I Just Got Back From New York—5 Real-Life Trends I Saw Everywhere

    [ad_1]

Every trip back to New York is a treat. Simply put, New Yorkers’ sartorial instincts are unrivaled. They’re usually some of the first to adopt emerging trends, so any outing to a restaurant or Duane Reade is like interacting with a living mood board.

Recently, I went back to the city and couldn’t help but notice how put-together everyone looked. Among the various pieces I observed on its dwellers, there seemed to be five standout staples that consistently popped up among the most stylish women. Of course, upon returning to L.A., I immediately began looking for these to add to my very own closet. The items in question range from fresh runway trends to edgier streetwear staples to tried-and-true foundational pieces. Essentially, they reveal how New York fashion is a grab bag of eclectic styles and tastes. For a full list of the real-life trends New Yorkers can’t stop wearing, keep scrolling.

Fashion People in Paris Still Wear This Classic Item With Basics

If it’s an effortless and chic outfit idea we’re looking for, the fashion crowd in Paris is one group we routinely turn to. Because yes, many in this set have perfectly mastered that je ne sais quoi. Given their no-fuss approach to fashion, it’s those versatile items that consistently make up some of their chicest looks. Well, there’s actually one specific staple Parisians have been wearing for years (you may remember this popular style) that is basically a classic at this point. I’m referring to slip skirts.

The pretty skirt silhouette can be styled with so many different pieces. After scrolling through the Instagram feeds of some of our favorite French influencers, it became evident that elevated basics are the go-to picks to style with slip skirts.

J.Crew, Abercrombie, and Banana Republic Are Cool Again—See My Current Wish List

    [ad_1]

J.Crew, Banana Republic, and Abercrombie becoming the favored shopping destinations of the fashion set certainly weren’t on my 2022 bingo card. But as always, the industry always likes to keep me on my toes. I can’t scroll through TikTok and Instagram without seeing an influencer, editor, or just an average consumer posting about their latest purchase from one of the three. And with every post I see, I become increasingly impressed. Our team has even gone the lengths of testing various pieces from the retailers and has given nothing but high praises for the fit and quality.

Out of both professional and personal curiosity, I went through every single page on each site and ended up with a thorough fall wish list. Everything below is not only on-trend but is also basic enough to be worn for years. Last but not least, all the pieces look triple the price. If you don’t believe me, keep scrolling and see for yourself. (And be prepared to click “add to cart” along the way.)

  • Bottega Veneta’s $820 Earrings Are Going Viral—9 Alternatives Just As Stunning

Bottega Veneta’s $820 Earrings Are Going Viral—9 Alternatives Just As Stunning

    [ad_1]

    Photo:

    Jean Catuffe/Getty Images

Earlier this year fashion editors waited with bated breath for Matthieu Blazy’s debut collection for Bottega Veneta. Building on Daniel Lee’s modern vision, Blazy took things a step further with the addition of relaxed staples like denim jeans and white tanks, along with exceptionally tailored suiting and dresses. The brand is no stranger to viral trend moments—it often sets them—and for the fall-winter 2022 season it was clear that Blazy had a hit on his hands. But the buzzy piece in question wasn’t a handbag or shoe for once, it was a pair of earrings.

You can always be sure of a standout accessory moment from Bottega Veneta, and the brand made good on its reputation following a paparazzi capture courtesy of Kendall Jenner. The model stepped out in a full look from the collection, topping off the pale yellow dress with a pair of chunky gold earrings. From then, it didn’t take long before the images found their target audience on TikTok, with most users taking note of Jenner’s larger-than-life drop earrings. Made from silver, the teardrop-shaped baubles almost have the appearance of a hoop when worn on the ear. The earrings come in both silver and gold-plated versions starting at $780 for the medium size, going upwards of $1,350 for the large version. Despite their hefty price tag, as with most items that garner a lot of internet buzz, the earrings virtually sell out every time they’re restocked.

But a true editor never lets an out-of-stock notification ruin the fun, so I found some equally gorgeous (and less expensive) alternatives that you don’t have to wait to buy. For a full run-down on the viral trend, and to shop some great dupes, keep scrolling.

  • I Thought I Banished These 6 Jewelry Trends, But They’re Surging Again

I Thought I Banished These 6 Jewelry Trends, But They’re Surging Again

    [ad_1]

It’s always a surprise when previously forgotten-about items return to the spotlight, and this winter, six such jewelry pieces are having a sort of renaissance. Unlike clothes and shoes, my jewelry collection tends to stay pretty constant from season to season and year to year. Of course, it goes through its own phases, but on the whole, the turnover is much slower than anything I keep on a hanger or folded into a dresser drawer. For that reason, if I phase out a jewelry trend from my arsenal, I usually expect it to stay that way. Winter 2022 has other plans, though.

Across the runways, I spotted six major winter jewelry trends that are giving me a strong case of déjà vu. I definitely dabbled in each of these years ago and had since banished them from my jewelry box—or so I thought. Sure enough, all signs are pointing to their grand return to style. For instance, I’m typically a gold girl all the way, and any other metals pretty much dwindled from my view, but a new wave of sculptural silver pieces stands to change my staunch stance. For a complete look into this season’s trending accoutrements, see the six reemerging themes that just might surprise you (as they did for me).

Welcome to Sweater Season—5 Trends That Are Out and 5 That Are In

    [ad_1]

It just doesn’t feel right to think about sweaters when it’s still 90ºF in the shade and everyone on your Instagram feed seems to be on the Amalfi Coast. Trust me—I get it. But as of yesterday, it’s officially fall, and chances are you’ll soon find yourself reaching for a sweater. I, for one, am ready for that after five months of heat and humidity. (I live in the South…)

Sweaters are one of those items that you’ll probably want to invest in classic versions of before trends, but sometimes the classics become trends and vice versa. So let’s talk about fall’s sweater trends, shall we? There are five styles that are quickly emerging as the top trends of the season, and there are also five that I’d advise stowing away for now. (Chances are they’ll be back.)

Scroll on to shop fall’s most important sweater trends and find out which are taking a back seat this season.

  • British Women Politely Laugh Every Time Americans Wear These 4 Items

British Women Politely Laugh Every Time Americans Wear These 4 Items

    [ad_1]

It may be entirely un-British to laugh about anyone else’s style choices (we Brits are far too polite for that), but I will say that as a Brit living in Los Angeles for over 12 years, I’ve picked up on certain American sartorial tendencies that I’ve found rather distinct and funny. I recall being taken aback on my first brunch date in Santa Monica where everyone looked like they had just stepped out of the gym (minus the sweat, of course). This is a far cry from the UK, where you’d never meet friends for lunch in yoga pants or sports gear if you aren’t actually planning to do sports. (Full disclosure: 12 years later, I now look like I go to the gym too.)

While we love expressing our adoration for classic French style here on Who What Wear, it’s the Brits who take more style risks, exude an edgier aesthetic, and are decidedly individual in their style choices. British Vogue’s shopping editor, Joy Montgomery, describes some of the key characteristics of British style: “Eccentricity would have to be at the top of the list. While we marvel at New Yorker’s professional polish or L.A.’s laid-back cool, we Brits possess a certain nerdy quirkiness that manifests in chunky, hand-knitted jumpers, heritage fabrics, and off-beat accessories—we championed ‘ugly’ trends way before they hit the mainstream. Our muses include Alexa Chung, Vivienne Westwood, and Cara Delevingne—all wonderfully weird in their own ways yet also undeniably cool.”

So what are the pieces that Americans wear that Brits think are a tad funny? Scroll below for my firsthand fashion observations.

  • Florence Pugh Bravely Wore the Pants I Wouldn’t Dare Wear to the Airport

Florence Pugh Bravely Wore the Pants I Wouldn’t Dare Wear to the Airport

    [ad_1]

I use the term “bravely” quite loosely here, but in the context of airport outfits, Florence Pugh’s is just that. In my personal opinion, airport outfits live and die by what pants you wear. Choose a pair that’s uncomfortable or annoying in the least and you may quickly have regrets while waiting in line at security. Pugh, who was photographed landing at LAX this week, wore pants that I’d wear in life, but certainly not to the airport.

So what made these pants an airport “no” for me? Nothing more than the fact that they’re white. While her trousers look quite comfortable to me, the fact that they’re so light in color pretty much guarantees that I’d get them dirty in an airport and on the plane. If you’re confident that you can avoid this fate, I’m impressed and I encourage you to wear a pair of light-colored pants, because Pugh does look incredibly chic. I, on the other hand, will be sticking to dark colors that’ll hide the inevitable coffee spills and scuff marks.

Read on to see Pugh’s brave (but also very stylish) airport outfit, and shop pants I’d wear to the airport instead.

EmRata Wore a $40 Zara Skort With the Boots on Every Editor’s Fall Wish List

    [ad_1]

Once you decide you love something, it’s psychologically proven that you’ll see it everywhere. It’s called the frequency illusion (kind of), and yes, it’s real. Since I, like so many of my fellow editors, am fully smitten with point-toe, knee-high boots, I’m not surprised that the exact style has become practically unavoidable in my everyday life, whether I’m working on a story or walking around the city. But even with all that exposure, I’m convinced the most recent time I spotted a pair was my chicest sighting yet.

For an especially autumnal day in NYC, Emily Ratajkowski debuted the perfect fall outfit, which included a brown moto jacket worn over a black bodysuit and combined with a khaki-colored $40 Zara micro skort and knife-sharp knee-high boots. To accent the outfit, she added a vintage Dior Saddle Bag, Fendi sunglasses, and a wide belt.

Clearly, the universe is trying to tell me something, and it has everything to do with the 14 pairs of dangerously tempting point-toe, knee-high boots below. Scroll down to see EmRata’s look and shop them all.

  • It’s Officially Over for These Shoe Trends

It’s Officially Over for These Shoe Trends

    [ad_1]

Trends come and go at the speed of light. One day, everyone’s wearing their “dad” sneakers, and the next, it’s all about ’80s throwback pairs (or so it seems). With new shoe styles emerging all the time, it can be hard to keep up. But for anyone curious to check in with their current shoe collection, we’re sharing the status on the trends we can safely pause buying and which have taken their place.

Naturally, as editors, we jump at the chance to share the best styles with you whenever a new trend bubbles up. If there’s a new shoe trend, you can be sure that we’ll be all over it, from the new It brands all the fashion girls are wearing to the pieces we’ve told you will sell out first next month. That said, the following styles are those we’ve simply noticed have been losing steam lately.

If you’re curious to find out which are the best shoe styles, according to our editors, and which styles are slowing down, keep reading. As always, though, I recommend holding onto pieces that you love because if they fit into your personal wardrobe you shouldn’t stop wearing them just because of the trend cycles.

  • Cropped Pants Are Out, Puddle Pants Are In—8 Celeb Looks That Prove It

Cropped Pants Are Out, Puddle Pants Are In—8 Celeb Looks That Prove It

    [ad_1]

Five years ago, if someone told me that cropped pants would be passé in just a few years, I don’t know that I would have believed it. At 5’4″, I’m used to spending a good amount of time and money at the tailor or shopping for pants with an inseam of 28″ or less. But now the year is 2022 and cropped pants are feeling like more and more of a distant memory. In its place are puddle pants, and celebrities have been solidifying their importance more and more every day.

Puddle pants are pretty much exactly how they sound: ultra-long trousers (or jeans) that pool around the ankles, dragging on the floor. Pants dragging on the floor isn’t really music to my ears, but a trend is a trend, and you can always wear heels to minimize the dragging. But some celebs, such as Zoë Kravitz, are embracing the puddle and even wearing flats with the trend. Others, such as Kate Middleton and Rihanna, are wearing them with their highest heels. Whatever your shoe preference, puddle pants are shaping up to be one of the biggest pant trends of 2022. Scroll on to see which stylish celebs are wearing them and shop my favorite puddly pairs.

  • Sorry, But These 7 Winter Handbag Trends Didn’t Quite Make the Cut This Year

Sorry, But These 7 Winter Handbag Trends Didn’t Quite Make the Cut This Year

    [ad_1]

Normally, when you think of winter fashionhandbags aren’t the first things that come to mind. Boots, outerwear, and dangerously soft accessories maybe. But purses? Not so much. Nonetheless, many of us will carry one or more every single day of the season, just as we all in the other three. And while some people might be okay with ignoring our handbags from now until spring, I’m not, and neither are my fellow editors.

In an effort to draw some attention toward handbags this winter, I called on said editors to find out which styles they’re planning to let hibernate throughout the colder months and which will become their new go-tos. And just as I suspected, they each had plenty to say. See? I’m not the only one ready to rally behind the handbag space during its off season.

I Hate to Tell You This, But These 7 Handbag Trends Are on Their Way Out

    [ad_1]

I know the saying goes “diamonds are forever,” but forget diamonds. In my mind, handbags are forever. All you have to do is know when to hang some styles up for a few seasons in favor of other, fresher-feeling alternatives. (To keep their shape, stuff them with newspaper before sending them to storage for the time being.)

This fall, I’ve noticed a larger-than-normal shift in terms of bag trends, with many of the tried-and-true favorites from the last few seasons starting to feel stale when compared to the flashy new ones that designers promoted on the fall runways. Prada’s once ubiquitous nylon Re-Edition bags have been replaced by its retro bowler and briefcase-style bags, while shockingly micro purses have been swapped out for shockingly large ones (because practicality for fall is always trendy).

While it’s sad to say goodbye to the bags that have carried our most prized possessions every day for the last few years, the time has come for a changing of the guard. Ahead, see which styles are best to store away this season and the ones worth replacing them with.

I Work at a Thrift Store—People in NYC Are Getting Rid of These 5 Things

    [ad_1]

For the past few weeks, I have been in an extreme state of closet clean-out. Living in a small New York City apartment is never easy when you’re an avid shopper, and I’ve hit my limit. I have a hard time letting go of things that I once loved or never got around to wearing, so this has led to multiple rounds of self-interventions. My first round of cleaning out my closet was very light, and I quickly realized I had gone too easy on myself when I still did not have the room for the winter coats that I’ll need to move into my home sooner rather than later. This entire conundrum led me to visit my local consignment shop more often than I ever have before.

During one of my recent appointments, one of the store managers explained to me the process of deciding whether they would be able to sell something or ask the customer to take it back with them. As the team members explained their process to me, I realized that this was something worth reporting on. Our most recent conversation included illuminating revelations, such as the death of Yeezys and the obvious fact that a lot of skinny jeans have been dropped off as of late. Below, you’ll find the five things that Buffalo Exchange employees told me were making their way past the selling point and into the donation bins. Let’s see if you can guess what they said.

Kendall and Kylie Just Made the Case For This “Ugly” Shoe Trend Still Being Cool

    [ad_1]

Kendall and Kylie Jenner probably don’t always think alike, but when it comes to a certain shoe trend, they clearly do. And since this shoe trend was wildly popular last fall and winter (some might say that it peaked then), I thought you might be interested in its fate.

The shoe trend in question is chunky lug-sole shoes, which you probably own a pair or two of, given that practically every new shoe during the fall and winter of 2021 came with a lug sole. Brands both high-end to affordable all jumped on board with the chunky-shoe trend, and I, for one, have been wondering if it would stick around for another season. If you trust the fashion clout of Kylie and Kendall Jenner (which you honestly maybe should), the answer is yes, the trend is sticking around.

While in New York earlier this week, the Jenner sisters went to brunch wearing black, chunky-soled shoes. Kendall paired hers with flared pants while Kylie wore hers with puddle jeans. I find it to be good news that such influential celebrities are wearing last year’s biggest shoe trend, because who wants to invest in anything, only to find that it’s “out” a year later?

With that, scroll on to shop the best lug-sole shoes to add to your collection (since they’re still cool).

6 Dated Winter Accessories I’m Finally Ditching

During the many, many months of warm weather (I live in the South), I honestly kind of forget about my winter clothes and accessories. (Out of sight, out of mind, right?) But as soon as I see the 50s in the Weather app, I’m digging through bins of temporarily forgotten scarves and hats.

Something that I notice each year is that my taste in winter accessories really changes, perhaps because I’ve gravitated toward trendy ones in the past. When I think about it, that’s kind of the case this year too. I suppose the reason for this is that winter outfits can be a bit dull and the best way to make them less so is with accessories.

This Is the #1 Flat-Shoe Trend Right Now, and I Love These 24 Pairs the Most

Like many of you, I’ve retired most of my heels in recent years for, well, obvious reasons. Comfort is now my top priority when getting dressed, and I’m especially discerning when it comes to which shoes I’m going to wear. It’s no surprise then to see that a number of comfortable (but still very chic) flat-shoe trends have emerged this year. The number one among them? Loafers. Maybe it’s because they add a polished vibe to any outfit, maybe it’s because they’re practical and easy to wear, or maybe it’s because they’re a perennial favorite that will never really go out of style. Whichever the reason, they’re the dominating flat-shoe trend of the moment, and I’m so here for it.

If you’ve been eyeing the trend but haven’t found a pair you love just yet, then look no further than the 24 best pairs of loafers for women that I’ve pulled together here. I’ve curated a selection from some of my favorite retailers, and the styles range from on-trend chunky loafers to pretty chain-embellished loafers and classic penny loafers. In other words, you’re sure to find a pair you love, no matter your taste, budget, or any other factor. I know I’ve already fallen in love with each of these.
