Myanmar beauty queen facing junta threat leaves Thailand for Canada | CNN

     —

A beauty queen from Myanmar who took refuge in Thailand after criticizing her home country’s ruling military junta has left Bangkok for Canada where she is expected to seek asylum, Thai immigration officials told CNN.

Han Lay, 23, captured international attention with an emotional pageant speech during the finals of the Miss Grand International Myanmar competition in 2021 when she held up a banner with the words “Pray for Myanmar” to raise awareness of human rights atrocities committed by junta officials.

She received death threats after the speech and decided not to return home after the competition – which was held in Thailand.

However, she appeared to face the threat of deportation after returning to Thailand last Wednesday following a trip to Vietnam. She was stopped by officials at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport who said they had discovered a problem with her passport and since then she had been in limbo.

Archayon Kraithong, deputy chief of Thailand’s immigration bureau, told CNN on Wednesday that Han Lay had left Bangkok on Tuesday night. “Her final destination is Canada,” he said without giving further details.

Han Lay previously told CNN that she was seeking political asylum in Canada despite wanting to remain in Thailand.

“Han Lay was the victim of a deliberate political act by the junta to make her stateless when she flew back to Thailand from Vietnam last week,” said Phil Robertson, Asia deputy director of Human Rights Watch, adding that it was “not the first time” junta officials had “weaponized” Burmese passports.

“There is no doubt that what transpired was a trap to try to force Han Lay to return to Myanmar, where she would have faced immediate arrest, likely abuse in detention, and imprisonment,” Robertson added.

The situation in Myanmar continues to deteriorate following the 2021 military coup. Human rights violations remain rife, rights groups say and state executions have returned as conflict across the country rages.

Millions continue to resist the ruling junta led by Min Aung Hlaing, which has killed hundreds of pro-democracy protesters and locked up the country’s democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

  • Fiona bears down on northeast Canada as big, powerful storm

Fiona bears down on northeast Canada as big, powerful storm

CAGUAS, Puerto Rico (AP) — Hurricane Fiona transformed into a post-tropical cyclone late Friday, but meteorologists warned it could still bring hurricane-strength wind, heavy rain and big waves to the Atlantic Canada region and had the potential to be one of the most severe storms in the country’s history.

Fiona, which started the day as Category 4 storm but weakened to Category 2 strength late Friday, was forecast to make landfall in Nova Scotia early Saturday.

The Canadian Hurricane Centre issued a hurricane watch over extensive coastal expanses of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland. The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Fiona should reach the area as a “large and powerful post-tropical cyclone with hurricane-force winds.”

“This is is definitely going to be one of, if not the most powerful, tropical cyclones to affect our part of the country,” said Ian Hubbard, meteorologist for the Canadian Hurricane Centre in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. “It’s going to be definitely as severe and as bad as any I’ve seen.”

Fiona was a Category 4 hurricane when it pounded Bermuda with heavy rains and winds earlier Friday as it swept by the island on a route heading for northeastern Canada. Authorities in Bermuda opened shelters and closed schools and offices ahead of Fiona. Michael Weeks, the national security minister, said there had been no reports of major damage.

The U.S. center said Fiona had maximum sustained winds of 105 mph (165 kph) late Friday. It was centered about 140 miles (220 kilometers) southeast of Halifax, Nova Scotia, heading north at 46 mph (74 kph).

Hurricane-force winds extended outward up to 185 miles (295 kilometers) from the center and tropical storm-force winds extended outward up to 345 miles (555 kilometers).

Hubbard said the storm was weakening as it moved over cooler water and he felt it highly unlikely it would reach land with hurricane strength. Hurricanes in Canada are somewhat rare, in part because once the storms reach colder waters, they lose their main source of energy. and become extratropical. But those cyclones still can have hurricane-strength winds, though with a cold instead of a warm core and no visible eye. Their shape can be different, too. They lose their symmetric form and can more resemble a comma.

Bob Robichaud, Warning Preparedness Meteorologist for the Canadian Hurricane Centre, said the center of the storm was expected to arrive in Nova Scotia on Saturday morning, but its winds and rains would arrive late Friday.

“It’s going to a bad one,” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said. “We of course hope there won’t be much needed, but we feel there probably will be. And we will be there for that. In the meantime we encourage everyone to stay safe and to listen to the instructions of local authorities and hang in there for the next 24 hours.”

Officials in Prince Edward Island sent an emergency alert warning of severe flooding along the northern shore of the province. “Immediate efforts should be taken to protect belongings. Avoid shorelines, waves are extremely dangerous. Residents in those regions should be prepared to move out if needed,” the alert read.

Authorities in Nova Scotia sent an emergency alert to phones warning of Fiona’s arrival and urging people to say inside, avoid the shore, charge devices and have enough supplies for at least 72 hours. Officials warned of prolonged power outages, wind damage to trees and structures and coastal flooding and possible road washouts.

A hurricane warning was in effect for Nova Scotia from Hubbards to Brule; Prince Edward Island; Isle-de-la-Madeleine; and Newfoundland from Parson’s Pond to Francois.

Fiona so far has been blamed for at least five deaths — two in Puerto Rico, two in the Dominican Republic and one in the French island of Guadeloupe.

People across Atlantic Canada were stocking up on last-minute essentials and storm-proofing their properties Friday ahead of the arrival.

At Samsons Enterprises boatyard in the small Acadian community of Petit-de-Grat on Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton Island, Jordan David was helping his friend Kyle Boudreau tie down Boudreau’s lobster boat “Bad Influence” in hopes it wouldn’t be lifted and broken by winds .

“All we can do is hope for the best and prepare as best we can. There’s something coming, and just how bad is yet to be determined,” said David, wearing his outdoor waterproof gear.

Kyle Boudreau said he was worried. “This is our livelihood. Our boats get smashed, our traps gets smashed … it’s stuff you don’t have to start your season next year,” he said.

Aidan Sampson said he had been working 11-hour days in his father-in-law’s boatyard for the past week, lifting fishing vessels out of the water.

Meanwhile, the National Hurricane Center said newly formed Tropical Storm Ian in the Caribbean was expected to keep strengthening and hit Cuba early Tuesday as a hurricane and then hit southern Florida early Wednesday.

It was centered about 385 miles (625 kilometers) southeast of Kingston, Jamaica late Friday. It had maximum sustained winds of 40 mph (65 kph) and was moving west-northwest at 12 mph (19 kph). A hurricane watch was issued for the Cayman Islands.

Before reaching Bermuda, Fiona caused severe flooding and devastation in Puerto Rico, leading U.S. President Joe Biden to say Thursday that the full force of the federal government is ready to help the U.S. territory recover.

Gov. Pedro Pierluisi of Puerto Rico activated the National Guard to help distribute diesel fuel to hospitals and supermarkets. The force is also supplying generators used to operate potable water plants and telecommunications towers. Hundreds of people remained isolated by blocked roads.

  • BluWave-ai and Summerside Deliver 100% Solar Powered Concert During Bryan Adams’ 2022 Canadian Tour

BluWave-ai and Summerside Deliver 100% Solar Powered Concert During Bryan Adams’ 2022 Canadian Tour

First 100% Directly Connected, Time Shifted, Solar Energy Powered Indoor Rock Concert in North America

    Press Release

    Sep 12, 2022

The City of Summerside and BluWave-ai completed the first 100% time-shifted solar energy powered concert in North America. This feat took place on the first stop of the 2022 Canadian Tour of globally renowned Canadian musician, Bryan Adams, at the Credit Union Place in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Canada from 8-11 pm on Tuesday, August 31st. The concert was run indoors at night leveraging solar and battery solutions. This milestone for BluWave-ai and Summerside is building off of their shared project, the Canadian Smart Grid AI Center of Excellence at the City of Summerside, announced earlier this year.

Leveraging the BluWave-ai energy optimization platform running in the cloud, BluWave-ai Edge and BluWave-ai Center, the partners were able to predict solar production during the day of August 31st. Through this, they could store sufficient solar capacity in a 890 kWh battery to cover the projected energy demand of the concert such as lighting, audio equipment, and air conditioning. With a day of immense solar fluctuations, the system was able to operate the building in advance of the concert while storing enough solar energy to drive the concert in the evening.

Once the concert started, the automated platform took over to detect the increased load created by the concert and peripheral elements and managed the stored solar energy to supply the concert load over the 3 hour period.

Below is how the system played out on concert day:

    • The AI platform left enough battery capacity unfilled during the night of August 30th to August 31st to fill the battery with solar production at the Summerside CUP on the day of the Bryan Adams concert, August 31st.
    • From approximately 8:00 am to 12:00 pm AST the battery was loaded with 496kWh of coincidental solar produced energy by setting thresholds. This way, solar generated over capacity was moved to the battery for the concert in the evening while the rest of the facility could run on a combo of Summerside Wind Power and regular grid power.
    • Baselining of the overall facility power usage from 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm AST on days without a concert showed the electricity load. During this time averaged 718.5 kWh for the facility with no concert.
    • During the 3 hour concert the facility used 1173 kWh. The total incremental energy from the concert was 454.5 kWh compared to regular days.
    • During the concert the BluWave-ai system delivered 496kWh of time-shifted green solar power via the battery or an average of 165kW per hour more, covering the entire needs of the concert and associated climate control.

To showcase the performance of the BluWave-ai Canadian Smart Grid Center of excellence which works with Summerside’s wind farm, solar array, battery storage, grid connection, and smart metering assets, the cloud-based AI optimization platform was able to deliver a 100% solar powered concert with less than 24 hours to configure, commission, and operationalize to support the new demand of the system to support the green rock concert.

In November 2021, BluWave‐ai and the City of Summerside announced the completion of the first-end to-end AI‐optimized grid in North America, the first industry proof point of a scalable system applicable to entire regions and countries for transitioning energy networks toward maximizing the use of renewable assets. In 2021, BluWave-ai was awarded a major contract to advance Summerside’s system utility manager software to integrate a new 26‐megawatt Solar and Battery project.

The test during the Bryan Adams August 31st concert used a subset of the Summerside smart grid and AI control system to manage operations, perfectly matching solar powering the concert load.

“As a testament to the robustness and flexibility of the BluWave-ai energy optimization platform, and with very short notice, the system was able to manage energy use at the arena to supply the concert with 100% solar energy,” said Devashish Paul, CEO of BluWave-ai. “Once the constraints were identified, the automated platform took over. This proved a compelling use case for time-shifting solar energy which is applicable for large commercial enterprises, electric vehicle fleets and for supporting the grid with demand response and resiliency without resorting to diesel backup generators and shows another example of our company’s live real-time deployments on streaming data and renewable energy assets.”

“Summerside is committed to growing our net zero economy and leading PEI’s Clean Tech Innovations has invested in the smart grid, building renewable energy generation and creating the CUP Arena microgrid with the solar and battery energy storage system from Samsung C&T. We brought in BluWave-ai as a partner to set up the Canadian Smart Grid AI Center of Excellence and provide the AI-enabled control of the city smart grid,” said Mike Thususka, Summerside Director of Economic Development. “To showcase our capabilities as a leading North American municipality, we decided to deliver a 100% green solar energy concert experience at our arena. We continue to invest in our green future and by 2023 with the Sunbank solar and storage facility, Summerside will be running off 70% renewable energy with an eye to hit 100% in the very near future. Industries setting up operations in Summerside may be eligible for various clean tech and first customer experiences using Summerside’s leading edge infrastructure which we demonstrated at the concert working with our partners BluWave-ai.”

“SDTC has been a proud supporter of BluWave-ai’s data-driven AI technology since 2018,” said Leah Lawrence, President of SDTC. “What better way to showcase the power of this homegrown Canadian innovation than by running a major concert event from one of our country’s rock icons off of solar energy! Congratulations to the team at BluWave-ai and the City of Summerside for leading the way in making the entertainment industry more sustainable as we move towards Net Zero.”

Even following a partially cloudy day, Summerside and BluWave-ai delivered a 100% solar energy power for the Bryan Adams concert by time shifting solar energy over-production to the evening and matching it to the concert load. This proved that the entertainment and sports events industry can run their events without depending on elaborate carbon-emitting diesel generation backup systems for resiliency when solar powered batteries can be connected to events. In Summerside’s case, the battery and solar generation are on site. For concert locations without this capability, batteries can be charged off-site and moved to the venue by electric trucking rather than by installing diesel generators moved by diesel-powered trucks, enabling a similar 100% clean operation.

BluWave-ai Research Note: According to existing public documentation of equivalent sized or larger solar installations at sporting and entertainment facilities across North America, none of the facilities which exceed Summerside’s solar capacity have sufficient storage capacity to run a 3 hour 400+ kWh concert event with purely stored, locally generated solar energy.

  • WAMC Gives Back During June Fund Drive

WAMC Gives Back During June Fund Drive

    Press Release

    Jun 9, 2022

WAMC/Northeast Public Radio completed its June Fund Drive on June 9, 2022, raising over $1,000,000 to support the station’s award-winning news and cultural programming thanks to the generosity of listeners contributing during 12 hours over four days of on-air fundraising and also to the Locked Box. This drive marks the second of three this year.

Taking precautions for the health and safety of volunteers and staff, WAMC has continued to delay returning to its traditional Fund Drive. Instead, the Locked Box and Fund Drive were completed with the help of a few volunteers and the WAMC staff, who fielded calls and online donations.

WAMC was honored to partner with The Food Pantries For The Capital District and Janitronics to help feed hundreds of families this summer through the drive.

WAMC President and CEO Alan Chartock says, “Even in our most challenging times, including COVID and political disruption, WAMC’s listeners have come through to keep this station going. This is an incredible family, and I couldn’t be more proud. I’m forever grateful for the support once again.”

Ray Graf, newscaster and Vox Pop host, adds: “These are tough economic times; it’s difficult for many to even put food on the table. Add to that a world that is still picking up the pieces of a pandemic and still the WAMC family is there to help. It amazes me.”

WAMC is a listener-supported station that relies on contributions to stay alive. Its Fund Drives primarily occur three times a year: February, June, and October. Each drive has a $1 million goal to support the general operations of WAMC/Northeast Public Radio.

If you’re interested in finding out more about their Fund Drives, or to donate or volunteer, please contact Amber Sickles at 1-800-323-9262 ext. 133.

  • Parenting 101: First Nations Child & Family Caring Society calls on people in Canada to help raise awareness of Bear Witness Day May 10th

Parenting 101: First Nations Child & Family Caring Society calls on people in Canada to help raise awareness of Bear Witness Day May 10th

On Tuesday, May 10th, First Nations Child & Family Caring Society

of Canada (The Caring Society) will recognize Bear Witness Day. The goal of Bear Witness Day is to raise awareness of Jordan’s Principle, a child-first principle and legal rule that ensures First Nations children receive the services and supports they need when they need them, such as access to health care and education.

The day also marks the bearthday of Spirit Bear, a teddy bear and reconciliation bearrister who represents the 165,000 First Nations children and their families impacted by the human rights case that made Jordan’s Principle a legal rule, and the thousands of other children who stood with them for fairness.

Jordan’s Principle is named in loving memory of Jordan River Anderson, a First Nations child from Norway House Cree Nation in Manitoba who was born with complex medical needs. He died in the hospital at age five while the provincial and federal governments argued over who should pay for his at-home care – care that would have been paid for immediately had Jordan not been First Nations.

Following a nine-year case, the federal government was ordered by the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal to fully implement Jordan’s Principle by May 10, 2016. Although it has taken several more years and further non-compliance orders for significant progress, May 10th was chosen for Bear Witness Day as it is an important date in the history of Jordan’s Principle.

“Each year on May 10th we share Jordan’s story and encourage people in Canada to show their support and ‘bear witness’ to ensure Jordan’s Principle is fully implemented,” says Cindy Blackstock, Executive Director at the Caring Society, in the same release. “Bear Witness Day provides us with an opportunity to educate Canadians on the inequities experienced by First Nations children, and it helps us ensure that moving forward, these children have timely access to the public services they need. However, there is much work to be done by Canada to end ongoing inequities in services for First Nations children, youth, and families. There are solutions, and so public awareness and pressure are needed to ensure the federal government ends this discrimination.”

The Caring Society invites people in Canada to participate in Bear Witness Day 2022 by learning about Jordan’s Principle, sharing the information with family and friends, and posting a photo with their own teddy bear on social with the hashtag #JordansPrinciple and #BearWitnessDay.

  • Rentals.ca Network, Inc. Launches, Bringing Together 6 Rental Marketplaces in Canada

Rentals.ca Network, Inc. Launches, Bringing Together 6 Rental Marketplaces in Canada

The new alliance will provide exceptional value to renters and landlords across Canada

    Press Release

    updated: Sep 30, 2021

Rentals.ca Network, Inc. has announced its launch, which includes six Canadian rental marketplaces offering the most traffic and leads for landlords to list their properties and providing the most listings for renters to find their next home in Canada.

    The Rentals.ca Network consists of Rentals.ca, Rentfaster.ca, Louer.ca, Rentboard.ca, RentCanada.com and TorontoRentals.com.

The network features map-based search, neighbourhood scores and commute times, 3D virtual tours, floor plans, open house dates, and artificial intelligence to detect fraudulent listings.

“We are passionate about offering renters an exceptional experience through intuitive design on mobile, tablet, desktop and voice devices,” said Matt Danison, CEO of Rentals.ca. “With an understanding of the next generation of renters, we are focusing on interval searching, where renters might only have five minutes to scan our rental inventory while waiting in line, commuting on the subway, or during a lunch break.”

More efficiencies are on the horizon as technologies are integrated, and best practices and key features are applied to all marketplaces. The Rentals.ca Network has already achieved synergies by merging sales, human resources and billing, which provide cost savings across the network.

The Rentals.ca Network is a game-changer for renters and landlords.

For the renter, the new network will provide more quality listings, intuitive design, and a safer search experience which will make it easier for renters to find their next home.

For the landlord, the new network will drive more quality leads, save time in posting and editing listings on multiple websites, and offer exceptional customer service.

“By consolidating under the new rental network, we will be able to provide a better experience for both landlords and renters,” said Mark Hawkins, president of Rentfaster.ca. “We will be able to deliver better technology, a seamless experience and better data, which will allow Canadians to find a home and rent a home — faster.”

Although the network works with major REITs and property managers across Canada, most of the property listings comes from small landlords posting their apartments, condos, townhouses, detached homes and basements for rent directly to one of the six market-leading brands.

    BY THE NUMBERS

    • In August, the network received 26 million page views, 4.3 million sessions and 2.3 million users.
    • In the last 12 months, the network has generated 50 million sessions, with 24 million users resulting in 5.4 million leads generated for landlords across Canada.
    • The network ranks in the top three positions on Google for 53,980 keywords.
    • The network has installed 17,500 branded “for rent signs” for landlords in 18 cities across Canada.
    • Since 2019, 110,000 small mom and pop landlords have listed properties with one of the six rental marketplaces resulting in over 240,000 listed properties through our easy-to-use e-commerce experiences.

Rentals.ca Network has the most data on vacant units in Canada. This will allow the company to better predict trends, and help clients make better decisions in developing new rental housing.

Rentals.ca Network is a trusted source for media outlets for news, data and information on rental rates, trends and insights in Canada producing the monthly National Rent Report, the Toronto GTA Rent Report and the annual Canadian Rental Market Predictions Report. The reports are created in collaboration with long-time housing data analyst Ben Myers, president of Bullpen Research & Consulting.

In August, among the 165 stories and media mentions of Rentals.ca, were rental news pieces done by The Globe and Mail, Global News, Global News Radio, The Canadian Press, CBC, CTV, Toronto Star, The Daily Hive — Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, Vancouver Is Awesome, Narcity, the Winnipeg Free-Press and The Hamilton Spectator.

“Rentals.ca Network pledges to stay on top of the latest news, trends, insights and data to help keep media outlets and their audiences well-tuned to the rental heartbeat of Canada,” said Paul Danison, content director of Rentals.ca Network. Danison has over 40 years of experience as a reporter/editor/journalist.

Funding for the Rentals.ca Network, Inc. is made possible by Rentsync, formerly known as Landlord Web Solutions, a St. Catharines and Toronto-based firm. Rentsync is a leader in rental housing marketing, advertising and software solutions in North America.

“This transaction creates opportunities to pool resources and provide a more sophisticated set of tools for renters and landlords in Canada,” said Steve Cowan, CEO of Rentsync. “We are tremendously excited about the opportunities ahead.”

Rentals.ca Network offices are in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Calgary and St. Catharines.

Meta begins blocking news access on its platforms in Canada | CNN Business

    Washington
    CNN
     —

Meta has begun to remove news content from Facebook and Instagram in Canada, the social media giant said Tuesday, in response to recently passed legislation in the country that requires tech companies to negotiate payments to news organizations for hosting their content.

As a result of the move — which Meta had previously said would occur before the law takes effect — Meta’s Canadian users will no longer be able to click on links to news articles posted to Facebook and Instagram.

The changes began Tuesday and will roll out gradually over the coming weeks, said Meta spokesperson Andy Stone.

The decision comes amid a global debate over the relationship between news organizations and social media companies about the value of news content, and who gets to benefit from it.

Google has also announced that it plans to remove news content from its platforms in Canada when the law takes effect, which could happen by December.

The Canadian legislation, known as Bill C-18, was given final approval in June. It aims to support the sustainability of news organizations by regulating “digital news intermediaries with a view to enhancing fairness in the Canadian digital news marketplace.”

It comes after the passage of a 2021 Australian law that the tech platforms initially opposed by warning it would similarly force them to remove news content. Since then, the platforms have reached voluntary agreements with a range of news outlets in that country.

Like-minded proposals have been introduced around the world amid allegations that the tech industry has decimated local journalism by sucking away billions in online advertising revenues.

In May, Meta also threatened to remove news content from California if the state moved ahead with a revenue-sharing bill. The legislation was put on hold last month.

And at the federal level, the US Senate in June advanced a bill that would grant news organizations the ability to jointly negotiate for a greater share of advertising revenues against online platforms, thanks to a proposed antitrust exemption for publishers and broadcasters.

In a blog post Tuesday, Meta said the Canadian legislation “misrepresents the value news outlets receive when choosing to use our platforms.”

“The legislation is based on the incorrect premise that Meta benefits unfairly from news content shared on our platforms, when the reverse is true,” the blog post said. “News outlets voluntarily share content on Facebook and Instagram to expand their audiences and help their bottom line.”

Canadian users of Meta’s platforms will still be able to access news content online by visiting news outlets’ websites directly or by signing up for their subscriptions and apps.

Learning Machine and GC Talent Cloud Issue Blockchain Credentials to Canada’s Free Agents

Treasury Board Secretariat issues Blockcerts–self-verifying, recipient-owned digital credentials–to demonstrate proof of qualifications for public service

    Press Release

    updated: Jun 24, 2019

As part of a one-year talent mobility project being conducted by Talent Cloud at the Treasury Board Secretariat of Canada (TBS) in partnership with Learning Machine, Government of Canada ‘Free Agents’ have been issued Blockcerts, blockchain-anchored credentials, as a permanent and self-owned record of the skills they demonstrated to be selected into the program. This is a first-of-its-kind project for skill validation in the Government of Canada.

View and verify an example Blockcert, courtesy of Free Agent Brian Double, here (shared with permission).

Free Agents are government employees who have been recruited based on attributes valuable to problem-solving in the public sector. Members of the program are free to move about the federal government, choosing deployments in other departments based on their own skills and interest. Free Agents have skills assessed by their Talent Managers upon entry into the program, but the record of these assessments are difficult to access and share.

To test the concept that digital credentials issued by the Government of Canada may be owned by the recipient, and verified by anyone in the world for free, Free Agents have been issued an official Blockcert credential that captures all of the data and criteria related to their acceptance into the Free Agent program. This includes the date of acceptance, the attributes that were assessed, the names of the Free Agent Talent Managers who accepted them into the program along with other relevant metadata. Free Agents now have a way to easily demonstrate a trusted record of their skills as they move about the federal government doing project-based work.

Trusted digital credentials are a big part of the future of work. Blockcerts are a step towards a global ecosystem for open and dynamic digital credentials. This proof of concept demonstrates that fully portable, trusted digital credentials are not a distant vision, but a reality today.

“Thankfully, proving yourself with paper or checking a database is now in the past. Using Blockcerts with your own digital credentials, you can prove your identity and your qualifications in an independent, secure, privacy-respecting way,” says Alex Benay, Chief Information Officer of Canada.

“Government of Canada’s Free Agents now have Blockcert credentials as official records of their skills in a format that is secure, shareable, and easily verifiable. The Blockcerts pilot program, being led by Talent Cloud, empowers Free Agents by enabling them to own and easily share their official and secure credentials that can be instantaneously verified by anyone, thereby enhancing workforce mobility and marketability,” says Kausar N. Samli, Learning Machine Senior Vice President of Global Services.

  • Top Canadian Law Firms’ Courtroom Performance Revealed by Legal Analytics Software

Top Canadian Law Firms’ Courtroom Performance Revealed by Legal Analytics Software

    Press Release

    updated: Sep 19, 2017

A Miami-based software firm is causing ripples in the Canadian legal sector with the release of its free Canada Courts Report 2017, which ranks the nation’s top lawyers and law firms based on their courtroom performance. Although data from the courts analyzed in the survey, which range from the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal (CHRT) to the Territorial Court of Yukon, has been publicly available for many years, Premonition is the first company to create a comprehensive, searchable archive of these records. The Canada Courts Report ranks the most successful litigators in each court according to the percentage of their cases won over the past three years, providing the public with a taste of the deeper analysis available to Premonition clients.

“What we’re talking about here is translating the performance of lawyers and firms into hard statistics,” says Premonition CEO and Co-Founder Guy Kurlandski. “For literally centuries, legal services have been a credence goodbuyers make their best guess based on a firm’s marketing and reputation, and win or lose, never really know whether they made a good purchase or not. We aim to put an end to this unfair system.”

“The rankings you see in the Canada Courts Report are fairly basic,” continues Premonition’s other Co-Founder and CIO Toby Unwin. “All they tell you is who has won the highest percentage of their cases in a given court. Once you dig a little further into the numbers though, you start to get a picture of why certain attorneys win more than others.”

One of the value propositions Premonition mentions over and over again in their materials is the centrality of the relationship between a lawyer and a given judge. The impact of judicial preference on Canadian court decisions has long been anecdotally testified to, but quantitative research has been limited by the sheer scale of data involved. Now, with a few keystrokes, Premonition can identify outlier attorneys who massively over- or under-perform before certain judges. Internationally, the company has claimed this lawyer-judge dynamic accounts for a 30.7% skew in case outcomes.

“If a modest investment in the legal ‘scouting’ we provide can turn a corporate client’s litigation portfolio from a 50/50 proposition to an 80/20, that represents a potential savings in the millions,” Unwin notes.

Canada is Premonition’s most recent national expansion, joining operations in the United States, United Kingdom, India, Australia and more. Per its report, the firm is currently seeking a Canadian representative. Thanks to the controversial response its previous domestic rankings have provoked among attorneys who don’t find themselves listed, local partners like Premonition UK’s Ian Dodd often find themselves making industry headlines.

“There were a fair number of upset barristers when we released our first Courts Report for the UK,” says Dodd, “but before long I was taking calls every day from firms with clients who demanded performance data before putting money on the table. Now it’s ‘the new black,’ and Premonition’s right in the thick of it.”

Premonition’s Canada Courts Report 2017 is available now as a free download at https://www.premonition.ai/reports.

Island Librarians Take Home Big Awards

Librarian-led Correctional Facility Book Club and A Librarians on the Radio Podcast Take Home Two International Awards by American Library Association

    Press Release

    May 13, 2016

On May 4th, 2016, two librarians from Nanaimo, B.C., received notification from the American Library Association (ALA) that programs under their direction are recipients of the 2016 American Library Association (ALA) Presidential Citation for Innovative International Library Projects.

The international award heralds from the largest Library Association in North America, which recognizes innovative contributions to international librarianship. The American Library Association awarded five projects in total. Two of those projects awarded belonged to librarians at the Nanaimo Harbourfront branch of Vancouver Island Regional Library.

“This recognition is a testament to the creative and out-of-the-box staff at Vancouver Island Regional Library who are busy doing incredible work in our communities. I am truly proud.”

Rosemary Bonanno, Executive Director, Vancouver Island Regional Library

The programs, Vancouver Island Regional Library’s Nanaimo Correctional Centre initiative, under the direction of Jennifer Seper, and the Vancouver Island Regional Library “Librarians on the Radio” co-hosted by Justin Unrau, Emily Orr and Patrick Siebold, received individual awards.

The 2016 American Library Association (ALA) Presidential Citation for Innovative International Library Projects recognizes innovative contributions to international librarianship and is presented by the ALA President at the ALA Annual Conference in June, 2016 in Orlando Florida.

“This recognition is a testament to the creative and out-of-the-box staff at Vancouver Island Regional Library who are busy doing incredible work in our communities.” Says Rosemary Bonanno, Executive Director of Vancouver Island Regional Library. “I am truly proud.”

    About the Two Programs

The Vancouver Island Regional Library Correctional Centre program started in April of 2015, with a partnership between VIRL and the Nanaimo Correctional Centre. The project, initiated by Jennifer Seper, began with a simple plan to improve the existing library at the centre but then grew to include a book club and a pending agreement that will allow inmates to request specific materials directly from the library.

The Nanaimo Correctional Centre (NCC) is a medium security prison that houses offenders from across the province. Under direction by Jennifer Seper, VIRL approached the centre with a partnership as a means of increasing access to materials and in effort to increase literacy levels in an otherwise marginalized area of the community. Statistics show that the vast majority of the incarcerated struggle with literacy and that those that increase their literacy rates while incarcerated have a lower recidivism rate, making literacyfocused programs essential

Book club discussion are a good match with the therapeutic values of the inmate program as it gives inmates the opportunity to learn how to discuss their feelings and opinions and to accept differing opinions from others in a no-confrontational way. Titles read so far include The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, The Golden Spruce: A True Story of Myth, Madness and Greed (which all 9 members loved), and The Ocean at the End of the Lane which was universally loathed by all, but the facilitator. Feedback from the group and the prison wardens has been very positive. One inmate told Jennifer that “I asked my mom to guess what I was doing while I am away. She guessed a bunch of things and when I finally told her I was in a book club, she just could not believe it. She was so happy.”

Librarians on the Radio is an ongoing radio show and podcast hosted by Justin Unrau, Emily Orr, and Patrick Siebold, which partners Vancouver Island Regional Library with long running CHLY 101.7 radio show, Changes: The Show on Sustainability. The purpose of Librarians on the Radio is to discuss library and information issues in the wider Vancouver Island community. The show connects listeners to more than just their local branches: It showcases librarians with passions and interests and connects both library users and non-library users to the larger library world. Non-library users learn about issues librarians care about in their communities and hopefully find some connections and break some stereotypes. Library users learn about programs, events and tools some of which they never knew the library offered.

Librarians on the Radio goes beyond VIRL’s local service area to interview authors and librarians in the library world like Scott Bonner, the director of the Ferguson Public Library in Missouri; BC Civil Liberties Association expert Micheal Vonn on the 2015 Canadian federal election; and a Freedom to Read Week 2015 special with author Irvine Welsh. Making past episodes available as podcasts has increased the reach of the program beyond the community radio listener base.

The idea for the show was conceived by VIRL librarian Jason Kuffler in 2012 and was started with librarians Anthony Martin and Lara Wright in January of 2013. The show started out as a 15 minute segment but later moved to an hour once a month. In 2014, the current producer Justin Unrau joined the show and brought his radio journalism training in to modify the show’s approach. The biggest enhancement has been the creation of regular segments Beeps and Boops with co-host Emily Orr talking about information technology issues, and literary (/pulpy scifi) Bookfighting with Patrick Siebold. The team also offers Librarians Off the Radio which includes supplemental podcast content to the live radio show.

Tune into Librarians on the Radio at CHLY 101.7 FM or online at virl.bc.ca. Past episodes are available at http://virl.bc.ca/news/radio/archive.

Ontario: Gateway Casinos London embarks on $36.6M renovation, rebranding project | Yogonet International

Canadian gaming and entertainment operator Gateway Casinos is doubling down on its location at the Western Fair District in London, Ontario. Construction has now begun on a CAD 50+ million ($36.6 million) overhaul of Gateway Casinos London, which will see the gaming floor expanded from 70,000 to 84,000 square feet.

The property’s modernization plan is set to renovate the entire facility into what officials call a modern gaming and dining experience. The casino expects the renovation to finish in late 2025 and about 100 new jobs to be added as a result.

An expanded gaming floor, additional tables, adding two great new restaurants, our Match Eatery and Public House signature brand, as well as our Chow Lucky Noodle House,” said General Manager Darcy Romanin when asked what the new project will encompass.

Specifically, Match Eatery and Public House will be separated from the casino floor to allow diners of all ages, reports CTV News London. It will also feature a heated patio and a performance stage featuring local musicians.

The project will also see an expanded gaming floor featuring 891 slot machines and 18 live gaming tables, wrapped around a new centralized bar. Meanwhile, the exterior will be revamped to feature the “Cascades” brand and a new centralized entrance.

Coun. Susan Stevenson welcomed the reinvestment in what’s becoming the Old East Village’s entertainment district. “Most importantly, we want to be a regional destination. We’ve already got what’s happening at 100 Kellogg [Lane]. This is a perfect next step,” Stevenson told CTV News.

The Western Fair District almost lost the casino to a vacant property on Wonderland Road South a few years ago. However, Gateway’s decision to stay put secures another long-term tenant on the city-owned property.

The development of the Cascades Casino at Western Fair District will be great for London, customers will benefit from new and expanded entertainment and food experiences,” Reg Ash, CEO of Western Fair District, told the cited source. “Everyone will benefit from the enhanced economic impact for London and region through jobs and visitors to our city.”

While the property will undergo extensive work as part of its update, Romanin said construction activities should go mostly unnoticed by casino customers. The project will take about twenty-seven months to complete, but Gateway Casinos divided that into five phases to not impact the customers visiting the gaming floor.

FanDuel teams up with the Canadian Football League as its first authorized operator | Yogonet International

FanDuel has entered into a new partnership with the Canadian Football League (CFL). As part of the deal, the Flutter Entertainment-owned brand will become the league’s first authorized gaming operator and an official sportsbook partner.

Ontario customers will be able to place bets on the CFL through FanDuel, which secured a license in the Canadian province ahead of the launch of legal sports betting in April last year.

Betting markets will include in-game player props, such as anytime touchdown scorer, and a range of futures bets, including for the winner of the 110th Grey Cup. The CFL season began on June 8 and will run through the end of October.

“Responsible sports wagering is another way for our league to further its connection with our fans,” said CFL chief commercial officer Tyler Mazereeuw. “In addition to taking in our fun, fast and entertaining brand of football, some fans may wish to engage with the game on a more personal level. We’re excited to work with FanDuel to deliver an exciting and innovative betting experience.”

“We are very proud to kick off our partnership with the CFL, a league with some of Canada’s most passionate fans,” said Dale Hooper, GM of FanDuel Canada. “The CFL is a Canadian institution, and we are excited to provide sports bettors with an industry-leading experience.”

Hooper also highlighted the parties’ commitment to responsible gambling under the new deal. “Responsible gaming is the foundation of FanDuel’s core values,” he stated. “It is built into everything the company does – from employee training, to in-product features and marketing strategy.”

The deal follows FanDuel’s track of consistently leveraging partnerships with sports leagues in North America, including its partnership with the MLB. The sportsbook is the co-exclusive sports betting partner of the league and uses MLB branding across its marketing campaigns.

FanDuel is also an official sports betting partner of the NFL. The operator’s relationship with TSN makes it a natural fit to work closely with the CFL, as the two parties formed a multi-year partnership in April 2022. At the time, FanDuel became the official sportsbook partner for TSN, which broadcasts CFL games across Canada.

  • GiG to power Goldenpark’s entry into Ontario’s online gaming market | Yogonet International

GiG to power Goldenpark’s entry into Ontario’s online gaming market | Yogonet International

iGaming technology provider Gaming Innovation Group (GiG) has announced a new agreement for its platform to support Goldenpark‘s entry into the regulated online market in Ontario. This expansion builds upon their already existing partnership and marks Goldenpark’s first venture outside of the Iberian peninsula.

As an established GiG partner, Goldenpark will look to build on its online foothold in Spain and a recently launched license in Portugal. With five GiG partners already either live or in development in Ontario, Goldenpark will look to leverage GiG’s experience in the region to grow and deliver a localized and personalized customer experience.

GiG stated that it has placed “significant value” on the strength of harvesting relationships with its partners, with open, bespoke and tailorable technology, and access to over 30 regulated markets with 8 more in the development pipeline, “placing brand control in the operators’ hands for the first time.”

The Ontario Province’s market opened in April 2022, and has since generated an estimated C$35.6billion ($26.41 billion) in total wagers as of the end of July 2023. It has also seen approximately C$1.4billion ($1.04 billion) in total gaming revenue and over 1.6 million monthly players covered by 40-plus licensed operators, according to iGaming Ontario (iGO).

    Marcel Elfersy, CCO of GiG

Marcel Elfersy, CCO of GiG, said: “The Ontario online market is a significantly strong one for GiG, and as a valued existing partner we’re delighted to be able to take Goldenpark into North America for the first time. It’s a testament to the strength and flexibility of our offering, and the relationship we’ve built with Goldenpark that we are able to explore and grow new opportunities together.”

José Giacomelli, Consejero Delegado of MGA Online Division, said: “One of Goldenpark’s biggest challenges for 2024 is the launch of our Ontario operation. Ontario represents a vibrant and rapidly growing market, and we believe that together with GiG, Goldenpark will meet its goals.

This agreement signifies not just a geographical expansion, but also an evolution in how both companies envision the future, seize opportunities, and tackle challenges. As always, our core commitment is to our customers and to delivering top-tier solutions, and we are confident that this partnership will allow us to further elevate that standard.”
