Jury reaches verdict in Jam Master Jay murder trial in New York

    [ad_1]

BROOKLYN, New York — The jury has reached a verdict in the New York murder trial of Run-DMC star Jam Master Jay.

The decision will be read at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Evidence versus eyewitnesses: that’s what it all boiled down to for deliberating jurors in the murder trial. It started five weeks ago in federal court in Downtown Brooklyn.

Karl Jordan Jr. and Ronald Washington were indicted for committing murder as a result of a drug conspiracy.

Prosecutors accuse the two long-time friends of the hip-hop pioneer, whose real name is Jason Mizell, of a showing up at his Jamaica Avenue studio in October of 2002, entering through a rarely used back door, and carrying out the murder in retaliation for being cut out of a large cocaine deal.

The two people who were within feet of Mizelle when he was shot in the head, gave highly emotional, tearful testimony.

A second shooting victim, Tony Rincon, testified that Jordan “walked directly to Jay, kind of gave him half a handshake and at the same time, that’s when I hear a couple of shots. I see Jay just fall.”

Darla Miles is in Downtown Brooklyn with the latest.

Defense attorneys, however, poked holes in the evidence — or lack thereof — in the 21-year-old cold case. No gun was ever recovered.

The crime scene unit didn’t process the alleged point of entry, the back door, and the only DNA found at the scene was that of a third suspect charged in the case, not Jordan or Washington.

Unlicensed driver arrested after crash kills 14-year-old walking block from NYC home: NYPD

    [ad_1]

A Brooklyn man was arrested for driving without a license when he allegedly caused a violent chain-reaction crash that killed a 14-year-old walking in his neighborhood, police announced.

The arrest followed a Saturday evening crash in Canarsie where police said Rayan Salmon, 45, struck a car before spinning into the teen.

An investigation of the crash determined Salmon was driving near East 81st Street and Glenwood Road when he hit a second vehicle, police said. The impact of that crash sent Salmon’s car spinning clockwise and into 14-year-old Christian Antoine, who was walking about a block from his home at the time, according to police records.

The crash happened around 6:15 p.m., roughly an hour after sunset.

Medics took Antoine to a nearby hospital, but life-saving measures were not successful and he was pronounced dead.

Police said both drivers involved in the crash were taken to hospitals as well, and were expected to survive.

It wasn’t clear if Salmon would face any additional charges. Attorney information for the man was not immediately known.

The NYPD Highway District Collision Investigation Squad is looking into the crash.

  • Is Taylor Swift Teasing Her Next Release Through Subliminal Footwear Messaging?

Is Taylor Swift Teasing Her Next Release Through Subliminal Footwear Messaging?

    [ad_1]

It’s well established by now that Taylor Swift has a big reputation for Easter eggs and hidden clues, slipping hidden messages into her album’s liner notes to subtly shout out friends since the beginning, and maybe even hinting at her then-secret relationship with Travis Kelce with via an opal necklace all the way back in early September, weeks before she showed up at a Kansas City Chiefs game for the first time. Which makes us feel slightly less unhinged to point out what Swift, who was spotted paying a visit to Electric Lady Studios in New York City earlier this week, wore Wednesday evening, and wondering whether it’s a hint to an upcoming album announcement.

Swift stepped out in Brooklyn Wednesday with known associate Blake Lively wearing a pair of over-the-knee snake print boots to grab pizza at Lucali. The boots are by Jimmy Choo and retail for $2,450, but you can’t put a price tag on speculation over whether this is yet another hint that Swift is getting set to announce the release of her next re-recording as Reputation (Taylor’s Version).

The original 2017 release of Reputation, Swift’s final studio album released by her former Big Machine label (its masters are owned by music mogul/Swift nemesis Scooter Braun), was rife with snake imagery in reference to her feud with Kanye West and then-wife Kim Kardashian, which began in 2016. It was a different time: Snapchat was a well-trod battlefield in this war, which, to give a broad summary, stemmed from West’s track “Famous” and whether or not Swift gave her blessing on a line that drops her name. The ammunition: so many emojis. Swift extended that serpentine motif through the album’s merch and the Reputation tour, facing off against the creatures onstage and even soaring above the audience in a giant animatronic snake. Subtle.

Given the significance of snakes in Swiftian history, then, it’s not a leap to wonder whether these boots are not only a fashionable footwear choice but also a hint. Her outfit at last Sunday’s Golden Globes also stoked speculation: Was that shimmering green Gucci number, whose all-over sequins could be seen as scale-like, a hint as well? Or was its pairing with pal Keleigh Sperry‘s aqua gown a gesture in a different direction, since the vivid green-and-blue color palette is similar to the color scheme for her debut album’s art—the only older album, apart from Reputation, that hasn’t been re-released.

On the other hand, Swift’s olive green crushed velvet minidress is very folklore-coded, matching that album’s woodsy aesthetic, and we have no reason to think there may be an announcement about that album forthcoming. There’s plenty to speculate a-boot, but maybe a boot is just a boot.

Representatives for Taylor Swift did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A 35-year-old man was shot dead in the lobby of a Brooklyn housing project, police said Monday.

Richard Reed was shot in the chest in the lobby of a Farragut Houses building on Sands St. near Navy St. near Downtown Brooklyn about 10 p.m. Sunday, cops said.

Medics rushed Reed to Brooklyn Methodist Hospital but he could not be saved. He lived in a Farragut Houses building around the corner from the one he was shot in.

The killer, who was wearing a mask, green jacket and black pants, ran off and has not been caught.

Cops recovered two shell casings from the scene.

In October 2022, a 37-year-old man was shot in front of the same Farragut building by a gunman who died a short time later after going into cardiac arrest when police arrested him. That shooting victim survived.

  • 'We need order in this city': Brooklyn Bridge ban on souvenir sellers kicks in

'We need order in this city': Brooklyn Bridge ban on souvenir sellers kicks in

    [ad_1]

Visitors to New York City hoping to take home a souvenir from the Brooklyn Bridge will now have to settle for a photograph, as vendors are about to be banned from the iconic span.

The new rule, which goes into effect Wednesday, aims to ease overcrowding on the bridge’s heavily trafficked pedestrian walkway, where dozens of trinket sellers currently compete for space with tourists and city commuters.

As crowds flocked to the bridge over the holiday season, the situation turned dangerous, according to New York City Mayor Eric Adams. He pointed to videos that showed pedestrians leaping from the elevated walkway onto a bike lane several feet below in order to bypass a human traffic jam.

“It’s not only a sanitary issue, it’s a public safety issue,” Adams said on Tuesday. “People would’ve trampled over each other. We need order in this city. That is one of our major landmarks.”

The new rules will apply to all of the city’s bridges — though none have close to as many vendors as the 140-year-old Brooklyn Bridge, which is often lined with tables offering phone cases, knock-off Yankees caps, novelty license plates and more.

Those who sell items on the bridge acknowledge that vendors have proliferated in recent years, driven by relaxed enforcement during the coronavirus pandemic and the availability of low-priced merchandise. A decision two years ago to relocate cyclists to a lane of the roadway also freed up space for stalls.

In the middle span of the bridge, entrepreneurs have now set up nearly a dozen rotating selfie platforms where tourists can pay to take panoramic photos.

MD Rahman, who has sold hot dogs and pretzels out of a cart on the bridge for 15 years, said he understands the need to crack down on the illicit vendors. But he criticized the city’s plan as overly broad, since it also applies to veteran sellers, like himself, who hold mobile vending licenses.

“The problem is the illegal and unlicensed people selling things up there,” Rahman said, pointing to the newer group of vendors in the middle of the bridge. “To punish everyone, it’s crazy. I don’t know what is going to happen to my family now.”

In recent days, police officers have posted flyers in multiple languages across the bridge, telling vendors they will have to leave. But some had doubts about whether the city would actually follow through on the plan.

“Maybe I come back in a few weeks,” said Qiu Lan Liu, a vendor selling hats and T-shirts, many of them featuring the New York Police Department’s insignia, NYPD. “I’ll see what other people do.”

As news spread of the coming ban, some tourists said they were taking advantage of the low-priced souvenirs while they were still available. Ana Souza, an Oklahoma resident, proudly held an “I Love New York” tote she’d found for just $10, a fraction of the price she’d seen at brick-and-mortar shops.

Jenny Acuchi was visiting New York from Oakland, California. “It’s a little crowded, but not as much as I expected,” she said. “The thing that makes it crowded is that everyone is taking photos.”

Among the supporters of the new rules were some disability rights advocates, who said the ban would immediately improve access for wheelchair users. In a statement, the city’s transportation chief Ydanis Rodriguez celebrated the improvements to an attraction he dubbed “America’s Eiffel Tower.”

Rashawn Prince, who uses the bridge to sells copies of his self-published book, “How to Roll a Blunt for Dummies!” said he was unmoved by the comparison.

“I’ve been to the Eiffel Tower,” Prince said. “There’s vendors there, too.”

80 displaced in New Year’s Eve apartment building fire in Brooklyn

    02:25

NEW YORK — Firefighters battled a large fire at a Brooklyn apartment building Sunday night.

It happened just after 7 p.m. on Schenck Avenue near Wortman Avenue in East New York.

Fire officials say crews arrived to find fire in the courtyard of the building, where there were building materials and scaffolding. The fire spread inside the building and into about 12 apartments, some of which were unoccupied.

Some residents were told to shelter in place while others were told to evacuate.

Officials say seven people, including two children and two firefighters, were taken to a local hospital. All seven suffered minor smoke inhalation.

Some neighbors say they heard fireworks outside, then looked out to see the courtyard on fire, causing chaos and sending people running out of the building.

“I heard the fireworks, and right after the fireworks, I heard everybody and the commotion in the hallway,” one resident said. “I panicked, grabbed my jacket and my bag. Luckily, I keep my handbag on my bed.”

“I heard the boom, boom, boom, and when I came on out, back on the other side of the building, it’s on fire. Like a bonfire. But I’m glad everybody is out, thank God,” resident Susan Aeiken said.

Officials say 80 people have been displaced and were taken to a temporary shelter.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Santa Clause Gets Lap Dance Onstage With Madonna – Falls On Dancer

Things got weird at a Madonna concert on Tuesday night when a man dressed as Santa Clause got a lap dance while onstage with the “Like A Virgin” singer. The Santa figure then fell off his chair and onto the backup dancer who had been performing the lap dance.

    Madonna’s Santa Debacle

Daily Mail reported that video that has since gone viral shows Madonna performing onstage with a person dressed as Santa on Tuesday night during her Celebration tour stop in Washington D.C. Santa sat in a chair in the middle of the stage while the 65 year-old “Vogue” singer performed nearby.

Santa was eventually approached by a female backup dance who claimed onto his lap and proceeded to give him a lap dance. Both Santa and the dancer soon fell out of the chair, with him ending up on top of her as Madonna looked on in shock. The dancer immediately returned to dancing while Santa tried to compose himself and get up.

Madonna Reveals She Was In A Coma

This came days after Madonna revealed that she was in a medically induced coma for 48 hours back in June when she was hospitalized with a bacterial infection. She dropped this bomb during another tour stop in Brooklyn, New York on Saturday night, giving a personal shoutout to her friend Shavawn.

“There are some very important people in the room tonight that were with me at the hospital,” Madonna said. “There’s one very important woman who dragged me to the hospital.”

“I don’t even remember; I passed out on my bathroom floor and woke up in the ICU,” she added. “I was in an induced coma for 48 hours. She saved my life. Thank you Shavawn.”

People Magazine went on to reveal the first things she thought about when she finally came out of the coma.

“There were a couple of things I thought about when I first became conscious and I saw my six incredible children sitting around me — by the way, I had to almost die to get all my kids in one room,” she said, referring to Lourdes, 27, Rocco, 23, David Banda, 18, Mercy James, 17, and 11-year-old twins Estere and Stella.

Megyn Kelly Calls For Taylor Swift Boycott After Singer Attends Gaza Charity Event

    [ad_1]

Source: Screenshot Megyn Kelly YouTube, CBS Sunday Morning YouTube

Megyn Kelly is calling for fans to boycott Taylor Swift after the singer attended a comedy night in Brooklyn that donated proceeds to a charity working in Gaza.

Kelly Calls For Boycott Of Swift

Daily Mail reported that Kelly mocked Swift for claiming to support women’s rights and the LGBTQ community, yet still backing a Gaza charity.

“You clearly know nothing,” Kelly said, addressing Swift directly in her rant. “You know what they do to that community in Gaza, Taylor, that you now want to support?”

“You know what Hamas likes to do to women?” she added. “You think we have equal rights over there, Taylor?”

Last Friday, Swift, 34, was spotted at a Ramy Youssef show at the Brooklyn Academy of Music with friends that included the actress Selena Gomez, Cara Delevingne and Zoe Kravitz. Youssef had previously announced that proceeds from the last 12 nights of his “More Feelings” tour would go to the American Near East Refugee Aid (ANERA).

Kelly described ANERA as being “highly political, presenting a highly biased view of the Israel/Palestine war, ignoring any Palestinian responsibility for hardship, and contributing to the demonization of Israel.”

“That is the group Taylor Swift thought it might be fun to help raise money for, attend a fundraiser for, and she owes Israelis and Jewish Americans an apology,” Kelly concluded. “And I hope they boycott her events until she issues it because attending this thing was wrong. It was wrong.”

    Swift’s Deafening Silence On Israel

Swift has yet to comment on any of the backlash she’s received for attending this event. Swift also has not commented publicly at all about the conflict between Israel and Hamas, who murdered and kidnapped hundreds of Israelis in terrorist attacks carried out on October 7.

Newsweek reported that after Swift was named Time’s Person of the Year last week, some said that her silence about Israel meant that she did not deserve this honor.

“I’m a massive Taylor Swift fan, and you can make the argument that pop stars shouldn’t need to speak out about war/conflict/genocide (I disagree but you can argue this),” one social media user commented. “But Taylor has defined herself as someone who now speaks out on issues, even if it costs her.”

“Taylor must feel something about the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza,” the user continued. “Her silence is an active choice and it betrays the image of herself that she created.”

    Swift’s Liberal Politics

While Swift has been silent about the Israel-Hamas conflict, she’s been all too happy to preach about liberal causes as a proud Democrat in the past. Back in 2020, she accused then-President Donald Trump of trying to “blatantly cheat” to win the election.

“Donald Trump’s ineffective leadership gravely worsened the crisis that we are in, and he is now taking advantage of it to subvert and destroy our right to vote and vote safely. Request a ballot early. Vote early,” she said at the time, according to Fox News. “We will vote you out in November.”

It’s always rich when liberals like Swift who claim to stand for women and LGBTQ people support Hamas, which is perhaps the most anti-feminist and anti-LGBTQ group on the planet. In the end, Swift shouldn’t be surprised if Kelly’s calls for a boycott do end up coming true.

A 61-year-old suspect has been charged with beating a fellow homeless man to death during a drunken clash at their encampment in a Brooklyn park, police said Monday.

Raul Hernandez was charged Saturday with murder and weapons possession, police said.

Hernandez allegedly attacked the victim about 1 p.m. Friday during a drunken argument at their encampment on a handball court on the Brooklyn side of Highland Park, cops said.

The victim may have been struck with a knife, police said, though a weapon was not recovered. from the scene near Jamaica Ave. and Cleveland St. in Cypress Hills, cops said.

Medics rushed the victim to Brookdale University Hospital, where he later died. He is believed to be in his 50s but police are still trying to determine his identity,

The killing may have been retaliation for a previous fight, cops said. A woman who lives nearby told the Daily News Friday the two men and a third man “argued sometimes about territory, who got to sleep where.” Her husband, who like his wife declined to give his name, said he had earlier in the day had beers with the victim and suspect.

“Me and my wife used to bring them food and drink beer with them, have a good time. I was with them earlier and we were just hanging out,” said the man. “When I came back I saw the police tape and one of them was dead.”

Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s Gardening Guides: Cult Status

    [ad_1]

Whenever I visit a used bookshop, I march straight to the garden section. Once there, I’ll scan the shelves for slender paperback spines about nine inches tall. I’m looking for the Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s handbooks, and whenever I find one, I feel like I’ve hit the jackpot. My gardening book library is full of beautiful coffee table books, and I have my fair share of instructional tomes like the indispensable Reader’s Digest Illustrated Guide to Gardening, but for practical, actionable advice and ideas, nothing beats BBG’s handbooks.

The Garden began publishing the single-topic guides in 1945. According to Elizabeth Peters, the director of digital and print media at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, the original format was more like a bound magazine, published quarterly. “Over time these became the more intentionally edited and assigned books you are familiar with,” she adds.

Above: The Garden still carries some of the original handbooks. You can purchase them on the site; $9.95 to $15.95.

The primers had something of a heyday in the 1990s and early aughts under the leadership of Janet Marinelli, who was BBG’s editorial director for 17 years. “The series was esteemed for leadership in ecological practice topics, including native plants, wildlife support, building soils and plant communities, and an overall right-plant, right-place ethos,” Peters notes. But the series came to a halt in 2015, ending its run after the publication of Japanese-Style Gardens.

“The rise of the Internet and the ubiquity of information and broader focus on the ecological practices we had been promoting eroded the audience,” says Peters. “Rather than moving to publishing coffee-table type books, we phased out the series and now focus on digital content.” The Garden still sells more than a dozen of its handbooks through its site, including Easy Compost, which Peters notes was one of the most popular titles in the series, but for the rest, you’ll have to scour secondhand shops, Amazon’s marketplace, or eBay.

You can find used versions of the handbooks online. This Lot of 5 is $12.99 on eBay.

I’m not alone in my enthusiasm for the out-of-print guides. Erin Scottberg, a writer, garden designer, and Brooklyn Botanic Garden-certified urban horticulturist, has also amassed a collection of the out-of-print guides. “These booklets are so well-written and laid out, making them easy to digest,” Scottberg says. “Each one covers a specific topic that’s narrow enough to not be overwhelming, but not so narrow that they’re not applicable.”

Horticulturalist Heather McCargo, the founder of the non-profit Wild Seed Project, also has a longstanding fondness for the series. She recalls becoming a member of the garden just to gain access to the handbooks. A few years back, McCargo and her team were contemplating a new format for their annual report when she was inspired to create their own single-topic handbooks. (The Wild Seed Project books are the exact same proportions as their predecessors, so they sit beautifully together on a shelf.)

My collection of BBG gardening guides on the bookshelf.

For many of us, myself included, nothing beats the physicality of a small book. “I love the scale: They’re designed to be flipped through with just one hand,” says Jess Gildea, McCargo’s colleague at the Wild Seed Project. “You can have your seed catalog open in front of you, your guide in one hand, and a pen in the other.” And unlike a digital article, you can make notes in the margins, underline key information.

So, if you’re browsing a bookstore in the Northeast, keep an eye out for these treasured books. Or kickstart your own collection with a bundle of handbooks (more here and here, and the motherlode here).

  • $500 million entertainment centre touted for Sydney’s CBD – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

$500 million entertainment centre touted for Sydney’s CBD – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

    [ad_1]

The Sydney CBD desperately needs a new indoor entertainment arena and the NSW Government has been urged to conduct a feasibility study to identify public land where it can be built.

Developers believe up to $500 million of private capital could be invested at no cost to the taxpayer if public land were released with the covered stadium returning to public control once a long lease had expired.

Plans are already being drawn up for a 10,000 seat indoor stadium at the Entertainment Quarter but are reliant on the current 23-year lease being extended to make the investment worthwhile.

Tony Shepherd, chairman of the Entertainment Quarter, said discussions with the NSW government were ongoing to extend the lease and clear the way for $2 billion of investment in the old Easter Show site.

“Part of that development includes a new multipurpose, fully enclosed arena which we think is something Sydney really needs close to the city centre,” he said.

The $500 million arena would be able to accommodate professional basketball matches, boxing contests and mid-sized concert performances.

Sydney only has Qudos Bank Arena at Homebush and nothing to rival Melbourne Arena and Rod Laver Arena in the centre of Melbourne. Potential sites for a new arena include the Bays Precinct and land seized from the Moore Park golf course.

Tom Forrest, chief executive of the Urban Taskforce, said private investors could be encouraged to build an arena on government land and called for the NSW Government to…

  • NYC Jewish sites hit with bomb threats, fake grenades, as Gaza war continues: NYPD

NYC Jewish sites hit with bomb threats, fake grenades, as Gaza war continues: NYPD

    [ad_1]

Reported bombs at separate Jewish sites caused alarm on Saturday and prompted NYPD as anti-Semitic incidents sparked by the war in Gaza continue to rise, police said.

First, police were called to Holocaust Memorial Park on West End Ave. in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, just before 10 a.m. when someone walking through the park found a grenade among the markers dedicated to Jews killed during the Nazi regime.

The NYPD Bomb Squad was called and ultimately cleared the scene after the grenade was found to be inert, an NYPD spokesman said.

No one was injured and no arrests were made.

Less than an hour later, someone texted 911, claiming that he had left two backpacks filled with pipe bombs inside Central Synagogue on Lexington Ave. near E. 54th St. in Midtown.

Cops responded to the scene, but found nothing, cops said. The synagogue wasn’t evacuated.

The two incidents come as hate crimes against Jews in the city has nearly tripled during the month-long war in Israel.

Since Oct. 7, when a series of sneak attacks on Israeli communities near Gaza sparked the ongoing conflict, the NYPD has investigated 82 anti-Semitic incidents, 31 more than the previous year. That’s a jump of 164%, cops said.

There have also been eight hate crimes against Muslims. This time last year there were none, cops said.

Throughout October, 69 anti-Semitic incidents were reported in the city, compared to 22 in October 2022 — a 214% increase, officials said.

Blowback from the war in Israel is a daily concern for Jewish New Yorkers, Bob Moskovitz, executive coordinator of the Flatbush Shomrim Safety Patrol in Brooklyn, told the Daily News Wednesday.

“We’re feeling it 100%,” Moskovitz said of the uptick in hate crimes. “Our hotline, which the community utilizes to report any incident has probably increased in this last month and a half by 300%. The phone is simply not stopping.”

  • Son gunned down alongside dad in Brooklyn noise dispute remembered as ‘polite young man’

Son gunned down alongside dad in Brooklyn noise dispute remembered as ‘polite young man’

    [ad_1]

A neighbor of the Brooklyn man gunned down alongside his stepdad in a deadly dispute over noise from their apartment remembered the younger victim Thursday as deserving of a better fate.

Chinwai Mode, 27, was a “polite young man,” the 38-year-old resident told the Daily News. “Didn’t do nothing wrong. No problems. He would help me bring in my groceries, my laundry … That kid didn’t give no problems.”

Mode was shot to death last Sunday alongside his father Bladimy Mathurin, 47, in a caught-on-video double-homicide in which Jason Pass opened fire to end a long-running noise complaint against the neighbors living above his mother’s apartment, police said. Pass, also 47, was himself shot to death Wednesday morning on a Brooklyn street after charging at police officers with a knife in his hand, cops said.

Chinwai Mode was shot and killed in a fourth-floor hallway outside his apartment on Sunday in Brooklyn.

The neighbor said he believed Pass confronted the two victims with murder on his mind.

“Everything was ready to go,” he said. “That gun was already cocked. He came for blood … I wish the streets caught up with him. But he got what he deserved.”

A 27-year-old female neighbor said the senseless shootings left her feeling bad for everyone involved.

“Three lives lost because of a noise complaint,” she said. “I feel like it just got to a point it shouldn’t have gotten. I don’t think he should have gone up there with a gun if it was just going to be a complaint.”

An online fundraising effort was launched to raise money for the Mathurin family to relocate from the building where the twin homicides occurred, noting their once-happy home had now become a crime scene. The gunman’s mother was also still residing one floor below the mourning family.

“Imagine having to relive the gruesome death of a loved one at the hands of a murderer every time you walk into your apartment,” read the appeal. “That’s the reality of Bladimy Mathurin’s widow, his 10-year-old daughter, 18-year-old son and 23-year-old daughter who witnessed the earth-shattering executions.”

The body-building father “was a source of inspiration and an example of gallantry for his son, Chinwai, a music lover whose light will be deeply missed as well,” the message continued.

A high-ranking police source told The News that cops have yet to find the gun Pass used to kill his two victims inside a hallway of their East Flatbush Gardens building. The weapon was not inside the car driven by the suspect before his deadly confrontation with the NYPD, the source indicated.

Pass served eight years in the U.S. Army, deploying to Afghanistan and Iraq while earning numerous medals, his sister told The News. He also worked at the World Trade Center site after the 9/11 attacks.

“He was a brother, an uncle, a son, a cousin,” she said. “If I could turn back time, I would. But he’s in heaven with his father.”

The state Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation opened a probe Thursday into the shooting as required by state law for any death involving law enforcement.

Another building resident told The News that he wanted to move out of his apartment in the aftermath of the murders. The 34-year-old neighbor said he had a similar issue with noisy neighbors, adding the walls and the floors of the residence were too thin.

“When I heard the situation was exactly like mine, I was shocked,” he said. “It’s because of disrespect. This is the lesson for all of us. It’s all about the respect.”

  • On-the-run Jason Pass shot by cops, nabbed for slay of upstairs Brooklyn neighbors over noise complaints

On-the-run Jason Pass shot by cops, nabbed for slay of upstairs Brooklyn neighbors over noise complaints

    [ad_1]

The on-the-run Brooklyn man wanted for shooting two upstairs neighbors to death over noise complaints was nabbed after being shot by NYPD cops early Wednesday, police sources said.

Jason Pass, 47, has been on the run since Sunday night after he was caught on video fatally shooting 47-year-old Bladimy Mathurin and Mathurin’s 27-year-old stepson Chin Wai Mode in the hallway of their Flatbush Gardens apartment building.

About 7:15 a.m. Wednesday, cops found Pass on Bay 44th St. in Bath Beach, Brooklyn, sources said.

Bladimy Mathurin (left) and his stepson, Chin Wai Mode (right), were shot and killed in a fourth-floor hallway outside their apartment on Sunday in Brooklyn.

Pass was shot by officers as they tried to arrest him, a police source said. Pass was armed with a knife when he was shot, a second police source said.

The former state corrections officer was wounded and taken to a local hospital.

Pass, who often stays with his elderly mother in the apartment directly below Mathurin’s fourth-floor pad on Brooklyn Ave. in East Flatbush, had long complained about the noise the family upstairs was making, according to police.

A woman who identified herself as Pass’ older sister on Tuesday confirmed the ongoing quarrel but claimed Mathurin and his family had threatened her mom and brother prior to that.

On the night of the killing, Pass went upstairs simply to talk to Mathurin “about the jumping and moving furniture and all these situations,” she claimed.

The shooting, she claimed, was “self defense.”

Mathurin brandished a pair of scissors as Sunday’s hallway argument escalated, video obtained by The Daily News shows.

Pass is seen pulling a pistol with a green laser scope and opening fire on Mathurin as the victim’s back was turned.

The Brooklyn bodybuilder was talking to his wife, who was begging him to go back inside when Pass started blasting away, the video shows.

Just moments earlier, the two men stood toe-to-toe as Mathurin held a pair of scissors to Pass’ chest, but the gunman appeared to be in no immediate danger when he pulled his gun and started firing.

Mathurin was repeatedly shot in the back and the head as he ran back to his apartment. Mode, Mathurin’s stepson, was fatally shot trying to run to the hallway staircase, the video shows.

After shooting both men, Pass didn’t make a quick escape. Instead, he called the elevator and waited about 20 seconds for it to arrive, the video shows.

Pass had a short-lived career as a corrections officer at Sing Sing Correctional Facility in Westchester and was terminated in 2005, according to Department of Corrections and Community Supervision spokesperson Thomas Mailey.

The suspected gunman was fired from the department in June of that year, the same month The News reported he’d pulled a pistol on two plainclothes police officers in a road rage incident on Ralph Ave. in Flatlands, Brooklyn.
