    JOHANNESBURG – Street vendors selling goods along Lillian Ngoyi Street in the Johannesburg CBD said the explosion that rocked the inner city continued to impact their livelihoods.

    Last month, a methane gas explosion on the street destroyed a long stretch of road, leading to the closure of many streets that intersect with Lillian Ngoyi.

    While it has been declared safe, and things have returned to normal somewhat, it’s not business as usual for many vendors.

    Three weeks after the fatal blast, street vendors sit and hope there will be enough customers in a day to make money to pay for the storage of their goods.

    A vendor who sells plates of food on the road said since she reopened two weeks ago, business has been extremely slow.

    She said she starts operating at seven in the morning but barely makes enough by the time she closes.

    JOHANNESBURG – The City of Joburg said repairing damage caused by the explosion on Lillian Ngoyi Street (formerly Bree Street) will cost an estimated R178 million.

    City officials provided an update on the latest findings into the explosion.

    The city said since the incident, R4 million had already been spent on the affected area.

    As the city continues to investigate the source of the methane gas – which it said led to the explosion – it said the repairs should begin soon.

    City manager Floyd Brink said the estimated cost of repairs was likely to increase when work is carried out in the area.

    He said the pipelines would be completely redesigned to prevent future explosions on the route.

    Brink said the city had not yet established how long it would take to complete the repairs.

    “We can guarantee you it will not be 18 months. We’ve got a clear interest as a city to show what we can do in a short space of time.”

    JOHANNESBURG – Families left destitute after a gas explosion in the Johannesburg CBD have received a much-needed lifeline.

    Primedia Broadcasting’s 947 and 702 have teamed up with one of the country’s major grocery chains, Pick n Pay, to offer support to families devastated by the Bree Street blast.

    The explosion took place on 19 July, and left more than 40 people injured, and one dead.

    JOHANNESBURG – Joburg City management said it was still unclear what triggered a deadly underground gas explosion in the city centre exactly a week ago.

    City manager, Floyd Brink, gave an update on Wednesday on the progress of investigations.

    One person died and dozens were injured when the blast ripped through the city’s streets during afternoon peak traffic.

    Brink said the city was now waiting for laboratory results to identify the ignited gas type.

    “It becomes very difficult to link that to any form or cause. The investigations are ongoing, we should be getting a report. I have also spoken that we have sent through samples to the laboratories for testing, so we are waiting for those particular results so that we start to narrow down and start to pinpoint the issue.”

    He said it was a relief that power cables on the distressed road had been restored quickly.

    JOHANNESBURG – Some residents in the Johannesburg CBD have accused property owners in the area of failing to supply alternative means of power to buildings that have been without electricity.

    Some parts of downtown Joburg were plunged into darkness on Wednesday after a suspected gas leak explosion on Bree Street, that left one dead, injuring at least 45 others.

    The City has said it would restore power on Monday.

    JOHANNESBURG – Some businesses reopened in the Johannesburg CBD on Saturday, following a major explosion on Bree Street earlier this week.

    One person died and at least 40 people were injured as a result.

    The area of the explosion was cordoned off, with some buildings in the area without water and electricity since the blast.

    However, after two days of no business for some shop owners, one says he is very glad to be resuming operations again, and hopes to make up for lost time.
