  • What Does ‘APT’ Mean? How Rosé Convinced Bruno Mars to Help Write an ‘Unserious’ Song About a Korean Drinking Game

    [ad_1]

Just meet me at the… We can’t get Rosé and Bruno Mars‘s song “APT” out of our heads. With it’s catchy hook and clever writing, the song has reached every corner on the earth and for good reason.

The song, released October 24, 2024, instantly climbed the charts with 2 billion streams on Spotify, and spending 45 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 3. Now it’s up for three nominations at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year.

    What does APT mean?

APT has two meanings in this song: a literal apartment and the classic Korean drinking game (아파트 or Apateu). The drinking game involves a group of three or more people and after everyone shouts apateu four times, a player calls out a number. The players then stack hands on top of each other in random order (think like an apartment building) and they start counting as the person’s hands on the bottom moves to the top. The person whose hand lands on top of the stack last when the number that was chosen is reached, has to take a shot. If you need a visual, Rosé’s got you covered.

Rosé revealed how the song was conceptualized to CBS Mornings. “I was in the studio and here’s me just teaching everyone my culture. “This is what brings us fun in Korea.” Korea has a really lively culture where people love to get together and share a drink. We talk, we cry, and we share games. Their eyes were like, ‘What is this chant?’ It was bringing us together.”

The BLACKPINK member also explained to Vogue that she wasn’t convinced about the song until every person on her team said that they were “obsessed.” “I remember going home kind of freaked out. I was like, ‘Is this OK that I’ve written a song about a drinking game? Is this too unserious?’ And so I got all of the producers and songwriters to delete the song off of their phones.”

Rosé and Bruno Mars immediately clicked over the song over the fun premise. “I was like, ‘It’s about drinking? You got me,’ ” Mars told Billboard. “But truthfully, it was Rosie’s voice, it was her saying this hook that just had this magic to it. And after talking to her it became, ‘Let’s build on this, let’s figure this puzzle out.’ That’s what all these songs are, right? And I thought it was beautiful that it was from her culture; she didn’t just send me a pop song talking about love or whatever. She really put me on game.”

We’re as syoer obssessed with the song, so take a look at the lyrics below

  • 4 Atlantic Records Artists We’d Love To Hear ROSÉ Collab With

4 Atlantic Records Artists We’d Love To Hear ROSÉ Collab With

    [ad_1]

We’re beyond ecstatic to see what the next chapter holds for BLACKPINK, and we’ll get to see what it holds for ROSÉ very soon! She just signed a global deal with the iconic Atlantic Records with THEBLACKLABEL handling management. Does this mean we’ll be getting new music shortly…? We have all of our fingers crossed!

Rosé also recently announced her fandom name, Number Ones (what a coincidence, supporting her is one of our number one priorities), and her @vampirehollie Finsta page to share more exclusive content with fans. So much is coming and we can’t wait to learn more! While we wait, let’s celebrate her Atlantic Records signing by imagining the perfect collabs with her new labelmates.

    Bruno Mars

Much like Bruno Mars, we feel that Rosé has a timeless voice that could fit all sorts of retro vibes. Whether it’s a ballad like his Lady Gaga-assisted ‘Die With A Smile’ or an upbeat song like ‘Locked Out Of Heaven,’ we know they’d make a great pair! Their voices would be such a beautiful complement to each other and we’ll be dreaming of hearing them together until it happens.

    Cardi B

Okay, we know we’ve technically gotten a Rosé x Cardi link-up because of BLACKPINK’s ‘Bet You Wanna,’ but let us dream a bit! We’d love to hear Rosie and Cardi team up again, especially if Rosé is going with a different sound for her solo work than we usually hear from her. The possibilities would be endless with these two talented ladies! We think a song about finding who you are and staying true to your most confident self would be fantastic, especially now that we’ll be meeting new sides of Rosé as a soloist.

    Coldplay

Consider this our official petition to get one of Rosé’s ‘Viva La Vida’ covers out on streaming services. Or better yet, give us an official remix adding her vocals to Coldplay’s classic. Orrr give us a new song that has Rosie trading lines with Chris Martin. We’re not picky, we just want to hear them sing together! They can each move audiences so easily with their music, so a collab between them would change the world.

    Kelly Clarkson

Much like Rosé, part of why we love Kelly Clarkson so much is because she’s a master at capturing emotion with her voice! A collab between these two would easily become one of our all-time favorite songs. We’d imagine it as a passionate, lower-tempo track like ‘GONE,’ which would let them show off their vocal and storytelling talents so well. And then we could get a Rosé appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show to see them sing it together!

Which of these collabs would you be most excited to hear? Do you have any predictions for Rosé’s upcoming music with Atlantic Records? Let us know in the comments below or hit us up on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter!

  • Sam Tompkins Is The Next Big Thing

Sam Tompkins Is The Next Big Thing

    [ad_1]

These days, the inception of many careers starts on social media. At first, there was YouTube, now there’s TikTok. This video-based social media platform is where Sam Tompkins began posting clips of himself singing covers of popular songs. While many aren’t successful, Sam Tompkins had a different story to tell.

His story truly starts with his cover of Bruno Mars’ “Talking To The Moon,” which sent viewers into a frenzy over Tompkins’ captivating voice. From there, he collaborated with JNR CHOI to create a viral remix of the song…which would become the soundtrack for
millions of TikTok’s by users everywhere.

He’s a mega-viral singer who has already proven that he’s not letting this moment end. Sure, there’s always the question of “what’s next,” but Tompkins seems to have the formula figured out. His vocal ability has gotten him here for a reason, and fans quickly recognized that his relatable lyrics and hard-hitting choruses are replay-worthy.

But it’s not just the fans who love Tompkins…who has received recognition from superstars like Elton John, Bebe Rexha, and Justin Bieber. There’s something special woven into his silky smooth vocals that makes Sam Tompkins an obvious choice for the next star in the music industry.

    His debut album,
hi, my name is insecure, which was released on July 26, is a step inside Tompkins’ soul. While many artists play it safe during the first submissions, it’s clear that Sam had a different approach…and we’re lucky he did.

The album itself is stunning: an aesthetically pleasing, sonically dynamic masterpiece that showcases his depth as an artist. A ballad-heavy, introspective piece of work with tracks like “lose it all”, which was another hit among listeners and fans. Each song is riddled with emotion and ladened with instrumental backing that just contributes to the well-rounded tracks.

You can listen to hi, my name is insecure here:

He’s one of the most exciting artists out there, and he deserves all the success he’s receiving…and while he may make it look easy, we know it certainly is not.

We spoke with Sam Tompkins about his debut album, touring with The Kid LAROI, and much more! Check it out below:

Congratulations on your debut album, hi, my name is insecure! As your first official album, what was it like to create a full body of work?
Creating an album is difficult in hindsight as I’m sure you can imagine, but actually (at least for me), it felt really natural. I loved the writing process and recording and figuring it all out step by step. it was chaos and it was tricky at times, but it just felt right.

What is the main message behind your album? How does it represent you as an artist?

I guess the main message would be a problem shared is a problem halved. that’s kinda my mantra as a person and artist to be honest. Be vulnerable and you will find the challenges you’re faced with don’t feel as scary. Saying “hi my name is insecure” straight off the bat as the title for my introduction to the world as an artist just felt like the right thing to do. I am insecure and i will not be ashamed of that anymore. it’s natural… we all feel it.

While the album title is a bit self-explanatory, what does it mean to you? How did it feel right when making the single and the album?

    I always compare it to
8 Mile. That rap battle at the end where Eminem’s character basically just insults himself for the first verse using all of the negative things he knew his opponent was gonna use against him basically rendering the other guy useless. When i say i’m insecure and own that, i am essentially taking control and power over the situation.

You just went on tour with The Kid LAROI…what was your favorite part about touring live? Will we see a solo Sam Tompkins tour soon?

It was amazing. Honestly, my favourite part was seeing one of my favourite artists doing his thing in the flesh. Yes! I am supporting Myles Smith across America in September and then doing my own tour in Europe and the uk in November!

Your “Talking To The Moon” cover went viral on TikTok. Can you tell us a little about that experience?

Honestly, it was just such a whirlwind. I was just bored one night and decided to make the video and it just changed my life in so many ways. Kinda crazy to experience that level of vitality, but it’s something I’m super proud of.

What are three words you’d use to describe this album?

    “Honest”, “Raw”, “Rollercoaster”

  • Not Exactly Dying Over Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars’ “Die With A Smile”

Not Exactly Dying Over Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars’ “Die With A Smile”

    [ad_1]

In keeping with the motif of the world’s inevitable apocalypse (at the rate things are going), Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars have seen fit to release a song befitting of such a foregone conclusion. Called “Die With A Smile,” the track is a mawkish love song that finds each singer professing that, “If the world was ending/I’d wanna be next to you” (too bad the single wasn’t out when Lorene Scafaria’s Seeking a Friend for the End of the World was released in 2012—you know, the year the world really ended). It would be sweet if it wasn’t so utterly depressing. Not just because it seems to take the world “ending” for people to fully understand what they mean to one another, but because, more and more, people seem to be surrendering to the world’s end (for humans, anyway) rather than doing anything that might combat it (like, say, ceasing to support businesses such as Shein).

Nor does anyone appear to want to combat the “trend” of country taking hold of 2024. For, in what marks yet another instance of the music industry “going country” (as Lana Del Rey decreed earlier this year), the accompanying video, co-directed by Daniel Ramos and Bruno Mars, finds the duo attired in Western wear. While the song itself isn’t exactly country apart from its Patsy Cline-esque sentiments, the aesthetic borrows heavily from the genre, right down to stylizing the video as a “performance” on a 1960s-looking variety show. Sort of like what Lily Allen already did in 2009’s “Not Fair” video (granted, “Not Fair” had a much twangier musical sound to warrant having a country theme for its visual).

Here, too, Gaga and Mars sing as though before a live studio audience (though there’s no audience to be seen), with Mars opening the track by painting the picture, “I, I just woke up from a dream/Where you and I had to say goodbye/And I don’t know what it all means/But since I survived, I realized/Wherever you go, that’s where I’ll follow.” That last line, of course, is a familiar one, said (in some variation or another) in everything from Peggy March’s “I Will Follow Him” to The Calling’s “Wherever You Will Go.”

As for whether or not this is “Bruno Mars’” song or “Lady Gaga’s” song (with both rumored to have new albums coming out imminently) depends on who the listener is a fan of. On the one hand, Lady Gaga gets top billing with her name put before Mars’, but, on the other, Mars sings the majority of the verses. Not only that, but he’s standing front and center with the microphone in the video, while Gaga sits off to the side on her piano, looking like Natasha Lyonne (complete with a stoic expression) with a cigarette protruding from her mouth.

To boot (no cowboy pun intended), Gaga never gets to sing any of the verses without Mars. In some ways, though, it actually does feel more like a Gaga endeavor, not just tone-wise and in terms of Gaga constantly flip-flopping her musical styles with each new “era,” but also based on the single’s release date. For it’s on-brand that Lady G would choose to sanction a new song being put out on Madonna’s birthday, August 16th—though that might not necessarily be a good omen for her (especially as it’s Madonna’s “Satan year”). It’s almost as dick swinging as Britney Spears sporting an updated version of her Versace butterfly dress after Blake Lively wore the original version to the It Ends With Us movie premiere.

In any case, Gaga only deigns to get up from her piano during the guitar breakdown of the song toward the three-minute mark, swaying to and fro as she parades the full extent of her very obvious wig styled into a beehive—and yes, the overall effect, cigarette and all, makes one remember why Gaga chose to dye her hair blonde in the early days of her career: so as to avoid comparisons to Amy Winehouse.

Indeed, apart from still harboring makeup-inspired traces of Harley Quinn (being fresh off her Joker: Folie à Deux stint), Gaga majorly channels Winehouse’s (not Dolly Parton’s) look in this video (perhaps the next time another biopic is made, she can be the one to occupy the lead role—for it couldn’t be any worse than Back to Black). Unfortunately, the channeling only comes from a visual standpoint. For, although the song is all about yearning and burning for a loved one (but only in the event of an apocalyptic situation, mind you), it doesn’t convey even one iota of the same emotions expressed in any Winehouse song.

In fact, Winehouse was unapologetic about genuinely wearing her heart on her sleeve when it came to the lyrics she wrote, famously stating, “So much music nowadays is so like, ‘You don’t know me, I don’t need you’ and all the music then [in the 60s] was kinda like, ‘I don’t care if you don’t love me. I will lie down in the road, pull my heart out and show it to you.’ You know what I mean?” Clearly, many musicians of the moment do not. This extends not just to Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga, but also the often ersatz emotionalism of, say, Taylor Swift. Then there is the penchant for outright froth from the likes of Miley Cyrus, Sabrina Carpenter and, oy vey, Katy Perry (currently trying to stage a very catastrophic “comeback”). Things on the rap/hip hop front aren’t much better of late either, with both Megan Thee Stallion and Ice Spice continuing to promote “money is the anthem” messages with the highest degree of grotesqueness.

In effect, when a musician does say something that at least sounds meaningful in a song, it’s very easy for listeners to be taken in by it. To practically swoon over it. Which is precisely what seems to be happening with “Die With A Smile.” Especially with the maudlin chorus, “If the world was ending/I’d wanna be next to you/If the party was over/And our time on Earth was through/I’d wanna hold you just for a while/And die with a smile/If the world was ending/I’d wanna be next to you.” While it might come across as romantic to some, to others, it simply reads like it would take a cataclysm to treat someone with the sort of effusive romanticness they deserve every day. Not just with the threat of imminent death. So no, not exactly “dying” over “Die With A Smile.”

  • Your Weekend Playlist: New Music To Listen To This Friday

Your Weekend Playlist: New Music To Listen To This Friday

    [ad_1]

And we’re back with another Weekend Playlist! Sometimes I wonder if I’ll ever grow tired of making cute little playlists for everyone to enjoy, but truly it never gets old. Especially when each week there’s new music released by artists everywhere.

Instead of searching through countless Spotify and Apple Music New Music Friday playlists and checking social media for the hottest new tracks, I collect the best of the best to make it easy on you. Yes, I do all the hard work and you just sit back and enjoy.

As we soak up the last few weeks of sunshine and Summer Fridays, there’s nothing you need more than new music to get you through. And, as promised, we have a whole playlist’s worth of new music released today, August 16.

So, if you’re ready for the weekend already like I am…here’s a new playlist filled with new music! As always, let’s get listening.

    Hozier- “Nobody’s Soldier”

There isn’t much to say about Hozier’s angelic vocals that hasn’t been said already. He’s lyrically complex, weaving tales and transcendentalism into his music with every new single. Now, he’s here with a trilogy of singles and each is more delicious than the next. My personal favorite, however, is “Nobody’s Soldier.”

Almost gospel, Hozier builds this dynamic track into a crescendo of vocals, heightening beats, and an orchestral backing that makes this perfect. It’s equal parts stomp-and-holler and indie folk, everything you love about Hozier…but refined, mature, and a little bit rock ‘n’ roll.

Tiesto, AFROJACK, MC Ambush- “Light It Up”

We needed a huge EDM song for the playlist this week, and a few major names in house music stepped up for us. “Light It Up” is high energy from the very start, perfect for your pregames or when you need to get amped up. Seriously, this song is made for the club.

Tiesto and AFROJACK are two of the biggest DJ’s out there right now, which is why this collaboration is all the more exciting. They know what they’re doing, and it shows with this track.

Duke Dumont, Clemintine Douglas- “Ain’t Giving Up”

High energy and house driven, Duke Dumont has always made bangers. However, by adding Clemintine Douglas’ strong, electrifying vocals makes this track all the better. It’s great for clubs or intense workouts, getting your heart pumping as Douglas reiterates that she isn’t giving up on her lover.

Duke Dumont is a titan in the electronic dance industry for a reason, and they’ve remained relevant by creating refreshing, yet consistent music. “Ain’t Giving Up” reminds us the summer isn’t truly over, and we can’t get enough of this track already.

    Post Malone, Jelly Roll- “Losers”

And so the summer of country music continues with Post Malone’s F-1 Trillion album out today. He’s got collabs with major country hitters on this album like Chris Stapleton, Luke Combs, and more. But specifically, we’re here to talk about “Losers” featuring Jelly Roll.

A feel good song, “Losers” blends the voices of the two and melds them into one silky song. It’s reminiscent of slow summer days spent with friends and family, and the perfect addition to this playlist.

Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars- “Die With A Smile”

They’re baaaaaack. Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars are household names when it comes to music, we’ve basically grown up listening to them. Any song they have is guaranteed to be a hit, so when they come together…it’s magic. “Die With A Smile” is a sign of the times for the duo…both a culmination of their vocal power and ability to write a hit track no matter what.

Expect this one to be a radio favorite, as both musicians are giving us all they have. It’s a mellow, yet hard-hitting ballad that brings out the best in both of them. It’s ethereal the way they can work with each other’s voices so well, but that’s what you get when you’ve conquered your respective sides of the industry.

    Elle Darlington- “summer crush”

Fun-loving, an easy listen, bubblegum bedroom pop. That’s what Elle Darlington delivers with “summer crush”- it’s a catchy song about a summer fling…and every time I hear an Elle Darlington song, I’m reminded we’re in good hands when it comes to pop music. Darlington is like a breath of fresh air, and “summer crush” is reminiscent of a young Ariana Grande.

You’ll find yourself easily dancing along to “summer crush”, singing “I don’t wanna be alone” over and over with her. Again, summer isn’t over until we say it is. This song was made for the sunshine and good vibes.

Foster the People- “Paradise State of Mind”

In their first album in three years, Foster the People hasn’t missed a beat (literally.) “Paradise State of Mind” leans heavy on the synthy, indie sound that we know and love, while transporting us throughout a groovy, well-produced track. It’s one of my favorites on the album for a reason.

The eponymous track is a statement: they’re back and they’re better than ever. It’s a mixture of 70’s sounds with extremely modern twists. A thrilling listen til the very end.

  • Alan Walker and Kylie Cantrall Talk Their New Single, “Unsure”

Alan Walker and Kylie Cantrall Talk Their New Single, “Unsure”

    [ad_1]

Alan Walker has the It Factor when it comes to producing high-quality EDM tracks. At only age 18, he began trailblazing a path to become one of the most iconic DJ’s of all time by releasing his hit song, “Faded.” Now nine years later, Alan Walker has created a dynasty for himself.

He’s amassed over 80 billion streams over his audio and visual releases, he’s collaborated with major artists like Sia, Noah Cyrus, Coldplay, and Bruno Mars. Walker is no stranger to success- every song of his has the Midas touch and turns to gold. He inspires the sound of budding DJ’s and seasoned veterans alike…and now he’s back with another hit collab, “Unsure.”

“Unsure” is a leading contender for song of the summer for a few reasons: it combines Walker’s classic production skills and heavy bass with the strong, whimsical vocals of none other than Disney’s Kylie Cantrall. Perhaps an unlikely pairing to some, we can thank TikTok for bringing Alan and Kylie together.

Kylie Cantrall is a star in her own right. Described as the epitome of a triple-threat, she has her music career going strong with songs like “Boo’d Up” and stars on the Disney+ show, Descendants: Rise of the Red.

The song itself was created by Walker as he played around with different sounds and invited vocalists on the app to hop on the track. When Kylie Cantrall dueted Alan Walker’s “Unsure” remix, he knew this was going to be an instantaneous hit.

With an already impressive discography, “Unsure” feels unlike anything we’ve ever heard from Walker. This song feels a little bit more like the “Faded” style we all fell in love with…but Kylie Cantrall adds just enough flare to get everyone dancing. You can listen to “Unsure” here:

This week, we have an exciting double feature interview with Alan and Kylie, who talk about their experience making the track together, how it all came to be, and more. Check it out below!

    The Alan Walker Interview

AW: Congratulations on “Unsure!” How did you decide to team up with Kylie Cantrallon this song?
Thank you! It’s actually a fun story, it happened on TikTok! Over the last few weeks, I’ve been playing around with remixing various sounds from TikTok when I came across a video that became the basis for the song now called “Unsure.” When I posted the instrumental to find someone to do the vocals, Kylie jumped on it! She has an absolutely fantastic voice, so the choice was easy! PD: You debuted the single at your LIV Las Vegas show…What’s going through your mind when you play a song for the first time in a crowd?
AW: It’s always a bit scary to play a song for the first time, especially when no one has heard it before! But it went well, and fortunately, there was a great vibe!

PD: The music video takes place in Walkerworld. What was it like creating an immersive theme park on Fortnite?
AW: Haha, it was a journey! I really love gaming, so when we decided to go all in on creating our own map, it was a dream come true. At the same time, we learned a lotfrom the first release, and I’m looking forward to the next!

PD: You’ve had prolific career so far with hit songs like “Faded” and “Alone”…howwould you say your style has evolved over the years?
AW: My musical style has evolved through everything from experiences to sources of inspiration and collaborators. I enjoy jumping between genres and am not afraid to try new things. Actually, Unsure is more like the original “AW” style & so I’m eager to see the response!

PD: How does your production process differ from when you remix popular artists’ songs like Coldplay and Bruno Mars versus an original song like “Unsure?”
AW: All songs have different processes, so it’ s not necessarily about remixes or original tracks. But one thing that is naturally very different is that I work closely with a vocalist, and in this case, Kylie. It’s incredible to be in the process where we find thevocalist – and everything just suddenly clicks!
PD: What sort of songs do you like to remix?
    AW: Songs with great melodies!
PD: With three singles under your belt this year, can fans expect a new album on the horizon?
    AW: Yees!

    The Kylie Cantrall Interview

PD: Kylie, how can you describe this collaboration from your perspective?

KC: I think there’s nothing cooler than being able to use social media as a tool to connectand collaborate with people from all over the world, and that’s especially true in thisscenario. If it wasn’t for TikTok, I wouldn’t have stumbled upon Alan’s “Unsure” remix that I duetted which ultimately led to us releasing the song together. It happened quite out of the blue, but I’m so incredibly grateful that Alan gave me this opportunity. A duo we never knew we needed!
PD: You’ve made a return to music recently after a short break from releasing, what inspired this return?

KC: I’m always writing and recording music, but I know I can’t release anything new if I’min the middle of an acting project because I won’t have the time to focus my energy oncreating content that helps the promotion. So, that’s been the juggling act lately butI’m happy I have an open window right now that I can focus on putting new music out into the world.
PD: Tell us more about the process of creating ‘Boo’d Up’?

KC: Well, “Boo’d Up” is a cover song that I’ve loved for years. So, when my label said, “We really feel strongly about you adding a cover song to your upcoming album”, I immediately ran to the studio and began creating my own version of the record, and “Boo’d Up” became my latest single!
PD: If you could work with any other artist on your next collaboration, who would it be and why?

KC: I’d love to collaborate with Rema! My dad and I play the Rave & Roses album almost every time we’re in the car. He’s a melodic genius and seriously has one of the most incredible voices ever.
PD: You’re also an actress, do you find there’s any similarities in the process of doing both things?

KC: I really love the performance aspect of both acting and singing. I feel my most confident when I’m performing, whether I’m playing a character like the daughter of the Queen of Hearts or performing my own song in a music video, it’s so fun getting to tap into the bigger than life version of myself!

Bruno Mars Reportedly In $50 Million Of Debt With MGM Casino After Assuming Cocktails Were Complimentary

    [ad_1]

LAS VEGAS—Now in the eighth year of his long-term residency at the resort, pop star Bruno Mars reportedly owes the Park MGM $50 million after having assumed since 2016 that the casino cocktails were complimentary. “They’re supposed to be free, right—at least while you’re gambling?” asked the “Uptown Funk” singer, claiming that bar staff across the Las Vegas hotel’s casino, restaurants, and poolside bars never mentioned a tab when offering him another round of drinks, nor did they ever ask for his room number. “I don’t even remember putting a credit card down. They always just said, ‘Very well, Mr. Mars,’ and brought another tray of drinks over. What a scam! If I’d known they were charging me, I would have stuck to the cheap stuff. I’m definitely going to need them to show me an itemized bill for everything before I check out.” Mars later confirmed that where the Park MGM really got him was with the mini bar’s $12 bags of macadamia nuts, which he had been eating continuously for almost a decade.

  • Bruno Mars Cancels Israel Show Amid Hamas Attack

Bruno Mars Cancels Israel Show Amid Hamas Attack

    [ad_1]

Bruno Mars‘s sold-out concert in Tel Aviv on Saturday has been canceled, its promoters announced via Instagram, after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that the country is at war. The news follows a surprise attack by the Palestinian militant group Hamas, launching thousands of rockets and entering Israel by land, sea and air using paragliders, according to CNN.

The show, planned for 100,000-seat HaYarkon Park, was Mars’s second in the venue, after a Wednesday show described by the Jerusalem Post as “dazzling.” That appearance was his first-ever show in Israel, the Post noted last month. By selling out two shows in the stadium, he became “one of the most  – if not the most – successful artists to ever appear in Israel,” as other acts such as “Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, and U2” only managed to sell out “one show, not two.”

“The Hooligans made it to Israel,” Mars reportedly announced from the stage at the Oct. 4 show, a reference to his backing band.

Mars and the Hooligans were expected to return to the HaYarkon stage Saturday night, for a show added after tickets for Wednesday’s show swiftly sold out. That plan changed, however, when in a surprise early-morning attack Saturday, Hamas militants sent soldiers and missiles into Israeli towns near the Gaza Strip. As of publication time, 100 have been killed in the incursion, the Associated Press reports, a number that’s expected to rise but already makes Saturday “one of the deadliest days in Israel’s 75-year history.”

“We are at war,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a televised address to the nation on Saturday. “Not an ‘operation,’ not a ‘round,’ but at war.”

It’s unclear if Mars is currently in Israel. Concert promoter Live Nation had previously announced that ”the artist and his managers are being kept informed on the unfolding situation and waiting for instructions,” the Times of Israel reports. But as the fighting continued, Live Nation announced via Instagram that the show had been canceled.

“All ticket purchases to the show will receive an automatic refund to the credit card through which the purchase was made,” the promoters announced in a post written in Hebrew and automatically translated by Meta. “We stand with the residents of Israel, IDF fighters, and the security forces in these difficult moments.”

As of publication time, Mars has not publicly addressed the cancelation. His most recent post, from two days ago, shows him addressing the crowd from the HaYarkon stage.

In a crowded field of young pop artists, Zach Hood stands out.

In just a couple of years, the Alabama native has built an entire world of pastel aesthetics, illustrated cover art, and songs perfect for a late night at home. It’s not an attempt to jump on the sadboi trend. It feels genuine, and fans have followed. “Isabelle” is his most popular track, but several of his songs have more than two million streams. A catchy hook can land an artist a hit. It takes purpose to build an entire catalog.

It may be no coincidence that Hood’s career took off following the pandemic. His lyrics address isolation and the need for human connection. But he extends beyond cozy bedroom beats. His EP BLOSSOM opens with “i ain’t rich, girl,” a guitar-driven reimagining of Hall and Oates’ “Rich Girl.” Starting with hand claps, “when she was mine” ditches the pop sound for sing-along back porch folk.
