Ian strengthens to hurricane again after pummeling Florida, now headed for Carolinas, Georgia

Gov. Ron DeSantis says Hurricane Ian is 500-year event, Lee and Charlotte counties are off the grid

Speaking in a Thursday morning media briefing, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said that first responders had descended on southwest Florida following Hurricane Ian.

Operations are ongoing, with 28 large helicopters between the National Guard and Coast Guard performing rescue missions, and more air assets brought in as the day continues.

DeSantis said his office had also been working with hospitals overnight that have been on generator power and were in the process of evacuating health care facilities to safer locations.

The governor noted that, in addition to the more than 2.5 million power outages reported in the state, more outages were anticipated in central and northeastern Florida.

“Lee and Charlotte are basically off the grid at this point,” he explained, adding that infrastructure would likely have to be rebuilt there and that damage to the counties was “extensive.”

DeSantis said that, after interruptions in communications, 100 portable cell towers were being deployed in southwest Florida.

Furthermore, 100 engineers were on site to do bridge inspections, and he noted that there were reports of structural damages to bridges like the Sanibel Causeway and Pine Island Bascule Bridge.

DeSantis warned that the amount of water that’s been rising and will continue to rise is “basically a 500-year flood event.”

The governor said he had spoken with President Biden earlier in the morning, and that additional major disaster declarations are expected for more Florida counties.

Water is anticipated to subside in barrier islands and on the coasts, but DeSantis told reporters that standing water is likely inland for the coming days.

“Those who are in need of life support right now: Help is on the way,” he said, pointing out that efforts were first focused in the hardest hit areas.

“The impacts of this storm are historic
… But, I think we’ve never seen a flood event like this … And, it’s going to end up doing extensive damage to a lot of peoples’ homes,” DeSantis pointed out.

The governor said most school districts will be able to reopen on Friday or Monday.

Answering questions later in the news conference, DeSantis responded to a report of “hundreds” of fatalities in Lee County: “So, none of that is confirmed.”

He said that a number put out by Lee authorities was “basically an estimate” of people calling 911 and saying that water was rising in their homes.

“They may not have ended up getting through,” DeSantis said, telling the reporter that he hoped they could be rescued at this point.

He clarified that there were two unconfirmed fatalities and that they had not yet been confirmed to be related to the storm.

“I mean, our assumption is, it likely is,” DeSantis said.

2022 Midterm election news Dems and Republicans fight to control Senate, House of Representatives

    [ad_1]

An ad from gun control advocacy group Giffords PAC used footage of the Columbine High School shooting and other violent mass shootings to target GOP Senate candidate Joe O’Dea, prompting criticism.

“Here in Colorado it just keeps happening, but instead of standing up for Colorado families, MAGA Republican Joe O’Dea is standing with the gun lobby, opposing Common Sense gun safety reforms like closing loopholes and keeping guns out of the hands of criminals,” the narrator in the ad says, as brief footage of people fleeing the Columbine shooting and the Aurora movie theater shooting flash on the screen.

“Here in Colorado we felt the pain of gun violence so many times but Joe O’Dea sides with the gun lobby not us,” the ad says.

O’Dea’s campaign called the ad a “dishonest attack” that is “disgusting even for the low-life political hacks who run Joe Biden’s political operation” in a press release.

Supporters of O’Dea also came to his defense, saying his plan of “more cops and a criminal justice system getting serious about enforcing the numerous gun laws already on the books — will do more to protect Colorado than a bunch of politicians in Washington, D.C. passing another law,” according to Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Shrader.

“They’re using this tragedy without consideration of victims and survivors. It’s shameful,” said school safety advocate John Castillo, who has argued for arming school staff to prevent violent attacks.

“Joe O’Dea has a plan to protect our communities. Cut the federal bureaucracy to fund more cops and more border security,” said Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers. “Invoking images of Columbine and Aurora is a new kind of tawdry, and as Colorado has proven, more gun laws don’t stop these tragedies. More cops in our communities and schools will.”

Giffords PAC, which endorsed Democratic incumbent Sen. Michael Bennet in the Colorado Senate race, said last week that it will spend $2.5 million to run the ad on TV and online.

“Joe O’Dea’s support of the gun lobby’s ‘guns everywhere’ agenda is wrong for Colorado,” said Peter Ambler, executive director and co-founder, Giffords. “Coloradans know the consequences of gun violence all too well, and we are confident they will oppose Joe O’Dea in large part because of his refusal to keep communities safe from this public health crisis.”

“It’ll be the first time this event has been held in the Southern Hemisphere and has the potential to be the biggest event Sydney has seen since the Sydney 2000 Olympics.”

“As a city and a state, we are embracing the freedom we have earned through the hard times of the past two years.”

“The NSW Government continues to invest in world-class entertainment, hospitality and events; our goal is to be the events capital of the Asia-Pacific and supporting Sydney WorldPride 2023 helps achieve this.”

“NSW is ready to host this event and we are encouraging visitors to make the trip to enjoy the best that Sydney has to offer.”

Clover Moore, the Lord Mayor of the City of Sydney, said: “The City is proud to be a fierce ally of the rainbow community and we are delighted to welcome the world to Sydney for Pride in 2023!”

“This is a fantastic moment for Sydney. Hosting WorldPride 2023 is an affirmation of our city as a richly diverse and accepting society, open to the world and inclusive of all, and a wonderful opportunity to help our arts, tourism and hospitality sectors that were so hard hit by the Covid pandemic.”

Demetrius Matthews’ documentary celebrates a remarkable educator who changed the lives of students in Chicago’s West Side during the 1980s. Coming soon to Amazon Prime.

    Press Release

    May 10, 2022

Teachers are treasured members of society, but it is truly special educators who change the lives of their students. One such outstanding teacher is Thomas Kling, who saved dozens of students from a life of violence and poverty through the power of education, and his story is brought to life in Legacy Media’s inspiring new documentary Kling: A Teacher Who Defied The System.

Demetrius Matthew’s debut film upholds the legacy of beloved Chicago teacher Thomas Kling and his dedication to making a difference in the community. Featuring interviews with Kling himself and the very students he changed the lives of, this film is an inspiring tribute to an incredible educator and to the hard work that the teachers of America do every day — something which has been made even more apparent during the pandemic. Kling: A Teacher Who Defied The System is available soon on Amazon Prime and Tubi.

    Watch the trailer: https://youtu.be/ZZ1xZiirBW0

Premiering in October 2021 at the Twin Cities Film Festival, Kling is a moving snapshot of Chicago’s West Side in the 1980s. The film offers an authentic perspective with its historical footage and first-hand accounts of growing up in a time when the future was uncertain for children from disadvantaged families.

Demetrius Matthews describes his film as a love story; a love story between a teacher and his students.

“Education is a battle. Being a teacher is a battle,” says Matthews. “Mr. Kling risked everything to give me and so many other students a chance to attend high school and be successful in life. I honestly believe I wouldn’t be where I am today without him, and this film is incredibly important to me. It’s an honor to share Mr. Kling’s story with the world.”

    Synopsis

  • From the Coast to the Desert, Global Content Creator Inspires Travellers to Visit New South Wales

From the Coast to the Desert, Global Content Creator Inspires Travellers to Visit New South Wales

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    Apr 23, 2022

Spectacular new scenic imagery of New South Wales destinations will be shared across social platforms globally from today with the launch of a seven-part content collaboration with world renowned content creator, Eugene Tan and Destination NSW.

Produced in partnership with the NSW Government as part of the Feel New South Wales campaign, the content series takes Tan right across the state to capture the beaches of Byron Bay and Brunswick Heads on NSW’s North Coast, as well as Lord Howe Island.

In a dramatic departure from Tan’s typical coastal photo subject matter, Tan also captures the dramatic desert landscape of Outback NSW in Broken Hill.

Minister for Enterprise, Investment and Trade, Minister for Tourism and Sport and Minister for Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said the collaboration speaks to the state’s fresh new approach to marketing NSW.

“The ‘Feel New’ campaign is a key pillar of the NSW Government’s Visitor Economy Strategy 2030, which aims to make NSW the premier visitor economy of the Asia Pacific,” Mr Ayres said.

“Content and social media has never played a more important role in helping us discover our next holiday destination. Through Aquabumps, Eugene has ensured his work is eagerly anticipated and shared on social media by millions of people each week.

“His shots are powerful, emotive and distinctive. Who better to capture some of NSW’s most stunning locations and introduce prospective visitors from around the world to the incredible products and experiences our state has to offer?”

Ten destinations feature in the Feel NSW Aquabumps series, with the shoot style of the visual imagery supporting the seven feelings of the Feel New brand – joy, connection, freedom, awe, rejuvenation, belonging and adventure.

Aquabumps founder Eugene Tan said his latest NSW series was the ultimate creative brief.

“Shooting for my fine art gallery – Aquabumps has taken me to a lot of incredible destinations over the years but none are as special to me as NSW. NSW is home and where I shoot most of the time, I’m never at a loss for new places and experiences to capture in our own backyard.

“This is a magical place of contrasts, offering unique and diverse nature, coastlines and cultural experiences to everyone who visits. It was an honour to have the opportunity to do something to showcase some of this diversity.

“I hope the series inspires travellers from near and far to get out there and explore everything our state has to offer,” said Tan.

The Feel NSW Aquabumps series includes the following NSW locations and will go live each week from today until 6 June.

    • NSW North Coast: Byron Bay, Brunswick Heads and Tintenbar
    • NSW Outback: Broken Hill
    • NSW Snowy Mountains
    • Hawkesbury River
    • NSW Mid North Coast: Seal Rocks, Sandbar Beach
    • Lord Howe Island
    • Sydney including Vivid Sydney

When the unlikely heir to a Mexican fast food franchise, Joel (Santino Fontana) reluctantly accepts a mission to find new ideas for their menu in New Mexico, he find himself in a small, dusty town where foodies travel from all over to salivate over the culinary treats of a local, authentic, and feisty female chef, Javiera (Dania Ramirez). Opposites attract in this sweet and romantic story about food, family, and love.

Director Jay Silverman says “When my team and I began developing Off The Menu, I was inspired by Michael Pollan’s novel The Omnivore’s Dilemma to show how huge a role that food plays in all our lives,” says director and executive producer Jay Silverman. “Joel’s family owns one of America’s largest fast-food chains, while our Chef Javiera has a farm-to-table approach to her melt-in-your-mouth-good cooking. This cultural detail was central to our story, and enabled our characters romantic journey to begin”.

Producer Bethany Cerrona says “We are very proud that the CAST was over 50% female and Hispanic, which made for a more inclusive experience and authentic story that audiences will be sure to fall in love with.”

Lise Romanoff, Managing Director/ CEO Vision Films says, “The tagline: ‘The secret ingredient is love’, says it all! Dania Ramirez not only charms her co-star Santino Fontana, the audience will be captivated as well.”

    Press Release

    updated: Sep 27, 2017

Vision Films is proud to present MURDER ON THE CAPE, based on the 2002 Cape Cod murder of Christa Worthington. Written and directed by Arthur Egeli, MURDER ON THE CAPE is a stunning and deeply human retelling of the case that shocked the nation.

The film stars Jade Harlow (Passions, The Bay), Josh Walther (Eugene O’Neill: Art as Life), Chris Lazzaro (Jersey Shore Massacre), Heather Egeli (Ghost Forest ) and Tim Misuradze (The Young and The Restless).

It struck me while I was watching this film that there was even more to the typical ‘torn from the headlines’ movie, it is a compelling murder mystery, where a real ‘who done it’ is unfolding before our eyes in the news.

Lise Romanoff, Managing Director, Vision Films

MURDER ON THE CAPE is available on Digital for an SRP $4.99 – $9.99 Rent or Buy across all platforms and to Buy on DVD for $14.95.

MURDER ON THE CAPE is based on the true story of New York fashion writer Christa Worthington, who has an affair with a married fisherman while spending a winter holiday in Cape Cod. She returns two years later with his child looking to rekindle their love. When she is found murdered, a mystery unfolds within the tight-knit community, shedding doubt on the prime suspect’s guilt.

“The heart of the story is that there were all these personal struggles that you cannot read in a book about the crime,” director Arthur Egeli says. “You don’t get to see how everything affects each other, so we produced a narrative film about the characters who all had unique perspectives.”
