    Amid a tight labor market, many employers continue to look for ways to counter staffing shortages and lure potential hires back into the workforce.

    While some use creative benefits or work-from-home options as hiring draws, others hope to attract employees quickly with immediate cash in the form of a signing bonus.

    Many notable, large corporations are offering signing bonuses — from $300 as a shift manager at McDonald’s to $3,000 as customer service representative at AT&T and up to $10,000 as a baggage handler with United.

    The amount of the hiring bonuses vary greatly across each company and do change. But a quick browse through a corporation’s career page can show you what’s available. Here’s what we found.

    AT&T

    The communications giant has thousands of available positions at all times, and many come with a nice hiring bonus. Some examples include $3,000 for a customer service rep, $3,000 for inbound call center sales and typically $5,000 for installation technicians, though some locations offer $10,000.

    United Airlines

    United Airlines is currently offering significant sign-on bonuses even for lower paying jobs — such as $10,000 for part-time baggage handlers. Other positions that come with sign-on bonuses are $10,000 for a facility maintenance technician and an aircraft maintenance technician.

    Amazon

    The retail giant regularly offers hundreds of positions with sign-on bonuses, ranging from $1,000 to $3,000. Typical opportunities include air associate, fulfillment center warehouse associate and delivery station warehouse associate.

    Sysco

    The food service company also offers quite a few significant signing bonuses with its jobs. Sysco’s career page shows a CDL delivery truck driver with a $15,000 bonus, as well as a warehouse order selector — no experience required! — with a $7,500 sign-on bonus.

    McDonald’s

    Working for the Golden Arches can come with a financial boost if you apply for the right positions in the right places. Many jobs offer a $300 sign-on bonus, including department managers, shift managers, maintenance crew and morning prep team members.

    CVS

    CVS offers an array of jobs with bonuses — including $10,000 for a delivery driver with a CDL, $5,000 for a medicare field sales representative, $5,000 for a maintenance technician, $5,000 for supervisors and $1,000 for a warehouse stocker.     Walmart

    Walmart isn’t offering many bonuses right now — outside of eye-popping bonuses for pharmacists — but hiring bonuses include $1,000 for pharmacy technicians, $2,500 for an optician position, $2,000 for an HVAC tech, $1,000 for a food equipment technician and $300 for cashiers.

    Marriott

    The hospitality industry has been desperate for workers since the pandemic, and Marriott is no exception. The giant hotel company has positions throughout the world that offer hiring bonuses — like $1,000 for a night auditor, $500 for a specialty cook, $2,500 for a sales executive and $1,000 for a turndown attendant.

    Wegmans

    This grocery store chain with 109 locations, many of which are in the northeast, is currently offering $1,500 signing bonuses for a variety of jobs, including warehouse worker, distribution associate and warehouse order selector. Other bonuses include $750 for overnight stocker and $500 for an overnight associate. If you have a CDL, Wegmans is offering up to a $10,000 hiring bonus for related positions.

    FedEx

    The global delivery company has also recently jumped on the signing bonus bandwagon. Positions may include $5,000 for road driver, $1,000 for forklift operator and $1,000 for retail customer service associate.

    Sheetz

    This East Coast-based convenience store chain currently offers several jobs with sign-on bonuses from $500 for regular team members to $1,000 for supervisors.

    Hilton

    Like Marriott, Hilton is an international hotel chain with plenty of employment opportunities. Depending on the location, jobs with $100 to $1,000 hiring bonuses include night auditor, guest service agent, banquet set up, dishwasher, cook, steward, overnight cleaner, room attendant, massage therapist and more.

    Alaska Air

    United isn’t the only airline getting on the sign-on bonus bandwagon. Alaska Air offers some opportunities as well for potential candidates who live in the northwest. Positions include ground service agent with a $2,500 bonus, a ramp and customer service agent offers a $2,000 bonus, and a warehouse agent position offers $1,000.

    Verizon

    Verizon currently has hundreds of positions across the country with pretty nice signing bonuses. They offer $2,500 for a variety of positions, such as retail sales associate and retail sales representative. Heftier bonuses of $10,000 come into play for business sales manager and business sales account executive.

    Omni

    Another hotel chain with quite a few jobs with hiring bonuses is Omni Hotels and Resorts. They run the gamut from $250 for bellhop, $500 for dishwasher, $750 for maintenance engineer, $1,000 for housekeeping attendant and $3,000 for catering sales manager.

    Comcast

    The telecommunications corporate giant has plenty of opportunities across the country. They currently have signing bonuses for sales professionals ($2,000), installation technicians ($1,500) and retail sales professionals ($2,000), plus hundreds more.

    Amazon Raises Hourly Pay for Warehouse and Delivery Workers

    As more and more of its workers talk about joining labor unions to seek higher pay, Amazon has decided to give those employees a raise.

    Amazon announced it’s raising the average starting pay for its warehouse workers and delivery drivers from $18 to more than $19 per hour, starting this month. It’s a $1 billion annual investment for the nation’s second-largest employer behind Walmart.

    The e-commerce giant says its “front-line employees” in the U.S. will now make $16 to $26 per hour, depending on their position and their location.

    This across-the-board pay hike comes as rising inflation is eating up more of workers’ take-home pay. It’s happening just ahead of the busy holiday season, when Amazon typically hires tens of thousands of seasonal workers. (It has yet to announce hiring plans for this holiday season.)

    And not so coincidentally, this widespread wage increase also comes as frustrated workers in several of Amazon’s warehouses are talking about organizing and joining labor unions. They want higher pay, more paid time off, more job security and better conditions in the workplace. Amazon has been fighting back against unionization, according to a number of media reports.

    In a major development, workers at Amazon’s warehouse in Staten Island voted this year to form the company’s first-ever labor union in the U.S. Possibly joining them, employees at an Amazon warehouse near Albany, New York, are holding their own union election later this month.

    Along with the pay hike, Amazon says it’s expanding a payday advance program, called “Anytime Pay,” that allows its employees to cash out up to 70% of the pay they’ve earned whenever they want. Previously, most Amazon employees got their paychecks once or twice a month.

    Generation USA, a nonprofit organization that transforms education to employment, is excited to announce its partnership with Center on Rural Innovation (CORI), a nonprofit action tank advancing inclusive rural prosperity through digital economy ecosystems that support scalable entrepreneurship and tech job creation to offer its free, bootcamp-style online IT Support Specialist program with the goal to train 50 students living in rural America. In partnership with local community organizations, the program will draw from four rural areas around the country — Ada, Oklahoma, Durango, Colorado, Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and Taos, New Mexico.

    “Our four community partners have been working diligently to provide new and accessible opportunities like this for their residents,” said Future of Work Talent Lead at CORI, Brett Ellis. “This program fulfills both building a culture of technology and remote work while strengthening connections for students and local communities.”

    Local organizations — the Ada Jobs Foundation, The Generator in Pine Bluff, Fort Lewis College, Southwestern Colorado Accelerator Program for Entrepreneurs, and the University of New Mexico, Taos Hive — will all work together to help inform their communities and give learners the opportunity to learn more about this free, online job training.

    These programs, which are open to anyone seeking to expand their skill set and pursue a career in the technology field, give students opportunities to build and refine the skills needed to excel and launch new careers upon graduation.

    Through a comprehensive approach to digital economic development, CORI helps community leaders prove what’s possible in rural America. This involves building a nationwide network of local economic change agents; using mapping and data to highlight rural opportunities; making direct investments in underserved rural entrepreneurs; and closing the digital divide so all Americans can participate in the 21st-century digital economy. The organization’s intersection of culture and community complements Generation’s goal of transforming education to employment systems to prepare, place, and support people into life-changing careers that would otherwise be inaccessible.

    Generation USA, a workforce development nonprofit, today announced a partnership with ConSol USA, a business process “smart-sourcing” (BPO) organization with a mission focused on recruiting and up-skilling employees for high-demand technology sectors. In the first year of the partnership alone, ConSol has pledged to hire 3,000 Generation graduates by 2022. Together, the two organizations will work to scale sustainable workforce development for underrepresented communities, create a lasting impact on diversity and inclusion, and expand their proven education-to-employment model across the country. 

    Generation will work directly with ConSol’s top clients on a process called “activity mapping,” first analyzing employers’ biggest challenges and then providing well-trained staff with the solutions they’ve directly identified. Both organizations have a 10-year roadmap to expand this partnership together, working toward a larger goal of 300,000 Americans trained and employed in tech by 2030.

    According to the National Women’s Law Center, women have lost 5.4 million jobs since the pandemic began and women participating in the labor force is at its lowest since 

    1988. Black women and Latinas had higher rates of unemployment before the pandemic; in February 2020, 2.8 percent of white women were unemployed, compared with nearly 5 percent of Latinas and Black women. In December, those rates nearly doubled, with Black women being twice as likely to be the breadwinner of their families compared to white women.

    “More than 50% of our participants are women and nearly a third have dependents,” said Sienna Daniel, Chief Growth and Impact Officer. “Our programs are geared to help get women into a sector where traditionally, they’ve been left behind.”

    ​​​The COVID-19 pandemic has affected millions of Americans; however, between February and April, Black workers saw a greater loss in employment than white workers, according to the Economic Policy Institute, which noted that in April less than half of the black adult population was employed, further devastating a community that traditionally experiences higher unemployment rates, lower wages and with less savings to fall back on.

    This gap continues to widen and data from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis found the unemployment rate for white workers in August was 7.3 percent – lower than the national average – while the rate for Black workers was 13 percent.

    Generation USA is addressing this discrepancy by providing communities of color and those who are unemployed or underemployed with the resources they need to begin successful, sustainable careers.
