  • Cape May police seek suspects who vandalized Humpty Dumpty statue at mini golf course

    A statue of Humpty Dumpty was ripped from its fixture at Cape May’s Ocean Putt Golf and then discarded at a property a few blocks away, police said Wednesday.

    Two men were caught on surveillance video entering the mini golf course at Jackson Street and Beach Avenue around 4 a.m. on Sunday. In the video shot from across the street, one of the suspects climbs over the fence and walks up to the fabled egg that’s a fixture at one of the holes. The man wrestles with it briefly before ripping it from its mount and walking off with it.

    Authorities said Humpty Dumpty was found a few blocks away. Police shared a photo of the toppled statue in the back of a pickup truck. Its top hat and one of its hands were broken off by the thieves.

    Ocean Putt Golf, which has been a family-owned business at the shore community since 1964, could not be immediately reached for comment Wednesday afternoon. It’s unknown whether the statue has been returned to the business, which promoted Humpty Dumpty on Instagram ahead of Memorial Day weekend this year.

    The Humpty Dumpty nursery rhyme, first recorded in late 18th century England and translated into various languages, tells the tale of a poor egg that takes a “great fall” from a wall and cracks into pieces. It’s said that all the king’s horses and all the king’s men couldn’t put Humpty together again.

    Cape May police shared three additional videos on Facebook that show the two suspects walking together on nearby streets around the time of the incident. Police said anyone with information about the suspects can call police at 609-385-0486.

    Middle Thorofare Bridge reopens in Lower Township after being hit by boat

    WILDWOOD CREST, New Jersey (WPVI) — The Middle Thorofare Bridge in Lower Township, New Jersey, was shut down Friday night after it was hit by a boat, according to police.

    Witnesses say a boat struck the bridge around 9:30 p.m. One man was waiting to cross over from the Cape May side when he says it looked like the boat lost power and then struck the bridge.

    Further details on the incident have not been released but Wildwood Crest police say the bridge will be closed until at least 8 a.m.

    Videos shared on social media showed the vessel being removed late Friday night.

    Officials say a 90′ commercial fishing vessel lost power and struck the bridge. It became pinned to the north side of the bridge. That vessel has since been towed away and no crewmembers were injured.

    The bridge was reopened around 7:30 a.m. Saturday morning following a thorough inspection. All operations have resumed.
    The bridge recently reopened after it was shut down for two weeks due to a mechanical issue.

    The bridge connects Lower Township’s Diamond Beach and Wildwood Crest to Cape May.

    More than $300,000 in designer handbags stolen from Cape May shop during smash-and-grab burglary

    Burglars broke into a Cape May jeweler early Sunday morning and made off with vintage Chanel, Christian Dior and Louis Vuitton handbags valued at more than $300,000, the store said.

    Queen May Jewelry, which sells designer purses in addition to rings and necklaces, posted surveillance video on Instagram of three people in hooded sweatshirts smashing the glass of the shop’s front door and then climbing through to grab armfuls of merchandise.

    The jeweler said the burglary occurred at 2:59 a.m. Sunday, and is asking for the public’s help in identifying the thieves. On Monday, an employee said there had been no updates in the case, but that Cape May Police are investigating.

    A dispatcher for Cape May County Communications added that officers are asking nearby businesses for surveillance footage as part of their investigation.

    The stolen items include a 1961 Gucci tote, a vintage Chanel camera bag and a Louis Vuitton soccer ball made for France’s 1998 World Cup victory. Queen May Jewelry also mentioned a “rare” Louis Vuitton trunk, inscribed with the name Jenny Hecht, in its Instagram post. The store provided the serial numbers of the roughly 40 stolen items in its post and asked customers to forward the information to pawn shops and secondhand sellers.
