As the Minnesota Legislature considers legalizing cannabis, following 21 states and the District of Columbia, I urge lawmakers to consider safeguards for immigrants who are not yet U.S. citizens (not just undocumented Minnesotans). 

What many people do not know is that while states are decriminalizing cannabis — in part to redress racist failures of the War on Drugs — cannabis will continue to be a Schedule 1 drug under federal law. The possession, giving of, selling, cultivating, importing or exporting of marijuana continue to be federal offenses. Such designation impacts the rights of immigrants who are not U.S. citizens.

Immigrants who are not yet U.S. citizens and live in states that decriminalize cannabis may assume that they can partake just like all other adults. The assumption, which I have heard many times, is that since cannabis is legal, why can’t I use it recreationally, buy it, produce it, etc.? But for non-U.S. citizens, the consequences could be devastating.

For example: If you are undocumented in Minnesota and your U.S. spouse sponsors you for permanent residency (aka a green card), you generally have to return to your home country to get approved. Once outside the U.S., you take a required medical exam. If you tell the physician that because you were stressed out with the whole green card process, you smoked a little bit, the consular officer interviewing you and reviewing your documentation could deny your green card. While there are currently no requests or plans to sell, lease or gift the car park, council is getting on the front foot to gather feedback from residents and business owners in the area.

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — In Brownsville, two men were taken into custody after 112 pounds of marijuana were seized. That’s according to county authorities. 

Jesus Ledezma, 21; and Saul Saldana, 18; were arrested for possession of marijuana and engaging in organized crime, according to a release from Cameron County Sheriff Eric Garza.

On Feb. 18, Cameron County deputies along with Border Patrol and the U.S. National Guard apprehended three men caught crossing through the Rio Grande with large bundles, the release stated.

“After crossing, the three male suspects were approached, two of the suspects were apprehended immediately and third one fled the scene,” Sheriff Garza says. 

The third man was later apprehended with the help of a K-9.

Two of the men were identified as Saldana and Ledezma, the third man currently remains in Border Patrol custody, according to the release.

An end-of-year bounce back from Covid-19 restrictions and cost rises helped drive a record retail electronic spend of $711 million in central Hamilton last year.

But two Republican senators, Mike Regan, of York County and Dan Laughlin, of Erie, have come out in favor of legalization, meaning it could pass the Senate if Democrats stand firm and one more Republican favors legalization.

Regan noted that his support for the legislation may have surprised some given his two decades in law enforcement.

The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) seized more than P300,000 worth of alleged shabu and marijuana in six separate buy-bust operations in the city on Friday, Feb. 17, and Saturday, Feb. 18.

The anti-illegal drug operations was launched by members of different QCPD stations who also apprehended 12 drug peddlers.

QCPD Novaliches Station (PS 4), in coordination with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency – National Capital Region (PDEA-NCR), arrested Alvin Reyes, 21, of Barangay Gulod, Novaliches after he yielded around two kilograms of suspected marijuana worth P240,000 on Saturday.

The buy-bust operation against Reyes was launched by the PS 4 operatives on San Ignacio St., Villareal, in Brgy. Gulod at around 2 a.m. on Saturday.

Police also confiscated an eco bag, a cellular phone, and the buy-bust money from Reyes.

Meanwhile, the police stations in Anonas, Project 4, Kamuning, Holy Spirit and Project 6 also recovered P73,440 worth of alleged shabu and collared 11 suspects on Friday and Saturday.

All the suspects will be charged for violation of Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, police said.

Study findings suggest specific targets for future drugs.

A previously unknown way in which cannabidiol (CBD), a substance found in cannabis, reduces seizures in many treatment-resistant forms of pediatric epilepsy has been revealed by a new scientific study.  

Led by researchers at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, the study found that CBD blocked signals carried by a molecule called lysophosphatidylinositol (LPI). Found in brain cells called neurons, LPI is thought to amplify nerve signals as part of normal function, but can be hijacked by disease to promote seizures.

Published online on February 13 in the journal Neuron, the work confirmed a previous finding that CBD blocks the ability of LPI to amplify nerve signals in a brain region called the hippocampus. The current findings argue for the first time that LPI also weakens signals that counter seizures, further explaining the value of CBD treatment.
