  • Derms Say These 10 Hydrating Serums Are Dry Skin’s Worst Nightmare

Derms Say These 10 Hydrating Serums Are Dry Skin’s Worst Nightmare

Hyaluronic acid acts as a humectant, meaning it retains water. “HA is a chain of carbohydrates that has the ability to hold on to water up to 1000 times its weight,” says David Kim, MD, MS, a board-certified dermatologist. “It’s an ingredient that helps your skin appear hydrated and plump.”

There isn’t just one form of hyaluronic acid, either—it comes in different sizes that are able to penetrate different layers of the skin. “Each molecule is assigned a molecular weight, which inversely relates to how deep the molecule can penetrate the skin,” says Rina Allawh, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at Schweiger Dermatology Group in King of Prussia, PA. The smaller the molecule, the deeper into the skin it’s able to penetrate.

It may seem like you’d always want to go for the hyaluronic acid with the lowest molecular weight possible, but that’s not always the case. “The advantage of higher-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid serums are the anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, as it forms a durable film with the top layer of the skin,” says Allawh. “A low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid serum is more likely to have a lasting anti-wrinkle and regenerating effect and works in the deeper levels of the skin. As you can imagine, lower-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid serums are able to lock in the moisture in the connective tissue of the skin and, as a result, stimulate firming effects.”

If you tuned in to the Critics Choice Awards on Sunday (or maybe you didn’t watch the show but scrolled through our roundup of the most exciting red carpet looks), you saw Madelyn Cline. The star of Outer Banks and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery walked the red carpet wearing a feathered Givenchy gown and a glowing makeup look reminiscent of Old Hollywood and Sophia Loren.

As it turns out, that sultry, glowing makeup look was created using products from an iconic drugstore brand. In fact, all of the products her makeup artist, Jen Tioseco, used to create the look were $15 and under (yes, really). It’s further proof that the cost of a product doesn’t determine its efficacy. “For Madelyn’s look, as soon as we saw the feathered Givenchy gown, we knew we wanted to play into Old Hollywood glamour,” Tioseco said. “We didn’t want to overpower the gown with overly bold glam, so we focused on bronzed, glowy skin with her signature liner and pouty lips. It was the perfect balance to let both the dress and her glam have their own moments while complementing each other perfectly.”

18 Jaw-Dropping Golden Globes Beauty Looks We Totally Want to Steal

After all, it’s the first show of the New Year and, in a sense, the one that dictates the hair and makeup trends for all others that follow.

So without further ado, keep scrolling to see the 18 most jaw-dropping beauty looks from the 2023 Golden Globes.

  • TikTok’s “Moisture Sandwiching” Trend Really Works, But Only If You Know *This*

TikTok’s “Moisture Sandwiching” Trend Really Works, But Only If You Know *This*

If you’re unsure about what moisture sandwiching is or the best way to go about doing it, look no further. “A moisture sandwich refers to a technique of layering products that hydrate the skin to optimally moisturize the skin,” says board-certified dermatologist Marisa Garshick, MD. “The method specifically refers to applying ingredients to damp skin to help draw moisture in and then sealing it all in with a thicker moisturizing product, such as a cream or an ointment. In this way, it is best to layer the products from thinnest to thickest, using lightweight products first to ensure proper absorption and then heavier creams. There is an added benefit of applying products to damp skin as it can help to enhance penetration and also works to draw moisture in, especially when the product being applied is a humectant, such as hyaluronic acid or glycerin, which is known to attract moisture.”

Funnily enough, I started doing this before even hearing about the TikTok trend using my Evian Facial Spray ($23) because I found that it really helped my dry, barrier-damaged skin. As soon as I heard about the TikTok trend and received a bit of insight into it, I knew I was doing the right thing.

There’s another thing to consider, however, if you have a damaged skin barrier and want to try moisture sandwiching. According to board-certified dermatologist, Lauren Penzi, MD, the optimal water content for the stratum corneum (outermost layer of skin) is between 10% and 30%. This means you shouldn’t go overboard and flood your skin with water before going in with your hyaluronic acid serum. If you go over that 30% mark, you might be hurting your skin instead of helping it. Carl Thornfeldt, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of Epionce Skincare says to make sure you’re aware of this.

“Providing your skin with proper hydration is not as straightforward as TikTok makes it seem,” he shares. “If the skin barrier is healthy and intact, it will hold in moisture better. However, if the skin barrier is not healthy, adding more moisture won’t help in the long term. A healthy skin barrier has about 30% water. If you start going above and beyond that 30% mark with too much hydration, the skin barrier actually starts to break. Achieving healthy skin is not about having the highest amount of moisture, it’s about getting the skin barrier healthy so it can hold the amount of moisture needed to stay healthy.”

Thornfeldt isn’t saying that you shouldn’t hydrate your skin, of course. But he is saying that you should focus on incorporating ingredients that strengthen the skin’s barrier in addition to water-attracting ingredients like hyaluronic acid. Ceramides are really helpful for this, as they help replenish essential lipids within the skin barrier.

  • Derms and Aestheticians Always Recommend These 16 Serums for Sensitive Skin

Derms and Aestheticians Always Recommend These 16 Serums for Sensitive Skin

Luckily, there are a lot of options for someone who has sensitive skin, says dermatological nurse and celebrity aesthetician Natalie Aguilar. “All of my clients have a serum in their routine, as serums are fluid-like in nature and can deliver active ingredients deeper into the skin,” she explains. “This allows actives to treat and calm my clients’ sensitive-skin conditions such as redness, dryness, irritation, and inflammation.”

Anthony Rossi, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, says serums that are devoid of irritating filler ingredients, such as parabens and sulfates, and ultra-concentrated additives, such as retinol, work well for sensitive skin. “Even though retinol has benefits, it may be too harsh for those with sensitive skin,” he says.

Serums are usually higher in active or absorbable beneficial ingredients than heavy creams. And because of that, SkinSpirit lead aesthetician Karen Fernandez says that it’s important that your serum is high quality with natural and medical-grade ingredients.

  • There’s No Stopping H.E.R.: The Singer Talks Beauty, Music, and More

There’s No Stopping H.E.R.: The Singer Talks Beauty, Music, and More

Another way that H.E.R. is staying true to herself is by representing a brand that coincides with her beliefs. As an ambassador for L’Oréal, H.E.R. is able to work with a brand that she feels aligned with. I caught up with her ahead of the brand’s annual Women of Worth event, which celebrates the philanthropic achievements of 10 nonprofit leaders who are committed to helping communities across the country.

“It’s really cool to be a part of something like this,” H.E.R. says. “You go throughout life, and you [wonder], ‘How can I create change? How can I help? How can I use my platform?’ That’s exactly what this event is about. That’s what L’Oréal is about—extending your platform and showing up and being the support that I think we all need. These women are really actively creating change. This is actually the work and not just saying you’re about change, but being about it.”

Being able to work with L’Oréal is a dream come true for H.E.R. “I’ve always been a L’Oréal girl,” she says. “I never thought I would be able to work with a beauty brand.”

Beauty means a lot to the singer, as she’s always used it as a mirror for her emotions. “It’s really about the inside and what makes you feel good on the inside,” she says. She reveals that she lets her feelings dictate how she dresses and presents herself.

This, of course, makes sense. If you live for award shows, you’ll know that H.E.R.’s looks are often one of the highlights of the red carpet. She’s not afraid to play around and experiment with makeup, like the bold eyeshadow look she wore to perform with Alica Keys or the graphic cat eye she sported at the Oscars, and it pays off in spades. “I recently tried a new eyeliner look that I’m obsessed with,” she says. “It’s been a trend, and I finally did it myself. But I went to Doja Cat’s birthday party, and I did this liner look. The liner kind of extends the inner corner of your eye.”

  • True or False: Cleansing Balms Are One of the Best Things You Can Use for Acne

True or False: Cleansing Balms Are One of the Best Things You Can Use for Acne

The word noncomedogenic is key here. This means that the product is formulated without pore-clogging ingredients that tend to trap dirt and sebum. A few highly comedogenic ingredients that Shirazi recommends avoiding are coconut oil, isopropyl myristate, lanolin, and algae extract. “Lanolin is a waxy, oily substance that helps retain moisture but can worsen acne and clog pores,” she says. “Look for cleansing balms with almond, argan, grape-seed, and castor oil [instead]. You’ll also want to avoid ones with alcohol and salt, which can dry and irritate the skin.”

To sum up, cleansing balms are a great alternative to makeup wipes and provide extra hydration for the skin, as long as you choose the right one for you. Those with acne-prone skin and ingredient sensitivities will want to read the label carefully before selecting one to add to their routine. To give you a head start on your search, I’ve rounded up the best cleansing balms for acne-prone skin below.

Don’t Tell Anyone, But Amazon Has My Favorite On-Sale Fashion and Beauty Items

Whenever I think of Amazon, the first thing that comes to mind is décor, home-organization pieces, and last-minute Halloween costumes. Recently, however, that’s changed for me. I have been seeing great fashion and beauty products ordered from Amazon all over my TikTok, and I’m amazed at how many really great products people were ordering from Amazon. It seems like I’m a little behind the curve, but I’ve seen the light and realized Amazon is not just a spot for makeup-brush holders and black cat ears. It’s actually a go-to spot for skincare, makeup, and clothing items. During my latest Amazon deep dive, I found 27 products that are so good you’d never guess I ordered them on Amazon. Not to mention, Cyber Week is here, so Amazon is offering major discounts right now.

  • Actress Marlow Barkley Is Keeping It Merry and Bright

Actress Marlow Barkley Is Keeping It Merry and Bright

You and Chris O’Dowd were cast first. Did you do any chemistry testing together? Or with Jason Momoa?

I did a chemistry [test] with Jason but not with Chris. I got lucky because Chris and I just clicked on set, which is weird because our characters don’t click immediately in the movie. But we got along really well.

The chemistry test with Jason was on Zoom, and at first, I was really nervous because this was my first time meeting him. But again, he made me feel very comfortable. I had a really fun time reading our scenes together because he actually got up in the middle of our scene to quiet down his dog that was barking. That moment brought me back down to earth, and I was like, “Oh, he’s a real person.” It immediately took away all the stress and ended up being really easy.

Knowing that you’re early in your career, why do you think it’s important to tell these kinds of complex coming-of-age stories? Or is it more about the character that you’re looking to play?

After reading the script, I told the director, Francis Lawrence, during my audition that, even if I don’t get this role, I’ll still watch the movie because I felt very connected to Nemo. Her coming-of-age story, as I was filming it, felt like it was my own coming-of-age story. I felt like I was going on this big journey with Nemo. The things that she realizes in the movie have helped me in real life—to be patient with people and be more aware of my surroundings.

I noticed that you spend a lot of time underwater in Slumberland. But I assume that’s all CGI and special effects, right? What was it like acting through such imagination?

It was pretty insane. Some parts were terrifying. Some parts were thrilling. I think I was so terrified that it became thrilling for some of the scenes. But it has always been my dream to do stunts. So getting to do a lot of my own stunts was really cool. We filmed a lot in a pool, so I was underwater for water scenes.

Oh, wow! I didn’t realize you were really in the water. I thought that was all special effects.

Yes, but the crew was very calm about it. And they were like, “If you ever need a break, just let us know.” So I felt calmer filming those scenes. But there was just one stunt that I did that I was very nervous for (it was when I fell off the boat), and when I was practicing and the waves started going, I was like, “I can’t. I can’t do this. I’m sorry.” My stunt double Giuliana comes up, and she’s like, “You know what? I’m going to show you it’s totally okay. If you can’t do it, let me know, and we’ll put your face on my body.” So she demonstrated it and was talking me through it step by step. Then we started the waves at 50% speed and then 75% and then 100%, and it just became a lot easier.

Well, kudos to you. I’m blown away. I thought that was the magic of cinema, but really, it’s the magic of acting. That’s amazing. You have a lot of solid acting experience under your belt now. You are obviously very multitalented—musicals and stunts now, of course. What kinds of roles are you looking to pursue next?

I really want to be in a horror movie. I’m a scaredy-cat, and I cannot watch horror movies. They freak me out unless I’m with a good group of people. But I would love, love, love to be in a horror movie. I want one that’s like super graphic, a lot of fun makeup. I want a cool fight scene where my nose is bleeding and I’ve got this big injury or I play a monster or I’m possessed. That would be so much fun because I’d get to see what it’s like behind the scenes. … In Slumberland, there was not a lot of big, crazy, bloody action/scary stuff, so it’d be cool to see how horror movies work.
