Important Science Alert! NASA Just Sent a Cat Video From Space!
NASA recently sent a very important message 19 million miles into space. This message traveled 80 times the distance between Earth and the moon and served as a test of just how far current technology can send communication into space. The content of this epic space-traveling message: Taters the cat.
Taters, an orange tabby, is the pet of an employee at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at Caltech. A video clip of Taters chasing a laser pointer was uploaded onto a spacecraft that was then launched into space from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. There was no actual travel for the galaxy’s newest feline celebrity.
The goal of this project was to experiment with and expand the reach of video technology that is currently utilized in satellites that orbit the Earth and moon. Taters’ adventures chasing the laser pointer are groundbreaking because no video image has ever been sent this far across deep space. The video was transmitted from the Psyche spacecraft which is currently on a mission to examine the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. The transmission of the video was completed in just 101 seconds.
And this is just the beginning of Taters’ deep space adventures. NASA plans to rebroadcast this video weekly, attempting greater and greater lengths of transmission. The ability to quickly relay scientific information this far is a necessary step for NASA as they edge closer to one of their long-term goals—sending a human to Mars.
The NASA rover Perseverance landed on Mars in 2021 and has been busy at work capturing images. The rover has just, on its 1000th day on Mars, collected samples from enormous craters that scientists posit were previously lakes. The specimens collected include silica, phosphate, and carbonate—all of which suggest these ancient lakes were habitable for living creatures.
Taters is not the first cat to travel into space, but she is the first cat to do so virtually and humanely. In 1963, the French sent a cat into space, specifically to monitor the cerebral activity and health impact of space travel. The cat, Félicette, was a stray. She survived her space travel but was later euthanized so scientists could study her brain.
Happily, Taters will not be subjected to such cruelty. And if intelligent life out there anywhere happens to catch a glimpse of the video of Taters, they will be onto a very essential feature of life on Earth—we love our cat videos. Estimates suggest we watch about 26 billion videos of them a year!

Abused cat with broken back treated like “just a toy” recovers in shelter
For some people, animals are family members, things of beauty and even preferable to humans. But to others, they are a nuisance or not thought of at all.
Animal cruelty and neglect are a concerning, regular occurrence throughout the world, and not all are as lucky as Kiri the cat. She was rescued by Sandra Mouawad, who runs the Paws Crossed rescue center in Lebanon.
“Kiri used to live in Bekaa in Lebanon, where she and some other cats would get fed and cared for by the neighbors,” Mouawad told Newsweek. “As I was told, some of the neighbors didn’t care for cats, and one day one of the children was seen throwing stones at her and apparently laughing as if she was just a toy.”
Mouawad said Kiri’s back was broken in half.
In a video posted to the rescue center’s TikTok account, @pawscrossedle, with over 1.8 million views, Kiri, a fluffy ginger and white cat, can be seen dragging her immobile back legs across the ground. Mouawad shared pictures of Kiri’s broken back and said surgery will give her a 60 percent chance of walking again.
“A fellow rescuer asked me if I can help her find someone to help this cat because she is overwhelmed and can’t pay $1,500 for MRI and surgery,” Mouawad said. “I didn’t want to take a new case because the shelter is full, but I ended up taking her in.”
After CT scans, surgery, physiotherapy ultrasound, electrotherapy and “a lot of love,” Kiri is recovering well.
While she now dedicates her life to rescuing animals, Mouawad wasn’t always an animal person.
“I was never overly fond of animals at first,” she said, “but after we adopted our first family dog I began to truly understand the pure love they can bring to your heart, and I couldn’t witness so much hate towards them and do nothing.”
Animal welfare is arguably not high on many people’s list of priorities in Lebanon.
“Due to the combined impact of the economic crisis, the absence of the government, the Covid-19 pandemic and the explosion that happened in Beirut in August 2020, pet owners are struggling more and more to afford to keep their pets while rescue organizations in Lebanon are facing a steep increase of pets being abandoned,” writes Florence Massena in The New Arab.
Kiri, who suffered a broken back, was rescued by Sandra Mouawad in Lebanon.
Sandra Mouawad
Similarly, in some countries dealing with economic and social unrest, animal welfare is considered a Western indulgence.
“There’s so much ignorance here,” said Mouawad. “People don’t think that cats and dogs have feelings, and there are very few consequences for the evil actions against them here. New laws are coming to in to protect them, but people don’t take it seriously. They hit and run, poison and abuse when they’ve had enough of them or ended up with a breed they can’t handle, it’s crazy.”
Users on TikTok were full of support for Mouawad and Kiri.
“Why can’t people teach their kids to be KIND to animals. They are the best things on this earth,” said one user.
Another said: “How awful I’m so sorry I’m gonna interact as many times as I can to help.”

Internet laughs at cat who loves flushing to watch “swirly toilet water”
Cats usually avoid water like it’s going out of fashion, ready to give you a warning hiss if even a drop splashes on their coats. One cat, however, has developed an obsession with water, or rather watching it.
In a video posted to Reddit with over 32,500 views, a black cat can be seen removing a book that was covering the toilet flusher, flushing the toilet, and then jumping down to put his paws on the seat to get a closer look at the swirling water.
“She likes watching the swirly toilet water, not even hiding the flusher can stop her,” reads the caption.
Despite a known dislike of water, many cat owners report that their felines have a strange obsession with their bathroom.
“To some cats, the toilet is the equivalent of a mouth-watering, bottomless drinking fountain,” write PetHelpful, “It beckons to their incomparable ability to repurpose just about anything (drapes as trapezes, fuzz as food, and antique sofas as scratching posts). It also hones their superb aptitude for balancing on extremely smooth surfaces and contorting themselves into advanced-level yoga poses.”
The swirling water might trigger a cat’s instinct to focus on movement, “either for enjoyment or for hunting,” says PetHelpful, “They may also notice reflections in the water and, other than admiring their dazzling image in them, may perceive them as something to play with.”
It could also be a wild, instinctive obsession.
“In the wild, cats were hardwired to interpret running water as safer than stagnant or still water,” they add, “The streaming, swirling sound of toilet water may sound like a river or creek to your cat and trigger her primal side.”
Another reason cats may love coming into the bathroom with you is because when you’re in there alone, it’s a closed door the contents of which your cat is obsessed with exploring.

Similarly, once they’ve followed you in there, you’re trapped and temporarily staying in one place, so it’s the perfect time to bug you for attention.
“The cat seems to know you are ‘trapped’ in there for at least a few minutes and that it’ll be easy to get your attention,” reports The Spruce Pets, “It also may be that your cat can tell you are not distracted by the television, a book, work, or some other activity. You are there doing nothing too serious, able to return the love and attention they give you.”
“One of my cats is like this, but she hasn’t figured out the flushing handle yet. She will always follow me into the bathroom just to see the toilet flush,” commented one user. “Wouldn’t that qualify as tool use? That sounds like a really smart cat!” said another.

Pet owners love their dogs more than their cats, study says
Pet owners love their dogs more than their cats, a study has found. But it depends on where you live.
Although previous studies have already suggested this finding, scientists from the University of Copenhagen wanted to dive more deeply into whether cultural factors altered the results. Their findings are published in the journal Frontiers in Veterinary Science.
“We and others have found that people are willing to spend much less on their cats than on their dogs,” professor Peter Sandøe of the University of Copenhagen, the study’s first author, said in a press release detailing the findings. “We wanted to find out whether cats could eventually end up having the same high status as dogs do today.”
In the survey across Denmark, Austria and the United Kingdom, 844 dog owners, 872 cat owners and 401 people who owned both dogs and cats were asked questions about their pets.
Overall, the participants had higher attachment scores for dogs than for cats. Owners were more likely to insure their dogs, expect more treatment options for their dogs and paid to get this treatment.
However, the results differed dramatically across countries. For example, the United Kingdom’s results were in favor of dogs, although only slightly. Australia and Denmark had a very clear preference for the canines.
“While people care more about their dogs than their cats in all countries, the degree of difference varied dramatically between countries,” Sandøe said.
He continued: “It doesn’t therefore seem to be a universal phenomenon that people care much less about their cats than their dogs. We suggest instead that the difference is likely to depend on cultural factors, including whether the animals spend a lot of time with their owners in the home.”
The difference between countries may be due to cultural differences and attitudes toward pets, the study suggested.
This may be the result of the country’s history with rural animals and how often they interacted with people. These factors may have influenced societal attitudes toward pets in modern times.
A greater emotional attachment to dogs was highest in Denmark. The Danes were also less likely to buy insurance for their cats, compared with their dogs.
“There seems to be no natural limit to how much people will end up caring about their cats compared to their dogs,” Sandøe said. “The British are often portrayed as a nation of cat lovers, which is certainly confirmed by our study. The Danes have a long way to go, but they may eventually get there.”

Pet owners tend to put themselves into one of two categories: Are you a cat person or a dog person? The preference tends to come from the animal’s personality traits.
However, cats are certainly more aloof than their canine counterparts. Dogs are known for being more attached to their owners, while cats can seem more independent. This could also influence an owner’s attitudes toward the pet, according to the study.
“Our study only looks at three countries located in Central and Western Europe,” professor Clare Palmer of Texas A&M University, a co-author of the paper, said in the press release.
“It raises intriguing questions regarding what comparative studies of other countries might find,” she went on. “Perhaps there are countries where the level of care for and attachment to cats is, in fact, higher than dogs?”

Biden administration waives 26 federal laws to allow border wall construction
McALLEN, Texas — The Biden administration announced it waived 26 federal laws in South Texas to allow border wall construction on Wednesday, marking the administration’s first use of a sweeping executive power employed often during the Trump presidency.
The Department of Homeland Security posted the announcement on the U.S. Federal Registry with few details outlining the construction in Starr County, Texas, which is part of a busy Border Patrol sector seeing “high illegal entry.” According to government data, about 245,000 illegal entries have been recorded so far this fiscal year in the Rio Grande Valley Sector which contains 21 counties.
“There is presently an acute and immediate need to construct physical barriers and roads in the vicinity of the border of the United States in order to prevent unlawful entries into the United States in the project areas,” Alejandro Mayorkas, the DHS secretary, stated in the notice.
The Clean Air Act, Safe Drinking Water Act and Endangered Species Act were some of the federal laws waived by DHS to make way for construction that will use funds from a congressional appropriation in 2019 for border wall construction. The waivers avoid time-consuming reviews and lawsuits challenging violation of environmental laws.
Starr County’s hilly ranchlands, sitting between Zapata and McAllen, Texas, is home to about 65,000 residents sparsely populating about 1,200 square miles (3,108 square kilometers) that form part of the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge.
Although no maps were provided in the announcement, CBP announced the project in June and began gathering public comments in August when it shared a map of the additional construction that can add up to 20 miles (32 kilometers) to the existing border barrier system in the area. Starr County Judge Eloy Vera said it will start south of the Falcon Dam and go past Salineño, Texas.
“The other concern that we have is that area is highly erosive. There’s a lot of arroyos,” Eloy Vera, the county judge said, pointing out the creeks cutting through the ranchland and leading into the river.
Concern is shared with environmental advocates who say structures will run through public lands, habitats of endangered plants and species like the Ocelot, a spotted wild cat.
“A plan to build a wall through will bulldoze an impermeable barrier straight through the heart of that habitat. It will stop wildlife migrations dead in their tracks. It will destroy a huge amount of wildlife refuge land. And it’s a horrific step backwards for the borderlands,” Laiken Jordahl, a southwest conservation advocate for the Center for Biological Diversity, said Wednesday afternoon.
During the Trump administration, about 450 miles (724 kilometers) of barriers were built along the southwest border between 2017 and January 2021. Texas Governor Greg Abbott renewed those efforts after the Biden administration halted them at the start of his presidency.
The DHS decision on Wednesday contrasts the Biden administration’s posturing when a proclamation to end the construction on Jan. 20, 2021, stated, “building a massive wall that spans the entire southern border is not a serious policy solution.”
In a statement Wednesday, CBP said the project is consistent with that 2021 proclamation. “Congress appropriated fiscal year 2019 funds for the construction of border barrier in the Rio Grande Valley, and DHS is required to use those funds for their appropriated purpose,” the statement said. “CBP remains committed to protecting the nation’s cultural and natural resources and will implement sound environmental practices as part of the project covered by this waiver.”
The announcement prompted political debate by the Democratic administration facing an increase of migrants entering through the southern border in recent months, including thousands who entered the U.S. through Eagle Pass at the end of September.
“A border wall is a 14th century solution to a 21st century problem. It will not bolster border security in Starr County,” U.S. Representative Henry Cuellar said in a statement. “I continue to stand against the wasteful spending of taxpayer dollars on an ineffective border wall.”
Political proponents of the border wall said the waivers should be used as a launching pad for a shift in policy.
“After years of denying that a border wall and other physical barriers are effective, the DHS announcement represents a sea change in the administration’s thinking: A secure wall is an effective tool for maintaining control of our borders,” Dan Stein, president of the Federation for American Immigration Reform, said in a statement. “Having made that concession, the administration needs to immediately begin construction of wall across the border to prevent the illegal traffic from simply moving to other areas of the border.”
