  • What we learned as 49ers’ resilient 2025 NFL season ends with blowout NFC playoff loss to Seahawks

    The 49ers’ resilient and impressive 2025 NFL season ended Saturday with a crushing blowout 41-6 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Divisional Playoff at Lumen Field.

    Seattle put San Francisco in a deep hole just 13 seconds into the game when return man Rashid Shaheed took the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown.

    The 49ers never recovered from that seismic moment.

    A fumble by tight end Jake Tonges set up another Seahawks touchdown, and by the end of the first quarter, the 49ers were down 17-0.

    Kicker Eddy Piñeiro got the 49ers on the board with two second-quarter field goals, but that was the extent of San Francisco’s offensive output.

    Quarterback Brock Purdy entered Saturday’s game 4-0 in Seattle, but he suffered his first career blemish in the Pacific Northwest.

    Purdy ultimately completed 15 of 27 pass attempts for 140 yards. He didn’t throw any touchdown passes, was intercepted once and lost one fumble.

    Running back Christian McCaffrey was bottled up by the elite Seahawks defense, as he was held to 35 rushing yards on 11 carries. He caught five passes for 39 yards.

    Purdy led the 49ers in rushing, with 37 yards on five carries.

    Seattle put the game out of reach just before halftime when Kenneth Walker III ran it in for a 7-yard touchdown to make it 24-6.

    Tonges, filling in for the injured George Kittle, led the 49ers with 59 yards on five receptions.

    Purdy’s third-quarter interception turned into another Walker touchdown a few minutes later, giving the Seahawks a commanding 34-6 lead.

    Robert Saleh’s defense, which did an admirable job considering all the injuries it endured this season, was gashed by the Seahawks. Walker finished with 116 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries.

    Now, the 49ers will wait to see if they lose Saleh, who is interviewing for several head coaching jobs.

    After a bounce-back 12-5 season, the 49ers head into an offseason full of questions. Linebacker Fred Warner and defensive linemen Nick Bosa and Mykel Williams will be back, but Kittle will miss a large portion of the 2026 NFL season and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk isn’t expected to return to the team.

    The 49ers know they have a roster that can compete for a Super Bowl title, so general manager John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan will spend the offseason figuring out how to improve the roster.

    Here are Matt Maiocco’s takeaways from the 49ers’ season-ending loss:

    Thirteen seconds of agony

    The 49ers were much-improved on special teams this season, but that unit had the worst-possible opening on Saturday night.

    And because of it, the 49ers were forced to play uphill from the first play of the game all the way through.

    Shaheed fielded the opening kickoff at the 5-yard line and found a huge opening in the center of the field. Chase Lucas had a shot at stopping Shaheed around the 40-yard line, but he ran through the tackle attempt with ease.

    Shaheed had one man to beat, and the kicker tried to make a kick save. Eddy Piñeiro failed in his attempt to trip Shaheed, and Shaheed cruised into the end zone for a 95-yard touchdown.

    That play got the juiced-up crowd to crank up the volume even louder, and made the environment even more difficult for the road team. And things did not get a whole lot better for the 49ers from that point forward.

    The end of the line

    There will come a time for reflection on the 49ers’ season.

    But that time was not on Saturday night in the aftermath of their overwhelming defeat.

    Yes, the 49ers might have accomplished a lot with a 12-5 record while dealing with a ton of adversity. They were underdogs in the first round of the NFC playoffs, and they managed to go into Philadelphia and end the Eagles’ bid for a repeat Super Bowl title.

    That gave the 49ers hope that just about anything was possible this season.

    The way this season ended was a major letdown. It was borderline embarrassing for a proud team that has remained stuck on five Super Bowl titles for more than three decades.

    The Seahawks outplayed the 49ers in every which way.

    The 49ers got manhandled.

    The season came to an end with an emphatic thud. And that was a major disappointment after they had convinced themselves they could put together a deep postseason run and, possibly, even take the field at Levi’s Stadium in Super Bowl 60.

    Looking ahead to ’26

    The 49ers hope Warner, Bosa and Kittle will return to being highly productive players and key figures of the team next season.

    Those players returning from injuries, along with first-round pick Mykel Williams, should give the 49ers a boost next season. But it cannot end there, either.

    Lynch must stack a good draft class onto the roster, and many of the young players on the roster must make significant strides in 2026.

    The 49ers’ top scheduled free agent is wide receiver Jauan Jennings. The sides could not come together on a contract extension before the start of this season, so it is anything but a guarantee that Jennings will be back.

    The 49ers expect to have six draft picks within the first four rounds, and there are plenty of areas for them to address: Wide receiver, tight end, offensive line, defensive line and defensive back top the list.

    Aiyuk stopped showing up for his required rehab sessions, prompting the team to void all remaining guaranteed money. The 49ers do not owe Aiyuk another penny. That should open up some cash for them to spend elsewhere, perhaps allowing them to add a key free agent or two.

    The 49ers have a lot of work to do, and they need to find the next generation of stars to ultimately replace their aging nucleus.

  • Christian McCaffrey shines vs former Panthers, leads 49ers to Monday night victory

    Christian McCaffrey faced his former Carolina Panthers team for the first time since his trade to the San Francisco 49ers in 2022.

    The All-Pro running back powered San Francisco to a 20-9 victory on “Monday Night Football,” finding the end zone and leading both teams in total yards from scrimmage.

    The 49ers (8-4) are now firmly in the NFC playoff picture, while the Panthers (6-6) missed a chance to take sole possession of the NFC South lead.

    While McCaffrey shined on the primetime stage, it was a rough night for both quarterbacks.

    Brock Purdy, who threw three touchdowns in his return the previous week, struggled with turnovers, tossing three interceptions on consecutive possessions in the first half.

    San Francisco opened strong with a 15-play, 75-yard touchdown drive, capped by Purdy’s short pass to Jauan Jennings, who fought through three Panthers defenders to score. But after a quick Panthers three-and-out, Purdy’s first pass on the next series was picked off by Jaycee Horn, giving Carolina the ball at the San Francisco 16-yard line.

    But this night wasn’t just about Purdy’s turnovers — Young had some issues as well.

    On first-and-goal from the 1, Young appeared to have room to run toward the pylon, but he instead tried a pass to tight end Mitchell Evans. Ji’Ayir Brown was right there to snag the interception in the end zone and bail out Purdy for his earlier mistake.

    Unfortunately for San Francisco, Purdy was picked off by Mike Jackson in the opposite end zone when he tried to find Ricky Pearsall for a touchdown. The route was read perfectly by the veteran cornerback. Upon replay, tight end George Kittle appeared wide open and might have scored with a short pass, but Purdy was looking for the big play on the throw.

    Then Purdy was really kicking himself after Horn secured his second interception of the game — a savvy play as he roamed free in the middle of the field and Purdy simply didn’t see him on a pass intended for Pearsall. The Panthers finally got points on the board after a field goal cut the deficit to 7-3.

    It was only 10-3 at halftime, but the 49ers finally got McCaffrey into the end zone in the third quarter against his former team. His 12-yard touchdown run capped a 13-play, 80-yard drive by San Francisco, where the star back got key blocks from Kittle and fullback Kyle Juszczyk to reach the end zone.

    McCaffrey finished the game with 89 rushing yards and seven catches for 53 yards.

    The Panthers weren’t completely out of the game despite the 17-3 deficit, thanks to rookie receiver Tetairoa McMillan hauling in a 29-yard strike from Young with 49 seconds left in the third quarter to make it a 17-9 game after a failed two-point conversion.

    The 49ers created some separation after adding another field goal, but the Panthers still had plenty of time in the fourth quarter to make things interesting. Unfortunately for them, Brown jumped a route across the middle intended for McMillan, and Young threw it right to him.

    The interception virtually iced the game, as Ryan Fitzgerald missed a 57-yard field goal with 2:47 left in the fourth quarter during the Panthers’ desperate attempt to get points.

    Looking at the box score, Kittle led the game with 78 yards on six catches, while Jennings finished with 41 yards on five grabs.

    For the Panthers, Rico Dowdle, Chuba Hubbard and Young combined for just 69 rushing yards, though Dowdle had four catches for 36 yards. Hubbard added four catches for 27 yards.

  • 49ers’ Brock Purdy breaks silence on surgery rumors

    When San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy was diagnosed with a toe injury following Week 1, some felt it was an ailment that wouldn’t keep him out of action for that long. But he has missed every game, save for a Week 4 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars, since then.

    He is now slated to return and start this Sunday when the Niners visit the Arizona Cardinals. He finally became a full participant in practice on Thursday, and it was a welcome development, given how ravaged they have been by injuries dating back to the beginning of last season.

    Per Vic Tafur of The Athletic, surgery was never an option for Purdy. Despite there being rumors that his turf toe would be similar to Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, that was apparently not the case.

    Purdy, the last player chosen in the 2022 NFL Draft, became the team’s starter in Week 13 of that season after Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo both suffered season-ending injuries. He made the Pro Bowl in 2023 while leading the league in passer rating, quarterback rating and touchdown percentage.

    While he has been out, Mac Jones, the No. 15 pick in the 2021 draft, has filled in ably. He was thought to be a bust just months ago, but he has thrown for 2,151 yards and 13 touchdowns while completing 69.6% of his pass attempts in eight games this season.

    Jones has played so well and has looked so poised, and the team has done such a solid job with him at the controls that there has been talk lately about a possible quarterback controversy brewing in the Bay Area.

    While some pundits have called on San Francisco to stick with Jones, at least for the time being, at QB1, head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that Purdy will be starting under center this weekend. After all, Purdy has been in Shanahan’s system for three years and has more chemistry with the team’s skill players than Jones, who is in his first season with San Francisco, does.

    The Niners currently have a 6-4 record after losing to the Los Angeles Rams this past Sunday and are 1.5 games behind the Rams and Seattle Seahawks for first place in the NFC West. After facing Arizona this weekend, they will play the Carolina Panthers and Cleveland Browns before they have their bye in Week 14.

  • 49ers’ Purdy, Pearsall, Jennings ruled out for Rams game Thursday with injuries

    The injury-ravaged San Francisco 49ers will again be missing multiple starters with injuries for the Thursday night game against the Los Angeles Rams.

    Quarterback Brock Purdy will miss his third game of the season because of an injury to his toe. The Niners (3-1) also ruled out starting receivers Ricky Pearsall and Jauan Jennings for the division showdown, with Pearsall out because of a knee injury and Jennings with injuries to his ankle and ribs.

    Purdy missed games in Week 2 and 3 with the injured toe before returning this past Sunday against Jacksonville. He came out of that game with more soreness and will be unable to play on a short week.

    Mac Jones will start in Purdy’s place. Jones won both starts in Purdy’s absence earlier this season, throwing for 563 yards with four TDs and one interception in wins over New Orleans and Arizona.

    San Francisco is already without tight end George Kittle, who went on injured reserve with a hamstring injury following the season opener, and star defensive end Nick Bosa, who had a season-ending knee injury. Kittle’s earliest possible return would be Week 6, when the 49ers play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Oct. 12, but there have been no updates on his return.

    Purdy struggled at times against the Jaguars, missing several throws high. He went 22 for 38 for 309 yards and two touchdowns, but also had two interceptions and lost a fumble on a potential game-winning drive late in the fourth quarter. Purdy said he wasn’t sure what impact the injury had on his performance.

    Purdy now will have missed five of San Francisco’s last 12 games with injuries dating to last season.

    Jones said Tuesday he had been preparing as the starter and knows he will have a tough test against the Rams’ defense.

    “They’re, in my opinion, the No. 1 defense in the NFL after watching them,” he said. “I know statistically they’re pretty high, but I’ve really been impressed with them. So, it’s going to be a huge challenge. They do a lot of good stuff.”

    Receiver Jordan Watkins (calf) and defensive end Robert Beal (ankle) also will be out for San Francisco, while rookie defensive tackle C.J. West is questionable with a broken thumb.

    The Rams are much healthier, listing only tackle Rob Havenstein (ankle) and tight end Tyler Higbee (hip) as doubtful.

    It’s Another Fresh Start for All of Philly’s College Football Programs.

    Sure, Labor Day weekend is the unofficial start of the college football around our region. But it’s the following weekend (September 6th, this year) that all of Philly’s collegiate football teams will be in action — the first time since the end of 2024. 

    For Philadelphia — whose city is rooted deep the history of the very beginnings of our great country — college football greatness runs equally as deep in our history. So far — we’ve only got one true football dynasty — the Penn Quakers football team who won the national championship in 1894, 1895, 1897, and again in 1904, and 1907–1908 (unless the present-day Eagles make it happen of course.)

    Last weekend — Philly college’s season began on a high-note. Temple Football began the K.C. Keeler opened his chapter as Head Coach with a 42–10 win over UMass including a 128-yard performance from Jay Ducker and 467 total yards of offense and six touchdowns from quarterback Eric Simon.

    Just over 145 miles away in Happy Valley — Penn State kicked off its season where they left off for most of 2024 with Imhotep Charter’s Mylachi Williams, Jabree Coleman, and Tyseer Denmark among other Philly connections who helped to routed the Nevada Wolfpack and quarterback Chubba Purdy by a final score of 46–11 — including three takeaways and 438 yards of total offense. Fans enjoyed frozen treats on campus from the legendary Penn State Berkey Creamery — whose research program started as far back as as 160 years ago during the American Civil War with over 200 cows still on campus.

    It will be a tough act to follow — with both ABC and ESPN recording a record-setting over ten million viewers for just three games. But for all of Philadelphia’s collegiate programs in action this Saturday for the first time in 2025 — the best is yet to come.

    Brock Purdy threw for 255 yards and three touchdowns, and the San Francisco 49ers avoided another fourth quarter collapse to beat the Seattle Seahawks 36-24.

    Deebo Samuel had a 76-yard catch-and-run touchdown and finished with three catches for 102 yards for the defending NFC champions (3-3), who moved into a tie with Seattle (3-3) for first place in the NFC West after an uneven start to the season.

    George Kittle added five receptions for 58 yards and two scores for the 49ers, who beat the Seahawks for a sixth straight time. Kyle Juszczyk added a late TD run, and he and Kittle both celebrated their scores by leaping into the stands to embrace their wives, who were sitting together in the first row.

    Matthew Wright, who joined San Francisco earlier this week to replace injured kicker Jake Moody, had a trio of first half-field goals from 25, 41 and 35 yards.

    Geno Smith passed for 312 yards and a touchdown but was intercepted twice, and the Seahawks lost their third straight after a 3-0 start under first-year coach Mike Macdonald.

    Four days after blowing a 23-10 halftime lead and losing to division rival Arizona, San Francisco fended off a second-half challenge by Seattle, which got a boost from Laviska Shenault Jr.’s 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the third quarter.

    After the 49ers punted, Smith led a 94-yard drive and Kenneth Walker III scored from 1 yard out to get Seattle within 23-17.

    But Smith’s second interception, this one by Renardo Green, set up Kittle’s second TD of the game and a 29-17 lead for the Niners.

    Smith found Tyler Lockett for a 9-yard scoring pass with 1:44 left to narrow the score to 29-24. San Francisco responded with Isaac Guerendo’s 76-yard dash downfield that led to Juszczyk’s 6-yard TD run.

    Seattle’s struggles with the run game continued, with the team finishing with 20 carries for 52 yards — 32 by Walker.

    Smith was intercepted on Seattle’s opening drive. The Seahawks were on the San Francisco 25 when rookie safety Malik Mustapha pulled down a pass meant for Lockett.

    Jordan Mason broke away for a 38-yard run on San Francisco’s first series, but the drive ended with Wright’s 25-yard field goal.

    Samuel pulled down an early second-quarter pass from Purdy and shook off a defender for the 76-yard TD that put the 49ers up 10-0. Samuel became the first receiver in NFL history with 20 or more rushing touchdowns and 20-plus receiving scores.

    Darrell Luter Jr. forced a fumble on the Seahawks’ kickoff return and Tatum Bethune recovered on the Seattle 29. Wright capped that drive with a 41-yard field goal. Wright’s third field goal gave the Niners a 16-0 lead late in the second quarter.

    Aided by a pass interference call that put the ball on the 2-yard line, Smith threw three incomplete passes before the Seahawks settled for Jason Myers’ 20-yard field goal as the first half expired.

    Purdy found Kittle for a 10-yard touchdown to start the second half that made it 23-3.

    Mason, who left the game in the second quarter with a shoulder injury, later returned and finished with 73 yards on on nine carries for the 49ers as he continues to fill in for the injured Christian McCaffrey.

    Injuries

    San Francisco CB Charvarius Ward was a late scratch with a bruised knee. It was the first game Ward has missed since joining the Niners in 2022.

    As expected, the Seahawks put OLB Uchenna Nwosu on injured reserve with a thigh injury. Nwosu missed the first four games of the regular season with a sprained knee. He played just 20 snaps in Sunday’s loss to the New York Giants before he was hurt again. Mustapha left the game in the first half with an ankle injury and did not return.

    SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) — The San Francisco 49ers are back in the Bay Area Monday after the Super Bowl.

    The team plane landed in San Jose where seven buses were waiting to take the players and staff back to Levi’s Stadium.

    Now begins the long off-season of analyzing what the team needs to do next year — so that the 49ers are able to hold up a Super Bowl trophy for the first time in 30 years.

    LAS VEGAS—Noting that the dazzling Super Bowl performances had been fun but largely antithetical to the competition, sources confirmed Sunday that yet another field goal had been blocked by Cirque Du Soleil performers doing acrobatics on a goal post. “It’s great to see so many sparking leotards and death-defying aerial stunts, but they keep knocking the ball straight out of the air whenever a kicker tries to score,” said spectator Carla Jeffries, adding that no matter how many times the referees blew the whistle, the Cirque Du Soleil performers continued to cartwheel, somersault, and backflip across goalposts at each end of the field. “At first it didn’t seem like a big deal, but then the aerial performers descended from the poles, started riding giant bicycles, walking on stilts, and completely blocking the players from even entering in the end zone. Also, we couldn’t hear anything over the speakers blaring ‘All You Need Is Love.’ Overall, it was extremely frustrating.” At press time, the crowd began to boo after David Copperfield appeared on the field in a puff of smoke and made the ball disappear every time Patrick Mahomes or Brock Purdy tried to throw it.

    LAS VEGAS — The San Francisco 49ers wrapped their week of Super Bowl LVIII prep with a final walkthrough at UNLV’s Fertitta Football Complex on Saturday.

    Shortly after noon, the team’s buses pulled up to the complex for the roughly one-hour walkthrough to review their game openers and certain situations.

    After a 10-minute warmup period, the 49ers spent 40 minutes with the offense running through plays on the far end of one of the practice fields, and the defense working at the opposite end.

    Purdy and Lance competed for the starting quarterback spot in training camp. After months of media speculation, 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan made it clear Purdy had won the starting spot, telling Sports Illustrated in August: “He would have to melt in practice to lose [the job].”

    Trey Lance was traded to the Dallas Cowboys weeks before the season and the Niners came out the gates on a roll.

    The Niners won their first five games, lost the next three and then won eight straight to lock up the No. 1 seed in the NFC before losing to the Los Angeles Rams in Week 18 (when most of the Niners key players were resting for the playoffs).

    Despite a 13-4 season where San Francisco blew their opponents out more often than not, some still poked holes at their success.

    Purdy was named a finalist for the NFL’s Most Valuable Player award. Still, some argued he was being carried by his supporting cast, particularly Christian McCaffrey, who is also a finalist for MVP.

    The 49ers defense is loaded with talent, but they weren’t as statistically dominant as they have been in years past.

    In the NFC Championship Game against the Detroit Lions, the Niners trailed 24-7 at halftime and it looked like the team was going to fall a game short of reaching the Super Bowl for the third consecutive season.

    But in the second half, the script flipped.

    The Niner defense got stops, Purdy made plays and his supporting cast did too. Now all the doubters are going to have to wait a week.

    As for Kansas City, the reigning Super Bowl champs have been facing doubt since the first game of the season, a loss to the Detroit Lions at home.

    Much was made all year long of the Chiefs’ lack of reliable wide receivers. The offense in the regular season was the least dynamic it looked since Patrick Mahomes won league MVP in his first year as the starter in 2018.

    Mahomes still had a reliable security blanket in Travis Kelce and the guidance of one of the greatest NFL coaches ever: Andy Reid. But as the season progressed, narrow victories against weaker teams became memorable losses to playoff teams.

    The spotlight has been on the Chiefs since they beat the 49ers in Super Bowl 54, opening the door for them to be the next great NFL team after 20 years of dominance from Tom Brady and Bill Belichick’s Patriots.

    But this year, they were under the microscope like never before. Between Kelce’s headline-grabbing relationship with Taylor Swift and Mahomes’ increasing frustration with the offense’s struggles, the stage was seemingly set for the best team of the past five years to melt down.

    It looked like this may not be the Chiefs’ season and they would crack under the pressure to keep their success going. It turns out, the playoffs removed all of that pressure.

    While much was said of the struggling Chiefs offense this season, the emergence of a truly dominant defense flew under the radar.

    That defense has held Kansas City’s playoff opponents to a combined 41 points in three games. Mahomes and Kelce returned to their typical playoff form and have willed the offense to victories, along with running back Isaiah Pacheco, who has had a rushing touchdown in all three games.

    The Niners’ quest for the sixth Super Bowl in franchise history has led them to the same destination it did four seasons ago: A matchup with a Chiefs team that keeps finding new ways to break their opponent’s hearts.

    But who’s to say this time won’t be different? We’re just going to have to watch and see.

    Super Bowl LVIII is still a week away, but there’s some football on TV to watch this Sunday. The 2024 Pro Bowl Games are being held in Orlando, FL this weekend. It’s a week-long competition that culminates in today’s epic flag football game, the Sunday Pro Bowl Games Championship.

    SANTA CLARA — Maybe running backs do matter. For the Giants anyway.

    A tougher and more spirited defensive effort still couldn’t prevent the 49ers from blowing out the Giants, 30-12, at Levi’s Stadium on Thursday night.

    Saquon Barkley’s absence due to a high ankle sprain put the onus on Daniel Jones to stay with the Niners. And Brian Daboll’s offense sputtered badly without him.

    The Giants (1-2) now have been outscored 63-6 in the first half through three games. And backup Tyrod Taylor replaced Jones in the fourth quarter of a blowout for the second time in the first three games.

    “No excuses,” Daboll said. “There’s a lot of stuff we can do better in every phase.”

    The Giants were outgained 441 yards to 150. They managed 29 yards rushing. Their only touchdown came on a short field with the ball starting at the San Fran 37. And Jones and Darren Waller failed to connect on two important big play opportunities.

    Waller dropped a pass at the end of the first half with daylight to run in front of him. Jones missed Waller high and behind him early in the fourth quarter.

    And then, after a Brock Purdy 27-yard TD pass to Deebo Samuel put San Fran ahead 30-12 with 5:58 to play, Jones fittingly was intercepted by Niners safety Talanoa Hufanga with 3:35 remaining to seal the deal on a pass intended for Waller, broken up by corner Charvarius Ward.

    Waller said neither pass was a perfect ball but “I’ve gotta find a way to bring it in.”

    “Nothing I’m gonna make excuses for because it’s in my radius,” Waller said.

    Wink Martindale’s blitzes and strong play from players like linebacker Micah McFadden created some silver linings, but the Giants know the schedule doesn’t get any easier with the Seattle Seahawks, Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills on deck.

    Corner Adoree Jackson didn’t want to hear about moral victories for the defense or team, either.

    “If we did our job, we would have won the game,” Jackson said. “We play hard, with grit, with will, but if you lose it doesn’t matter. We didn’t execute, didn’t tackle and didn’t get off the field [on third down].”

    The score got away from the Giants at a slow trickle in the second half, as the defense fought and the offense floundered.

    The Giants actually scored the first points of the second half to climb back into the game after being down 13 at the half. Niners corner Shemar Jean-Charles interfered with an Eric Gray fair catch attempt on a punt return, giving Jones and the Giants offense starting field position at the 49ers’ 37-yard line.

    Waller then drew a 22-yard pass interference penalty on Niners corner Deommodore Lenoir to set up a Matt Breida 8-yard touchdown run. John Michael Schmitz, Evan Neal and Darius Slayton made strong blocks on the TD.

    It drew the Giants within 17-12 with 10 minutes left in the third quarter, although Daboll went for two and the attempt failed with a sack of Jones.

    Martindale then dialed up the blitz to send Jason Pinnock into Purdy’s face and hold the 49ers to a field goal on their next drive despite a 40-yard completion to Samuel that saw the Giants defense miss three tackles on the same play.

    That was an especially encouraging stop after an illegal contact penalty on Kayvon Thibodeaux had given the Niners a first down in the red zone and sent Daboll screaming at the refs. D.J. Davidson and Leonard Williams combined for a sack on the drive, as well. And San Francisco took a 20-12 lead with 4:08 to play in the third.

    A three and out by the Giants’ offense then gave way to another 49ers drive and Jake Moody field goal for a 23-12 Niners lead with 12:47 remaining.

    At that point, it at least felt encouraging the Giants had kept the game relatively close.

    They showed fight at the start, which was a welcome change from their first two games. But they still trailed 17-6 at halftime after being outgained 242 yards to 88 through two quarters.

    The defense held the 49ers to a field goal on the game’s opening drive. Adoree Jackson nearly intercepted Purdy, and Deonte Banks broke up a third-down pass in the red zone.

    Jones then drove the offense down the field for three points to tie it immediately, keyed by a scramble and 18-yard completion to running back Gary Brightwell. And after a defensive stop, the Giants took the game to the second quarter tied, three apiece.

    They even got a 60-yard punt from Jamie Gillan to flip field position early in the second quarter after a Nick Bosa sack of Jones pinned the Giants at their own 2 yard line and forced a three-and-out.

    Unfortunately, though, the Niners began to gain steam.

    Purdy answered by converting two 3rd and longs on a 72-yard 49ers touchdown drive: a 30-yard Samuel wide receiver screen on 3rd and 15, and a 17-yard Christian McCaffrey screen pass on 3rd and 13.

    Purdy capped the drive by hitting rookie receiver Ronnie Bell for a 9-yard TD pass to take a 10-3 lead with 7:49 to play in the second quarter. Banks was in coverage, and Oshane Ximines lined up offsides.

    Then the game broke open in the home team’s favor.

    Former Eagle Javon Hargrave beat left guard Shane Lemieux to sack Jones and force a second straight Giants three-and-out. And the 49ers drove 73 yards for a 4-yard McCaffrey touchdown to take a 17-3 lead with 1:40 left in the half.

    McCaffrey’s backup, Elijah Mitchell, racked up 33 yards on the drive. And Purdy got lucky when Jackson batted a pass to Samuel into the air, only to see Bell come down with the fluttering ball for a 15-yard gain.

    The 49ers also were aided by a horrendous roughing the passer penalty called against Williams for blasting Purdy to the ground and landing on him as he threw the ball to George Kittle for an 11-yard gain on 3rd and 12 from the 20-yard line.

    But McCaffrey galloped easily into the end zone on first and goal from the 4-yard line. And on the Giants’ final drive of the half, Waller dropped a pass with daylight in front of him. So the Giants settled for a 57-yard Graham Gano bomb, his second field goal of the half.

    Tom Brady threw another hissy fit Sunday while losing to “Mr. Irrelevant” and the host San Francisco 49ers.

    The Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback was captured in a raging tantrum by Fox Sports cameras as his team trailed 28-0 at halftime, en route to a 35-7 defeat. That leaves the Bucs (6-7) below .500.

    49ers rookie quarterback Brock Purdy, making his first NFL start, looked like an old pro in dispatching an idol. Purdy was the last pick of the 2022 NFL draft, earning the annual “Mr. Irrelevant” title.

    Brady had never lost to a quarterback making his NFL starting debut — and what made it particularly inglorious was that it happened near where Brady grew up in the Bay Area.

    The seven-time Super Bowl winner has previously lashed out at teammates and tablets in a season also dragged down by his divorce. (Despite everything, the Bucs reside in first place in the NFC South.)

    But many fans weren’t feeling so sympathetic after witnessing another Brady meltdown.
