A community college bus carrying the school’s baseball team crashed and overturned in a ditch in rural Iowa on Wednesday, authorities said, killing one person and injuring all the other 32 occupants.
The 11 a.m. crash involved the Iowa Lakes Community College bus and no other vehicles, the Iowa State Patrol said in a statement. It occurred on a highway near Twin Lakes, about 110 miles northwest of Des Moines.
The name of the deceased victim was not immediately released. Iowa State Patrol Trooper Paul Gardner confirmed to CBS News that the other 32 occupants aboard the bus were hurt.
Three people were airlifted to trauma hospitals in Des Moines, said Bruce Musgrave, director of Calhoun County Emergency Medical Services, and others were taken by ambulance to four hospitals in the area.
KTIV-TV reported that the college’s baseball team was on board.
A man will receive millions of dollars after losing part of his leg due to a crash with a Metro Transit bus in Minneapolis more than two years ago.
Court documents accuse the driver of negligence, saying he “violated Metro Transit guidelines by departing from the designated bus stop when it was unsafe to do so.” The driver and the Metropolitan Council were named as defendants in the case.
The crash happened around 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 18, 2023, at East Lake Street and South Third Avenue. The victim’s attorneys say the man was trying to board a bus when the driver closed the doors and pulled away from the curb. He then tried to get the driver’s attention by tapping on the side of the bus, but he was knocked down, according to his legal team.
At the time, Metro Transit police said the victim was in stable condition at Hennepin County Medical Center, and an investigation was underway. However, attorneys say the man’s injuries ended up being so severe that his left leg was amputated below the knee. His injuries included multiple fractures to his leg, ankle and foot.
Although a jury initially awarded the victim more than $5.3 million, jurors decided he was also partially negligent in the crash and lowered his total by 20%. The victim will instead receive over $4.26 million, according to a judge’s order.
A spokesperson for Metro Transit says it is still reviewing the findings, and it generally doesn’t give public comment on ongoing legal proceedings.

The man accused of killing at least eight people in a bus crash on a Florida highway told investigators he smoked marijuana oil the night before and was in another accident three days earlier, according to an arrest report. Bryan Maclean Howard has been charged with eight counts of driving under the influence manslaughter after authorities say his pickup truck hit a bus and sent it off the road Tuesday morning.
According to an arrest report from the Florida Highway Patrol, Howard told an investigator he was hanging out with a friend who had a medical marijuana card Monday night and smoked marijuana oil with him. Before Howard went to bed, he said he also took some prescription medications.
On Tuesday, Howard left his parents’ house at around 6:30 a.m. to drive to a methadone clinic in Ocala, Florida, for treatment of a chipped vertebrae in his back, according to the arrest report.
Howard said he was driving carefully because he crashed his mother’s car into a tree three days earlier while trying to avoid an animal that ran in front of him, according to the report.
Howard’s eyes were bloodshot and watery during the interview with the highway patrol and his speech was thick and slurred, according to the report. After Howard was arrested Tuesday afternoon, a breath test found he had a blood alcohol level of 0.000%.
A judge ordered Howard held without bond during a virtual court appearance Wednesday morning. His next court appearance is scheduled for June.

Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro wrote on X, formerly Twitter, that the scene of the crash was “apocalyptic” and that he had already declared the “city’s mourning” for the “numerous victims” who were on the bus.
According to local media, the bus fell a few meters before crashing close to Mestre’s railway tracks, where it caught fire. Emergency crews were on the scene. The state police said they were on-site to aid victims and “to investigate.”
“The people in the bus found themselves surrounded by flames,” said Mauro Luongo, commander of the Venice firefighters team. “The scene we found was terrible. It took about one hour to extract some of the bodies.”
Four of the injured were in serious condition following the accident in the Mestre borough, Boraso said.

The City of Venice on social media confirmed that all the injured had been transported to a nearby hospital and that railway lines had been reactivated.
The Veneto region governor, Luca Zaia, told RAI state television that the cause of the accident was still unclear.
“This is an important tragedy, but it’s difficult to understand how it happened,” he said. “The bus was new and electric, and that street wasn’t particularly problematic.”
Premier Giorgia Meloni expressed her “deepest sorrow” after the crash. “Our thoughts go out to the victims and their family and friends,” she wrote on social media.

The school bus collided with a Honda at around 8:15 a.m. local time, officials said at a news conference. There were 53 people aboard the bus, including the driver.
In a news release, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said the bus was traveling westbound and was struck by a 2010 Honda Odyssey minivan that was traveling eastbound and “went left of center.” The bus “subsequently went off the right side of the roadway and overturned as a result of the crash.”
The Honda was driven by Hermanio Joseph, 35, and a passenger in the car was identified as Roberto Mompremier, 37, officials said. Both men were transported to Springfield Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
Dayton Children’s Hospital confirmed to CBS News they received 22 patients from the crash. Some were transferred by ambulance, while others were brought by their parents, the hospital said. In a news release, officials said 22 children were hospitalized, one with serious injuries.
The student who died was ejected from the bus and succumbed to fatal injuries at the scene, officials said.
The bus driver, identified as 68-year-old Alfred E. Collier, suffered minor injuries but was not taken to a hospital, officials said.
Northwestern Local Schools, a district with one elementary school and one middle/high school, said on Facebook there had been a “bus accident on one of (the) elementary routes.”

Dozens of people were injured in a crash involving a double-decker tour bus and a city bus in Manhattan Thursday evening, officials said.
There was a tangled mess of metal and glass when a Metropolitan Transportation Authority bus and a TopView Sightseeing double-decker bus collided just after 7:15 p.m. Eastern time in the Kips Bay neighborhood.
New York City Fire Department officials said 27 people were hospitalized, including the tour bus driver, and about 50 others were examined at the scene. Injuries included fractures, cuts and bruises, the fire department said. None of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening.
“We’re all quite fortunate it was not much worse,” FDNY Deputy Chief Paul Hopper said.
Crews had to use “ladders and ropes” to extricate some of the passengers from the buses, FDNY Deputy Chief Kevin Murphy added.
“The impact felt like it was almost an earthquake,” Ishrak Jahan, who was on the city bus, told CBS New York. “The whole bus was rattling and shaking. I heard the lady next to me scream, so I looked up and I saw this bus barreling towards us…I just saw glass everywhere for a second. It was honestly like I was in a movie. And it took a couple of seconds to snap back into reality when everyone started screaming. I saw blood.”
FNDY officials said they were unsure on the circumstances which led up to the collision. However, New York City Transit President Richard Davey blamed the crash on the tour bus.
“This tour bus behind us seemed to have blown a red light and T-boned our bus,” Davey told reporters. “Hit it actually twice, it was going so fast, we think.”
Pillan, who was on the tour bus with his family, told CBS New York that “a lot of people” were “thrown out of their seats. Injured, a lot of injuries. A lot of old people injured.”
Some passengers, like Paulina Rychel, were hit by a wave of glass.
“I heard the boom and then I felt it,” Rychel said.
Firefighters had a challenge taking people off the second deck of the tour bus and going through windows to take people out.
