Two stranded hikers spent a “cold and wet” night after climbing a canyon to escape a flash flood, Arizona rescuers reported.

The 19-year-old women failed to return from a planned overnight trip to West Clear Creek near Camp Verde on Friday, Oct. 10, the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Rescuers learned one of the hikers sent a text message about 2 p.m. Friday reporting they had to climb a canyon to escape a flash flood, deputies said.

The women were trying to return to the trail with a limited water supply, rescuers said.

Deputies found their vehicle at the trailhead but weather conditions prevented a helicopter from searching for them, rescuers said.

The next morning, rescuers made contact with the hikers via emergency text and learned they were all right but “cold and wet,” deputies said. They were able to determine the location of the hikers, and improved weather allowed the helicopter to fly.

The helicopter crew found the women and brought them back to their vehicle, rescuers said.

Camp Verde is about a 90-mile drive northeast from Phoenix.
