    Charithra Chandran and Sebastian Croft want you to have fun watching their latest film. The duo are starring as best friends and potential lovers, Amelia Brown and Archie Arnold, in Prime Video’s coming-of-age romantic comedy “How To Date Billy Walsh.” Amelia and Archie roam the halls of Heathbrook Academy navigating their first experiences of love, lust and friendship breakups. Watching it feels like a blast from the past, like watching those classic rom-coms from the 2000s and early 2010s. “How To Date Billy Walsh” is quirky, light-hearted and a bit silly – all the perfect ingredients you need for a successful teen rom-com.

    For those of you who know Croft from the critically acclaimed queer drama series “Heartstopper” – playing the manipulative and toxic Ben Hope – this role is a complete change of tone and might surprise you. “Archie is just a silly character,” he says. “It’s lovely to do something different. It’s so nice to play a warm and over-the-top character after diving into something quite different and very serious with “Heartstopper”.”

    In recent years, we’ve seen a shift within British rom-coms – we are seeing a lot more diversity, something that was often missing in the 2000s and 2010s. Following on from the success of richly diverse romantic coming-of-age stories like “One Day”, “Rye Lane” and “Heartstopper”, “How To Date Billy Walsh” is another great example of inclusivity within the genre. For young people of colour and those within the LGBTQ+ community in the UK, there is so much good that comes from seeing themselves at the centre of these love stories and being desired.

    Chandran is of British South-Asian descent and has always been very vocal about the need for greater diversity. She tells POPSUGAR UK: “We actually asked our director Alex Pillai [whose credits include “Riverdale,” “Bridgerton,” and “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”] about how he chose the cast and it was always about selecting the best person for the role. However, I think if their personal identity can add to the role and make it richer, then that’s really beautiful.”

    She continues: “I think there’s something incredibly bold about having such a diverse group of individuals, both in the main cast and the supporting cast of this film, but also just making it seem really normal. This is the world that we live in today. This is how we want the world to be – and look how great it’s turned out.” Croft agrees: “It is normal! If you want to make a film like this, about what it’s like being a teenager and falling in love right now, this is the way to do it. We’re really owning diversity in this film.”

    Many of us were first introduced to Chandran as the dutiful sister Edwina Sharma in “Bridgerton” series two. This year we have watched the actress transition from ensemble character to leading lady – from “How To Date Billy Walsh” to starring in the West End in “Instructions For A Teenage Armageddon,” and Chandran is taking it all in her stride. “There’s a sense of responsibility, passion, and an aspect of leadership as well,” she says. “For a lot of the cast, this was their first credit and the experience was really new to them. Sebastian and I took it upon ourselves to make sure that not only we were having a good time and doing our best work, but making sure that everyone else felt super protected and loved.” She adds: “That is a core part of leading a show that isn’t often talked about, because it’s behind the scenes.”

    If you’re wondering if filming the rom-com was as much fun as it is to watch, the answer is a definite yes. Chandran reveals: “All the cast are super close because we shot half the time in the countryside in the north of England, we were fairly isolated so we all stayed together. It really did feel like we were boarding school together; we went on nights out and had dinner together pretty much every single day.” Croft adds: “There was a lot of mischief that went on.”

    Starring in a rom-com was a bucket list for both Croft and Chandran. She muses: “As a young actor, being in a romantic comedy is the dream. Imagine looking back at your career 20 years down the line – we actually got to do a teen rom-com together.” Pretty iconic if you ask us.

    If you haven’t started “The Traitors” yet, we’d advise getting on board ASAP, as the BBC’s reality show about betrayal, murder, and scandal has been breaking TV records. The murder mystery game show averaged an audience of 6.4million in the first seven days of season two and at the helm of its success stands the iconic Claudia Winkleman.

    While the TV presenter is famous for hosting the likes of “Strictly Come Dancing”, her Saturday BBC Radio 2 show, and appearing in those Head & Shoulders TV adverts, it’s her stint on “The Traitors” that has really cemented her celebrity status with a new audience. And a lot of that is thanks to her enviable wardrobe and signature look.

    Winkleman’s style in the show is full of British countrycore glory thanks to stylist Sinead McKeefry, made up of chunky knits, fingerless gloves, and Dr Marten boots (of course). While her style might have altered from Strictly sequins to highland tartan, her archetypal beauty look has remained constant throughout her career. Her signature “I’d-give-my-spleen-for” glossy black hair and fringe, “never neat” black eyeliner which she’s stuck to since the ’70s, and concealer lips straight from the early 2000s, all complete her look.

    Social media has gone wild over Winkleman’s statement appearance, created with the help of her makeup artist Debbie Dannell and hairdresser (and “King of Fringes”), George Northwood. Any prior trolling of her quirky style and unconventional approach has slowly turned into admiration for a woman unafraid of breaking beauty standards and sticking to what she loves. After all, in a time when social media often portrays perfection, Winkleman is the anti-hero we all need.

    Winkleman’s “unapologetic fringe” is no doubt the focus of her signature hairstyle and any snaps you find of her without it are probably from the early days of her TV career. At 21, she made the decision to cut her fringe as a way to hide her “massive forehead” (her words, not ours) and in turn, the cut skyrocketed her career.

    “When I was 21 and a virgin, I got my fringe and everything started happening,” she previously told the Daily Mail. “People ask what I am hiding with my fringe – and it’s a massive forehead that is repellent.” While we somehow doubt her self-deprecation, the fringe was a move that meant she was instantly recognisable.

    Amid the success of “The Traitors” season two, Winkleman described her fringe as “armour”, claiming the heavy style “has more weight than a tonne of bricks” and helps to achieve an effortless look. “You have to make much less effort when you have a really heavy fringe,” she told Grazia before revealing one of her “fringe icons” is The Pretenders’ Chrissy Hynde.

    While the length of her fringe is often questioned by many, Winkleman confirmed the strong, visually-impairing fringe is what she fell in love with and is just how she likes it. “It started out quite wispy and floaty, but I immediately got my hairdresser to change it for a strong, Lego-like style. Once I saw that I fell in love and haven’t been without it since,” she recalled during a chat with Good Housekeeping. “I prefer it when I can’t see out of it and have to part it like a curtain.”

    Low-maintenance Winkleman is genuinely a fan of the brand Head & Shoulders, outside of her ambassadorship. She’s praised the shampoo and conditioner – specifically the £5 Head & Shoulders Anti Dandruff Shampoo – for making her locks “shiner than a unicorn” and even pulls some inspiration from the likes of Jennifer Lopez (we think) by adding oil to the ends, because she “feels very glamorous doing that. I feel like maybe J-Lo would do that.”

    She’s quick to point out that hair is her “thing”, and is usually the one element of her look that she isn’t concerned about. But, during the height of the UK lockdown, she thanked her hairstylist for being on Zoom speed-dial to help her out.

    Writing for Grazia in 2020, Winkleman opened up about her fondness of hairdressers, writing: “I have quite an emotional attachment to hairdressers because I know how amazing they can make me feel. For me, hairdressers just ruled.”

    A commitment to having a bronzed glow might sound like nothing new, but Winkleman favours the orange look above all else, detailing her extreme previous attempts to achieve the dramatic look. She once told Graham Norton on his chat show that she got rid of her bed entirely while she was studying History of Art at Cambridge University, and hired a sunbed instead. “It was super cosy, and I was fluorescent! I love being orange,” she joked.

    But musing on her sunbed use, Winkleman acknowledged that it wasn’t the safest option and avoids them now, telling Emma Barnett on Radio Four’s Woman’s Hour: “It was so unhealthy when I think back now, my body no longer recognises the actual sun.”

    Winkleman even took DIY to a new level, using kitchen products like Bisto gravy granules and old tea bags to achieve her tan when on a student budget, and while we’re sure this might be an exaggeration, it’s clear she’s dedicated to getting her deep tan one way or another. A more conventional product she reaches for now is Dr Dennis Gross’ Alpha Beta Glow Pad Intense Glow, which she gushed over during an interview with SheerLuxe.

    Her tan removal methods have been shunned by her husband Kris Thykier, however, admitting that her usual routine of using “table salt and a scourer” to scrub it off “isn’t good for foreplay.”

    Aside from the fringe and the turtlenecks, Claudia Winkleman cosplayers know that her black eyeliner is a must. Whether you’re watching her chatting on Strictly, hunting for traitors, or storming the red carpet, Winkleman will undoubtedly be wearing her slightly smudged eye look, lining the entire eye with Lord & Berry’s Silk Kajal Kohl eyeliner. There have been times when the smudge may have been a little OTT, but Winkleman’s love of imperfection makes this all the more celebratory.

    Her favourite products have been tried and tested over the span of 24 years, too, and she rarely deviates if she finds something she likes, she told the Daily Express.

    “I like Lord & Berry, I like Rimmel, I love No7 black eyeliner. I will just use anything dark and I’ll ram it on my face,” she said. She revealed that you might find MAC’s eyeshadow pot in her makeup bag in a shade that’s “a bit like, has she been out for four days, is she drunk? Yeah, put it on, both sides.”

    Winkleman shared her go-to colour palette with SheerLuxe as “black, white, and orange,” pointing to her eyes for black, her face for orange, and her lips for white, indicating that she prefers a pale lip choice to complete her deep tan and dark eyes combination. She has boasted about her favourite MAC lipstick more than a few times (Fleshpot which has since been discontinued, FYI), but she is arguably a key player in the concealer lips trend which proved popular in the early 2000s and has slowly made its way back into recent beauty trends. There is also Charlotte Tilbury’s Hot Lips List Kim in her makeup bag for what she calls “the perfect blend between nude and pale pink,” according to Grazia.

    Lipcare is also high on Winkleman’s beauty priorities and, despite being picky (and rightfully so) about which she prefers, a lip salve is always nearby. She boasted about Glossier’s Coconut Balm Dotcom to Irish News, saying that it’s “like being on holiday”, whereas Carmex is “too much of an attack.”

    The government announced on 21 Dec. that British Sign Language (BSL) will be taught as a GCSE from September 2025, marking a milestone moment for the deaf community after years of campaigning. The qualification will include around 1,000 signs and be open to all pupils, according to the BBC, and is a move that follows BSL becoming an official language in England, Scotland, and Wales last year.

    And the news is being celebrated up and down the country, with “Love Island”‘s first deaf Islander, Tasha Ghouri, praising the “step in the right direction.” Ghouri raised awareness of the deaf community when she appeared on the 2022 summer series, with her cochlear ear plant hailed as her “superpower”. Despite receiving a disappointing amount of ableist abuse while on the reality TV show, she came fourth with boyfriend Andrew Le Page, and has since gone on to start a podcast, “Superpowers With Tasha”, focused on empowering people through their differences.

    “It’s so important to have inclusivity in schools. Accessibility is something I massively stand for and It’s amazing that BSL is now becoming a GCSE course,” Ghouri tells POPSUGAR. “It’s incredible that students will now have the opportunity to learn the foundations of BSL, the history, how it was formed and it’s such a beautiful language to learn.”

    There are currently around 12 million people living with hearing loss in the UK, according to Hear4U, while it is estimated that just over 150,000 use BSL as their preferred language, including both deaf and hearing people who may have learnt it, per Sign Solutions. Introducing a GCSE in BSL will only help to open up the world for more people to communicate and connect.

    “What a day,” Ghouri added on her Instagram. “It’s amazing now students have the opportunity to learn BSL, something I really wish I had when I was at school. I really advise to take this course – one day in your life you will need it.”

    In 2021, there was a surge in people interested in learning BSL after Rose Ayling-Ellis won “Strictly Come Dancing” and wowed the nation with that silent dancing moment. The British Sign Language Courses website told ITV News they had seen a 2,488 percent increase in signups shortly after the show aired. And earlier this year, dating app Tinder teamed up with deaf twin sisters, Hermon and Heroda, to create a visual series teaching users how to flirt in BSL. But there was still a stigma around the deaf community, leaving many behind. Thankfully, due to tireless campaigning from charities, families, and students including 17-year-old, Daniel Jillings, who has campaigned for the qualification since the age of 12, communication will only continue to grow as we move towards a more inclusive society. Now that’s the good news we needed as we head into the Christmas break, right?

    Mary Earps, goalkeeper for England’s Lionesses and Manchester United, was named the BBC Sports Personality of the Year for 2023, becoming the third woman in succession to bag the coveted award. Earps, who was part of the World Cup squad this summer and won the Golden Glove for best goalkeeper of the tournament, said when she collected the award: “It feels pretty great off the back of a couple of really big years and 2023 has been wild in ways I couldn’t expect . . . I’m really, really grateful.”

    And a wild couple of years it has been. The Lionesses have undoubtedly put the spotlight on women’s football after years of it being pushed aside for the men’s game, and as Earps follows 2022’s Lioness winner, Beth Mead, in the public vote, it surely proves that women’s football is growing in popularity. “The Lionesses winning #SPOTY two years on the bounce. Making up for the past and paving the way for the future. Well done #MaryEarps,” tweeted one fan on X, formerly Twitter. “MY HERO!!!!!! SPOTY 2023 WINNER MARY EARPS,” wrote another.

    However, as has become par for the course on social media, there was also an influx of negativity following the SPOTY announcement. And in a move that will shock you as much as Mariah Carey being played at your Christmas party, the negativity stemmed predominantly from men. “Mary Earps is, at best, a Conference level goalkeeper. To win SPOTY illustrates the nonsense this has become and the woke state of our country. Make this the last one ffs, it’s utterly pointless now,” wrote one X user. If a woman winning a deserved award is “woke”, then let’s shout it louder so more can hear, the award is voted for by the public. So sorry pal, but you’re in the minority.

    Piers Morgan, of course, waded into the argument, too. “Trying to get my head around two of England’s women footballers winning BBC SPOTY in successive years… while male sporting superstars with great personalities like Rory McIlroy, Frankie Dettori & Ronnie O’Sullivan have never won it,” he posted. Because maybe, just maybe, there are women sporting superstars with great personalities, too?! Crazy, huh?

    Let’s remind ourselves of just some of the reasons Earps won. The Lionesses epic win of the Euros in 2022 saw them inspire a generation with children all over the country now seeing what playing football could achieve. And Earps was thrust into widespread notoriety when she jumped on the table during manager Sarina Wiegman’s press conference chanting the lyrics to “Three Lions (Football’s Coming Home)” with the rest of the squad.

    Soon after, the Lionesses proved they were not only players who inspired on the pitch, but off it too. The squad penned a powerful letter to the government calling on those in power to give equal access to football in PE for both boys and girls.

    At this summer’s World Cup, where the Lionesses narrowly missed out on lifting the trophy after losing to Spain in the final, saw Earps reach viral fame. After saving a penalty by Spain’s Jennifer Hermoso, she was caught on camera shouting “f*** off” in a moment of relief. Fans immediately praised her emphatic reaction and commitment, showing that women are just as passionate and competitive as their male counterparts who are often celebrated for such emotional reactions.

    Earps showed more of her metal when she took on sportswear giants, Nike, earlier in 2023 – and won. A feat not many can say they have achieved. Before the World Cup, Earps criticised the brand for not making replica Lioness goalkeeper shirts, declaring it “hugely hurtful”. Nike released a statement, explaining it understood the desire for the replica shirts and would look into them for future tournaments. To which, Earps responded: “@Nike is this your version of an apology/taking accountability/a powerful statement of intent?”

    This sparked a wave of support, and forced Nike to u-turn on its decision. And the shirt sold out in minutes. “I was really ‘umm-ing and ah-ing’ whether to use my voice and to speak on it or not – I thought I was just speaking for a niche of goalkeepers, but it turned out to be support from a group of much wider group of people. I think from that, collectively, we’ve really changed the world, so thank you to everyone,” Earps told Sky News.

    As Earps’ triumph makes a mark in history as the third woman to win the SPOTY in a row, following Mead and Emma Raducanu in 2021, it’s a landmark moment for women’s sports. Not since the 1960s has this happened, and it shows how they are inspiring the nation with pride, determination, and a moral backbone. Earps, who was dropped from the Lionesses in 2019 and considered hanging up her international boots, added per The Guardian: “I think what I’ve learned over the last couple of years is you’ve got to show a lot of resilience in life, a lot of character. It’s never easy. We all go through hard times. And in whatever walk of life we’re in, I think football is a vehicle, and we can all change the world in some small way. So that’s kind of what I’m trying to do.” What a woman.

    “It’s several-pinch-me moments. When I was growing up, Ann Summers was one of the first places that I would save up my money and buy for special occasions,” Mariam adds. “My younger self would be screaming – she’d also be like, ‘yes I knew it, I knew you were meant to do this, and this is just the beginning, don’t forget it and just keep going’.”

    They both found success on Youtube and now boast a combined following of over two million across all social platforms, Adeola, 29, and Mariam, 28, are proof that if you back yourself, anything can happen. “I love a lot of people’s work like Maya Jama and Amelia Dimoldenberg. I’m not sure if this is main character syndrome to be like ‘I inspire myself’, but I do think it’s important to believe in yourself and know what you’re capable of doing,” says Mariam.

    Their positivity is undoubtedly infectious, but that’s not to say they don’t have the odd wobble, too. “There’s been times when I’ve wanted to give up. But at the same time, you can’t let that demotivate you. Don’t let that take away your confidence to try something else,” Adeola says.

    With their natural banter and magnetic bond, you’d be forgiven for thinking their friendship goes way back, but really their closeness grew more recently. “We’ve known each other for a while, but the past three years is when we started getting really close and actively started to learn about each other and open up,” Mariam says. “If I’m stressed out I know Adeola will understand and vice versa. We have periods where we will talk every single day for hours and then we have times where we don’t talk for a couple of days and we’ll have a good catch up.”

    While an innate sense of confidence is key, surrounding yourself with those who build you up is essential, too. And that’s what the pair have found in each other. “Having someone you can talk to, that understands what you are going through, and makes you feel like ‘ok, I’m not crazy’, makes a difference and it’s why I appreciate Maz [Mariam] a lot,” Adeola tells us.

    With social media at the centre of their careers, it’s inevitable they’ve faced negativity on the platforms, but have both found coping mechanisms to help manage it. “I deactivated Twitter [now X] before I went on holiday. Sometimes it’s a lot and I think it’s important to have breaks. Your mental health and what you consume is important, so I’ll block certain words, mute things, and just switch off,” says Mariam. “I’ll put my phone on ‘do not disturb’,” says Adeola.

    “[W]hen I do wear a sexy set, I just feel like I can perform. It’s an ego boost and you just feel so sexy.”

    While their outlook on life is in sync, so is their style. “We’ll often see each other and we are wearing the exact same thing or something really similar,” Adeola says, who even inspired Mariam with her underwear, too. “Adeola is someone that always matches, as it makes you feel confident every day when you wear something that’s sexy – and you never know what’s going to happen either!” Mariam teases. “I’m usually a thong girl, but when I do wear a sexy set, I just feel like I can perform. It’s an ego boost and you just feel so sexy.”

    As they both plan to head home to Nigeria for Christmas and New Year, they’ll be taking their favourite party season lingerie with them. “My favourite is the emerald two-piece corset, I love anything with a suspender belt,” Mariam says. For Adeola, “the Euphoria body with the chain is one of my favourites. It just gives dominance.” Suddenly, we feel the need to up our underwear game . . .

    Only a decade ago, Rita Ora rose to fame with her feature on DJ Fresh’s single “Hot Right Now.” Initially a singer/songwriter, the now-32-year-old has successfully expanded into other industries, including TV and film, playing critical roles on “The X Factor” and “Fifty Shades of Grey.” Ora has also dabbled in the fashion world, both as host of “America’s Next Top Model” and collaborator with Adidas (2014), Giuseppe Zanotti (2018), and Primark (2023), launching a 169-piece international collection with the UK retailer. This should come as no surprise, being that her style has always been something to watch.

    The “Don’t Think Twice” artist has developed an affinity for sultry silhouettes, from her plunging Barbara Casasola dress for the 2014 MTV Movie Awards to her Tom Ford sheer lace wedding gown that she wore to marry husband Taika Waititi in 2022. And while some of today’s biggest trends include fishnet dresses and cutout swimwear, Ora has been rocking them long before they resurfaced. The early days of her career were marked by ensembles as simple as the little black slip she wore to a Paper Magazine party to something edgier, like the all-leather Jean Paul Gaultier getup she wore for a visit to Sirus XM Studios. In 2016, Ora most memorably turned heads at the annual Met Gala in her most groundbreaking dress: a silver feathered gown with hip cutouts by Vera Wang.

    The British songstress continues to showcase her sartorial diversity by donning the most boundary-pushing outfits for performances, too. She recently embraced the naked aesthetic in a see-through caped catsuit while taking the stage at the 2023 Invictus Games. Of course, it’s not the first time she’s gone sheer, having rocked a lacy number by Alaïa during Paris Haute Couture Week, a Jean Paul Gaultier illusion skirt set, and a liquid latex dress in June.

    This was such a good year for animation. Last year it truly boiled down to “Encanto vs. Mitchells”, but the field is wide open, so let’s run it down with the help of Vareity!

    With Disney/Pixar, we have Turning Red, a critical darling. Not commercial, because Disney didn’t give it a wide release….and Lightyear and Strange World, both of which did receive wide releases, flopped, and are non-entities in this race. Turning Red, which marks the first from Pixar to be solely directed by a woman, has received critical acclaim for Shi’s depictions of female friendships and the mother-daughter relationship.

    OP Note: TR is still probably my favorite film of the year.

    Netflix has quite a lot, including The Sea Beast, their most successful animated film to date. There’s also My Father’s Dragon, the latest from Cartoon Saloon, which hit the platform with a mild splash. Of course, there’s Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, which is almost guaranteed to place in the nominations.

    The article does not, however, mention Henry Selick’s Wendell and Wild.

    OP Note: Sea Beast was fine enough, and GDT’s Pinocchio was really cool. Nice to see a multitude of stop motion available, sad W&W isn’t getting more attention.

    GKIDS missed a nomination last year with Belle (tip: the soundtrack is amazing), but with Inu-Oh already being nominated for a Golden Globe, maybe they can take it all the way (and give us a US release, y/y?).

    Did you, like most people, forget Dreamworks Animation had not one, but two films this year? The Bad Guys had a fairly slow rollout worldwide with it’s soft, almost Spider-verse-esque style for a bunch of criminals. It sadly seems to have sunk out of the public conciousness. Meanwhile, the sixth entry into the Shrek franchise, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, may be 11 years too late, but it was worth the wait, with very positive reviews, and a bombastic artstyle and story that stops just short of saying memento mori.

    OP Note: Ok, maybe Puss in Boots is my favorite this year?

    Welcome to the animation side, A24, and welcome Marcel The Shell With Shoes On. I didn’t like it. But I’m glad another stop motion/live action hybrid is making the rounds, and is winning a lot of smaller circuits!
