A semi-truck driver who earlier this year caused a six-vehicle crash in Arizona that resulted in the deaths of five people was on his phone and “actively using” TikTok just before the accident, officials said on Thursday. Danny Tiner, 36, has been charged with several felonies related to the incident.
The car wreck happened on Jan. 12 shortly after 6 a.m. Tiner, who was driving eastbound on Interstate 10, told police he had “received a message on his electronic work tablet and acknowledged the message” and then when he looked back at the road, “he could not stop his vehicle in time to avoid a collision.”
Arizona Department of Public Safety
An earlier incident report states that Tiner ended up hitting two passenger vehicles, wedging them into the back of another commercial truck. That truck was then pushed forward and hit two more cars.
“The two passenger vehicles crushed between the semi-trucks ignited and burst into flames,” the Arizona Department of Public Safety said in January. “The fire spread to the at-fault commercial truck tractors and trailer, and to the second commercial truck’s box trailer.”
The incident happened in an area where traffic was already stopped from a separate car accident that occurred hours earlier and involved three commercial trucks, one of which had also rear-ended other vehicles.
Five people – Ryan Gooding, Andrew Standifird, Jerardo Vazquez, Willis Thompson and Gilberto Franco – were killed in the accident caused by Tiner.
Upon further investigation, the Department of Public Safety said on Thursday that they found Tiner, whose commercial truck was hauling an open-top box trailer filled with garbage, had been speeding prior to the accident and was distracted while doing so.
“The investigation revealed Tiner was traveling 68 mph in the posted 55-mph construction zone and was actively using the TikTok application on his cell phone at the time of the collision,” the Arizona Department of Public Safety said. That information was found after Tiner turned his cell phone over to officials and a forensic examination was conducted through his device.
Tiner has since been charged with 10 felony charges related to the incident, including five counts of manslaughter, four counts of endangerment and one count of tampering with physical evidence.

“Saturday Night Live” star Pete Davidson has been charged with one misdemeanor count of reckless driving after authorities said he crashed a car into a Beverly Hills home earlier this year.
The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office confirmed the charge to CBS News in a statement Friday, but did not provide details on this incident.
“We believe that Mr. Davidson engaged in reckless driving, which ultimately resulted in his involvement in a serious collision into a home,” the statement read. “Luckily, no one was seriously injured as a result of this collision.”
According to CBS Los Angeles, the crash occurred in the late night hours of March 4 in a residential neighborhood.
Entertainment Tonight reported that Davidson’s girlfriend, Chase Sui Wonders, was also in the vehicle. Beverly Hills police told ET back in March that Davidson had struck a fire hydrant in the crash.
In L.A., a reckless driving charge can carry a sentence of up to 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.
“In 2022, traffic fatalities in Los Angeles have reached the highest levels seen in 20 years,” the DA’s office said in its statement. “This is an alarming trend that we cannot ignore. As a result, it’s crucial that we take all allegations of reckless driving seriously and hold those responsible accountable.”
CBS News reached out to Davidson’s representatives, but did not immediately get a response. He is scheduled to be arraigned July 27.

A disgruntled guest rammed his sports car through a Chinese hotel’s doors and drove wildly around its lobby, leaving a trail of destruction after arguing with staff about his missing laptop.
Several videos published on social media showed the white car smashing the glass doors of the central Shanghai hotel from their hinges, reversing and then bursting through into the lobby, knocking over anything in its path. A sign visible in one video shows the wild scene unfolded at the Jinling Purple Mountain Hotel Shanghai.
The car, a convertible with its top up, then hurtled haphazardly around the entrance hall as bewildered spectators asked each other what was going on, with one exclaiming: “He’s going nuts!”
In one video snippet, people can be seen trying to get the driver out of the crashed vehicle, before the car reverses and speeds through the lobby, sending bystanders scurrying away
Local police said the incident had taken place in the late morning on Tuesday, and that the driver was a 28-year-old man named Chen who had gotten into a dispute with hotel staff over the loss of his laptop during his stay there.
No one was injured in the incident, they said in the statement posted on their Weibo social media account, adding that Chen had been detained pending further investigation.
Hotel staff told AFP the laptop had been stolen and was found outside the hotel.
The car crashed into another set of doors before apparently heading for the exit, only to slam into a door frame and come to a stop, its hazard lights flashing.
Onlookers and hotel staff screamed at the driver to get out of the car, banging on it and trying to smash through a window to get the keys.
“Do you have any idea what you’ve done?” they can be heard shouting. “Are you crazy? Are you?”
According to booking.com, the Jinling Purple Mountain Hotel Shanghai is a 4-star hotel with “very good” reviews.

Beijing —One person died during a highway pile-up involving hundreds of vehicles in central China, state broadcaster CCTV reported Wednesday, with images of the accident showing scenes of chaos. Aerial pictures showed hundreds of passenger cars, vans and trucks — any of which had smashed into one another — led up on one section of the highway in dense fog.
Other viral videos posted online showed the mangled remains of several vehicles that had crashed into others.
The accident occurred due to low visibility from fog near the city of Zhengzhou, Henan province, and involved at least 200 vehicles, state media reported.
“On Wednesday morning, a sudden build-up of fog occurred at the Zhengxin Yellow River Bridge in Zhengzhou, which caused a traffic accident involving the collision of multiple vehicles,” CCTV cited Zhengzhou authorities as saying, adding that one person died as a result.

Zhengzhou traffic police said on their official social media account that traffic on the flyover had resumed as of Wednesday afternoon.
Emergency rescue efforts were carried out soon after the accident occurred, the CCTV report said.
Road accidents are common in China due to a lack of strict safety controls. In September, 27 passengers died after a bus transporting them to quarantine facilities in southwestern Guizhou province flipped over on a motorway.

The Milwaukee Police Department said officers from District 2 were involved in a chase with a vehicle suspected of drug dealing and reckless driving.Police say the chase lasted about one minute as the suspected vehicle fled across the 16th Street viaduct. The vehicle, a Toyota Avalon, crossed the center line of the roadway, crashed through a fence and went over the side of the bridge. Police say it appears that three adult males were in the suspected vehicle, all three died as a result of the crash. Police are still trying to identify the three adult males, although family identified one as 44-year-old Kendrick Miller. “He told me he was just going to stay out the way, you know, just stay low, but I guess things happen,” his daughter Kendryanna Miller said. Police say the driver also hit pedestrian on the sidewalk as it left the roadway. Police say the pedestrian suffered minor injuries. Witnesses staying at the Potawatomi Casino and Hotel told 12 News reporter Kendall Keys they heard a loud, explosion-like noise. They said they could see the aftermath from the windows of the hotel and described the vehicle.”It’s mangled, it’s blackish charred, it was burning for like 10 minutes,” said Marvin Lyons. “Totaled. Completely immersed in fire, just blackened Hulk. You could hear the tires popping,” John Jahn said. “I was just befuddled. What would cause a car to go over a concrete bridge? How did that happen, unless somebody was driving very fast?”12 News Hannah Hilyard asked Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman about the chase Friday. “First of all, condolences to the family of the victims. Any life lost is a life that we definitely should be mourning over, but we need to understand the behaviors of the individuals who take their life and the life of others when they drive recklessly. We have to understand there are consequences to our behaviors out there,” Chief Norman said.

Although Caleb had never heard of LearningRx, he’s thrilled he enrolled in a program and says it has changed his life!
“I made such awesome progress,” he says. “I could do things better, remember better and perform better in the job field. Since brain training, I definitely think the results and everything I know now and know about myself is going to allow me to go so much further in life. It works! It’s one of those things where I kind of just blew myself away. It’s made a huge difference in my life so I don’t see why it wouldn’t in anyone else’s.”
