Shatrughan Sinha was among the most famous actors in the 1970s, and like many well-known celebrities of that era, his private life was often featured in the media. During that time, it was widely recognized that Shatrughan and actress Reena Roy were profoundly in love, making it surprising for all when Shatrughan chose to wed Poonam Sinha in 1980. However, even after marrying, Shatrughan was unable to sever his connection with Reena, who continued to believe that he would marry her as well. Around this period, Dharmendra wed his longtime partner Hema Malini, while still being married to his first wife, Prakash Kaur. In his biography, Anything But Khamosh, Shatrughan reflected on the period when he had not ended his relationship with Reena, yet was already wed to Poonam. He furthermore revealed that when Poonam was eight months pregnant, his elder brother Ram commanded him to wed Reena, which left him stunned.

Shatrughan remembered this as a challenging time in his life since “extracting himself from an emotional involvement elsewhere was requiring time.” He recalled that his wife “used to cry a lot” during this period, but he recognized that it required time since “it was a question of a commitment to the other party also.” Shatrughan mentioned that during outings with Reena, she would pose questions that placed him in a tough position. “You’ve set up your home. So was I a toy to be used and cast away?” she would inquire. He mentioned, “I have to tell every man that an extra-marital situation puts you on a perpetual guilt trip. When you are at home, you feel guilty about neglecting the other woman. When you are with her, you feel guilty about your wife.”

During this stage, Shatrughan and Reena kept collaborating. In 1983, Shatrughan was instructed by his elder brother Ram to wed Reena. Poonam was expecting twins, Luv and Kush, at this moment. Shatrughan remembered this incident in the biography and mentioned that his brother summoned him to Reena’s residence, and when he arrived, he “asked me point-blank to marry her, right there, right then.” Ram “had given his word to Reena,” and Shatrughan was astonished when he witnessed the events unfolding. Ram was steadfast and warned Shatrughan that if he did not obey his commands, he would expose his affair to everyone.
