  • The Tomato-Girl Aesthetic Is My Summer Vibe—30 Items I’m Buying Thanks to TikTok

The Tomato-Girl Aesthetic Is My Summer Vibe—30 Items I’m Buying Thanks to TikTok

    [ad_1]

Now, before you crucify me, I have to admit: I didn’t come up with this name.

It only came about in my mind when, after a long day of lounging around Central Park during a day off, a friend pointed at my shoulders and without hesitation, said “Girl, you dead look like a tomato.”

For a Gen Z crowd brought up around peers obsessed with non-veggie-things-called-veggies (see: Lil Yachty’s hit Broccoli and the all-seeing eggplant emoji), the comparison didn’t shock me in the slightest. My shoulders did, in fact, look like a tomato—overwhelmingly crimson and slightly protruded. What surprised me was the fact my friend stated after: “Not you literally being in your tomato girl era.”

Every summer, it seems like TikTok choses to hyper-fixate on a specific sartorial subsect: the rise of quiet luxury, coastal grandmother, vanilla girl, ballet-core, weird girl aesthetic, cottage-core and a multitude of other stylistic choices can all be attributed to the Great Big Clock App in the sky. This summer, the aesthetic of the moment is one that resembles Italian grandmothers’ dinner tablecloths, has a penchant for Campari sodas, and can’t get enough of the color red. (And, if you’re like me, doesn’t know how to use sunscreen properly).

Enter: the tomato girl. She’s is another iteration of the carefree, breezy coastal style we’ve come to associate with trendy travel destinations of the last few years—particularly, the Amalfi coast and Sicily. Call it the White Lotus effect or one too many Robyn Italian Summer jeans sold by Lisa Says Gah, but the fact of the matter remains the same: everyone wants to dress like pasta toppings now: olives, anchovies, and tomatoes are all on the menu. After the California-based label released this year’s version of their cult food print inspired by Spanish tapas, there was no stopping the tomato girl from taking over.

  • I Haven’t Spent More Than $150 on Clothing in Six Months—Here’s How I Did It

I Haven’t Spent More Than $150 on Clothing in Six Months—Here’s How I Did It

    [ad_1]

Let’s play a little numbers game; how much more clothing do you think the average person owns now compared to 15 years ago? Five percent? Twenty-five? Sixty percent? Hate to break it to you, but it’s the latter. We’re not only buying more clothing than previous generations, but we’re wearing it less too. It’s a terrifying thought, especially considering fast fashion’s negative impacts on the world. From contributing the highest carbon emissions globally to causing micro-plastic pollution in the ocean, the effects are endless.

I think about it often, especially as someone in the industry’s trenches who has to grapple with the knowledge of this impact while also deeply loving fashion. I can’t say I possess some moral high ground, but I will say I’ve made subtle shifts to be more sustainably minded in my own life. Part of that shift has come from prioritizing investing in staples and shopping from eco-friendly brands, but the other half has come from using the designer clothing rental service, Rent The Runway.

Since the start of the year, I’ve been using the clothing rental service to curb my spending and lessen my environmental impact. And while it’s not necessarily a solution to the larger issues that plague the industry—I’m one person, after all! Nevertheless, Rent the Runway has changed how we view fashion by destigmatizing second-hand clothing and creating a subculture that rewards re-wearing garments. It’s changing both the industry and individual closets, and to prove that point, I did an in-depth review of the clothing rental service.

In the first half of this story, you’ll hear from Sarah Tam, Rent the Runway’s chief merchant, about how the service works, her tips for renting clothing, and how the team has expanded its merchandising to include some of the coolest labels. In the latter half of the story, I’ve included a run-down of 10 looks I tried on from the service, the pros and cons of the platform, and my full review of the service overall. Without further ado…

  • The $6 H&M Accessory I’m Buying to Mimic Schiaparelli’s Couture Looks From Paris

The $6 H&M Accessory I’m Buying to Mimic Schiaparelli’s Couture Looks From Paris

    [ad_1]

Runway collections aren’t always the easiest things to mimic on the cheap, and I’m just referring to ready-to-wearCouture pieces are tenfold more difficult, with each garment, down to the littlest detail, being handmade and intentional. Never is this more apparent than at Schiaparelli’s shows, which, thanks to the brand’s creative director Daniel Roseberry and its founder Elsa Schiaparelli’s legacy, are famously extravagant and artistic. But for its fall/winter 2023/2024 couture show, which took place in Paris just days ago, one small aspect of the offering was an exception to the aforementioned belief, allowing me (and anyone with $6) the ability to get the Schiaparelli aesthetic immediately following the show.

The magic is in a stretchy, black headband, something that everyone knows you can buy on the cheap at a variety of venues, from Target to CVS to, in this case, H&M. At the Schiaparelli show, the simple hair accessories were worn close to the face, blocking any flyaways from even daring to surface, and styled with extravagant and inventive couture garments, from a black-and-white hooded minidress with a sculpture-like skirt to a delicate-lace gown fit with one of the most impressive corsets I’ve seen. Though these looks will be far more difficult to recreate IRL, they can serve as inspiration for the color palette and silhouettes that will make for the chicest headband-clad ensembles.

Below, see some of the most beautiful ensembles from Schiaparelli’s fall/winter 2023/2024 haute couture show and shop the $7 H&M stretchy headband that’ll help you get the look for less.

I’m in My 30s, and I’d Buy These 29 H&M Items in an Instant

    [ad_1]

H&M may have a reputation for being a “young” brand, but I firmly believe there are great options in its stock for people of all ages. (I said the same thing about Zara recently.) The truth is that H&M was one of my go-to brands in my early 20s. Now that I’m in my late 30s, my taste has certainly changed, but brands that have been around for a while, like H&M, have also changed, noticeably making an effort to diversify their offerings.

The great thing about H&M is that there are plenty of basics mixed in with the more trend-forward pieces. My wardrobe tends to be far more classic in my older age, so I appreciate retailers that give options that aren’t just here today, gone tomorrow. As you know, the H&M price points are incredibly reasonable, so it’s a great place to shop for trends that you want to try without spending a ton.

In case you were wondering what a 30-something fashion editor loves from H&M, here are my picks from the current inventory.

Paris Has the Best Dressed Frequent Flyers—6 Outfits I Saw and Will Copy ASAP

CDG (also known as Charles de Gaulle Airport) is a magical place. There are many airports in France, but this one hits different. It’s giving Wes Anderson in all the right ways with lots of natural light and a red color scheme. This place will humble you with its strict and pesky bag-weight requirements while inspiring you to be just as well-dressed as its inhabitants.

I recently spent a month living in France and took at least three visits to CDG during my time there, and I couldn’t stop raving about the frequent flyers who travel from this airport to my friends. They wear very cool wardrobe staples in a way that stands out among the sweatpants I often see among travelers at U.S. airports. Below, shop the aesthetic of the six types of travelers that I spotted at the airport and am officially obsessed with.

  • The Classic Color That’s Dominating Street Style During Couture Week In Paris

The Classic Color That’s Dominating Street Style During Couture Week In Paris

    [ad_1]

As much as people like to say that fashion people only wear black, that hasn’t really been the case in recent years. Sure, the classic color has shown its face during fashion weeks across the globe, but not at the same rate that it once did, when it clearly dominated street style and runway collections alike. Instead, loud, maximalist shades have, in many ways, taken over, as have hyper minimal hues like ivory, soft gray, and white. Black, in turn, has become less ubiquitous in many ways.

That all changed, though, in Paris this week during the Haute Couture shows, where the chicest members of the industry came to witness the unveiling of fashion’s most prestigious collections for fall 2023 from brands like Alaïa, Chanel, Schiaparelli, and Dior. There, black reigned supreme like it hasn’t in years, in the way of form-fitting dresses, ab-baring separates, sleek suiting, and more. Scroll down to see fashion people’s best black looks on the streets of Paris this week.

Sleuthing is My Specialty—10 It Items I Miraculously Found In Stock

    [ad_1]

The fact some companies source designer fashion items for customers, and most of the business is conducted via social media, says a lot about how people prefer to shop nowadays. Now that people can immediately post what they’re wearing on Instagram and TikTok for all the world to see, the It items everyone wants are far more popular. After all, the more we see something (and the harder it is to find), the more we want it. It’s from this series of events that an It item is born.

The problem is that finding these It items can feel impossible when they’re at their peak. But you can occasionally get lucky (or obsessively spend all your free time scouring the internet). As a fashion editor, it’s my job to know where to get everything that’s cool, but finding It items in stock just so happens to be one of my special skills. There’s no point in keeping all of these items to myself since I, unfortunately, can’t buy them all, so I’m sharing my most recent in-stock It item finds with you. You’re welcome.

  • This TikTok-Viral $30 Tote Bag Has Never Gone Out of Style in 78 Years

This TikTok-Viral $30 Tote Bag Has Never Gone Out of Style in 78 Years

    [ad_1]

As a millennial, I’m not ashamed to say I love TikTok as much as any Gen Zer out there. I was recently scrolling through the app while working from home—er, I mean, after work!—and came across not one, not two, but three different videos all referencing a classic, affordable staple: the L.L.Bean Boat & Tote Canvas Bag ($30). Don’t you love it when the algorithm figures you out?

Showing off a perfectly preppy outfit complete with an L.L.Bean tote, Tiktoker @jesicaelise said: “Very rarely will I let you forget that I spent way too much time at a private school.” I felt that one. The video went viral with nearly half a million views and over 500 comments, with users gushing over their love for the timeless, incredibly durable tote bag, which debuted back in 1944.

I also came across @aileciajones’s video and then finally @mippapiddleton‘s, in which she says she was influenced to buy the tote because of the two aforementioned videos. A lot of people on TikTok adore the monogram service that L.L.Bean’s website offers and have used it to write funny phrases on the bags instead of their names.

And if that wasn’t enough proof of its surging popularity, I’ll also add this: After I pitched this story, our social media manager said she just bought one last week because she saw an image on Pinterest of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy wearing it in 1997. Meanwhile, Chloë Sevigny and Reese Witherspoon carried—get it?—the bag into the 2010s.

While the bag is enjoying newfound fame on TikTok, it has clearly never gone out of style in the 78 years since it came on the market. Scroll down to see the TikToks and celebrity photos, and shop the bag for yourself.

I’m an Anti-Heels Kind of Girl, These Flat Shoes Will Look Great With Dresses

    [ad_1]

What can I say? I simply cannot handle wearing a pair of heels unless it’s a car-to-dinner-seat situation, especially if they are over 3 inches. Thankfully, the shoe gods have blessed me with a constant stream of flat shoe trends for almost a decade now—the last few years in particular. In fact, it’s rare as of late to see many of the fashion set out in the wild in heels. It’s now all about comfy shoes that don’t sacrifice style, even in the most formal of occasions. I wouldn’t have dared show up to an event like a wedding in anything but heels some years back, but times have definitely changed.

Such is the case when it comes to styling dresses in general. There are a plethora of flat shoes that go great with just about any style of dress now whether it be for an everyday outfit or the fanciest of party looks. Below, I share 6 of my top flat shoe styles to wear with dresses this season. From sneakers to ballet flats to a variety of sandals, there is a little something for everyone.

  • I’m Curious—What Do French Girls Buy on Amazon?

I’m Curious—What Do French Girls Buy on Amazon?

    [ad_1]

As a fashion editor and mom living in L.A who loves nothing more than instant gratification (aka two-day shipping) I tend to shop a lot on Amazon. From books to diapers and T-shirts to tea, I rack up a lot of mileage on my Amazon odometer, and my fellow editors can attest to shopping on the multi-brand platform as much as I do.

So last week, as I sat and wrote one of our beloved French-girl stories, it got me thinking, What exactly do stylish French women buy on Amazon (if anything at all)? Curious to find out more, I tapped into a number of fashion-forward French women that we love to feature here on Who What Wear to see what exactly they add to their Amazon carts on the regular.

Perhaps, not so surprisingly it seems French girls do not shop as much or as frequently as we do in the U.S for fashion items. One of the most popular items they do shop for on Amazon is books, along with home and decor items, beauty items, and niche products such as polaroid film (something that popped up several times). Intrigued? Read on to see what some of our favorite French girls shop on Amazon.

  • I Only Packed *One* Pair of Shoes For a Week In Canada—Here’s How I Styled Them

I Only Packed *One* Pair of Shoes For a Week In Canada—Here’s How I Styled Them

    [ad_1]

As much as I consider myself a travel-outfit and packing expert after years of trial and error, until recently, I’d never quite nailed the shoes aspect of the equation. I’d be comfortable all over, with a carry-on suitcase full of perfectly rolled up tops, pants, skirts, and dresses and an outfit I could wear comfortably for hours on end, and yet, my shoe game consistently felt off. Either I’d pack too many pairs or not enough, with most of the styles I prioritized ending up entirely impractical for the trip’s slated activities.

I never really put too much thought into this gap in my skill set until recently, when I found out that I’d be traveling 20+ hours in the span of one weekend, all by train, and only with one duffle-type carry-on. Knowing that my lack of travel prowess in the shoe department would only lead to pain and regret over the course of my trip, I set out to find a pair that would be comfortable, versatile, and chic for every occasion, including walking and standing around a miles-long race track given that my trip was dedicated to Canada’s Formula 1 race. And since F1 drivers travel the world more than almost anyone—with 23 races on the 2023 calendar in locations that also include Azerbaijan, Japan, Brazil, and Australia—I figured who better to ask for tips than them?

Specifically, I sought out Yuki Tsunoda and Nyck de Vries, teammates on the Scuderia Alpha Tauri F1 team that I traveled to the Emilia Romagna region of Italy with for the Imola Grand Prix last month. The Italian team, which is owned by Red Bull Racing’s performance clothing brand Alpha Tauri, happens to have a recurring collaboration with P448, the popular sneaker brand that has a factory just roughly 15 minutes away from the team’s. “It’s so nice,” says P448’s founder and CEO Wayne Kulkin. “Maybe there will be a sample ready and I can just drive it over.” The partnership—which began in 2022 and just saw a second collection launch earlier this month—means that Alpha Tauri’s drivers Tsunoda and De Vries wear their P448 sneakers to every single race, traveling in them on continent-crossing flights dozens of times per year. If the brand’s sneakers can pass their test, surely they’ll pass mine.
