Payne will be heard on a new song just weeks after the One Direction star’s death.

Singer-songwriter Sam Pounds announced Monday, October 28, that he is releasing a previously-recorded collaboration with Payne, “Do No Wrong,” on Friday, November 1.

“I pray that this will be a blessing to the world like Liam has always dreamed. I pray angels will comfort you all every day while listening,” Pounds shared via X alongside a presave link to the new track Monday.

“I pray that this song will be a blessing to Ruth, Bear, and the entire family,” he continued, referring to Payne’s sister, Ruth Gibbins, and his son with Cheryl Cole, Bear. “I pray that this song eclipses the negative echoes. I pray supernatural positive healing power will embrace each and every one of you. Presave links here. With love ❤️ let’s all BE the blessing.”

Pounds previously shared behind-the-scenes footage from his recording studio session with Payne via Instagram on Wednesday, October 23. “Yea I see the reports but I knew your heart,” he wrote, adding that Payne also wanted Chris Brown to appear on the track.

Pounds paid tribute to Payne via Instagram on October 17, just a day after the singer fell from a third-story hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on October 16.

“@liampayne my bro 💔🌹I can’t believe I’m writing this post. I can’t believe you are gone in this way,” Pounds wrote at the time. “The happy, funny, and talented brother, father, and friend.”

During his lifetime, Payne released five studio albums with One Direction, four of which reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart. He released his first and only solo album, LP1, in 2019.

Payne died at age 31 earlier this month after falling from a hotel balcony at the CasaSur hotel in Buenos Aires. A partial autopsy subsequently showed that he had “pink cocaine” — a recreational drug that is typically a mix of methamphetamine, ketamine and MDMA — in his system at the time, along with cocaine, benzodiazepine and crack.

The initial preliminary autopsy revealed that Payne may have been “in a state of semi or total unconsciousness” at the time of his fall, as his injuries and the “position in which his body was found” suggested he “did not adopt a reflexive posture to protect himself.”

Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson were connected for life through their stint in One Direction, which became one of the most successful boy bands of all time.

But their friendship wasn’t always smooth-sailing, with the late “Teardrops” singer admitting he and Tomlinson, 32,  “hated” each other at the beginning of their boy band journey.

Later, their bond became unbreakable as they pair openly expressed their adoration for one another in recent years in touching public tributes and interviews.

As news breaks about Payne’s tragic death at age 31 in Buenos Aires, Argentina on Wednesday, October 16, Us Weekly looks back at the bromance between the two 1D stars.

    July 2010

After auditioning for the UK’s X Factor in 2008 but getting cut for being too young, Payne returned two years later for a second shot at fame. Along with Harry Styles, 30, Zayn Malik, 31, and Niall Horan, 31, Payne and Tomlinson were offered the chance to join forces as a boy band. When they all agreed, this marked the beginning of the pop sensation One Direction.

    2013

Payne spoke about how his bond with Tomlinson and the rest of his One Direction bandmates helped him through the demands and pressures at their peak of their success.

“We just take each day as it comes,” Payne told E! News in 2013. “The thing about us is we’re not taking it too seriously. We’re just here to have a bit of a laugh, and then whatever else comes with it is great.”

When asked about the possibility of one day moving on to a solo career if One Direction were to disband, Payne added that he would miss the camaraderie.

“It kinda scares me a little bit to be honest with you,” Payne told the outlet. “I like having the comfort of the other lads on stage.”

He added, “There’s always someone to chat to.”

One Direction shocked their fans by pulling the plug on the band, but insisted at the time they were only going on “hiatus” for an estimated 18-month period.

    December 2016

In 2016, tragedy struck Tomlinson’s life when his mother Johannah Deakin died from leukemia at age 43.

Payne threw his support behind Tomlinson as he grieved, writing a heartfelt note to his bandmate, which he posted via Twitter.

“I am so sorry for you, my brother,” he wrote in the note. “My heart aches for you. Just know I love you the same from a million miles away as I do right next to you. I’m always here for you through everything as you have been for me. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this incredibly sad time.”

Payne added that he “can’t begin to imagine what you are all going through,” and signed off by penning “RIP, Johannah, you are forever in my thoughts.”

Payne opened up about the early days of One Direction and how he and Tomlinson got off on the wrong foot initially.

In an interview with Hits Radio, Payne confessed that he and Tomlinson “absolutely hated each other” at the start.

“When we were in the band it kind of felt like, because he was the oldest and because I’d been singing for quite a bit of time we both got put in a weird position,” Payne told the outlet.

“He was wanting to be the leader and I was doing my thing and wanted to. So at first we didn’t get on at all. We absolutely hated each other, it was so funny. Really bad. We hid it well.”

    March 2019

Tragedy struck again in 2019 when Tomlinson’s younger sister Félicité died of a drug overdose at age 18 in London.

The deaths of Félicité and Johanna featured in Tomlinson’s documentary “All of Those Voices” which was released in 2023.

    October 2021

Payne again reflected on his relationship with Tomlinson over the years while speaking to ET Canada in October 2021.

“Me and Louis did not get along. We all got thrown together, and we didn’t know each other when got made into a band,” Payne said. “Now we are actually the best of friends within the band, which I think is absolutely hilarious … I think even in those moments of angst it breathes a connection between you both.”

    May 2022

Appearing on Logan Paul’s “Impaulsive” podcast in May 2022, Payne caused controversy by speaking candidly about his “rowdy” bandmates, including Tomlinson.

“Louis was wild. And he wanted to be wild. That’s his spirit,” Payne said. “He’s my best mate now but in the band, we hated each other. Like, come-to-blows hated each other. It was close.”

    September 2022

While Payne received much backlash following his comments on the podcast, Tomlinson later publicly defended the “Strip That Down” singer while appearing on podcast, “The Zach Sang Show.”

“It wasn’t too bad,” Tomlinson said in September 2022. “When I first went online and I’d seen the fans… I was waiting for it to kick off”.

Tomlinson acknowledged the difficulties and pressures celebrities face, describing their jobs as “challenging”.

“We all make mistakes of having these judgements when we watch videos or whatever it might be. Let me say this job is f—ing challenging at times, mentally very f—ing challenging at times. And I know no one who’s listening to this wants to f–king hear that cause you know we’ve got it good, I appreciate that.”

    March 2023

After attending the premiere of Tomlinson’s documentary “All of Those Voices”, Payne reflected on not being around enough for Tomlinson as he faced some of his toughest personal challenges.

“Seeing the world through your eyes last night was the most beautiful thing to experience,” Payne wrote via an Instagram tribute post in March 2023. “My neck hurts from how much I’m looking up to you right now you were already my friend and brother but getting to look through that window into your world and mind just extends that respect I have for you. What you’ve dealt with and how you held it all inside. I’m so sorry I was so out of my mind and didn’t do better for you. I feel ashamed in those moments to not be as good of a friend as you have been to me, at least I have time now and I’m me again so will try and make amends.”

[…]

Payne also paid tribute to Tomlinson for being such a good friend to him.

“I’m so thankful to have you in my life mate,” Payne wrote. “I feel so lucky and I know you know this but you were part of a small group of people that literally saved my life, you dragged me out of something so dark I’ve never shared it, but your approach is something I admire and aspire to so I can one day do the same.”

For his part, Tomlinson showed his appreciation that Payne attended the premiere by writing via X, “It means the absolute world. Love you lad!”

Riley Keough shares never-before-seen home videos of Elvis and Lisa Marie Presley ahead of poignant milestone

    [ad_1]

Riley Keough is gearing up to honor her mother Lisa Marie Presley in a big way.

Come next month, the Daisy Jones & the Six actress will be releasing her mother’s memoir, From Here to the Great Unknown, which she helped finish in the wake of her death in 2023.

The only child of legend Elvis Presley, the singer unexpectedly passed away aged 54 on January 12, 2023, after suffering from a cardiac arrest caused by a small bowel obstruction from a previous gastric bypass surgery.

The Life of Lisa Marie Presley

In honor of the poignant day ahead, Riley took to Instagram and shared a video montage featuring rarely-seen, if ever, home videos of her mom with her dad Elvis, and later on in her life.

“Sometimes the most famous among us are the least known,” the video read, as it cut to more clips of Lisa Marie.

It added: “Now, in the last words of the only child of an American icon, Lisa Marie Presley tells her whole story for the first time. In a memoir faithfully completed by her daughter, Riley Keough. Profoundly moving and deeply revealing, this is a book like no other.”

The montage, set to Lisa Marie’s 2012 song “Storm & Grace,” further included videos of both her as a child with her parents, including Priscilla Presley, and later as an adult with her daughter, whose dad is Danny Keough.

“The last words. FROM HERE TO THE GREAT UNKNOWN, out October 8,” she wrote in her caption, and fans were then quick to take to the comments section under the post with supportive messages.

As previously announced, the memoir will cover much of the highs and lows of Lisa Marie’s life: growing up in Graceland and her relationship with her father, her difficult relationship with her mother, insight into her marriages to Michael Jackson, Nicolas Cage, Michael Lockwood and Danny, as well as the heartbreak she experienced after her son Benjamin Keough’s suicide in 2020.

Prince, 27, meanwhile, shared a recent family photo of the Jackson clan via his Instagram on Monday, alongside the caption: “Love you forever Poppa T❤️.” The photo features Prince with his relatives including Tito, grandmother Katherine Jackson, aunt La Toya Jackson, and several of his uncles and cousins.

Rebecca Cheptegei’s former partner has died from injuries sustained in the attack that killed the Ugandan Olympic athlete.

Dickson Ndiema was pronounced dead on Monday, September 9, at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya, according to a statement from the hospital obtained by The New York Times. The statement noted that he had developed respiratory failure after sustaining severe airway burns. Ndiema was 32.

Cheptegei died last week at age 33, days after Ndiema, her ex-boyfriend, allegedly doused her in gasoline and set her on fire. The athlete was taken to the hospital on September 1 following a disagreement with Ndiema at her home in Kenya.

Following the attack, Cheptegei was left with burns on 75 percent of her body and was in critical condition. She died three days later on September 4 after experiencing organ failure.

Ndiema, meanwhile, received burns on about 40 percent of his body and had been receiving treatment at the same hospital as Cheptegei. Police had planned to charge him with murder if he recovered from his burns.

“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei early this morning who tragically fell victim to domestic violence,” Uganda’s athletics federation shared via X on Thursday, September 5. “As a federation, we condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest in peace.”

Donald Rukare, the president of Uganda’s Olympic committee, also shared his condolences for Cheptegei, who finished 44th in the marathon at the Paris Olympics earlier this summer.

“We have learnt of the sad passing on of our Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei OLY following a vicious attack by her boyfriend,” Rukare wrote via X on Thursday. “May her gentle soul rest in peace and we strongly condemn violence against women. This was a cowardly and senseless act that has led to the loss of a great athlete. Her legacy will continue to endure.”

Mariah Carey inundated with fan support as she breaks silence after devastating family deaths

    [ad_1]

Just before Labor Day weekend, Mariah Carey was hit with a devastating family tragedy, when she happened to lose both her mother and her sister on the same day.

The 55-year-old songstress shared on August 26 that both her mother Patricia and older sister Alison had tragically died over that weekend. The former was 87 while the latter was 62.

For the first time since, however, she has returned to social media, sharing a glimpse into her recording studio as she rehearses for an upcoming slate of shows.

Mariah is scheduled to perform in China on September 15 and 16, followed by shows in Brazil on September 20 and 21 (as part of the Rock in Rio festivities), and she’s already back to preparing for her international sojourn.

Her heartfelt message also touched upon the support she’d received from her fanbase and the difficult weeks she’d endured. “Back at work,” she wrote.

“It’s been a couple of rough weeks, but I appreciate everyone’s love and support so much and I can’t wait to see my fans in China & Brazil. Love you!”

Fans welcomed her back with open arms and showed their support for the star. “WE LOVE YOU MARIAH! I’m so glad you’re taking care of yourself during this time,” one wrote, with another saying: “So happy to see you back at work, you deserve our support always,” and a third adding: “How I wish you only knewwwwww… how the lambily feels for you, Queen!”

She has spoken in the past about her difficult relationship with her mother, who was also a singer. Mariah wrote in her memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey: “Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities. It’s never been only black-and-white — it’s been a whole rainbow of emotions.”

Dr. Owen Menach, acting director of the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, where Cheptegei was admitted, told local media that Cheptegei died after all her organs failed on Wednesday, September 4, per the BBC and Sky News.

Donald Rukare, the president of Uganda’s Olympic committee, wrote via X on Thursday, “We have learnt of the sad passing on of our Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei OLY following a vicious attack by her boyfriend.”

Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Jeremiah ole Kosiom previously said that Ndiema “bought a jerrican of petrol, poured it on her and set her ablaze during a disagreement” that took place on Sunday, per the AP.

“The couple were heard quarreling outside their house,” Kosiom said, according to the BBC, who referred to Ndiema as Cheptegei’s “former” boyfriend in their report. “During the altercation, the boyfriend was seen pouring a liquid on the woman before burning her.”

The AP reported that Ndiema received burns during the incident as well and both were taken to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, in Eldoret, a city in Kenya.

Cheptegei competed as a long-distance and marathon runner for Uganda in the 2024 Paris Olympics, finishing in 44th place.

The AP reported that she and Ndemia had argued over land that her house was built on. Cheptegei’s parents said the athlete bought land and moved to Trans Nzoia in order to continue her training.

After the incident, police commander Kosiom spoke with The Standard, revealing that neighbors put out the fire before rushing Cheptegei and Ndiema to the hospital. A “five-liter yellow jerrican, a bag and a black marvin” and “burnt mobile phone” were reportedly collected at the scene for “forensic analysis,” Kosiom continued.

Prior to Cheptegei’s appearance in this year’s Paris Olympics, she competed in various marathons. She ended 2022 with a fourth-place finish in the ADNOC Abu Dhabi Marathon, which allowed her to secure her spot at the Olympics. Cheptegei has been competing as a professional athlete since 2010, winning the Kampala 10,000 meter race in Kampala, Uganda that year.

  • Leonard Riggio, who forged a bookselling empire at Barnes & Noble, dead at 83

Leonard Riggio, who forged a bookselling empire at Barnes & Noble, dead at 83

    [ad_1]

NEW YORK (AP) — Leonard Riggio, a brash, self-styled underdog who transformed the publishing industry by building Barnes & Noble into the country’s most powerful bookseller before his company was overtaken by the rise of Amazon.com, has died at age 83.

Riggio died Tuesday “following a valiant battle with Alzheimer’s disease,” according to a statement issued by his family. He had stepped down as chairman in 2019 after the chain was sold to the hedge fund Elliott Advisors.

“His leadership spanned decades, during which he not only grew the company but also nurtured a culture of innovation and a love for reading,” reads a statement from Barnes & Noble.

Riggio’s near-half-century reign began in 1971 when he used a $1.2 million loan to purchase Barnes & Noble’s name and the flagship store on lower Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. He acquired hundreds of new stores over the next 20 years and, in the 1990s, launched what became a nationwide empire of “superstores” that combined a chain’s discount prices and massive capacity with the cozy appeal of couches, reading chairs and cafes.

“Our bookstores were designed to be welcoming as opposed to intimidating,” Riggio told The New York Times in 2016. “These weren’t elitist places. You could go in, get a cup of coffee, sit down and read a book for as long as you like, use the restroom. These were innovations that we had that no one thought was possible.”

He grew up working class in New York City, liked to say he preferred socializing with childhood pals over fellow business leaders and was informal enough among associates to be known as “Lenny.” But in his time no one in the book world was more feared. With the power to make any given book a bestseller, or a flop, to alter the market on an idle whim, Riggio could terrify publishers simply by suggesting prices were too high or that he might sign up such top sellers as Stephen King and John Grisham and publish them himself. He even tried to buy the country’s biggest book wholesaler, Ingram, in 1999, but backed off after facing government resistance.

By the end of the 1990s, an estimated one of every eight books sold in the U.S. were purchased through the chain, where front table displays were so valuable that publishers paid thousands of dollars to have their books included. Thousands of independent sellers went out of business even as Riggio insisted that he was expanding the market by opening up in neighborhoods without an existing store. Instead, independent owners spoke of being overwhelmed by competition from both Barnes & Noble and Borders Book Group, the rival chains sometimes setting up stores in close proximity to each other and to the locally owned business.

Barnes & Noble became so identified as an overdog that one of the 1990s’ most popular romantic comedies, “You’ve Got Mail,” starred Tom Hanks as an executive for the “Fox Books” chain and Meg Ryan as the owner of an endangered independent store in Manhattan.

“We are going to seduce them with our square footage, and our discounts, and our deep arm chairs, and our cappuccino,” Hanks’ character confidently declares. “They’re going to hate us at the beginning, but we’ll get ’em in the end.”

    Acrimony from independent booksellers

For a time, it seemed industry conversation was an ongoing response to Barnes & Noble. Publishers were known to change the cover or title of a book simply because a Barnes & Noble official had objected. “Angela’s Ashes” author Frank McCourt found himself condemned by the American Booksellers Association, the trade organization for independents, after agreeing to appear in a Barnes & Noble commercial. On the floor of the industry’s annual national trade show, long hosted by the ABA, independent store employees would hiss at attendees wearing Barnes & Noble badges.

When novelist Russell Banks, addressing Barnes & Noble’s annual shareholder meeting in 1995, declared that he was both a stock holder and a happy B&N customer, some independent sellers stopped offering his books.

“You must know that I’ll never read, buy or sell another word you write,” Richard Howorth, owner of Square Books in Oxford, Mississippi, wrote to him. “These are the kindest things I can think of to say to you.”

Tensions led to legal action when the ABA — on the eve of the 1994 convention — announced it was suing Barnes & Noble and five leading publishers for unfair trade practices. Some of the publishers were so angered they boycotted the gathering the following year and only returned after the ABA sold the show to Reed Exhibitions. In 1998, the ABA sued Barnes & Noble and Borders for unfair business practices (both cases were settled out of court).

    The internet shifts bookselling

Riggio began the 2000s at the height of power, with more than 700 superstores and hundreds of others outlets. But internet commerce was growing quickly and Barnes & Noble, with its roots in physical retail, lacked the imagination and flexibility of the startup from Seattle that called itself “Earth’s Biggest Bookstore,” Amazon.com. The online giant launched in 1995 by Jeff Bezos gained business throughout the 2000s and by the early 2010s had displaced Barnes & Noble through such innovations as the Kindle e-book reader and the Amazon Prime subscription service.

Bezos would liken himself to David taking down Goliath, although the contrast between the leaders also had the feel of an Aesop’s fable: The muscular, mustachioed Riggio, a boxer’s son, upended by the quick and clever Bezos.

“We’re great booksellers; we know how to do that,’’ Riggio acknowledged to the Times in 2016. “We weren’t constituted to be a technology company.”

Barnes & Noble started its own online site in the late 1990s, but such initiatives as the Nook e-book reader and a self-publishing platform failed to stop Amazon. Not even the collapse of Borders after the 2008-2009 economic crisis mattered for Barnes & Noble, which after decades of expansion closed more than 100 stores between 2009 and 2019.

An unlikely ally of independent booksellers

By the time of Riggio’s retirement, independent sellers regarded the chain not as a threat, but as an ally in the fight against Amazon to keep physical stores alive. At the 2018 booksellers convention, Riggio and ABA CEO Oren Teicher, once enemies in business and in court, praised each other during a joint appearance.

“My standing here, doing what I’m about to do (introduce Riggio) would have been impossible to imagine several years ago,” Teicher said at the time. “The simple fact is that our business is stronger and American readers benefit when there is a vibrant and healthy network of brick-and-mortar bookshops all across the country.”

During the 2010s, Barnes & Noble seemed unleadable and unwanted. The board announced in 2010 that the company was for sale, but no one offered to buy it. Four CEOs left in five years and Barnes & Noble’s stock dropped 60% between 2015 and 2018. New rumors of a sale lasted for months before Elliott Advisors, which had previously purchased the British chain Waterstones, bought Barnes & Noble for $638 million and hired Waterstones chief executive James Daunt to lead B&N.

“I don’t miss being a business person, I had enough of that. But I do miss the bookselling part, helping to find books to recommend to customers,” Riggio told Publishers Weekly in 2021.

Riggio’s roots and early bookselling ventures

Bookselling and family often overlapped for Riggio. His brother Steve Riggio served for years as vice chairman of Barnes & Noble and another brother, Vincent “Jimi” Riggio, helped run a trucking company that shipped the store’s books. After being interviewed in 1974 by the trade publication College Store Executive, Leonard Riggio met for coffee with the editor, Louise Gebbia, who seven years later became his second wife (Riggio had three children, two with his first wife, one with his second).

Leonard S. Riggio was the eldest son of a prize fighter (who twice defeated Rocky Graziano) turned cab driver and a dress maker. Even in childhood, he advanced quickly, skipping two grades and attending one of the city’s top high schools, Brooklyn Tech. He studied metallurgical engineering at New York University’s night school before focusing on commerce, and by day absorbed the bookselling world and the rising cultural rebellion of the 1960s.

Working as a floor manager at the campus book store, he learned enough to drop out of school and start a rival shop in 1965 — SBX (Student Book Exchange), where he allowed student activists to use the copying machine to print copies of anti-war leaflets. SBX was so successful he bought several other campus stores and was in position by 1971 to buy Barnes & Noble and its single Manhattan store. A few years later, he became the rare bookseller to run television commercials, with the catchphrase “Barnes & Noble! Of Course! Of Course!”

Riggio and the independent community may have seemed to hold opposing values, but they shared a love of reading and the arts and a liberal political outlook. He was a generous philanthropist and a prominent supporter of Democratic politicians. He was even friendly with the consumer activist and presidential candidate Ralph Nader, who featured Riggio, Ted Turner and Yoko Ono among others in his 2009 novel “Only the Super-Rich Can Save Us!”, in which Nader imagines a progressive revolution from above.

“Ever since he was a boy from Brooklyn, he’d had a visceral reaction to the way workings stiffs and the poor were treated on a day-to-day basis,” Nader wrote of Riggio, who did at times stand apart from his management peers. When some 200 business leaders were questioned by Fortune magazine in the 1990s about their political ideas, only Riggio supported the raising of worker pay.

“Money can become a burden, like something you carry on your shoulders,” he told New York magazine in 1999. “My nature is to be a ball-buster, but my role is to help people.”

This story has been updated to correct the names of Riggio’s second wife and one of his brothers. They are Louise Gebbia, not Louise Altavilla, and Vincent “Jimi,” not Thomas.

Sidney Raymond Eudy, a professional wrestler known as Sid Vicious who was known for his intense persona and imposing stature, has died, his son announced Monday. He was 63.

Gunnar Eudy, one of the wrestler’s two sons, wrote on Facebook that his father died after “battling cancer for several years.”

“He was a man of strength, kindness, and love, and his presence will be greatly missed,” his son wrote. “We appreciate your thoughts and prayers as we grieve this loss.”

The 6-foot-9-inch Eudy went by many names in the ring, including Sid Justice and Sycho Sid, and rose to prominence at the height of the WrestleMania craze in the 1990s. He was a two-time champion in the World Wrestling Federation (now World Wrestling Entertainment) and also performed for its ’90s rival World Championship Wrestling and the United States Wrestling Association. He faced off against Hulk Hogan and The Undertaker among other stars.

In a statement, WWE called Eudy “one of the most imposing and terrifying competitors of his generation” who had a “natural charisma that immediately connected with the WWE Universe.”

“Sid’s reputation as one of the toughest and most thrilling superstars cemented his legacy in WWE, and his influence can still be seen in wrestling rings around the world,” the statement said.

Eudy was born in West Memphis, Arkansas, and lived in Tennessee for many years. Survivors include his wife, Sabrina Estes Eudy, his sons Frank and Gunnar, and his grandchildren.
