  • Man accused of murdering girlfriend and roommate in Burien, WA

A 29-year-old man is accused of murdering his girlfriend and her friend in their home in Burien.

The suspect, Marvin Ortiz Montecinos, who investigators said also has a wife and children in Guatemala, is behind bars.

He is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, and his bail is set to $10 million dollars.

    What investigators said happened

According to probable cause documents FOX 13 Seattle obtained, Ortiz Montecinos killed his girlfriend an hour after she broke up with him.

Investigators said Ortiz Montecinos brutally stabbed Victoria Aparicio Cruz more than 20 times. According to the probable cause documents, Ortiz Montecinos then killed Yaneth Gomez Hernandez, her friend and roommate, because she tried to intervene.

Gomez Hernandez was the mother of a 10-year-old boy who lived in Guatemala.

According to investigators, the suspect and two victims lived in the same apartment in Burien.

    A reported bogus excuse

When police arrived, they found Ortiz Montecinos outside the apartment. The only thing he said was “my fiancé,” in Spanish, according to the report.

Oritz Montecinos tried to make it seem like he was also a victim, according to investigators. He was reportedly covered in cuts and blood, and told detectives he was asleep in the apartment when he heard his girlfriend scream. He then told investigators he was attacked by a man who was hiding in their house, according to the report.

However, investigators said the evidence did not add up. Text messages between Ortiz Montecinos and Aparicio Cruz show he was not home, according to the probable cause report.

Investigators also only found a single set of footprints connected to the crime, and evidence on a lock at the front door, they say disproves Ortiz Montecinos claims.

A double murder an hour after a break-up message

The incident happened about one hour after text messages show Aparicio Cruz broke up with Ortiz Montecinos, according to the report.

Investigators said they are concerned Ortiz Montecinos would flee the country if he was released. The report states Ortiz Montecinos has family in Guatemala, including a wife and children. The report also said Ortiz Montencinos had a sibling in Seattle when the murder happened, who is now back in Guatemala.

    Victim’s family asking for help

The family of Gomez Hernandez is looking to the community for help.

They have created a GoFundMe to raise money to ship her body back to Guatemala, where her child and her mother live.

    ICE involvement

ICE said they filed an immigration detainer with King County Jail for Ortiz Montecinos. A spokesperson with ICE said, “Ortiz is alleged to be one of the worst of the worst criminal aliens who pose a threat to the security of our communities.”

  • SWAT team arrests kitten killing suspect in Burien, WA, planned human next

Video from the King County TAC30 SWAT team body cameras show officers taking 30-year-old Devon Detweiler into custody at a Jack-in-the-Box drive-thru after Burien PD detectives say he admitted to torturing and killing four kittens and told a friend he wanted to kill a human next.

“Show me your hands, show me your hands,” can be heard in the body-camera footage as officers moved in on his vehicle.

The TAC30 team was deployed because deputies say there was a good possibility Detweiler would be armed after he made statements that if police came for him, he would be ready. Detectives say he posed a potential imminent danger to the public and was charged with three counts of first-degree animal cruelty and one count of felony harassment – domestic violence.

    The backstory:

Court documents show the arrest followed an investigation sparked after Detweiler’s father contacted Burien PD for help. He was too shaken to go to work after a friend of his son’s sent him Facebook messages and videos that allegedly showed Detweiler with two dead kittens and hearing him speak of wanting to kill a person.

Detweiler’s father called him about harming the cats and told detectives his son got angry and threatened to kill him. Detectives said Detweiler told his father he was “working up to killing a person” and planned to kill him first. He immediately accepted help from the department’s mental health professional to cope with what he’d seen and the fear he was about to be murdered.

In the messages, prosecutors say, Detweiler described repeatedly harming the kittens after adopting them. “So I did kill him the day I got him,” one message read, according to court documents. He referenced several cats by name — Percy, Moose, Lucky and Tabi — and told the friend he kept getting more cats “in hopes to take it all back but it keeps happening.”

Detectives said the messages included photographs, including one they say showed a kitten that appeared to have been mutilated. When officers executed a search warrant at Detweiler’s home, they documented holes in walls from the kittens being thrown against them, blood, cat toys and food, court records show.

Detectives also recovered an audio message of Detweiler saying, “Every f—ing day, bro. I can’t wait until I do a person, bro, I f—ing love it, bro! I love it bro, I can’t wait.”

Court documents recount Detweiler’s descriptions of the killings. He told investigators he had grabbed Moose after the kitten bit him, threw the animal against a wall and later threw it against a second wall, causing the kitten to die. He said he threw Lucky against a wall while holding him and later placed the animal in front of a fan, believing the kitten suffered a fatal heart attack. Detweiler told the friend he did not have a reason for throwing Tabi, saying the cat did not bite or scratch him. He referred to the cat as Tabi because he didn’t have it long enough to name it before killing it.

“They were all beautiful sweet boys and I betrayed them one by one. People are next. I feel like,” one message read, according to the charging papers. Prosecutors said Detweiler also wrote he planned to continue harming animals and even sought free pets through Craigslist to target next.

“Imma start doin puppies too. Tomorrow we gon see if we can get a free puppy, see if we can kill it,” he wrote.

During questioning after his arrest, Detweiler initially told detectives he would accept mental health treatment, the documents state. While in custody, corrections officers said he later told them he planned to “rip his father’s head off” for contacting police.

He was arraigned on Sept. 2 and remains jailed on $50,000 bail.

  • Time Tunnel Records in Burien is more than a business for customers

While streaming tunes is the go-to method for many music fans, there is a local record store in Burien creating a one-of-a-kind experience for its customers.

    Thirty years in the making

Matthew Alston opened Time Tunnel Records 11 years ago. He moved from Buffalo, NY to Seattle in the 90s with his band.

Thirty years later, he is still shredding on his guitar with his customers.

    Keeping the music alive

“He started to play for me, and I was like, ‘I also play,’ and one day I brought in my guitar, and we started to jam,” said Vincent Huynh.

Huynh is 19 years old. He tells FOX 13 Seattle, unlike most of his friends, buying records is his preferred way to listen to music.

    Time Tunnel Records

    Physical forever

“I didn’t get introduced to, like Spotify or Apple Music, because I really enjoyed having something physical,” he said.

Alston said when you purchase a record, tape, or CD it is yours forever. He said that is not always the case with streaming services due to licensing issues.

“You can stream music very easily, you can go to Target or Walmart and find new record, but if you want more out of your experience, Time Tunnel is an option for you to come and have more options available to you,” he said.

Alston’s collection at Time Tunnel spans decades of musical genres up until current artists. He sells cassettes, CDs, vinyls, as well as DVDs, Blu-rays, and even VHS tapes.

    More than a store

For Alston, the record store is more than a business and customers appreciate the space he has created.

“You really get a sense of what community feels like. Every time I come in, there is someone new. We get to chit-chat about music,” said Huynh.
