Indonesian police burned an 11–hectare marijuana plantation in Aceh, North Sumatra, on Wednesday (March 8) after it was discovered by local authorities last month.

“Combined with another field in West Aceh the total area is 43 hectares, which produces 190,000 cannabis stems ready for harvest,” Aceh Police Chief Ahmad Haydar told reporters, as marijuana trees were being uprooted and piled for burning.

According to new research from Aston University, cannabidiol (CBD) could be used to treat epilepsy in children.

The researchers found that CBD, the non-psychoactive component of cannabis, can reduce epileptic seizures in children with treatment-resistant forms of the condition.

The Aston University team collaborated with researchers from the NYU Grossman School of Medicine on the paper titled ‘Cannabidiol modulates excitatory-inhibitory ratio to counter hippocampal hyperactivity’, which has been published in the journal Neuron.

There are around 60,000 cases of epilepsy in children in the UK, and the condition can begin at any age. Epilepsy affects children in the same way as adults; however, seizures may be more common in childhood. Epilepsy can be caused by brain injury bought on by trauma, difficulties at birth or infections such as meningitis. However, some researchers believe the condition is always caused by genetic factors.

CBD can block the seizure-causing signals in the brain

The researchers found that CBD could block signals emitted by lysophosphatidylinositol (LPI) molecules. They believe that LPI amplifies nerve function in the brain that causes epileptic seizures. The study builds on previous research showing that CBD can stop LPI from amplifying nerve signals in the hippocampus.

A Boston middle school student was hospitalized Monday after the student and several others ate what may have been marijuana edibles.

Boston police spokesperson John Boyle said that police were called to the Maurice J. Tobin K-8 School in Roxbury at 12:08 p.m. for a report that “several” students had eaten chocolate bars infused with marijuana.

Police determined from their initial investigation that the chocolate “may have” contained marijuana, Boyle said.

The students were evaluated by the school nurse, and one student became ill, Boyle said. That student was taken to a local hospital for treatment, and the other students were released to their parents. WCVB reported that five students ate the chocolate.

In a letter to the Tobin School community, the news station reported, Principal Natasha Halfkenny said the students were “middle school” students, although it is unclear how old they are. She also said that school staff reported the incident to police.

Hong Kong bans CBD, forcing businesses to shut or revamp

HONG KONG — Hong Kong has banned CBD as a “dangerous drug” and imposed harsh
penalties for its possession, forcing fledging businesses to shut down or
revamp.

Supporters say CBD, or cannabidiol, derived from the cannabis plant, can help
relieve stress and inflammation without getting its users high, unlike its more
famous cousin THC, the psychoactive ingredient of marijuana which has long been
illegal in Hong Kong. CBD was once legal in the city, and cafés and shops
selling CBD-infused products were popular among young people.

But all that has changed with the prohibition, which took effect in early
February but had been announced by the government last year. CBD-related
businesses have closed down while others have struggled to remodel. Consumers
dumped what they saw as a cure for their ailments into special collection boxes
set up around the city.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – The South Dakota Legislature passed a bill Monday morning that adds post-traumatic stress disorder to the list of approved medical marijuana certifications.

Senate Bill 1 passed the House 36 to 32.

Rep. Ernie Otten (R-Tea) said adding PTSD gives people relief.

“Let’s first shoot the elephant in the room,” he said. “Is it medicine? No. It is for pain relief and allows somebody to sleep.”

Rep. Otten also said he was surprised at some people using cannabis that he would never have guessed were using it.

Rep. Fred Deutsch (R-Florence) spoke against the measure.

“If we’re only looking at compassion, we’re not doing our job,” he argued.

He also said worldwide, there are plenty of studies that state that medical cannabis is not effective in treating PTSD.

The bill also allows the Legislature to determine which ailments or disorders qualify for medical marijuana.

Now, the state Department of Health makes those determinations.

The measure previously passed the Senate and now goes to Gov. Kristi Noem for her consideration.

It’s estimated that 0.5 to 3 percent of the general population suffers from seasonal affective disorder, also known by its wildly appropriate acronym: SAD. This debilitating condition affects 10 to 20 percent of individuals with a major depressive disorder.

Seasonal affective disorder occurs because of the changing of seasons in certain climates. During winter months, many people don’t get as much sunlight as they do in other seasons, both because of the shorter days and, in many parts of the world, colder temperatures. These people also get less vitamin D, which is important for mental health.

Untreated, SAD can lead to major depressive episodes for some people. But for many people, SAD manifests itself as a general feeling of being in the doldrums. Lack of motivation, difficulty concentrating, and difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much are common symptoms.

For those who struggle with depression year-round, antidepressants are usually the most effective solution. But for those who only struggle with this feeling during three months out of the year and whose symptoms are not severe, CBD has, for many, been a welcome, more holistic option.

Oklahomans will have a decision to make next week: Should recreational marijuana be legalized?

State Question 820 would make it legal for people to have up to one ounce of weed for adult use, grow up to six cannabis plants and create a pathway to expunge some prior marijuana offenses.

It’s unclear what voters will do. When Oklahomans narrowly voted to approve State Question 788, which legalized medical marijuana, regulators were caught flat-footed. But there’s been a boom in business and with it a boom in tax revenues for the state that has paid for things like school facilities. Pot businesses have also become a central part of the state: There are more here than anywhere else in the country.

Oklahoma is a conservative state, and some Republican leaders, like Gov. Kevin Stitt, have come out in opposition to the state question.

“The big reason for me is, No. 1, it’s illegal federally,” he said at a recent press conference. “There shouldn’t be a patchwork of states doing different things. We need to let the feds tell us if it’s legal or illegal, we shouldn’t let the states tell us that.”

In November, Oklahoma’s neighbors Missouri and Arkansas had similar state questions on the ballot. But the results in both of those states were different. Voters in Missouri legalized recreational cannabis, while voters in Arkansas did not.

The Guyana Revenue Authority’s Law Enforcement and Investigation Division recently seized quantities of cannabis and refined marijuana found in an incoming passenger’s luggage at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri and is calling on persons to desist from such activities.

It was March 3rd the seizure was made and the passenger was arrested and handed over to the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) as investigation continues.
