  • How to Use Customer Feedback to Unlock Growth and Loyalty | Entrepreneur

How to Use Customer Feedback to Unlock Growth and Loyalty | Entrepreneur

    [ad_1]

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

It’s time to retire the “faster horses” quote, particularly if you want to stay competitive in 2024. The quote in question has been attributed to automobile mogul Henry Ford and goes something like this: “If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.” In essence, it’s a brush-off to customer sentiment and desire. It’s also completely off-mark in an era where buyers are getting exactly what they want from brands — and moving on if they don’t.

According to research from McKinsey and Company, consumers want a collaborative exchange with brands. Nearly three-quarters are asking for personalization in their interactions with companies. They’re also being selective with their splurges, making it essential for businesses to listen to their needs and respond accordingly. Brands that remain in tune with shoppers will win their loyalty. Brands that don’t? Well, they’ll be as outdated as the Model T.

In other words, marketers and customer service professionals have to put a premium on the importance of customer feedback. Customer feedback is one of the most valuable sources of information that any organization can glean. When you have real-time feedback from your buyers, you have the inside track to pivot rapidly. You can spot new sales opportunity ideas, chances for product or service improvement, better ways to keep in touch with purchasers and so much more.

Your feedback won’t always be rosy, of course. That’s to be expected. Negative feedback and unhappy customers are a source of wonderful data, though. They’ll tell you right away what isn’t working and what may be hurting your relationship with them. As long as you act on the feedback they give, you may be able to restore the bond between your brand and a displeased buyer.

How can you start implementing a customer feedback management program that will allow you to quickly identify customer-based problems and possibilities? Try putting a few steps in place to gather, parse and act upon different types of customer feedback.

Related: How to Really Hear and Use Customer Feedback

    1. Set up feedback mechanisms throughout the customer journey

If you don’t already have a systematic customer feedback process, you owe it to your team to pull one together. You can use a variety of vehicles to elicit feedback, from point-of-purchase polls to review requests. Remember that feedback can be organic, too, as in the case of social mentions on Facebook or X. Together, the feedback you receive needs to be funneled into your company so you can begin to evaluate it.

Your goal shouldn’t just be to take in data, though. You need to reflect upon it and react appropriately. Gartner points out that 80% of growth-focused businesses use their customer experience information proactively. Therefore, you can assume that by taking the appropriate steps to learn about what your customers want (and delivering on those desires), you’re positioning your organization to get bigger. And better.

Make sure you understand the actual problem and avoid simply gut-reacting to feedback. When a customer says they want a faster horse, take a step back and think about the real problem, which in this case is that they want to get from point A to point B faster. In one Alida survey, a whopping 75% of consumers said they didn’t think businesses used their feedback. Accordingly, be clear when you’re doing something in response to what your customers have told you. That way, they’ll realize that you’re not letting their input collect dust.

    2. Overlay quantitative data with qualitative data

Chances are strong that you’ll use an AI-fueled system to collect and analyze customer feedback data. AI can be highly useful in finding the most common patterns around specific products and services within your customer service feedback. It can deliver fast customer retention metrics, too. That said, you can’t solely rely on AI to tell you all the opportunities that lie ahead.

What’s the problem with allowing AI to guide your customer feedback reactions? It isn’t always able to “read between the lines.” Even predictive AI systems can’t tell you the “why?” That’s where qualitative data comes into play. Qualitative data teases out the nuances in quantitative data. It reveals the hidden “pain points” that might not be immediately apparent in the quantitative data. You can then use both types of data to plan out your strategy.

Not sure which kind of qualitative data mechanism would give you the most comprehensive understanding of customer experiences, preferences and perceptions across your brand, products and services? Statista shows that 44% of organizations opt for in-person focus groups. Online focus groups nabbed 39%, coming in second. Sometimes, just getting people talking can answer how to make customers more likely to return, refer and review your brand.

Related: This Is Why You Should Never Ignore Customer Feedback

    3. Aim for continuous improvement

Just a generation ago, businesses’ customer feedback channels were far more limited than they are today. From social media to branded apps, you now have expanded ways to gather data about your buyers. Your job, therefore, is to keep your eye on trends in the customer feedback ecosystem. Those trends will help you remain on the leading edge when it comes to amassing a wealth of feedback.

Case in point, personalization is a growing trend in the customer feedback world. As mentioned, McKinsey research has shown a desire across the buying population for personalized brand engagements. Today, software can allow customers to receive polls, surveys, etc., that are specifically designed around their purchasing journey. For example, Amazon leverages customer feedback to personalize recommendations and enhance the shopping experience by suggesting products that align closely with user preferences and past purchases.

If you’re not continuously improving with your customer feedback, you won’t be able to give the best possible customer experience. Take a look at how you’re collecting and using feedback currently. Are there gaps you could close, such as the lead time for feedback to be perused and contemplated by your team? Addressing those gaps can move your customer feedback system forward and put your company in a leadership position.

Consumers are savvier than ever and have plenty of choices. In Ford’s day, they were limited in their options, allowing him to avoid the need to collect feedback. Rather than take an antiquated approach to your customers, treat them as a gold mine for the information that will take your brand from zero to 100 in no time.

How Much Is Too Much Automation in the Workplace? How AI Could Be Hurting Your Employees | Entrepreneur

    [ad_1]

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is taking over the workplace, and employees are still not sure how their companies are using automation tools to boost their productivity or augment specific tasks of their jobs.

The reality, however, is that many companies have given their all or nothing for artificial intelligence without considering the near and long-term impact these tools will have on employees’ mental well-being. Now the results are in, and it’s not looking very good.

Several studies have found that employees are feeling more stressed or anxious since their companies have introduced several new AI-focused projects to assist with overall workplace productivity.

All of this for an extra boost in the quarterly bottom line.

Related: How to Leverage AI to Supercharge Your Business

How artificial intelligence is impacting employees’ well-being

What many thought would become the breakthrough moment of the century is now looking more and more taboo for some workers trying to avoid the topic of artificial intelligence in the workplace.

One recent study published by the American Psychological Association (APA found that roughly 4 in 10 (38%) American workers are worried that artificial intelligence will partially or completely take over their job duties, leaving them obsolete.

All of this tracking hasn’t fared well with employees either. In the same APA report, around a third (32%) of employees that know their boss is tracking their activity reported their mental health being “fair” or “poor.”

In a different APA study, more than half of employees said they are aware that their boss or manager is using some form of AI to monitor their activity while on the clock.

This isn’t to mention the countless number of employees feeling overwhelmed with all the new learning and training they have to undergo to effectively apply artificial intelligence in the workplace or their day-to-day activities. Fears of being replaced by machines, computers monitoring their activity and the absence of AI workplace policies are only adding more confusion to the office talk.

Yet, despite all of this chatter going around, a survey by The Conference Board found that 1 in 10 employers are now using generative AI tools daily. However, only 23% said that their company had an AI policy in development and 26% said their organization already had something in place.

    A fear of becoming obsolete

All over the world, employees are becoming more fearful of artificial intelligence taking their place in the office. In fact, a study by the Pew Research Center found that roughly 19% of U.S. workers were in jobs most exposed to the possibility of being automated by AI.

While it’s still unclear how many jobs might be slashed in the coming years, because it’s cheaper and more effective to employ machines, some suggest that artificial intelligence has already contributed to roughly 4,000 layoffs in May this year.

While employees fear that they might be replaced in the coming years, or even more worrisome, in a couple of months at the rate at which artificial technology is developing, many are also concerned over whether they will find a good paying job elsewhere.

Concerns regarding job fulfillment and work-life balance are all now being questioned as the workplace becomes increasingly automated and the labor market more competitive.

Related: Don’t Waste Money on AI. Unlock Its True Potential By Treating It Like a New Hire.

    Lack of privacy and security

It’s no secret that companies are leveraging artificial intelligence to track and monitor employee performance and their day-to-day activity while on the clock.

While some companies have used this technology to allow their teams to have more efficient and transparent workplace practices, allowing them increased exposure to project progress, and the ability to resolve inefficiencies more effectively — some employers have gone the other route, instead.

Those employees who know their bosses and managers are tracking their activity have felt that they are often being inappropriately watched; in fact, 81% of employees felt this way.

Employees are feeling that they are not being trusted by their employers or team members, leading to decreased morale and engagement. Additionally, this only adds to workers’ personal distress and leaves a sour taste in their mouths realizing that their activity is closely being captured by their employers.

On top of this lack of privacy, many employees often feel that a potential data breach could only further expose more of their personal information to bad actors. Weak cybersecurity infrastructure and a lack of proper security training are often known to be some of the biggest reasons for data breaches in the workplace.

A continuity of underlying workplace discrimination

Other issues with automation and artificial intelligence tools in the office are the potential risks these tools pose for workplace diversity and inclusion practices. Hiring algorithms used to train AI models are often responsible for the design choices made during a company’s hiring process and for selecting appropriate candidates for open positions.

However, many people feel that these algorithms used in the hiring and candidate selection process can influence a company’s wider diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) standards.

Already, there have been multiple examples of artificial intelligence being host to cultural and gender bias, only selecting employees based on their race, gender, and age and not necessarily taking into consideration their qualifications or experience.

Effectively training AI-hiring algorithms to de-bias itself and remove discriminatory actions takes time, often reversing the work employers have already done in recent years to create more equitable workplace policies.

What’s more, these systems are only learning from the data companies can feed them. Let’s say a company is predominantly male, the system will read that as “Hey, we don’t really hire women around here.”

Not even companies such as Amazon couldn’t de-bias its hiring algorithms back in 2018, despite having access to the necessary resources and skills.

Related: AI Is Coming For Your Jobs — Anyone Who Says Otherwise Is In Denial. Here’s How You Can Embrace AI to Avoid Being Left Behind.

Where do employers draw the line?

Well, that’s exactly the question many are wondering about. Companies will continue to invest in artificial intelligence, and employees will have to deal with what comes afterward. Finding a balance would require employers to take more actionable steps to effectively integrate AI within the workplace, allowing employees to grow alongside it, instead of being fearful thereof.

  • Why Vertical Integration Allows Leaders to Actually Control Their Data | Entrepreneur

Why Vertical Integration Allows Leaders to Actually Control Their Data | Entrepreneur

    [ad_1]

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

The parable of “The Blind Men and The Elephant” tells the story of six blind men who come across an elephant for the first time. They each examine a different part of the elephant. The trunk. The ears. The tusks… You get the gist.

Consequently, each person comes to a very different conclusion about what an elephant is.

They are all partly right — but also entirely wrong.

The moral of this story is simple. Different perspectives and incomplete information can lead to varying — and often inaccurate — interpretations. It’s an old story. But it’s a fable we should pay close attention to in our modern world. Especially when working with data.

Related: Using Data Analytics Will Transform Your Business. Here’s How.

Less will (almost) always be more

Business leaders worldwide want to use their data to make better decisions and get more accurate insights into their business.

But often, businesses will have multiple layers in their tech stacks. Some are new. Some are old. Some are integrated. Some are totally siloed. Each of these layers captures different data. And you get inaccurate insights when these pieces aren’t talking to each other.

Businesses have access to more data than ever before. But quantity doesn’t equal quality.

For many organizations, the actual quality of their data is being diluted. You create misaligned incentives by having so many different elements in your tech stack. One aspect of your stack may tell you one thing, but then the next part can contradict it. We see this a lot in advertising technology. A myriad of different buying platforms, data partners, publishers, analytics tools, CRM, segmentation tools and more. Often, it becomes so messy over time that it’s hard to get the actionable data you need to create insights, actions, and business impact.

Access to lots of data sets does not equal good data. Looking at data sets in silos is an easy way to paint the wrong picture, which increases the likelihood of poor decision-making.

Data is exciting, but you need to be able to view it in a single place, which is why I think the principles of vertical integration should be implemented here.

    Vertical thinking

Vertical integration is a strategy that allows a company to streamline its operations by taking direct ownership of processes. In other words, it allows you to control your own destiny. In theory, it gives businesses greater efficiencies, reduced costs, and more control of the manufacturing and distribution process. Tesla is a famous example of this model practice.

Tesla implemented vertical integration across its business structure — but with a major focus on two key aspects: battery production and energy storage. Tesla knew that batteries were critical to EVs – and that success hinged on owning a highly contested battery supply chain. This enterprise allowed Tesla to leverage its expertise in battery technology and apply it to the energy storage market, creating synergies and shared resources across different product lines.

It does everything from designing the cars, building the tech, and making its own chips to selling the cars. Everything is in-house, meaning supply chain issues or manufacturing partners don’t slow it down. This integration has helped the company scale its operations, drive technological advancements, and position itself as a sustainable transportation and energy solutions leader.

Owning your data can work in the same way. But without the need to build a multi-billion dollar gigafactory in Nevada.

By taking control of your tech stack and ownership of your information, you gain a more holistic view of what is happening with your business. And you also insulate yourself from issues in the outside world.

This is invaluable on its own. But this singular view becomes even more powerful when you factor in the exponential growth of AI and ML technologies. Applying these tools to a vertically integrated data set can transform a business and unlock previously unknowable insights.

Essentially if your data is disparate and not well integrated, you can never get to the “Unknown Unknowns”—the things you didn’t even know to ask about. There are patterns invisible to human eyes. You can only see these with good data.

More insights. More efficiency. More control. Vertical integration offers businesses control of their supply chains. But there are challenges, too. Even if you aren’t building huge factories, you need investment and support to make the necessary changes. And most importantly, you need to ensure that becoming self-reliant doesn’t mean you get tunnel vision and lose sight of developments outside your business.

Related: 8 Ways Data Analytics Can Revolutionize Your Business

    Data and elephants

If you look at different data sets in isolation, you will likely emerge with an incorrect idea of what an elephant — aka your business — really is.

You might be partly right in places, but you will also be entirely wrong.

Vertical integration allows leaders to see the full picture of their business — from customer to creative, hoof to tusk.

  • How to Leverage AI to Supercharge Your Business | Entrepreneur

How to Leverage AI to Supercharge Your Business | Entrepreneur

    [ad_1]

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

Artificial Intelligence: What was once a seemingly passing buzz phrase has now become an accepted and enduring technology reality — set to only increase in speed and application.

But, as a society, and especially among those focused on business solutions, there are divides on modes of response. Some feel nervous, even frightened, but certainly concerned about the impact AI could have on their jobs individually and the job market as a whole. Others straddle the fence, unconvinced as yet about its true potential. Then there is the corps of the savvy — those who harness its capabilities and recognize its limitations.

I heartily recommend you take your place in that last group.

I’m lucky to work in an ecosystem of individuals committed to harnessing innovation, one that embraces inventions and improvements and then learns how to redirect workflow energy accordingly. One such individual is Chris Winfield, founder of Understanding AI. His career path has flowed through various markets and verticals but has centered on giving entrepreneurs what he likes to term an “unfair advantage” by leveraging everything from relationships to PR and social media to mentorships. Now, he’s turned his attention to AI and has identified key ways entrepreneurs can gain another unfair advantage by leveraging it.

We sat down and discussed this pathway to more robust 21st-century business and various other related topics, including how to soothe associated anxiety.

Related: Elevate Your Personal Brand with AI

    You can’t avoid reality

According to Winfield, the most glaring mistake entrepreneurs make is avoiding the subject altogether. In a rapidly evolving business landscape, reluctance can leave you stranded while others sail smoothly into new opportunities. “The key,” he said, “is to understand that AI is a tool like any another: its effectiveness depends on how you wield it.”

    Early steps

To assess the applicability of AI in a work setting, Winfield typically has clients go through a simple exercise: Figure out what your hourly wage is (everyone has one: how much your company made last year divided by the hours you worked). Then, write down everything you do for one week — tasks, meetings, minutia, calls… everything. Once that list is complete, identify tasks you wouldn’t be doing if you could pay someone else to, then ask whether ChatGTP (or any other AI tool) could handle them.

Consider one example: Imagine how an entrepreneur who also manages writing and social media for her company might leverage AI during a typical day. She has a morning video call with an interviewer and applies vidyo.ai, an AI-assisted editing platform that transforms longer-form videos and podcasts into shorter clips suitable for TikTok, YouTube and Instagram. It also generates a snippet-ready video of the call and a transcript of everything discussed. She then engages ContentFries, which chops that video into social media-ready tidbits.

Finally, she makes productive use of the transcript using another AI tool to write blog posts and social media captions. She has done all of this — truly maximizing output and content creation — essentially without lifting a finger.

Related: 4 Ways This SEO Expert Uses AI to Create Content — and How You Can, Too

    The importance of smart input

To be sure, polishing and cleverly market-applying content is still up to you. One common pitfall, Winfield pointed out, is the assumption that AI can work wonders without you, but it can only be as good as the prompts you provide, which require creativity. He recalled mentoring a chiropractor who asked an AI tool to “write good newsletters.” That was it… that was the prompt. The results, not surprisingly, were lackluster. So, Winfield coached him, including imparting the effectiveness of “laddering.”

Generally applied in marketing realms, laddering also works with prompts. Think of it as peeling back an onion — moving from understanding features to values to the emotions that make us tick. We have to do this when using AI to help it understand our foundational and creative needs and the emotional payoff we’re looking for. Once it has all of those inputs, it can create useful and valuable content for consumers.

Enter ChatGPT, a tool developed by Open AI that can truly revolutionize our work. In addition to crafting and focusing prompts, you can use it as a brainstorming partner, a search engine and a versatile outline creator. Applied thoughtfully, it can save oceans of research time and busy work, leaving more hours for tasks only your creative brain can handle.

Another quick exercise: Have ChatGPT build a target market persona for your company, which could help you understand the current market better and/or identify one that a unique product or offering could reach. Be specific with your prompts, though: Ask it who may like your product, what competitors for it there might be, and lastly, have it present a demographic that you may not have thought about. Examine critically the resulting information, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes (or recognize AI’s mistakes) along the way.

    Keep AI work-related

As artificial intelligence continues to evolve, new tools are seemingly released daily, and it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement and lose focus. So, Winfield advises that entrepreneurs designate AI tools for work-related tasks only (avoiding using them for unrelated matters during office hours) to prevent time-wasting distractions.

The better you get at leveraging AI, the easier it will be to identify which tools you should and can integrate. Handled strategically and capably, you’ll find that productivity increases, creativity expands, and time is created for the kind of multidimensional thinking that really helps move the success needle.

I Tested AI Tools So You Don't Have To. Here's What Worked — and What Didn't. | Entrepreneur

    [ad_1]

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

In the fast-paced world of scaling service-based businesses, the dilemma of delivery versus marketing efforts is a constant challenge, especially for those who are at the point of maxing out on their client capacity.

The need for brand relevance, consistency and awareness can feel overwhelming when a lot of your time is dedicated to delivering a transformational experience for your clients. That sparked the idea for my team and me to dive in on testing relevant artificial intelligence tools to help free up time spent on our marketing strategies.

Here’s everything that worked — and what didn’t — in the last 12 months, using my coaching business as a guinea pig.

Related: Yes, You Can Use AI for Marketing. But Don’t Forget About the Benefit of Human Touch.

Does AI diminish the human touch or authenticity of our message?

One common fear is that AI will replace authenticity in marketing. A helpful reframe here may be to see this tool as an additional instrument in the “orchestration” of your brand.

Picture this: Just as a conductor directs the musical performance or symphony, AI can enhance your song without overshadowing your unique voice and the intention of what you want to convey in the song.

The song I’m referring to is your brand message. AI is just another instrument that can be added to your marketing to spread awareness for your brand. As long as you are clear on your ideal clients, offer and core message — then the playground is yours to integrate AI creatively into your marketing.

The biggest lesson I learned in the last 12 months is that the machine output will only be as good as the user’s input. You are still the storyteller, the architect and the soul of the intellectual message.

The 3 biggest benefits of AI

    1. The client-driven brand message

One key benefit is streamlining note-taking and not having to solely rely on our brains to do all the recalls, especially for client calls, events, workshops, etc.

Tools like Fathom on Zoom have allowed me to take detailed notes during calls without compromising my presence and focus as a coach. The ability to condense and generate information, summaries and insights at lightning speed is a game-changer.

From a marketing perspective, all the AI-streamlined notes can help enhance the clarity and specificity of our message because now we can use real-time data (a.k.a words sourced from our existing or potential clients) to create the most effective message to attract even more of our people. For streamlining call notes and summarizing data, consider trying Fathom AI or Otter AI.

Related: How to Incorporate AI into Your Marketing Strategies (and Why You Should)

    2. Making your content more dynamic and attention-grabbing

In today’s social media landscape, capturing the attention of our potential clients is more challenging than ever as you may be already aware. Now it is more crucial than ever to have compelling sales content, email headlines and hooks that stand out.

That’s exactly what I loved using AI for in my business. AI can work around the clock (unlike most of us who need eight to nine hours of sleep) to help you craft different versions of attention-grabbing copy that resonate with your audience.

Recently, I needed help writing the landing page copy for my new workshop event, so I went to ChatGPT. I provided the context of this event, what I was trying to teach, ideal clients that I wanted to reach and allowed AI to do the rest of the magic.

The entire process took less than 30 minutes from start to finish and resulted in a 40% conversion rate for sign-ups. This would have taken me at least two hours in the past.

This type of workflow works best if you are clear on the idea and just want support in putting the structure around it. Do always trust your intuition to decide on what feels right and edit as you go to ensure it still fits with your brand voice. Your intuition (human touch) is the starter and the finisher, AI can just speed up the process in between. For this use case, check out ChatGPT or Google Bard.

    3. Being everywhere at the same time (omnichannel efficiency)

As consumer’s content preferences evolve — from listening, watching or reading content, AI’s repurposing functionality offers endless possibilities for us business owners to streamline this process to reach more people on various platforms.

If you are someone who prefers to create content by “saying it out loud,” you can use a tool called Oasis AI to help you bring the audio into various formats of social content.

If you are someone who prefers to film content in a video setting, you can use a tool called Descript AI to help you add text-to-captions and cut into short-form videos to distribute to channels such as YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels or TikTok.

No longer do we need to spend countless hours editing or repurposing manually to be everywhere at once. All you need is one core content, and let the machine do the heavy lifting to help you generate 10x more out of that original piece.

Related: How to Use AI to Drive Growth and Improve Customer Interactions

The future of AI in marketing

A helpful reminder here is that artificial intelligence can not aggregate information that doesn’t exist online yet. We are still the creators and innovators.

Humans live, humans experience and humans connect — robots cannot do that. Humans will be the facilitators and the conductors of the machine. The question comes down to this: Are you willing to learn to become the best facilitator to help your business expand forward?

In the hands of someone curious, open-minded and creative, AI makes the marketing output significantly easier and faster. Welcome to the next era of marketing.

  • Why You Should Learn New Skill Sets This Winter | Entrepreneur

Why You Should Learn New Skill Sets This Winter | Entrepreneur

    [ad_1]

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

Here’s a harsh truth: unemployed people are having a hard time finding a new job because many companies halt their recruiting efforts during the last quarter of the year. This is not new – it is a well-known fact that big companies often do a headcount at the end of the year, and they often significantly slow down their hiring process.

Instead of unsuccessfully searching for opportunities when there is little to no hiring, many look to expand their arsenal of skill sets, which can propel their pursuit of better, bigger opportunities in the few months to come.

For those looking to embark on the journey of acquiring new skill sets during the slower pace that winter months often offer, I’d like to delve into five unique avenues to discover inspiration for skill sets that can benefit your life and career in the near future.

Related: Master New Skills From the Comfort of Your Home With This Bundle, Now Less Than $175

    Exploring LinkedIn job applications

One valuable resource for finding inspiration for new skill sets is right at your fingertips: LinkedIn job applications. Start by identifying professionals with positions similar to your current role, your desired career path, or roles with the title of the person you used to report to in your last job. Take a closer look at the job description for those roles, paying close attention to the skills and qualifications they require.

For example, if you’re in marketing and aspire to move into a leadership role, analyze profiles of Marketing Managers or Directors. Note the skills they require or those with that job title have honed over the years, such as data analysis, digital marketing or project management. These insights can guide your skill acquisition journey, helping you align your skill set with your career aspirations.

    Mentorship and networking

Seek out mentors who can offer guidance on skill acquisition. If you are still close or have a great relationship with the last person you reported to, you may seek them for advice, asking which skill sets would be valuable for you to acquire if you intend to continue to pursue growth in your current career path.

Conversations with mentors and industry peers can provide valuable insights into skill sets that have contributed to their success. These personal anecdotes and recommendations can steer you toward acquiring skills that align with your goals and aspirations.

If you’re not in touch with them anymore or would rather avoid contact with them, engage in mentorship and networking activities to discover skill sets that have proved valuable for others. Attend industry events, webinars, or virtual conferences where you can connect with experienced professionals who may have a similar career path to the one you’re pursuing.

In my experience, I found people I highly admire and invited them to step into a virtual group call once every other month. In our one-hour meetings, we discuss what’s been working for each of us and provide valuable guidance for everyone in the group. I like to call this exercise “Business Therapy,” in which we often discuss our past experiences and challenges and how we overcame them.

Learning from the experiences of others may end up saving you years of continuous hustle. Never rely solely on your experiences when you can learn from the experiences of others.

Related: Looking for a Mentor? The 7 Best Places to Start.

    Personal interests and hobbies

Sometimes, inspiration for new skill sets can emerge from your personal interests and hobbies. Consider activities you’re passionate about outside of your professional life. These interests can be a foundation for acquiring skills that bring joy and fulfillment.

For instance, if you’re an avid photographer, you may explore photo editing or digital marketing courses to promote your work effectively. Blending your passions with skill acquisition can lead to a well-rounded skill set that enhances your personal and professional life.

Fun fact: that’s how my journey in the technology industry began. I am an Architect by profession, but I am such a tech nerd that I always sought to acquire technical skills, which is how I came up with the business idea that ended up becoming Replay Listings, the company I’ve led for over seven years now.

Related: How to Turn Every Adversity You Face into an Advantage

    Tapping into industry trends

As industries evolve, new demands arise, creating opportunities for individuals to acquire relevant skills. For instance, if you’re in the technology sector, consider the rise of artificial intelligence and machine learning. These cutting-edge technologies are shaping various industries, from healthcare to finance.

By understanding industry trends, you can pinpoint relevant skill sets and future-proof your career. Stay updated with the latest industry trends and advancements. Explore industry-specific publications, blogs, or podcasts to gain insights into emerging skills in your field.

    Online learning platforms and courses

Online learning platforms offer various courses on various subjects, making skill acquisition more accessible than ever. Platforms like Coursera, Udemy, and LinkedIn Learning provide various courses, from technical skills to soft skills like leadership and communication.

Browse these platforms to discover courses that align with your career goals or personal development objectives. The flexibility of online learning allows you to acquire new skills at your own pace, making it a convenient option for the winter months.

The bottom line is the slow winter months often present a unique opportunity to embark on a skill-acquisition journey. Whether you draw inspiration from LinkedIn profiles, industry trends, mentors, personal interests, or online courses, acquiring new skill sets can enrich your life and open doors to exciting possibilities. Embrace the season as a time of growth and discovery, and you’ll emerge with valuable skills that can shape your future success.
