CBD Leads to Nonseizure Improvements, AbbVie Launches 24-Hour Levodopa Infusion in EU, CNM-Au8 Improves Visual Function and Cognition – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

    WATCH TIME: 4 minutes

Welcome to this special edition of Neurology News Network. I’m Marco Meglio.

In a survey study of patients with either Lennox-Gastaut syndrome or Dravet syndrome, findings showed that treatment with add-on cannabidiol (CBD; Epidiolex) led to improvements in nonseizure outcomes, regardless of reduction in seizure frequency. Despite the limitations associated with a retrospective survey-based study design, investigators concluded that further evaluation of CBD on nonseizure outcomes in these patient populations is warranted. On nonseizure domains of alertness, cognition, and executive function, 85% of respondents reported improvements in at least 1 survey question. This continued across several other nonseizure-related domains of emotional functioning (82%), language and communication (79% in nonverbal patients and 74% in verbal), and activities of daily living (51%).

More than a year after it received approval by the European Commission, AbbVie has announced the European market launch of foslevodopa/foscarbidopa (Produodopa), the first and only 24-hour infusion of levodopa-based therapy for patients with advanced Parkinson disease (PD). Prior to the launch, the therapy had received authorization through the Decentralized Procedure in the third quarter of 2022, followed by a CE mark in November of 2023. Also referred to as ABBV-951, this formulation of levodopa and carbidopa prodrugs are delivered as a 24-h/day continuous subcutaneous infusion (CSCI) via…

Biden Regulators Request Marijuana Restrictions Be Eased – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

    [ad_1]

Top Biden administration officials recommended that marijuana be classified under the much less regulated Schedule III class of banned substances instead of its current Schedule I classification, in documents released to the public on Friday.

Rachel Levine, assistant secretary for health at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), sent a letter to Anne Milgram, administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), on Aug. 29, 2023, recommending that marijuana be moved from Schedule I, the harshest drug classification, to Schedule III under the Controlled Substance Act, according to the report. The report found that marijuana had the potential to be used for a number of different medical conditions, especially for easing pain, while also claiming that the substance’s potential for abuse and public health risk was lower than other scheduled drugs. (RELATED: Biden Admin Launches Probe Into Boeing After Alaska Airlines Inflight Incident)

“These evaluations demonstrate that there is consistency across databases, across substances, and over time that although abuse of marijuana produces clear evidence of a risk to public health, that risk is relatively lower than that posed by most other comparator drugs,” the report reads.

The report is the result of an executive order from President Joe Biden in October 2022, who asked HHS and the attorney general to review the classification of the substance, according to the report. The government has conducted four…

Old Orchard Beach leaders are considering lifting the cap on the number of retail marijuana businesses, taking the step months after a contentious referendum set strict limits on who could qualify for the town’s sole cannabis shop license and prompted a lawsuit against the town.

Discussions about whether to allow marijuana businesses at all – as well as where to allow them and how to choose them – have dragged on since before 2020, when residents voted to allow adult-use stores in Old Orchard Beach.

Last June, voters decided to limit any potential cannabis store to 1,000 square feet of retail space. In September, the town received three applications for the license. The town had received previous applications and opened them in March, but they were scrapped after one applicant claimed the town changed the rules to favor his competitor and filed a lawsuit to stop the process until after the June vote.

The licensing process has been mired in uncertainty since then.

In the latest application process, Theory Wellness, was chosen. But the company is still working to secure final approval to open a store on Ocean Park Road. As that moves forward, town councilors say they’re open to considering removing the cap and eliminating the required 1,000-foot buffer between marijuana…

  • Vendors relieve themselves in the open in Bulawayo CBD – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

Vendors relieve themselves in the open in Bulawayo CBD – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

    [ad_1]

THE Bulawayo City Council (BCC) has expressed concern over the increasing practice of open defecation by vendors in the central business district (CBD) particularly in the streets and sanitary lanes.

According to the latest council minutes, the local authority said the situation is particularly alarming in the wake of the nation’s ongoing battle against a cholera outbreak.

Open defecation refers to the human practice of defecating in fields, forests, bushes, bodies of water or other open spaces.

It is against water and sanitisation ideals that the Government is aiming to achieve as it gears toward Vision 2030.

People may choose fields, bushes, forests, ditches, streets, canals or other open spaces for defecation.

They do so either because they do not have a toilet readily accessible or due to traditional cultural practices.

“A complaint was received concerning vendors in the CBD Fifth Avenue area who were practicing open defecation and bathing in the sanitary lanes. An inspection of the sanitary lanes was done and heaps of faeces were seen in the sanitary lanes. The area was smelly and flies had become a nuisance,” the minutes read in part.

“Some of the vendors were found sorting their wares (food) in the sanitary lanes. This was a worrying situation in view of the fact that the country was struggling with a cholera outbreak and the vendors who were fouling the area were coming from all over the country which exposed…

Police confirmed Queensland Urban Utilities and Brisbane City Council, which manage the city’s water network, rushed to urgently determine where the water pipe had broken.

QUU later clarified water was flooding from a burst water pipe on George Street near the Elizabeth Street intersection.

A spokeswoman said it was likely some properties would be without water for several hours until the water pipe was repaired.

“Our crews will work as quickly as possible to repair the pipe this evening,” she said.

“Some properties are likely to be without water while repairs are underway and we apologise for any inconvenience.”

The ground-floor restaurant at the Oaks Hotel had already been significantly water-damaged, police said.

  • Why Vapes Don't Have The Weed Smell

Why Vapes Don't Have The Weed Smell

    [ad_1]

Flower is still popular, but so is vaping. One reason is it more discreet due to the lack of smell

Sometimes you can tell when someone is using weed, and sometimes you can’t.  As more states go legal and it is become mainstream in Canada, Europe and the US, how people consume is changing. Millennials and Gen Z’s are upending how people consume.  Flower is trending to older and more traditional users.  Vaping and gummies have become the go-to for the younger set.  It is more discreet and easier to use to transport and easily use in public.  This has lead some to ask why vapes don’t have the weed smell.

Why vaping doesn’t smell like marijuana is in the science of how each method delivers a high. Through a process called decarboxylation, heat applied to raw flower alters the precursor tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) into the psychoactive tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). But raw flower also contains many other organic compounds, many of which, like terpenes, are also altered during combustion and responsible for burnt marijuana’s distinctive odor.

RELATED: The Benefits And Potential Downsides Of Vaping, According To Research

Vaporizing cannabis oil works a little differently. Vaporizers heat up oils and concentrates to a temperature that converts THCA to THC without burning it. Flower vapes also designed to heat up buds only enough to initiate the chemistry that makes the high happen.

For as stealth as vaping is, it is not without some drawbacks. Cannabis oils and concentrates tend to be produced for maximum THC concentration, oftentimes by refining and then distilling inexpensive weed trim. Marijuana flowers have hundreds of compounds besides THC that work together to produce a high unique to smoking flower. This however is changing as concentrate producers are creating “full spectrum” oils that include terpenes,  as well as cannabinoids besides THC, such as CBD.

RELATED: The Most Popular Marijuana Flavors

Another drawback are counterfeit vape cartridges and devices. Vape batteries contain batteries that can explode or cause a fire if it’s left in a high temperature area, like a locked car, or it’s exposed to air or water. Some malfunction due to poor quality. Counterfeit cartridges can contain harmful chemicals, or little to no cannabis in it. Cheaply made carts can also malfunction or leak, making whatever oil is left wasted and unusable.

Being able to conveniently and discreetly get high with a vape is great, made all the better, consistent, and trouble-free when manufacturer’s instructions are followed and you consume responsibility.

Minnesota Marijuana Regulators Want Input On Packaging, Tracking And Verification Rules – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

    [ad_1]

Minnesota’s Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) has opened a fourth survey seeking public input on how the state’s forthcoming commercial marijuana market should function, asking for opinions around packaging and labeling as well as the state’s system for cannabis tracking, inventory and verification.

Already the agency has solicited input on issues such as cultivation, processing and manufacturing; pesticides, fertilizers and environmental controls; and retail cannabis operations and sanitary standards.

OCM was initially planning to circulate a total of five surveys on marijuana consumer and industry topics, with the aim of informing rulemaking under the state’s legalization law enacted last year. But regulators recently announced the addition of sixth and seventh surveys, which will extend into February. The remaining surveys focus on business licensing and social equity, laboratory standards and edible products as well as medical cannabis and the patient registry program.

The deadline for the current survey, which opened late last month, is Friday, January 12.

As in past surveys, questions are mostly open-ended, such as “What opportunities exist for your selected area of interest?” and “What is most important for the rulemaking body to know and understand about this area?” The form allows additional space for general feedback. Providing contact information is voluntary. The survey also has a section for respondents to insert links to reference…

These remedies may provide holistic relief for pet anxiety, joint discomfort, skin irritations, and digestive issues. Immune Response and CBD – LA Weekly – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

    [ad_1]

CBD oil is such a new and hot-button item that its hard to avoid hyperbole, hope, or outright wishful thinking when it comes to its potential effects and uses. While the pandemic fueled claims of “immune-boosting” properties, or even antioxidant-like protections, frankly, at this point, we just don’t know.

This is a new and rising field, and the research is still developing. Right now we don’t have the full understanding we hope to have down the line, but for those interested in the benefits of CBD for their immune health its important to keep abreast of this information.

The simple truth is that right now we can’t say with certainty what effects CBD has on the immune system. We know it likely does interact, and we have some information on it, but again, this body of research is growing and its conclusions are still years away.

There are trends though, and current research is suggesting that CBD interacts with the immune system as a natural immunosuppressant. So maybe it’s not a silver-bullet against infections, or the next antioxidant, this is still great news for those affected by autoimmune conditions.

The research seems to indicate that CBD possesses anti-inflammatory effects that can reduce the severity of immune system responses. This suggests potential use as an all-natural tool to help manage symptoms in patients with a variety of immune conditions, including lupus, multiple sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Again, though this information hints at…

Despite the rumours, the CBD is not buying land in Falcon and Askari V – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

    [ad_1]

LAHORE: Contrary to speculations, Lahore’s Central Business District (CBD) is not in the process of acquiring land from the closeby private housing societies.

Rumours had been afloat that the CBD’s administration was planning on acquiring land from Askari V Housing Society and Falcon Complex of Air Force Officers Housing Scheme (AFOHS). Contrary to circulating speculations in the real estate market, the authority clarified its operational procedures, emphasising that it does not engage in direct land acquisitions.

    The CBD project

The CBD was launched by the Punjab Government last year to develop commercial real-estate in Punjab. The ethos behind the project was to use unused government land to develop a district within Lahore where commercial and residential real estate projects could be developed.

A major avenue for the project was dead in the centre of Lahore, where the CBD knocked down the old Walton Airport (the area located between the entrance towards Model Town and the Falcon Enclave) and handed it over to real estate developers to make both commercial and residential high-rise real estate.

This is important. The CBD in all of its phases is only supposed to use land that the government already owns. Which is why the idea that they would be acquiringh Askari V land or Falcon Complex land would not add up legally.

    So why the rumours?

Askari V and Falcon Complex are right next to CBD’s main project. Both are army initiatives and privately owned…
