  • Tequilas Burbank Launches 9th Annual Cancer Fundraiser in Collaboration with Community Advocate Ashley Erikson

    Ashley Erikson and Patricia Rivera.

Tequilas Burbank has once again opened its doors, and its heart, to the community with the launch of its 9th annual cancer fundraiser, running from September 15 through October 23. In partnership with local community advocate Ashley Erikson, the beloved family-owned restaurant is dedicating six weeks to raising funds for the Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Centers Genetics and Genomics Department, part of the Providence St. Joseph Foundation in Burbank.

This cause is deeply personal for Tequilas owner, Patricia Rivera, who lost her mother at a young age to ovarian cancer. She has also lost sisters to the disease, which runs dominantly in her family. For Erikson, the fight against cancer is also close to home. She carries the BRCA2 gene mutation, which put her risk of developing breast cancer as high as 82%. Over the past several years, she has undergone multiple preventative procedures, lowering her risk to just 6%. Together, Rivera and Erikson have become powerful voices in raising awareness and funds for cancer research and care in Burbank.

“September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, and October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so this fundraiser really hits home for both of us,” said Erikson. “It’s about honoring our loved ones, protecting future generations, and making a tangible impact right here in Burbank.”

Instead of the traditional sit-down dinner fundraisers of years past, Tequilas and Erikson are making this year’s events more accessible to the community, offering multiple ways for guests to get involved:

The Pink Ribbon, Toast To A Cure, and The Fighter, now available at Tequilas Burbank through October 23.
    • Specialty Drinks for a Cause: From now through October 23, Tequilas has added three new drinks to its menu, with 50% of sales donated to the cancer center:
      • The Pink Ribbon: JAJA tequila, watermelon pucker, sweet & sour, rimmed with ocean blue salt.
      • The Fighter: Teremana tequila, blue curaçao, sweet & sour, rimmed with Himalayan pink salt.
      • Toast to a Cure: A non-alcoholic pink and teal piña colada mocktail rimmed with rainbow sugar.
    • Merchandise with Meaning: Cancer awareness wristbands ($5) and pink & teal ribbon necklaces ($15) are available for purchase, with 100% of sales benefiting the center.
    • Dine-In Fundraiser Days: On Wednesday, September 24 and Thursday, October 23, guests can dine in all day and Tequilas will donate 25% of all regular-priced sales to the cause. (Excludes third-party delivery, specials not available. Mention the fundraiser to your server to ensure it’s reflected on your receipt.)
During these dine-in nights, from 5–9 PM, representatives from Providence St. Joseph will be on-site providing resources. Guests can also enjoy cancer ribbon face painting, and an open mic will be available for community members to share stories of why they support cancer awareness. On October 23, the pink Burbank Police patrol car, specially wrapped for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, will also be on display for photos in the back parking lot. Reservations suggested bur not necessary.
    • Curtain Sanctuary Tribute: Returning again this year is Tequilas’ annual cancer curtain sanctuary on the restaurant’s patio. Guests are invited to bring a photo (no larger than 5×7) of their loved ones who have battled cancer and pin it to the curtain in their honor. You can also text your photo to 818-516-9260 and Patricia will print and pin it for you.
Merchandise for sale at Tequilas Burbank

Over the past several years, Tequilas and Erikson have raised $40,000 for the Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center. This year, their goal is to raise $15,000, bringing their grand total to $55,000. For those who can’t attend in person, direct donations can also be made online at: Providence St. Joseph Foundation Fundraiser Link.

“We’ve seen firsthand how much this community rallies together,” said Rivera. “This fundraiser is about more than just raising money, it’s about giving people a chance to remember, to fight, and to hope.”

Tequilas Burbank is located at 4310 W Magnolia Blvd, Burbank. For more information, visit them on Instagram at @tequilasburbank or stop by during the fundraiser period to participate.

  • Omaha-Based Healthcare Company Fusion Gathers Employees for Project Pink’d Fundraiser

In honor of breast cancer awareness month, Fusion held a company outing and fundraiser last month, raising more than $20,000 for breast cancer support and research. The beneficiary was Project Pink’d, an organization that supports those diagnosed with breast cancer in several ways, including financially, emotionally, and physically.

“Fusion came together and did what we do best that day,” said Amber Barna, Chief Clinical Officer and breast cancer survivor. “I am so proud to be part of this company because of the way our team commits to supporting those around us. The advancements from research and generous donations are saving lives.”

Barna shared her story with the company the day before the fundraiser, telling all employees regardless of their gender how important it is to get regular screenings and to support organizations funding cancer research, like Project Pink’d.

“When I started treatment in 2009, my doctor told me that my attitude would determine how I felt, and I really didn’t believe him until one day I just felt horrible. I got labs done and was convinced they were going to show that something was off, but I was wrong. The labs looked good, and I realized the only thing that was off was my attitude,” said Barna. “I try to carry that into the rest of my life and my mentoring of other professionals, telling them that no matter the circumstance, your attitude plays a huge role in the outcome.” You can learn more about Project Pink’d and the organization’s mission by visiting projectpinkd.org.

    About Fusion:

  • Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Dr. Meegan Gruber Empowers Women Through Education, Prevention, and Hope

Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Dr. Meegan Gruber Empowers Women Through Education, Prevention, and Hope

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to shine a spotlight on one of the most pervasive and challenging health issues facing women today. As the country marks this month of awareness and advocacy, Dr. Meegan Gruber, a board-certified plastic surgeon and renowned expert in breast reconstructive surgery, is committed to empowering women with the knowledge they need to face breast cancer head-on. From early detection and treatment to life after recovery, Dr. Gruber aims to provide both education and hope for those affected by this life-altering disease.

The Fearful Reality of Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide. In the United States alone, approximately one in eight women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer during their lifetime. The fear of receiving such a diagnosis can be overwhelming, and for many, it’s a reminder of the uncertainties that come with such a life-changing condition.

“Breast cancer is a profound emotional and physical battle,” Dr. Gruber said. “The worry isn’t just about survival—it’s also about how the disease and its treatments will affect your identity, your body, and your confidence. Many women grapple with the fear of losing their breasts, which can be tied to their sense of femininity.”

While early detection is key, many women avoid regular screenings due to fear of the results. Mammograms, self-examinations, and awareness of personal risk factors are essential steps that cannot be overlooked. Though the journey can be overwhelming, taking control of your health is the most empowering action you can take.

    Hope and Empowerment Through Education

While the fear surrounding breast cancer is undeniable, there is also hope—thanks to modern medical advancements, survival rates continue to rise. Early-stage breast cancer, when detected and treated promptly, has a nearly 100% five-year survival rate. Treatments have become more targeted and less invasive, leading to better outcomes and improved quality of life post-treatment.

Dr. Gruber, who has treated many breast cancer survivors, highlights the importance of patient education in navigating breast cancer. “Knowledge is power. Understanding your options, both in terms of medical treatment and breast augmentation or reconstructive surgery, can alleviate fear and restore a sense of control during a difficult time. I work closely with patients to develop personalized surgical plans that focus not just on physical recovery but also on emotional healing,” she said.

For those facing a breast cancer diagnosis, reconstructive surgery offers an opportunity to rebuild confidence. Whether opting for breast-conserving surgery or mastectomy with reconstruction, the options available today are more advanced than ever, allowing for breast augmentation and natural-looking results.

A Bright Future: Stories of Survival and Strength

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is not only a time to reflect on the hardships of the disease but also a time to celebrate the survivors who inspire us with their resilience. One of Dr. Gruber’s patients, Jane (a pseudonym to protect her privacy), is a breast cancer survivor who underwent breast reconstruction after a mastectomy. Jane’s story is one of hope, strength, and joy.

“I never imagined I could feel like myself again after cancer,” Jane said. “Dr. Gruber not only gave me back my body, but she also gave me back my confidence. The reconstructive process helped me feel whole again, and I’m forever grateful for her care and skill.”

October serves as a reminder that breast cancer doesn’t define a person. Survivors like Jane embody the strength and courage that women across the world are capable of, and with ongoing research and awareness, the future for breast cancer patients continues to improve.

Take Action: Early Detection and Support

Dr. Gruber encourages all women to take charge of their breast health by scheduling regular mammograms and practicing self-exams. For those already facing breast cancer, know that you are not alone. Whether you need information, treatment options, or awake surgery, Dr. Gruber and her team are here to guide you through every step of your journey.

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, let us unite in education, early detection, and support to ensure that more women survive, thrive, and feel empowered after breast cancer.

Edge Electronics Raises Over $30,000 for Breast Cancer Education and Awareness Programs Through the Huntington Breast Cancer Action Coalition (HBCAC)

    Press Release

    updated: Oct 16, 2018

In honor of October being Breast Cancer Awareness month, Edge Electronics, Inc. announces that it has raised over $30,000 at their Fourteenth Annual Charity Golf Outing benefiting the Huntington Breast Cancer Coalition (HBCAC).

The event included a breakfast, golf scramble, barbecue lunch sponsored by Marsicovetere & Colavecchio & Co., LLC and People’s United Bank, cocktail hour, and dinner with awards and raffles.

We are thankful for the support from our sponsors, suppliers, and representatives that contribute to our annual cause…

    Adrienne Giannone, President & CEO

Golfers were split into foursomes and sent onto the course after a review of the rules. Guests were encouraged to participate in various activities along the course, including a hole-in-one challenge to win a 2-year lease on a new Mercedes. This year’s fall-themed “Beat the Beet” putting challenge, sponsored by Applied Concepts, Inc., starred HeartBeet Farms of Centereach, New York. Heartbeet Farms is a local one-acre, farm focused on delivering healthy, organic foods and food education to families on Long Island.

Following a day of golf, the teams made their way to a delightful cocktail hour sponsored by Digital View and Hinck Electrical Contractor, Inc., featuring an open bar, hors d’oeuvres, and a visit from HeartBeet Farm’s mobile farm stand.

Dinner included over 130 guests and just as many raffle prizes. The night kicked off with the announcement of the golf awards, followed by a thank you speech by Adrienne Giannone, president and CEO of Edge Electronics, a touching tribute to a recent breast cancer survivor and event volunteer, and an introduction to the HBCAC.

“This was our fourteenth year hosting the golf outing and every year we continue to accomplish our fundraising goals,” says Adrienne Giannone. “We are thankful for the support from our sponsors, suppliers, and representatives that contribute to our annual cause, and especially to Debbie O’Rourke and the Eventide Group for always going above and beyond to make our event a huge success.”

Edge Electronics is proud to have worked with and supported the HBCAC’s mission of bringing breast cancer education and awareness to the community.
