  • Horror Comic ‘Something Is Killing the Children’ Getting Movie and Series Adaptations in Blumhouse Deal (Exclusive)

    [ad_1]

You can’t keep a good monster hunter down.

Coming on top of a multi-company bidding war, Blumhouse, the prolific horror-centric banner behind Black Phone 2 and the upcoming Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, has snagged the rights to Something Is Killing the Children, the popular Boom! Studios comic by James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera.

The title has enjoyed Hollywood’s attention since it debuted in 2019 and has previously been in development as a live-action series. Blumhouse plans on actually doing both big-screen and small-screen takes. It will develop the franchise simultaneously as a live-action feature film and as an adult animated television series, with the TV adaptation to be shepherded by Tynion.

For this pickup, Lionsgate circled the rights while Netflix also chased. The latter’s involvement was somewhat ironic, as SIKTC was previously set up at the streamer as a series. Netflix passed on it at the end of 2024 after opting not to move forward following extensive development with both Mike Flanagan, as well as Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, the showrunners behind thriller series Dark. This time, Netflix’s movie group wanted to take charge, but Blumhouse was more aggressive, loving the idea of a world where children can see monsters, but adults cannot. Part of what spurred intense interest, according to sources, was the success of Weapons, Zach Cregger’s summer horror hit.

Blum will produce the live-action feature for Blumhouse with the company’s Shaun Sutton and Ryan Turek serving as executive producers. Stephen Christy and Tynion will produce the film for Boom! Studios/Penguin Random House.

Adam Yoelin and Mette Norkjaer will also executive produce. Series co-creator Dell’Edera will act as co-producer.

Children’s first story arc told of a town plagued by monsters that feast on children, with one teen survivor telling tales that no adult believes. Enter: a mysterious young woman named Erica Slaughter. The woman, who occasionally converses with her stuffed animal, isn’t there to mince words, but rather to mince monsters. The stories since have opened up a world that includes a monster-killing cabal and its sinister politics.

“It’s easy to see why audiences and critics alike have praised Something is Killing the Children,” said Blum in a statement. “James and Werther’s comic book series taps into our most primal fears, luring us into a fascinating world and introducing Erica Slaughter, the ass-kicking hero we all wish we had to fight the monsters that lurk in the dark.”

After bowing in September 2019, Children hacked its way to becoming the biggest horror comic since The Walking Dead and the biggest indie since Saga. The first issue has sold over 175,000 copies over the course of multiple printings while the comic has sold over 5 million since launch, a rare feat in modern publishing — not just in the indie comics world but even for Marvel and DC books. A spinoff, House of Slaughter, also written by Tynion, is also a top seller. Following BOOM! Studios’ acquisition by Penguin Random House in 2024, the publisher committed to a 100-issue run, ensuring the series’ presence on shelves for the next decade.

The comic is also a critical hit, earning an Eisner nomination for best new series in 2020 with a win for best series in 2022. Tynion won three consecutive Eisners for writing the series, a feat only matched by Alan Moore. SIKTC also won a Harvey Award for book of the year and a Ringo Award for best series. Tynion has since put out several other hit horror comics and launched his own media banner, Tiny Onion.

Something is Killing the Children is the comic book that changed my life and career forever,” stated Tynion. “Finding a partner who understood the potential of Erica Slaughter and the world Werther Dell’Edera and I have built was crucial, and we have found that partner in Jason Blum. Nobody understands horror better than Blumhouse, and I can’t wait for the world to see what we all have planned together.”

The adult animated series will see Tynion executive producing with Dell’Edera co-executive producing. Christy will executive produce the series for BOOM! with Adam Yoelin and Mette Norkjaer co-executive producing.

Tynion is repped by UTA Brillstein Entertainment Partners, and TroyGould. Boom! is repped by UTA.

  • Black Phone 2’s Rotten Tomatoes Score Promises Horror Fans a Worthy Sequel Movie

    [ad_1]

Black Phone 2 reviews are beginning to arrive, with the film looking to promise a worthy sequel to the 2021 horror movie of the same name.

What are the Black Phone 2 reviews saying?

Over on Rotten Tomatoes, Black Phone 2 is currently sitting at an 80-81% rating, which matches the 2021’s original score. Black Phone 2 has 25 reviews as of now, most of which are positive and praising of the film’s style and general step up from the original.

Rogert Ebert’s Brian Tallerico said the film is a “tick too long,” but is “at its best when it leans into surreal nightmare logic, but this weird movie works its fear factor in unexpected, creative ways.” Slant Magazine’s Rocco T. Thompson praised director Scott Derrickson, saying he “collapses dreams, reality, past, and present sidelong into a singular cinematic haunted space.”

Elsewhere, Variety’s Peter Debruge called the film “remarkably scary,” while Bloody Disgusting’s Meagan Navarro praised it’s “strong vision” and “unique interpretation of horror classics.”

Based on characters created by Joe Hill, the script for Black Phone 2 comes from Derrickson & C. Robert Cargill. The cast further includes Demián Bichir, Arianna Rivas, Miguel Mora, Jeremy Davies, Maev Beaty, and Graham Abbey. Derrickson, Cargill, and Jason Blum produce the movie, while Ryan Turek, Adam Hendricks, Daniel Bekerman, and Jason Blumenfeld serve as executive producers.

Black Phone 2 arrives on October 17, 2025.

  • Everything we learned at BlumFest 2024 at NYCC

Everything we learned at BlumFest 2024 at NYCC

    [ad_1]

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Indie horror production company Blumhouse is back in theaters with some of our favorite films and it was also back at New York Comic Con to tease 10 upcoming titles. The Mary Sue was able to attend this year’s BlumFest panel and trust me when I say you’re going to be excited about what’s coming up.

Moderated by Nicole Byer (Nailed it!), the BlumFest panel featured not only studio exec Jason Blum, but talent such as Leigh Whannell (The Invisible Man), Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day), and Meghann Fahy (White Lotus). Attendees were also surprised at the beginning with a video of Kevin Bacon asking you to “get in the van.” Afterward, a scannable QR code took you to a mailing list to sign up for The Van, Blumhouse’s fan program. Listen, if Kevin Bacon asks, I’ll do it.

    What are Blumhouse’s upcoming projects?

One thing I’ve always loved about Blumhouse is its extensive and diverse range of films and projects. There’s truly something for everybody. The slate of upcoming projects continues that tradition. Director Leigh Whannell joined Blum on stage first to discuss his upcoming Wolf-Man project and give fans a full trailer. As a modern reimagining of the classic wolf-man tale, it seems terrifying already. If there is anybody I trust to lead this project, it’s Whannell.

Attendees also saw the first-ever trailer for Christopher Landon’s upcoming film The Drop. It follows a woman on a date who receives a mysterious AirDrop that turns her night upside down. The first look at the film’s poster was also shown via a QR code for fans to share.

They also showed a trailer for another upcoming film, Jaume Collet-Serra’s (Black Adam) The Woman in the Yard, and a final trailer for Blumhouse’s first-ever game Fear the Spotlight, released on October 22. The Woman in the Yard promises to unsettle everybody even in the middle of the afternoon and Fear the Spotlight seems like an interesting dive into the video game world—with a horror twist.

Allison Williams (Get Out) dropped by to discuss M3GAN and the sequel M3GAN 2.0, and M3GAN herself appeared onscreen to remind us that she’s still here, watching us. Director Mike Flanagan (Ouija) also popped in to discuss his upcoming remake of The Exorcist. He told the crowd he “saw an opportunity to make the scariest movie I’ve ever made, and I just couldn’t resist it.” I still think about Midnight Mass so I know he’ll be able to deliver.

Blum also teased The Black Phone 2 to thunderous applause. The official poster for Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 was also revealed to the audience for the first time. It releases on December 5, 2025. At the end of the panel, fans snagged exclusive T-shirts with all the upcoming Blumhouse titles on the back. (Yes, I did grab one.)

What film are you looking forward to the most? I can’t wait to devour all of them!

  • Jessica Rothe Still Hopes Happy Death Day 3 Sees the Light of Day

Jessica Rothe Still Hopes Happy Death Day 3 Sees the Light of Day

    [ad_1]

The original Happy Death Day in 2017 was one of those “why hasn’t this done before?” horror movies, wherein college girl Tree (played by Jessica Rothe) got stuck in a time loop that always ended with her getting murdered. That first movie did really well, and its sequel Happy Death Day 2U also did pretty good! Over the past few years, it hasn’t been clear if a sequel would ever happen, but good news: it’s apparently still in the cards.

While doing promo for her newest film Boy Kills World, Rothe revealed to ScreenGeek that director Christopher Landon “has the whole thing figured out. We just need to wait for Blumhouse and Universal to get their ducks in a row.” As far as she’s concerned, Tree “deserves her third and final chapter to bring that incredible character and franchise to a close or a new beginning. But my fingers are so crossed.”

Presumably, she’s referring to how busy the two studios have been and where it can fit on their schedules. Setting aside COVID and last year’s strikes, they’ve partnered on a lot of horror flicks in the last five years: some have been reimaginings of the Universal Monsters, others have been original movies or reboots of Universal’s horror stable. Most of them have done pretty well at the box office, and in some cases, have (or will lead) to franchises all their own. Separately, Blumhouse merged with James Wan’s Atomic Monster earlier this year, and now has its sights set on video games, while Universal’s focused on big flicks like Fall Guy, the How to Train Your Dragon remake, and now the Mario movies.

Back in 2020, Landon revealed his planned title for the threequel was Happy Death Day to Us, though by that point, it was shelved. At that time, he teased the flm would be set on an entirely different day, which would help keep the presssure off doing the same exact thing a third time. With luck, it’ll get made and released fairly soon—if Now You See Me can come back with a third movie nearly a decade later, then so can this.

  • Blumhouse is Celebrating Halfway to Halloween with a Film Festival

Blumhouse is Celebrating Halfway to Halloween with a Film Festival

    [ad_1]

    Image: Blumhouse

Hope you like Blumhouse movies, because the company is re-releasing some old ones into theaters later this month.

Hoping to start a new annual trend, the five day-long Halfway to Halloween film festival sees Blumhouse partnering with AMC Theaters (across 100 theaters in 40 US cities) from Friday, March 29 to Tuesday, April 2. Split will kick things off on the 29th, followed by The Purge (March 30), Ouija: Origin of Evil (March 31), Insidious (April 1), and 2020’s The Invisible Man (April 2). In the case of Insidious, that’ll also mark the film’s 13-year anniversary. Each screening will also give viewers the chance to win a giveaway or see a recorded message from a particular film’s director or cast.

For those wincing about ticket prices wherever they live, Blumhouse has got you covered: tickets will run $8 a pop each day. The entire point of the festival, accoding to Blumhouse founder Jason Blum, is to “celebrate local communities of horror fans…with a fun, affordable and slightly evil night at the movies.” Along with big cities like Boston and Miami, theaters in Wichita, Spokane, Dallas, and New Orleans will be a part of the festival.

It’s looking like this’ll be a summer of re-releases. Along with Blumhouse, Dreamworks recently confirmed it was bringing Shrek 2 back to theaters to celebrate that film’s 20th anniversary. Sony’s allegedly bringing its eight live-action Spider-Man movies back, too. Not only does Columbia Pictures turn 100 this year, the second entry in each Spider-Man era hits a significant milestone: Spider-Man 2 will turn 20 on June 30, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be 10 on May 2, and Spider-Man: Far From Home hits five years on July 2. (These re-releases may also have something to do with Madame Web underperforming, but who can say?)

You can get tickets for the Halfway to Halloween festival here.

  • Jason Blum Says ‘Spawn’ Reboot Will Be the ‘Blumhouse Version of a Superhero Movie’: ‘It’s Going to Be Edgy and Original’

Jason Blum Says ‘Spawn’ Reboot Will Be the ‘Blumhouse Version of a Superhero Movie’: ‘It’s Going to Be Edgy and Original’

    [ad_1]

Jason Blum is bringing the “Blumhouse edge” to the upcoming “Spawn” film adaptation.

During a press line for Blumhouse at New York Comic Con 2023 (per Screen Rant), Blum teased the “Spawn” movie currently in development at his eponymous production company.

“It’s going to be edgy and original as compared to other superhero movies,” he said. “It’s gonna definitely feel like the Blumhouse version of a superhero movie.”

Blumhouse Productions is best known for producing horror movies such as “M3gan,” “Get Out” and the “Paranormal Activity,” “Insidious” and “The Purge” film franchises.

Back in 2017, original comic creator Todd McFarlane announced that a new movie based on his human-turned-Hellspawn was in the works at Blumhouse. McFarlane, who is on board to write and direct the film, is also producing with Blum.

“We just signed [Jason Blum] yesterday,” McFarlane said in a video announcement at the time during San Diego Comic-Con. “No more theoretical … It’s coming. Get ready for it. We’re going into production.”

Jamie Foxx is set to star in Blumhouse and McFarlane’s antihero film as Al Simmons, aka Spawn. In the comics, Spawn is a human-turned-Hellspawn who possesses superhuman strength and speed, as well as near immortality. The character also has the ability to teleport, shapeshift and heal.

Spawn first appeared in print in 1992 from Image Comics. New Line adapted the antihero character into a 1997 feature film starring Michael Jai White, and HBO aired the animated series “Todd McFarlane’s Spawn” from 1997 to 1999 that lasted for three seasons, each with six episodes, and nabbed two Emmy Awards.

  • ‘Dead By Daylight’ Horror Film Adaptation In The Works From Blumhouse Productions

‘Dead By Daylight’ Horror Film Adaptation In The Works From Blumhouse Productions

    [ad_1]

The video game Dead by Daylight is making its way to the big screen.

Production studios Blumhouse (“Get Out”) and Atomic Monster Productions (“M3GAN”), founded by horror guru James Wan (“The Conjuring” and “Insidious”), are joining forces with the gaming studio Behaviour Interactive to develop a feature film adaptation of the popular survival horror game, Variety reported.

In the high-stakes multiplayer game, one player takes on the role of a killer who stalks, slashes and strives to slaughter a team of four survivors before they can collaborate to escape death.

The game also features seven of its own exclusive monsters, including the Trapper, the Hillbilly and the Hag. In recent years, horror icons like Ghost Face and Freddy Krueger have also been added to the game via add-on packs for purchase.

No writer or director of the film has been named yet, but fans of the slasher simulator quickly flooded Twitter with excitement over the release.

Released in 2016, Dead by Daylight has since amassed 50 million players. Last March, the game’s official Twitter account celebrated the impressive milestone on social media.

“Thank you to all of our players,” the Canadian gaming studio said on Twitter. “We hope to see you in the fog!”

Speaking about the upcoming project, Wan said in a statement relayed by Variety: “In ‘Dead by Daylight’ the Behaviour team has created a love letter to the world of horror, building an incredible environment teeming with atmosphere and terrifying villains — perfect for a scary cinematic adaptation.”

He added: “We’re big fans of the game at Atomic Monster, and are thrilled to be teaming up with Blumhouse to bring this frighteningly visceral world to the big screen.”

The announcement of the “Dead by Daylight” feature-length film comes just days after Blumhouse announced its plans to launch a video game division devoted to creating horror-themed projects for consoles, PCs and mobile devices.
