‘I made a rude comment and it was wrong’: James Corden addresses Balthazar incident on ‘Late Late Show’ | CNN

    CNN
     —

James Corden used his opening monologue in Monday’s “The Late Late Show” to address the recent incident that saw him temporarily banned from a New York brasserie.

The British host of the CBS talk show said it was never his intention to upset anybody, and that he would like to “apologize in person.”

Corden told the audience that he had been adopting a “British attitude” of keeping calm and carrying on as things get written about him, following his motto: “Never complain. Never explain.”

But, as his dad – who was seated in the audience – reminded him, he “did complain, and so (he) might need to explain.”

Corden said he had been having breakfast with friends at Balthazar in New York, during which his wife explained she had a serious food allergy. He said she had been brought an incorrect order three times, when he “in the heat of the moment…made a sarcastic, rude comment about cooking it myself.”

“It’s a comment I deeply regret,” he added.

Corden said he didn’t realize he had done anything wrong because he didn’t “shout or scream.”

“I didn’t get up out of my seat. I didn’t call anyone names or use derogatory language. I’ve been walking around thinking that I hadn’t done anything wrong, right, but the truth is I have. I made a rude comment and it was wrong, it was an unnecessary comment, it was ungracious to the server,” he said.

When he read an Instagram post from the owner of Balthazar, Keith McNally, banning him from the restaurant, he immediately called him up to tell him how upset he was to have hurt anyone, which cleared the air.

After initially banning Corden last week citing abusive behavior, McNally posted that the comedian had “apologized profusely” in a call, and all was resolved.

Corden concluded the monologue by saying he would like to go to Balthazar when he was back in New York and apologize in person.

Adidas terminates partnership with Ye | CNN Business

    New York
    CNN Business
     —

Adidas had ended its partnership with Ye, also known as Kanye West, with “immediate effect.”

In a statement Tuesday, the sportswear maker said it “does not tolerate antisemitism and any other sort of hate speech” and said that his recent comments were ‘unacceptable, hateful and dangerous.” Adidas said they violated the company’s “values of diversity and inclusion, mutual respect and fairness.”

Sales and production of his Yeezy branded products have stopped as well as payments to Ye and his companies. Adidas said it will take a €250 million hit ($246 million) to its fourth quarter sales.

Adidas has partnered with West since 2013, when the company signed his brand away from rival Nike. In 2016, Adidas expanded its relationship with the rapper, calling it “the most significant partnership ever created between a non-athlete and an athletic brand.”

But Adidas put the “partnership under review” in early October after he wore a “White Lives Matter” T-shirt in public. The Anti-Defamation League categorizes the phrase as a “hate slogan” used by White supremacist groups, including the Ku Klux Klan.

Recently, Ye said “I can say antisemitic s*** and Adidas cannot drop me,” during a tirade against Jews on the Drink Champs Podcast.

The list of brands distancing themselves from West is growing. Balenciaga and Vogue publicly cut ties last week, and on Monday, talent agency CAA dropped West as a client. Production company MRC said that it’s shelving a documentary on West.

Shares of Adidas fell about 5% in Frankfurt. Adidas said it will release additional information about the financial implications of dissolving its partnership with Ye in its upcoming earnings report on November 9.

  • Kei Komuro, husband of Japan’s Princess Mako, passes New York bar on third try | CNN

Kei Komuro, husband of Japan’s Princess Mako, passes New York bar on third try | CNN

    [ad_1]

    Reuters
     —

The third time’s the charm in the New York bar exam for Kei Komuro, a law clerk at law firm Lowenstein Sandler and the husband of Japan’s Princess Mako.

Komuro’s name appeared on the list of those who passed New York’s July bar exam released October 20, after the Japanese press zeroed in on his failure to pass the July 2021 and February 2022 attorney licensing tests.

He beat the odds as a repeat bar-taker – just 23% of the more than 1,600 people who took the July exam after failing at least once passed, according to statistics from the New York Board of Law Examiners. The pass rate for those taking the exam for the first time in July was 75%.

Komuro has been an object of fascination and scrutiny in his native Japan for years, partly due to his status as a commoner. Princess Mako, the niece of Emperor Naruhito, who is now known as Mako Komuro, is no longer a member of the imperial family following the couple’s October 2021 marriage.

Komuro graduated with a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from Fordham University School of Law in May 2021 and has been working as a law clerk in Lowenstein Sandler’s New York headquarters for the past year – a designation firms typically bestow on new hires who have not yet passed the bar exam.

His success in the latest bar exam clears the way for him to be elevated to associate at Lowenstein, though the firm did not respond to requests Monday for clarification on his current status. Komuro, who works in the firm’s corporate and technology groups, also did not respond to requests for comment.

With more than 300 attorneys, Lowenstein Sandler is the 140th-largest law firm in the country and ranked 103rd in US law firm revenue with $392 million in 2021, according to the American Lawyer.

Bar exam tutors say the test is especially difficult for non-native English speakers. The pass rate for foreign-educated lawyers, or LL.M.s, was 44% in July. Komuro began his US legal studies in Fordham’s LL.M. program in 2017 before transferring over to its J.D. program. The first-time bar exam pass rate among Fordham’s 2021 J.D.s was 94%.

July’s bar exam passers are scheduled to be officially admitted into the New York bar on January 11.

Eric McCormack and others remember Leslie Jordan: ‘The funniest and flirtiest southern gent I’ve ever known’ | CNN

    CNN
     —

The unexpected passing of television star and social media darling Leslie Jordan has spurred a flood of heartfelt tributes.

The actor died on Monday, his talent agent Sarabeth Schedeen told CNN in a statement. He was 67.

Jordan’s most recognizable credit was his time on “Will & Grace” as Beverley Leslie, a role he reprised throughout the show’s run, including its recent reboot.

Co-star Eric McCormack posted two tributes to Jordan on his Instagram, with one showing showing the pair performing for the cameras on the show.

“Crushed to learn about the loss of @thelesliejordan, the funniest and flirtiest southern gent I’ve ever known,” McCormack wrote in the caption. “The joy and laughter he brought to every one of his #WillandGrace episodes was palpable. Gone about 30 years too soon. You were loved sweet man.”

Sean Hayes, who played Jack on the NBC sitcom, also shared a photo, calling Jordan “one of the funniest people I ever had the pleasure of working with.”

“Everyone who ever met him, loved him. There will never be anyone like him,” he wrote. “A unique talent with an enormous, caring heart. Leslie, you will be missed, my dear friend.”

The official account for “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” on which Jordan acted as a guest judge, also shared a tribute, thanking Jordan on Twitter for “the countless laughs and for sharing your spirit with us all.”

Celebrities from across television and film – both those who worked with Jordan and not – also honored the actor.

“Leslie was such a light for so many,” actress Michelle Pfeiffer wrote on Instagram. “Generously gifting the world with his love and humor, especially during this lockdown; one of our bleakest and loneliest times. He lived everyday to bring joy to every one he came in contact with.”

Loni Love shared a sweet memory, writing that the last time they worked together was when they both guest co-hosted CBS’s “The Talk” and Jordan “was so much fun to be around.”

“[He] always had a funny story and he inspired me to keep going in an industry that could be ageist,” she wrote. “I will miss you my friend. Mama is waiting on you.”

On Twitter, Lynda Carter remembered Jordan for being someone who “put a smile on the faces of so many, especially with his pandemic videos.”

“What a feat to keep us all laughing and connected in such difficult times,” she wrote. “It feels so cruel that this could happen to such a beautiful soul.”

Jordan’s most recent role was on Fox’s “Call Me Kat.” The show, which is currently in its third season, halted filming in wake of the news of Jordan’s death, according to a Fox Entertainment spokesperson.

In a statement provided to CNN, Fox Entertainment said Jordan “was far more than an Emmy Award winning comedic talent with whom we’ve laughed alongside for all these years. He was the kindest person you could ever imagine who simply lit up a room and brought pure joy and huge smiles to millions of people around the world.”

Los Angeles officials condemn demonstrators seen in photos showing support of Kanye West’s antisemitic remarks | CNN

    [ad_1]

    CNN
     —

Los Angeles officials are condemning the display of banners from a freeway overpass this weekend by a group of demonstrators seen in bystander photos showing support for antisemitic comments recently made by rapper Kanye West, also known as Ye.

West has recently made a series of antisemitic outbursts, notably on October 8, when he tweeted he was “going death con 3 [sic] On JEWISH PEOPLE,” and also that, “You guys have toyed with me and tried to black ball anyone whoever opposes your agenda,” without specifying what group he was addressing, according to the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine records pulled by CNN.

His tweet has since been removed, and Twitter locked his account. In an interview conducted after the controversial tweet, West told Piers Morgan that he was sorry for the people that he hurt, though he also said that he didn’t regret making the remark.

Photos taken Saturday show a small group of demonstrators with their arms raised in what appears to be the Nazi salute behind banners reading, “honk if you know” alongside “Kanye is right about the Jews.”

Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón lambasted the incident on Twitter Sunday saying, “We cannot tolerate the #AntiSemitism that was on full display today [Saturday] on an LA Fwy. #WhiteSupremacy is a societal cancer that must be excised. This message is dangerous & cannot be normalized. I stand with the Jewish community in condemning this disgusting behavior.”

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti also took to Twitter, saying, “We condemn this weekend’s anti-Semitic incidents. Jewish Angelenos should always feel safe. There is no place for discrimination or prejudice in Los Angeles. And we will never back down from the fight to expose and eliminate it.”

The number of reported incidents of assault, vandalism and harassment targeting Jewish communities and individuals in the United States was the highest on record in 2021, according to the Anti-Defamation League.

A total of 2,717 antisemitic incidents were reported last year – the highest on record, according to an ADL audit released in April. That was a 34% increase compared to the 2,026 incidents reported in 2020, the group said.

“This is an outrageous effort to fan the flames of antisemitism gripping the nation,” ADL of Los Angeles Regional Director Jeffrey Abrams said in a statement posted on the group’s Twitter account Sunday. “This group, known for espousing antisemitism and white supremacist ideology, is now leveraging Ye’s antisemitism and is proof that hate breeds more hate.”

Abrams went on to call out Adidas, which is reviewing its partnership with West, saying “decisive action against antisemitism by Adidas is long overdue.”

CNN has been unable to reach a representative for West for comment.

The banner appeared over the busy Los Angeles freeway a day before Beverly Hills police reported antisemitic flyers being distributed in the city, CNN affiliate KCAL/KCBS reported.

Beverly Hills Mayor Lili Bosse condemned the flyers and the banner as “disgusting hate speech” in a tweet. “As a daughter of an Auschwitz survivor, I will always bear witness and speak out.”

    CNN
     —

Taylor Swift is getting some enthusiastic support from another music icon upon the release of her new album “Midnights.”

In “Snow On The Beach,” the fourth track from the album released on Friday, Swift calls out none other than Janet Jackson, and the “Control” singer approves.

Jackson shared a video to her Instagram on Friday of herself listening to the song, in which Swift can be heard singing, “Now I’m all for you like Janet,” in a nod to Jackson’s Grammy-winning 2001 hit single and album “All for You.”

The name-drop makes Jackson smile widely as she listens and jams to the song, which was a collaboration between Swift and Lana Del Rey. After humming along to the melody, Jackson sweetly says, “It’s nice, it’s nice,” at the end of the clip.

    In the caption, Jackson wrote, “i LUV it @taylorswift #snowonthebeach #taylorswift #lanadelray”.

“Midnights,” Swift’s tenth original studio album, is already breaking records, with Spotify announcing on Saturday that it helped the ever-popular “Evermore” singer to achieve new heights.

“Midnights” on Friday became Spotify’s most-streamed album in a single day, the music streaming platform shared. That feat also allowed Swift to break the record for the most-streamed artist in a single day in Spotify history.

    CNN
     —

Singer Carly Simon paid tribute to her two sisters, Joanna and Lucy, who died just a day apart of each other this week, both from cancer.

Joanna Simon, 85, died of thyroid cancer on Wednesday and Lucy Simon, 82, died of metastatic breast cancer Thursday, Simon’s manager, Larry Ciancia, confirmed to CNN.

“I am filled with sorrow to speak about the passing of Joanna and Lucy Simon. Their loss will be long and haunting,” Simon said in a statement to CNN.

All three sisters were musically talented. Joanna Simon was an opera singer and Lucy Simon was a performer and composer who was nominated for a Tony Award for the score of the “The Secret Garden” musical.

“As sad as this day is, it’s impossible to mourn them without celebrating their incredible lives that they lived,” Simon said. “We were three sisters who not only took turns blazing trails and marking courses for one another, we were each others secret shares. The co-keepers of each other’s memories.”

“I have no words to explain the feeling of suddenly being the only remaining direct offspring of Richard and Andrea Simon,” the “Anticipation” and “You’re So Vain” singer continued.

Simon’s brother, Peter, died in 2018.

“They touched everyone they knew and those of us they’ve left behind will be lucky and honored to carry their memories forward,” she added.

Meghan Trainor reveals what inspired her new song ‘Remind Me’ | CNN

    [ad_1]

    CNN
     —

Meghan Trainor sat down with CNN to discuss life after “All About That Bass,” her new album and the importance of self-love.

The American singer-songwriter joined CNN’s “Who’s Talking To Chris Wallace?” this week to discuss her fifth studio album, “Takin’ It Back,” which was released on Friday.

The album is full of upbeat pop songs like “Made You Look.” But throughout the album, Trainor also touches on difficult topics, like her shifting relationship with her body and self-esteem after becoming a mother.

“I noticed the first few songs were kind of heartbreaking. They were sad at first,” she said. “And I was like, no, I’m happier than I’ve ever been. Why am I sad?”

“Remind Me,” the 15th track on the album, started as a meditation on how “it’s really hard being covered in scars,” said Trainor. The musician welcomed the birth of her first child via Caesarean section in February 2021.

“And it’s me singing to my husband, because he tells me all the time, I’m pretty and I’m like, I feel like with the stretch marks and the C-section, I feel like I’ve been ripped apart. And it took me a while to like myself again and to be able to look at my body after all that scarring,” she said.

The album also touches on “mom guilt” and the difference between social media and reality, like in the song “Don’t I Make It Look Easy.”

“My first songs were like about being a mom and about like, don’t I make this look easy,” Trainor said. “I’m exhausted. And I’m a working mom and I have mom guilt. And I tried to make them relatable and put them in every song.”

Trainor has historically been a “melody queen,” starting each song with a melody, she says. But on this album, she focused more on the lyrics and message behind each tune.

“I would sit on my piano a lot before the songwriting session, I would do homework, and I would have an idea,” she said. “And, luckily, it worked every single time, but I was like, I’ll do a chorus and then I’ll let the songwriters come in and we’ll craft.”

Self-love is a recurring theme throughout the 16 songs on the album.

“It’s the hardest thing, and that’s why I write all these self love songs because I’m like, believe in yourself,” she said. “You’re amazing.”

Good American CEO Emma Grede Is Not Easily Distracted

Good American CEO Emma Grede launched the alongside partner and pal, in October 2016. What started as the largest denim launch in history (the brand famously sold $1 million worth of product in one day), has gone on to become a fully inclusive fashion line with hundreds of millions in sales.

    ABC, Christopher Willard

Grede is also involved in several other brands including being a founding partner of Skims, alongside , which just doubled its valuation to $3.2 billion, and Safely, a green cleaning brand.

But when she isn’t launching and running companies, she’s investing in entrepreneurs on ABC’s Shark Tank, now in its 14th season, and enjoying life at home in Los Angeles with her husband, Swedish entrepreneur Jens Grede, and their four children.

“Being on Shark Tank has made me one of the favorite moms at school!” Grede tells Entrepreneur. “I had no how many kids watch Shark Tank. My child said his friends think he’s lying that I’m on the show.”

Here, Grede talks to Entrepreneur about her life as a CEO and what we can expect on Shark Tank this season.

What made you want to bring your money to a public forum like Shark Tank?

When they first approached me, I was a little unsure about it. But it is important to me to support and founders of color, so it made sense to use the platform to shine a light on these entrepreneurs. We are seeing more on the show than ever before, and it’s been all-around super positive. The power of TV, right? We, as a brand, are so invested in digital and DTC [direct to consumer] that is it nice to see entrepreneurs shine on this medium. I’ve really enjoyed my interactions with the entrepreneurs and investing in women in the early stages of their .

What is your favorite part of being on the show?

Working with the entrepreneurs! It is so crazy, how you forget how hard it was in the beginning.

What can we expect from you this season?

Another fantastic look! No, seriously though, I went into Shark Tank with a clear mission. I was looking to invest in women and female-centric ideas that perhaps other investors don’t see as a [winner]. It is so hard to raise money, walk into a room with a female-centric idea, pitching a plus-sized customer to a bunch of dudes in suits in New York. How am I going to convince these people that have no idea of what the problem is to invest? I looked at my own journey and wondered how I can help these entrepreneurs.

What are you looking for when investing in entrepreneurs?

I’m very founder focused. There are a lot of people who have great ideas. There are only a few who can take an idea and turn it into a $100 million business.

As CEO of Good American, how many people do you manage?

I’ve just come out of my management meeting! I directly manage 12 people — and some need more management than others. Kidding aside, I have an incredible management team. I’m not a micromanager. I think it’s important to hire the best people and then get out of their way.

What are you focused on in the day-to-day?

When I think about my role, I’m focused on strategy and focused on product. And, of course, hiring. Hiring. Strategy. Product. Hire the right people and then don’t meddle. I am not skilled in negotiating film contracts, but I hire the right people who can.

Although the Kardashians have hundreds of millions of followers and basically invented “influencing” as a modern-day profession, they’re also tabloid fodder. How have you managed to navigate the outside noise and keep the focus on the brand?

Distractions will be inevitable in any business, but I’m not easily distracted. I focus on making our mission and purpose a reality every day. Making sure that stores take that full-size range. Making sure that everything we do is about reinforcing inclusivity and diversity. There will always be moments that are rattling to every founder, but you need to stay focused on your mission. Khloe can drive a customer to purchase something once. But people don’t come back to buy $150 jeans unless the product works. We don’t waver from our mission. We offer a best-in-class product. Kris, Kim, Khloe…yes, they are enormously famous women, but they are also business people. And they are in their businesses. They don’t just put their names on these brands. We speak daily.

When you first launched and knew that it was going to be fully inclusive and you were going to demand that retailers take the complete size range, did you get any negative feedback from industry vets or people warning you not to go that route?

There were so many naysayers. I didn’t go back on the mission, but I also wanted to be profitable. I’m a girl from East London, I needed to make money. I think what was so disappointing in the beginning was the lack of people understanding the need. Women at a certain end of the size spectrum were just being ignored. 67% of women in the U.S. are considered a “plus-size” population. I never wavered once from thinking that this was a viable business idea. We could have focused on being DTC, but we knew that the mix of DTC, wholesale, and retail was going to be the best experience for the customer. We were lucky to find great partners.

What’s next for Good American’s growth?

We are about to open our first-ever store in Century City [California]. It’s currently under construction and should be opening next year. I’m so excited for everyone to see how we can bring true inclusivity to [the store].

Taylor Swift unveiled her 10th studio album, “Midnights,” on Friday, October 21.

It’s her first original album in two years. The 11-time Grammy Award winner is currently in the midst of revisiting her early albums in a bid to regain ownership of the work she released under her former label Big Machine Records.

Born in 1989, Swift launched her country music career at age 16. Her debut self-titled album was released in 2006. She went on to become one of the most successful recording artists of all time — earning legions of loyal fans known as “Swifties.”

Her 2014 album, “1989,” was her first purely pop album. Known for her songwriting, she took on a folk-rock sound on her 2020 albums, “Folklore” and “Evermore.”

Swift has broken a number of records throughout her career. In 2021, she became the first woman to win the Grammy for album of the year three times. She was also the first woman to ever score three new number one albums in less than a year.

  • Taylor Swift’s ‘Midnights’ album is out. So, what’s the verdict? | CNN

Taylor Swift’s ‘Midnights’ album is out. So, what’s the verdict? | CNN

    [ad_1]

    CNN
     —

Taylor Swift is endorsing late nights with her first original album in two years.

The 11-time Grammy Award winner unveiled her 10th studio album, “Midnights,” on Friday, following a surprise announcement at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards.

Swift, who is currently in the midst of revisiting her early albums in a bid to regain ownership of the work she released under her former label Big Machine Records, has pivoted from the folk-rock sound of 2020’s “Folklore” and “Evermore” to something more mainstream.

“Midnights is a collage of intensity, highs and lows and ebbs and flows,” she told fans on social media following the release. “Life can be dark, starry, cloudy, terrifying, electrifying, hot, cold, romantic or lonely. Just like Midnights. Which is out now.”

As “Swifties” rushed to Spotify to listen to the record at midnight, the streaming giant experienced overwhelming traffic and users reported outages worldwide.

But despite the initial tech issues, the 13-track album, almost entirely written, produced and performed with Swift’s long-time collaborator Jack Antonoff, is already a hit with fans.

“Can’t stop listening Midnights. This entire Album is amazing! You’re so genius, @taylorswift13!” one fan wrote on Twitter.

Another said: “Taylor Swift mothered so hard with Midnights no one will ever come close to her level of prodigiousness. This woman is not just a talented writer but also a clever musician. I never doubted her.”

Music critics were just as enthusiastic about the album, though some noted its subdued tone.

Awarding “Midnights” a five-star rating, the Guardian’s Alexis Petridis describes the sound as “pop rich with self-loathing and stereotype-smashing” and “misty, atmospheric and tastefully subdued.”

He adds that: “Midnights delivers her firmly from what she called the ‘folklorian woods’ of her last two albums back to electronic pop.”

Petridis also noted that Swift’s much talked about Lana Del Rey collaboration, “Snow on the Beach,” is “beautifully done – a perfect gene-splice between their two musical styles with a gorgeous melody – but it’s a long way from a grandstanding summit between two pop icons: there’s a striking lightness of touch about it, a restrained melding of their voices.”

According to Rolling Stone writer Brittany Spanos, Swift’s new album “picks up where the pure pop triptych of 1989, Reputation, and Lover left off, a dazzling bath of synths complementing lyrics caught between a love story and a revenge plot.”

For LA Times pop critic Mikael Wood, the song-writing and vocal performances in “Midnights” carry the album.

“She’s playing with cadence and emphasizing the grain of her voice like never before … eventually you stop caring what’s drawn directly from Swift’s real life and what’s not,” he writes.

Giving “Midnights” 8 out of 10, website Clash Music’s Matthew Neale writes that the album “feels both voyeuristic in its exposition and brash in its execution.”

“Defined by dark nights of the soul and cast in the same bluish-purple hues, ‘Midnights’ offers little of revelatory purpose to those who have yet to succumb to Swift’s charms,” he explained. “For those already swayed by her craft, however, it may reasonably go on to be recognized as her best album to date.”

Henry Thomas reminisces about ‘E.T.’ as the movie turns 40 | CNN

    [ad_1]

    CNN
     —

As “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” celebrates its 40th anniversary, Henry Thomas, who starred as Elliott in the film, is reflecting on the movie and the fame that came with it.

Thomas spoke to CNN this week as an updated 4K Ultra HD version of the movie was released. It includes 45 minutes of new bonus footage of the Steven Spielberg directed classic.

Initially, Thomas said, he didn’t understand the little alien who came to live in Elliott’s house.

“I remember as a kid, you know, I was really into ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Indiana Jones,’ Thomas recalled. “I was given a script and I read it and I thought, there’s no laser fighting? There’s no starships, or battles, or fights?”

“But it works. It works somehow,” he said.

Until he actually saw E.T. on set, Thomas said he thought “this guy with a finger that can heal you” was a silly concept. That changed when production started, the actor said, because Spielberg made everything so believable.

“He was able to talk to you and make you feel like a peer and not feel as though you were being talked down to, which is important when you’re a kid,” Thomas said. “Especially when you’re a kid in an adult world, in an adult job.”

Although Thomas hasn’t watched “E.T.” in 20 years (he said he can’t watch himself on screen), he understands why the movie has endured.

“It speaks to our universal human compassion,” he said. “And we all have that. We all have the nurturer inside of us, right? So I think it speaks to that. It brings us back to being young.”

Thomas said he still gets recognized as the boy from “E.T.” but doesn’t mind. It was harder when he was a kid, a shock to the system when strangers across the world started saying hello.

    Henry Thomas in 2019.

“Suddenly, I wasn’t anonymous anymore. And that was a strange feeling as a boy,” Thomas recalled. “There was a book called ‘Never Talk to Strangers,’ and it was all about don’t talk to strangers, don’t talk to strange people that you don’t know, and unless your parents or your family know them, don’t talk to them, and then everybody’s talking to me.”

After he got over the initial shock of fame, he learned that “E.T.” and the film’s director, have been wonderful to be associated with.

“I imagine if it were a bad film that was universally reviled, we wouldn’t be talking about it now 40 years later,” Thomas said. “But also people, when they recognize me, they associate me with this great character, this kind of cool, rebellious young boy, and that’s a great thing.”

Drew Barrymore and Henry Thomas in

In addition to the never-before-seen footage of the movie, other bonus features in the new release include a look back on the movie, “40 Years of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” along with “TCM Classic Film Festival: An Evening With Steven Spielberg.” There are also interviews from the cast and crew and a talk with composer John Williams about the movie’s famous score. (TCM and CNN are both part of Warner Bros. Discovery.)

Thomas said he recognizes how special “E.T.” is.

“It is a rare and unique thing to be a part of, and I appreciate it so much more now because I know how rare it is to have a success in this industry,” he said. “Most films come and go in a couple of years and nobody remembers them. This one stuck around.”

    CNN
     —

Lana Del Rey says she was robbed of a backpack that contained her laptop, which had her new album on it.

The singer said along with the computer, multiple hard drives and a camera were also stolen.

“A few months ago, I parked my car on Melrose Place — actually Melrose Ave. in Los Angeles — and I stepped away for a minute,” she said on Instagram. “And the one time I left my backpack inside my car, someone broke all the windows and took it.”

Del Rey added that another project, a book she is working on, was stolen as well.

“I had to remotely wipe the computer that had my 200-page book for Simon and Schuster—which I didn’t have backed up on the cloud,” Del Rey said. And despite that, people are still able to remotely access my phone and leak our songs and personal photos. I loved the book that I lost with all of my heart and put a lot of passion into it.”

The artist asked her fans to not to listen to any leaked music, and said she will continue to work on new music.

“I just want to mention that despite all of this happening, I am confident in the record to come, despite so many safety factors at so many different levels. I really want to persist and make the best record I can,” she said. “Please don’t listen to the music if you hear it, because it’s not coming out yet,” she said.

Del Rey concluded: “Obviously I won’t ever leave anything in the car again, even if it’s just for a moment. But we’ve had the same issues at the house, and it is a constant thing. And although I’m so grateful to be able to share all of the good stuff, I just also want to share that it has been a challenge.”

  • Meet the (anti) heroes of ‘Black Adam’ | CNN

Meet the (anti) heroes of ‘Black Adam’ | CNN

    [ad_1]

    CNN
     —

Just when you thought you finally committed most of the names of the ever-growing Suicide Squad to memory, DC goes and casts a new crew of antiheroes in “Black Adam,” its latest bid for box office domination.

Meet the Justice Society of America (JSA), a crew of superheroes who want to tamp down, or at least better control, the titular antihero Black Adam. You won’t remember these folks from films past (save for one cameo by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson), but they’ve been comic book stalwarts for decades.

Before you see “Black Adam,” familiarize yourself with the new cast of morally ambiguous super-humans. From Doctor Fate to Adam himself, here are the fresh faces you’ll meet in “Black Adam.” (“Black Adam” is distributed by Warner Bros., which shares parent company Warner Bros. Discovery with CNN.)

Played by: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson

Powers: Super speed and strength, magic, flight, lightning bolts, prolonged life, among many others

Black Adam is the morally ambiguous predecessor of Shazam, the gangly teen-turned-adult superhero. Adam was born centuries ago as “Teth-Adam,” a regular guy who becomes the “champion” of a wizard named Shazam, who instills in him the power of several gods, according to DC. Unlike Shazam the superhero (a different guy from the wizard – yes, it’s confusing), Teth-Adam did not use his newfound powers for good. He’s exiled by the wizard who gave him his powers and given a new name that matches his corrupted heart – Black Adam.

We meet Adam when he returns from a 5,000-year-long imprisonment. He’s set on liberating his homeland, a fictional North African country called Kahndaq, Johnson told the New York Times. But Wonder Woman, he is not – Adam “straight-up murders people” to forward his cause, said Empire Magazine in its three-star review of the film. He believes he’s the “right person to lead humanity,” says DC, and sometimes that means making choices that prioritize the good of the many over the lives of the few.

    Played by: Pierce Brosnan

Powers: Sorcery, uber-intelligence, flight – the works!

Nerd by day and sorcerer by night, Kent Nelson is a “kindly academic” who evolves into a formidable hero when he wears the golden “Helmet of Fate,” which is also imbued with godlike powers, says DC. In an interview with the AV Club, Brosnan explained that the helmet is both a “curse and a blessing” that the character lives with because his father, an archaeologist, discovered the artifact.

Doctor Fate helped found the Justice Society, a superhero supergroup that, in the film, is tasked with tamping down Black Adam’s antiheroic antics. Onscreen, Brosnan-as-Fate is the seasoned veteran of the JSA, keeping the newbs in line while taking on Adam – but he’s got secrets of his own, too, Brosnan teased.

    Hawkman's costume is fittingly avian-inspired.

    Played by: Aldis Hodge

Powers: Flight, super strength, overall master of combat

Add another bird-themed superhero to your mental rolodex and meet Hodge’s Hawkman, a hero who flies with massive golden wings and dons a golden helmet complete with a golden bird beak – DC describes him as “a fierce warrior without equal.” Good luck, Adam! In the film, Hawkman leads the JSA to stop Adam but still leans on Doctor Fate for fatherly advice.

The character has “been through so much,” Hodge teased in an interview with Vanity Fair, and those experiences have influenced the colorful style in which he fights. Hawkman, a.k.a. Carter Hall, is also a foil to Adam, Hodge said, who both crave justice but have different, uncompromising ideas about how to achieve it. Ultimately, he said, they find a “mutual respect” within each other – two supers of impressive strength.

He’s also motivated by love – throughout his life in DC Comics, he’s been in a devoted relationship with, natch, Hawkgirl.

    Played by: Quintessa Swindell

    Powers: Controlling wind

It’s one thing to be gifted powers by an amulet or cursed artifact; it’s another to simply harness the elements. Meet Cyclone, a teenage hero whose mind can manipulate the air and weaponize extreme weather to fend off foes (she received her powers after being a test subject for nefarious scientists). Per DC, she brings a “social justice attitude” to the Justice Society.

Swindell, a nonbinary actor, has said that their character is influenced by ballet, and while Cyclone, a.k.a. Maxine Hunkel, is the newest addition to the JSA, she’s unafraid to embrace her truest self: “Very rarely have I seen a role that paints a young girl in a way that gives her the ability to live authentically and truthfully in her weirdness,” Swindell said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

    Played by: Noah Centineo

Powers: Growing into a giant at will and then shrinking back

Don’t call him Ant-Man: This is Atom Smasher, a young JSA recruit whose powers you’ll certainly recognize – he’s a “mass manipulator,” meaning he can turn into a Godzilla-sized version of himself – but without the size-changing tech. Atom Smasher is a “metahuman,” like Cyclone, and the process of growing huge is a painful one, Centineo told Syfy: His muscles “break and then form,” and then break and re-form again when he returns to his standard size.

He’s also a bit of a “nepotism baby”: His grandfather, “forced into villainy,” Centineo said, was the first to receive the powers Atom Smasher inherited, so even though he lacks the experience of his fellow JSA members, he “comes from this pedigree” that makes him a confident, if arrogant, addition to the group.

    CNN
     —

When it comes to all that drama surrounding being temporarily banned from a famous New York City restaurant, James Corden finds it all “so silly.”

In an interview with the New York Times to promote his forthcoming Amazon series “Mammals,” Corden commented on another patron at the restaurant where he was dining with the Times reporter having words with her server about not liking her eggs.

“Happens every day,” Corden said. “It’s happening in 55,000 restaurants as we speak. It’s always about eggs.”

“Can you imagine now, if we just blasted her on Twitter? Would that be fair?,” he added. “This is my point. It’s insane.”

Earlier this week, the late-night host was briefly “86’d” from Balthazar by its owner, Keith McNally, who posted on Instagram that Corden was “the most abusive customer to my Balthazar servers since the restaurant opened 25 years ago.”

One of the incidents he cited was Corden allegedly throwing a fit after “a little bit of egg white” ended up in an egg yolk omelette with gruyere cheese that his wife had ordered.

Soon after McNally posted that, Corden had called him and “apologized profusely,” according to the restauranteur, and all was resolved.

“I haven’t done anything wrong, on any level,” Corden told the Times, adding that he wouldn’t have canceled the interview over the awkwardness of having to discuss it.

“I was there. I get it,” he added.

“I feel so Zen about the whole thing. Because I think it’s so silly,” Corden said. “I just think it’s beneath all of us. It’s beneath you. It’s certainly beneath your publication.”

    CNN
     —

As Swifties around the world countdown to midnight and the release of Taylor Swift’s tenth album “Midnights,” she’s tried to keep her fans happy by dropping a few hints about her new music in recent days.

Among them, she has listed song writing credits attributed to actress and friend Zoë Kravitz and others, among them “Folklore” contributor William Bowery, who co-wrote “Sweet Nothing.”

Bowery, as any decent Swift observer can tell you, is a pseudonym chosen by her boyfriend, Joe Alwyn. He was credited under Bowery as co-writer on two “Folklore” tracks, “Betty” and “Exile,” causing speculation at the time about the writer’s true identity.

Swift put a stop the the guessing in a 2020 Disney+ documentary about the project.

“There’s been a lot of discussion about William Bowery and his identity, because it’s not a real person,” Swift said in the documentary.

“So William Bowery is Joe, as we know. And Joe plays piano beautifully and he’s always just playing and making things up and kind of creating things,” she added.

Fans will have wait a few more hours for “Sweet Nothing” to debut to hear the couple’s latest collaboration.

  • Caviar Kaspia Is Bringing Its Celebrity Glitz and $1,000 Baked Potatoes Stateside

Caviar Kaspia Is Bringing Its Celebrity Glitz and $1,000 Baked Potatoes Stateside

    [ad_1]

Like its signature dish, a twice-baked potato heaped with the good stuff, Caviar Kaspia feels at once cozy and decadent. Since 1953, sophisticates and gastronomes have been flocking to this institution’s Parisian mother ship, a clubby, wood-paneled second-story space above the Place de la Madeleine, not far from where Russian émigré Arcady Fixon began the business in 1927.

The fashion world’s high rollers have in particular embraced Caviar Kaspia. It’s the place to entertain tastefully but lavishly. (A spud runs between 98 and 1,083 euros, depending on the caviar. The rest of the menu features lots of smoked fishes, with an emphasis on salmon, and other seafood.)

During couture or ready-to-wear weeks, the place heaves with the likes of Giambattista Valli, Tom Ford, Betty Catroux, Naomi Campbell, Valentino, and Carine Roitfeld, ensconced on aquamarine mohair banquettes when they are not table-hopping, a Kaspia custom. Jay-Z and Beyoncé have been known to duck in when they’re in town. So did one actor currently in the news for his courtroom travails. On a sultry night last summer, the star and 30 members of his entourage arrived at 11:30 and sailed on till 3 a.m., according to a spy.

Alas, Caviar Kaspia CEO Ramon Mac-Crohon isn’t blabbing. “What happens at Caviar Kaspia stays at Caviar Kaspia. Discretion is our number one asset,” he says.

“We never say no, or at least we always try to find a way to please the customer.

“There are many, many stories,” he continues, teasingly. “If these walls could talk, they would have an endless amount of stories. Thank God they can’t.”

This month, the enchantment is coming to Manhattan, when the brand opens its first permanent New York location, in the Mark Hotel. Earlier this year, when a ground-floor space in the Upper East Side landmark (and Met Gala staging ground) became available, Izak Senbahar, a co-owner of the property, acted quickly. “Caviar Kaspia has always been one of my favorite restaurants in Paris,” he says. “So, I called Ramon.”

“That corner—77th and Madison—is the perfect location,” agrees Mac-Crohon, who has been spearheading a global expansion of the brand. This week, Caviar Kaspia Los Angeles opens in an open-air garden on Melrose Place. Doors are soon to open in Dubai, São Paolo, London, and St. Tropez.

“We keep the DNA, but we adapt the vibe and menu to every location. Madison Avenue will be very Kaspia but tailor-made for New York,” the CEO says.

As at the brand’s other locations, the bill of fare will include eggs with caviar, pasta with caviar, blinis with caviar, salmon, and more. (You can also dine with a clear conscience. None of the house staple comes from Russia or from endangered species; all Kaspia caviar is farm-raised.)

For the New York outpost’s interiors, Mac-Crohon and Senbahar have tapped French design titan Jacques Granges. Like the original, the ambiance in New York will be soft and old-world, with blue tablecloths, those mohair banquettes, and a copper bar. “It will be the sexiest Kaspia we’ve ever made,” Mac-Crohon promises.

“My goal is to add to the energy and vibrancy of upper Madison Avenue,” says Senbahar. “Caviar Kaspia will be a great addition. I’m sure our guests and neighbors will embrace it and wonder, ‘Why didn’t we have this before?’ ”

  • Jury finds Kevin Spacey not liable for battery | CNN

Jury finds Kevin Spacey not liable for battery | CNN

    [ad_1]

    CNN
     —

In a victory for Kevin Spacey, a New York jury on Thursday afternoon found him not liable for battery on allegations he picked up actor Anthony Rapp and briefly laid on top of him in a bed after a party in 1986.

Jurors deliberated for about an hour, and concluded Rapp did not prove that Spacey “touched a sexual or intimate part” of Rapp.

Judge Lewis Kaplan formally dismissed the case. Attorneys seated on either side of Spacey immediately put their hands on his back when the verdict was read.

“We are very grateful to the jury for seeing through these false allegations,” Jennifer Keller, one of Spacey’s attorneys, said later while leaving court. Spacey did not speak to reporters when he left.

Best known for his role in “Star Trek: Discovery,” Rapp had alleged that in 1986, Spacey, then 26, invited Rapp, then 14, to his Manhattan home where he picked Rapp up, laid him down on his bed, grabbed his buttocks and pressed his groin into Rapp’s body without his consent.

The judge dismissed Rapp’s claim of assault before the trial started and dismissed his claim of intentional infliction of emotional distress after Rapp’s attorneys rested his case, leaving the jury to decide only the battery claim. Under New York law, battery is touching another person, without their consent, in a way that a reasonable person would find offensive.

CNN Legal Analyst Joey Jackson saw Thursday’s verdict as a huge win for Spacey, one that demonstrates a jury can tune out the noise involving a celebrity’s alleged reported misdeeds in the Me Too movement and evaluate a case based on the facts presented in court.

The case was also problematic legally, with two counts tossed by the court – assault and intentional infliction of emotional distress – leaving the jury to consider only the battery claim, Jackson said.

“The jury clearly did not accept factual assertions made by Rapp, thereby not finding him credible,” Jackson added.

But the win was a “Pyrrhic victory” for Spacey given other charges that “hang over him, including criminal charges in the UK,” CNN Legal Analyst Paul Callan said.

“Spacey has now notched two victories in sex abuse charges against him including this case and the one previously dropped in Nantucket,” Callan said. “He, however, faces an uphill battle facing other accusers and more serious criminal charges in UK.”

Spacey was charged with four counts of sexual assault against three men and one count of causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent by Britain’s Crown Prosecuting Service in May. Spacey has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

In the Nantucket case, a man alleged Spacey groped him when he was an 18-year-old busboy at a restaurant. Spacey had pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors eventually dropped the criminal case against Spacey after the accuser pleaded the Fifth on the witness stand when being questioned about his missing cellphone and about whether he deleted text messages.

In his closing argument, Rapp’s attorney Richard Steigman suggested Spacey twisted his testimony at trial to suit his defense, pointing to Spacey’s 2017 apology to Rapp when he first came forward.

“Don’t listen to what I said in real time. I’m defending a lawsuit now. Listen to me now. I’ve got it straightened out,” Steigman said, mocking Spacey’s attempt to convince the jury he was coerced by publicists to give the statement he testified he now regrets.

Steigman called Spacey’s testimony rehearsed in comparison to the raw testimony given by his client.

“When you’re rehearsed, and a world class actor and you’re following the script and following the testimony of someone else, you can take that stand and be perfectly polished,” Steigman said. “When you’re merely coming to court coming forward and telling the truth of your experience, especially one like this that’s a little bit complicated.”

Steigman also batted down the defense argument that Rapp wanted to out Spacey as gay.

“The point of the story is not that Kevin Spacey is gay. It’s that he sexually abused him when he was 14. That’s what he’s sharing with people, he’s sharing his experience – nothing more, nothing less. Where’s the proof that he said to any media outlet, you know, Kevin Spacey is gay, you really should run with this?”

A courtroom sketch of Kevin Spacey being questioned by attorney Richard on Tuesday.

Keller, Spacey’s attorney, began her closing argument by addressing the shadow of the Me Too movement on the case, stating that Rapp “hitched his wagon” to the movement when he came forward.

“This isn’t a team sport where you’re either on the Me Too side, or you’re on the other side,” Keller told the jury. “This is a very different place. Our system requires evidence, proof, objective support for accusations provided to an impartial jury. However polarized as society may be today, it really should not have a place here.”

Keller suggested that Rapp cribbed his allegations against Spacey from a nearly identical scene from the Broadway show “Precious Sons,” which Rapp was performing in with Ed Harris in 1986 at the time of the alleged incident.

“We’re here because Mr. Rapp has falsely alleged abuse that never occurred at a party that was never held in a room that did not exist,” she said.

Spacey’s attorney concluded her remarks by asking the jury not to compromise their verdict by finding Spacey liable of battery but only awarding Rapp a single dollar in damages.

“You’re here to be judges of the facts. Did it happen? It didn’t happen. One penny is too much for something that did not happen,” Keller said.

Wendy Williams says she’s ‘back and better than ever’ | CNN

    [ad_1]

    CNN
     —

Wendy Williams has some irons in the fire.

The former daytime talk show host entered a wellness facility over the summer and now her representative says she is “home and healing.”

“Wendy is excited about the road ahead and looking forward to releasing her many projects,” Williams’ publicist Shawn Zanotti told Entertainment Tonight in a statement. Adding a sentiment from Williams, “Thank you to my fans for your love, support and many prayers, I am back and better than ever.”

Williams has been open about her previous struggle with addiction. In 2019, she told viewers she was living in a sober house after seeking treatment for drug use. She filed for divorce from her husband, Kevin Hunter, the same year.

She has also discussed her ongoing issues with Graves’ disease. The autoimmune disorder is something that caused Williams to leave her talk show on several occasions over the years, including an incident in which she fainted on live television during a Halloween episode in 2017.

Williams hosted “The Wendy Williams Show” from 2008 to 2021. In February it was announced that Sherri Shepard would be taking her time slot with her own talk show.
