Mark Tasche was so proud that his grandsons learned to fish like him, but there was one more lesson he wishes they would’ve taken to heart.

“Your life jacket — when you’re in a situation that’s even halfway dangerous — put it on,” the 66-year-old Tasche told WCCO News. “My grandsons both should’ve learned from me. They should’ve learned from my example.”

Neither of Tasche’s grandsons, Tyler and Tristan, were wearing life jackets on Tuesday when their fishing boat capsized on the Mississippi River. Tyler, 28, was located unresponsive and died, according to the Wright County Sheriff’s Office. Tristan, 18, was able to make it to shore, along with his grandfather.

“I don’t know that I’ll ever go on a boat again,” Tasche lamented. “I don’t know that I’ll fish again. I would rather Tyler would’ve survived. If I could change places with him laying on that cold slab like he is now getting cremated like he is now. I would do that.”

The sheriff’s office says Xcel Energy employees, the Monticello Fire Department, the Sherburne County Sheriff’s Office, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the Minnesota State Patrol assisted in the recovery efforts.

Tyler Tasche is also survived by his wife and four children. A fundraiser has been set up to support the family.

“It’s a huge and immense void,” Tasche added. “Everybody liked Tyler. He helped everyone with everything.”

  • Boat full of decomposing corpses spotted by fishermen off Brazil coast

Bogota, Colombia — A small boat full of decomposing corpses was spotted by fishermen off Brazil’s northeastern coast on Saturday, according to local news reports. Brazil’s Attorney General’s office said in a statement that it had dispatched a forensics team to the area to determine where the bodies and the boat came from.

“Some reports say there could be up to 20 corpses” in the boat, the Attorney General’s office said in a statement. The office announced it was opening a criminal and a civil investigation into the incident.

The boat was floating off the coast of the state of Para in a remote location about 185 miles from the state capital Belem.

It wasn’t the first time that vessels carrying dead bodies were spotted by fishermen in the western side of the Atlantic Ocean. In 2021, at least seven boats full of corpses washed up in Brazil and the Eastern Caribbean.

Boots are placed on the ground by police officers as they inspect a boat in which 15 Malians were found dead and adrift in the Atlantic Ocean, in an Aug. 20, 2020 file photo taken on Gran Canaria island, Spain.

Investigations by The Associated Press and local authorities determined that some of these boats carried the corpses of African migrants who were trying to make it to the Canary Islands, but had missed their target and had drifted for weeks in the Atlantic Ocean.

    CBS News Miami

Around 3:15 p.m., over 30 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel, including two fireboats and an air rescue unit — alongside the City of Miami Fire, the Florida Wildlife Commission and the U.S. Coast Guard — responded to reports of a boat collision in Fisherman’s Channel near Dodge Island.

According to the Coast Guard, the two watercraft involved were a tour boat and a recreation vessel.

According to MDFR, the response was upgraded due to the number of people involved and the need for additional manpower.

MDFR told CBS News Miami that a total of 13 people were transported by responding agencies to a local hospital, while other patients on the scene were evaluated and released.
