WASHINGTON COUNTY, Wis. (WFRV) – During Wednesday’s snowstorm, a driver in southeast Wisconsin called for help after going into a ditch but was later arrested after deputies found nearly 1.5 pounds of weed in the vehicle.

According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, a 27-year-old Milwaukee man, who was on felony parole for firearms and drug charges, called the sheriff’s office around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old reported the incident after accidentally driving into the ditch on US Highway 45 near Western Avenue.

Calls like this were common [on Wednesday] as the sheriff’s office handled approximately 80 traffic-related calls during the recent snow event. This call was different.

The first responding deputy reportedly smelled the “strong odor of burnt marijuana” coming from the vehicle.

The release states that a search of the vehicle resulted in deputies finding nearly a pound and a half of marijuana, cocaine, multiple phones, a scale, and a large amount of cash.

He was arrested for parole violations and drug charges and is currently in custody at the Washington County Jail.

The Overby Center for Southern Journalism and Politics organized a presentation and a panel of experts called “Pot Goes Public” to discuss and answer questions about the legalization of medical marijuana in Mississippi on Feb. 22 in the Overby Center auditorium. 

Panelists included founder of Mississippi Cannabis Patients Alliance Angie Calhoun, University of Mississippi Chief of Police Daniel Sanford, and the Mississippi Department of Health State Health Officer Daniel Edney. 

Violet Jira, a junior philosophy and journalism double major and managing editor for The Daily Mississippian, facilitated the panel of experts and asked questions throughout the event.

Charles Mitchell, an Overby Freshman Fellow and associate professor of journalism at the University of Mississippi, hosted the event. 

“There’s a lot of misinformation out there,” Mitchell said. “One of the functions of a journalism center such as this is to get the people who are in the best position to separate fact from myth and give that information to the public.”

Trenton’s Administrative Committee Tuesday evening reviewed ordinances from other communities governing marijuana smoking or consumption in public places. Suggestions were made for the city attorney and police chief to recommend wording that amends a Trenton ordinance regarding the usage of medical marijuana to include the adult-use recreational marijuana and marijuana-infused products.

Councilman Marvin Humphreys believes the Trenton ordinance should mirror language that’s already in state law with some tweaking. The ordinance is expected to offer a broad definition of public places. Some think public view means any location, outside a residence, as people are free to move about. There also was discussion to have public places also include drivers and passengers of motor vehicles.

It was indicated there could be some allowance for businesses to have the option to designate a marijuana usage area like some do that allow cigarette smoking but only in specific rooms.

Discussion is expected to continue at future meetings of the Trenton Administrative Committee and/or the Trenton City Council as a proposed ordinance will be drafted for review.

A visitor to California in the late 1990s will have been struck by the sight of dispensaries openly selling CBD products. In recognition of its medical benefits, the state passed a law in 1996 legalising cannabis, and a major industry quickly developed: oils, capsules, drinks and other products containing CBD – a non-addictive, non-psychoactive molecules found in the hemp plant – soon lined the shelves of cafes and home kitchens, and dispensaries proliferated.
