Cancun Airport Will Get $1.4 Billion Renovation in 2024

Cancun International Airport (CUN) will undergo a major renovations this year. The airport’s owner, Aeropuertos del Surest (ASUR), has revealed plans to invest $1.4 billion on renovating and expanding passenger services at the second busiest airport in Mexico.

The Cancun Sun reports that the upgrades will be focused on Terminal 1, Terminal 4, as well as a new Maya Train Station.

Terminal 4, which is both a domestic and international terminal, was opened in 2017. It serves as many as nine million passengers annually, as well as several US carriers such as Frontier Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Southwest Airlines and Sun Country Airlines. The terminal will be expanded to accommodate more flights and passengers. Other full service airline from the US and other countries fly into Terminal 3.

The upgrades at Terminal 4 will likely include a on-site hotel and additional lounge. However, more details on the progress of these projects will be revealed at a later date. Currently, two MERA Business Lounges and The Lounge in Partnership with Air Transat are the only options at this terminal.

Terminal 1 will also see upgrades at it seven gates. This terminal is almost exclusively used for private and charter flights.

Another important addition is a brand-new train station for the Maya Train. This service launched last month between Cancun and Campeche. The train station will not only be used for tourists departing west to Campeche and eventually south towards Playa del Carmen and Tulum, but it will also be a convenient way for travelers to get to the airport with public transportation.

  • Stephen King Taunts Ted Cruz With A Blast From His Recent Past

Stephen King Taunts Ted Cruz With A Blast From His Recent Past

    [ad_1]

Horror master Stephen King gave Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) a blunt reminder of his own recent past in response to the lawmaker’s latest tweet about immigration.

Cruz fired off a message calling the situation at the southern border an “invasion” and cited an increase in the number of border encounters with people in the Terrorist Screening Database, which has become a recent Republican talking point.

When Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) made a similar comparison last month, Washington Post fact-checker Glenn Kessler called it “misleading” given that there are some 1.6 million names on the list, many erroneously, and that the statistics reflect people who were caught.

In other words, they weren’t let into the country.

But King noted that at least one person went in the other direction: Cruz himself, who infamously fled Texas in 2021 as record cold and widespread power outages led to a deadly humanitarian crisis across the state.

As the disaster unfolded, Cruz snuck out to vacation in sunny Cancun ― returning home only after he was noticed by some of his fellow passengers and shamed online.

King might be best known for his books and the film adaptations that have emerged from them, but he’s also been politically active, especially on social media, where he hasn’t been shy about calling out GOP lawmakers.

    CNN
     —

Four people were found dead near a hotel in Cancun on Monday, according to Mexican officials, the latest bout of violence in the popular tourist destination.

Two people have been arrested for their possible involvement in the deaths of four people, according to the Attorney General of the state of Quintana Roo.

All of the deceased are Mexicans, said José Pablo Mathey Cruz, the Secretary of Public Security of Benito Juárez, the municipality where Cancun is located.

Juárez said the suspects are allegedly engaged in the sale and distribution of narcotics, adding that footage from local security cameras and the joint work of local authorities helped lead to their arrest.

The Prosecutor’s Office confirmed earlier on Monday that three people had been found dead and an investigation was opened. Later, the office said they found a fourth body.

Polo Gallegos, a tourist who was in the area at the time of the shooting, told CNN en Español that he heard shots while at a nearby gym at around 10:00 local time.

“We heard the shots and they hid all of us in an office and they kept us there until the incident was over. Everyone kept us there until they secured the area, and right now there are police, the Navy, everyone, everyone in the beach area and it’s very uncomfortable for us,” he said.

The security situation in Cancun has deteriorated in recent years. In 2021, the Mexican government said the National Guard would permanently deploy to Cancun and its surrounding area following a rise in violence there linked to organized crime, Reuters reported.

There have been a series of violent incidents around the Caribbean coastal area. In early 2022, two people died after shots were fired in a hotel at Playa del Carmen, according to CNN en Español.

There were shootings reported in late 2021 in the tourist areas of Puerto Morelos and Cancun.

The State Department advises travelers to “exercise increased caution due to crime and kidnapping” in the state of Quintana Roo. The advisory says that violence and criminal activity may occur anywhere, “including in popular tourist destinations.”

“Travelers should maintain a high level of situational awareness, avoid areas where illicit activities occur, and promptly depart from potentially dangerous situations,” the advisory warns.
