    [ad_1]

Vanowen and Fairview Car Crash with rescue

The Burbank Fire Department got dispatched to a Traffic Accident at 10:30 PM at Vanowen and Fairview last night. The dispatch notes included “Vehicle Into A Pole ‘Sideways’ “. When the first Engine arrived on the scene, the incident instantly changed from a standard accident involving a rescue with people trapped inside the automobile to a Technical Rescue.

The Engine Captain now became the Incident Commander till the Battalion Chief arrived on scene. He started requesting additional manpower, additional rescue equipment.

Burbank Police were requested, with 10 officers responding to close streets off to assist with crowd control and traffic investigation. Burbank Water and Power had a truck in the field, and they responded and determined that the snapped wires hanging from the pole were dead and carried no power. If your house lights flickered briefly or your computer reset, the electrical circuit automatically switched to another circuit in a flash.

At one point during the incident, a Burbank Water & Power Crew member was escorted by Burbank Police with Lights and Sirens blaring to the City Yards to get a truck that could hold up the broken pole to make the rescue complete.

While this was all going on, they discovered a young child had been thrown from the car, and Burbank Paramedics scooped them up and rushed off to St. Joseph’s Medical Center with a police escort. Minutes later, the same Paramedics transported the child to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles for proper care.

The male inside the car was extricated and transported to the Los Angeles County USC Trauma Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

The accidents remain under investigation by the Burbank Traffic Division. Anyone who witnessed the accident should contact them at 818-238- 3100. It appears that speed was a factor.

    • Ex-School Board Member Tabet Charged With a Felony by Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office

      [ad_1]

A former Burbank Unified School District Board of Education member has been charged following an investigation into the embezzlement of government funds.

On June 4, 2025, the Burbank Police Department was contacted by personnel from the Burbank Unified School District (BUSD) regarding possible embezzlement of public funds. District staff reported concerns about a contract awarded in September 2024 to Specialized Support Services, LLC, for up to $90,000 to complete a 2-year backlog of board meeting minutes.

From December 2024 to May 2025, BUSD paid $93,000 to the vendor; however, limited work had been completed.

The investigation revealed the company was registered under the name of a relative of Board Member Charlene Tabet, and evidence indicated Ms. Tabet signed documents and endorsed checks in her relative’s name, depositing the payments into her own bank account.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and filed one count of having a financial interest in a contract or purchase made in an official capacity, Government Code 1090(a), a felony. Tabet is due to appear in the Los Angeles Superior Court, Department 30, on October 30, 2025.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact Detective John Voorhis at (818) 238-3210.

      • Burbank Police Launch Community Connect to Enhance Communication

        [ad_1]

The Burbank Police Department is pleased to announce the launch of Community Connect, a new system designed to improve communication with residents, businesses, and visitors following a request for police services.

Community Connect uses automated text and email messaging to keep the community informed about the status of their calls for service.

When a caller provides contact information to the Burbank Police Communications Center, they will receive an acknowledgement message within minutes of their call being entered by an operator. If there is a delay in police response, Community Connect will automatically send updates until the call is dispatched.

Once an officer completes the call for service, the system will issue a follow-up message providing a general disposition of how the incident was managed. When a report is taken, victims may also receive the name of the responding officer and the corresponding report number. If a case is assigned to a detective, Community Connect will automatically notify the victim with updated information.

Messages are available in English, Spanish, and Armenian, and recipients may opt out at any time by replying “STOP.”

Following a call disposition, some callers may receive a short survey invitation to provide feedback on their experience. This information will assist the Burbank Police Department in improving services and ensuring accountability to the community.

To protect the safety of community members and officers, updates will not be sent during in-progress crimes or in sensitive situations where a message could create risk.

Community Connect reflects the Burbank Police Department’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and delivering quality service through communication with those we serve.

      • City of Burbank Adopts Ordinance to Clarify Parking Restrictions Near Intersections

        [ad_1]

On August 26, 2025, the Burbank City Council adopted an ordinance amending Title 6, Chapter 1 of the Burbank Municipal Code (BMC) to align with California’s new statewide “daylighting” law, Assembly Bill (AB) 413. The ordinance ensures consistency between the City’s existing parking standards and the new state law, which took effect on January 1, 2025.

AB 413 prohibits parking within 20 feet of the approach to a crosswalk, and within 15 feet where curb extensions are present. In other words, parking is prohibited in the area directly in front of the crosswalk as a driver is driving toward it. The new law is designed to improve safety by increasing visibility at intersections and reducing potential conflicts between drivers and pedestrians.

Burbank’s own daylighting ordinance has been in place since 1979. Under the BMC, parking is prohibited within 15 feet of intersection corners, within 25 feet of stop signs and traffic signals, and in any location deemed hazardous by the City when marked with red curb. These local restrictions remain unchanged. However, many smaller residential intersections and other locations do not have red curb markings. At these locations, the new state law now applies.

Two rules now guide drivers when parking near intersections:

        1. Parking at red curb zones remains prohibited as stated in the current BMC.
        1. Even without a red curb, parking is prohibited within 20 feet of the approach to a crosswalk under AB 413. This restriction applies whether or not the crosswalk is painted, as state law considers any corner with a curb ramp or stop sign to be a crosswalk.

For AB 413 violations, the City’s initial focus will be on education and warnings to help drivers adjust to the new law. Parking Enforcement will continue to cite vehicles parked in red curb zones.

To support this effort, the City will launch an outreach campaign that includes a dedicated webpage, social media posts, informational videos, and community engagement through the Burbank Police Department.
