  • “Dagger-blow to the whole of the UK industry” as FSA slashes CBD daily limit – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

“Dagger-blow to the whole of the UK industry” as FSA slashes CBD daily limit – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

The authority says this is based on new evidence from the industry and updated advice from its independent scientific committee – the Advisory Committee on Novel Foods Processes (ACNFP) and the Committee on Toxicity (cot) published today.

It states the updated advice, which amounts to 4-5 drops of 5% CBD oil a day, has been based on the average lifetime exposure to food products containing CBD.

To give a picture of the impact of this recommendation, most CBD drinks on the market contain at least 12.5mg of CBD per can.

Keeping advice vague in terms of what brands and retailers should do next, the FSA states: “Some products available on the market will have a higher dose of CBD per serving than 10mg a day, therefore consumers should check labels and consider their daily intake in light of this updated advice.”

It adds: “We encourage consumers to monitor their daily consumption of CBD by checking the CBD content of the product and consider if they wish to change it in light of this updated advice.”

The authority says it will update advice “if new evidence indicates a change is needed”.

    Response to “one poor study”

Marc Burbidge, founder of the premium white label CBD products manufacturer B3 Labs, said the news would come as a huge shock to the industry and would primarily cause concern over reaction from retailers.

His only explanation for this sudden change of tact from the FSA could be their reliance on ‘bad data’ coming from toxicity results from full spectrum…

  • Floyd Landis discusses how regularity uncertainty threatens the global CBD industry – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

Floyd Landis discusses how regularity uncertainty threatens the global CBD industry – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

The American was infamously stripped of his 2006 Tour de France win after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs. Disgrace, downfall and eventually redemption all ensued, and he went on to launch Floyd’s of Leadville in 2016, which sells CBD products such as gummies, coffee, drink mixes and tonics.

CBD is oil or powder derived from the cannabis plant that can be added as an ingredient in food and beverages. It doesn’t contain tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive ingredient found in marijuana that produces a ‘high’. Landis discovered it after life as a professional athlete left him with ‘numerous lingering painful injuries’. CBD, he explained, allowed him a route away from opioids and other addictive drugs that in the past doctors were quick to prescribe. He then created Colorado-based Floyd’s of Leadville to share with the world his experience of the advantages of CBD.

“For me it’s been beneficial for anxiety and to some extent pain as well,” he told FoodNavigator.

But the current lack of hard evidence to back up the many perceived health benefits is one bottleneck for the CBD industry. Studies continue to show it may prove to be an option for, among other things, managing anxiety, insomnia, inflammation, arthritis, and even HIV symptoms. But these studies are as yet inconclusive. With the exception of Epidiolex – the first and only prescription CBD medicine approved by the FDA in the US which is used to treat seizures – no…

  • Goodrays supplement startup launches CBD drinks, gummies and oils for the masses – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

Goodrays supplement startup launches CBD drinks, gummies and oils for the masses – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

Launched in 2020, the start-up has expanded from their original oils and gummies to launch their leading drinks range into top UK retailers last year.

Discussing the wide ranging consumption opportunities for CBD, Eoin Keenan, the brand’s co-founder and CEO, tells NutraIngredients: “We are offering different formats that work within different consumer occasions. We have something for somebody that feels anxious first thing in the morning before work, something for stress and claustrophobia when going on the tube in between meetings, something for unwinding and relaxing after work…”

He says the demand for healthy alternatives to modulate cognition is growing, in-line with the increasingly holistic outlook on health, as consumers want to ‘optimise’ health, not just treat problems.

“People are looking to optimise… they’re not looking for a solution. They don’t expect this to make everything better, but they are looking at nutrition in the mindset of ‘how will this improve my day by 5 to 10%,” he highlights.

The company offers CBD gummies, containing 25mg of CBD in flavours ranging from lemon-lime to mango. In addition, their drinks contain 30mg of CBD with added vitamin D in flavours such as elderflower and yuzu, as well as raspberry and guava.

Keenan says the formats and quantities of CBD used are determined based on the available science, stressing the responsibility of CBD companies to retain consumer trust and share the evidence-backed benefits of CBD,…
