  • ‘Cyberpunk Edgerunners’ & ‘Devilman Crybaby’ are Getting Blu-Rays

    [ad_1]

If you like physical media and got money to spend, you can end the year with Blu-Rays for ‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’ or ‘Devilman Crybaby.’

To everyone’s benefit, Netflix has been gradually putting out physical versions for some of its fan-favorite shows. For the anime fans, you’ll be more than happy to hear are Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and Devilman Crybaby are the next two series to leave Netflix jail by the end of 2025.

Earlier in the week, Crunchyroll opened up pre-orders for the box sets for both shows. Devilman’s Blu-Ray puts the entire 10-episode series on two discs. Developed by Science Saru, the anime is based on Go Nagai’s Devilman manga about Akira Fudo uniting with a demon so he and his friend Ryo Asuka can fight ancient demons. The series’ deluxe edition currently runs $95, comes with a 156-page art book and a clean opening sequence, and it’ll release on December 9.

Meanwhile, the Blu-Ray for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners will release on October 28 for $124. The three-disc set comes with an illustrated cover from the anime’s character designer Yoh Yoshinari, a booklet of the series finale from director Hiroyuki Imaishi, a two-year anniversary poster. Those still feeling the hurt from the Edgerunners finale will also get a trio of character animation cel sheets featuring co-leads David and Lucy in happy times before things went super south.

While Devilman as a franchise has been MIA since the Devilman Saga spinoff manga wrapped in 2020, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is getting a sequel series from returning studio Trigger. CD Projekt Red’s also at work on a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, whose redemption story is greatly owed to Edgerunners. Both of those projects are a ways a way, but Guilty Gear Strive recently added Lucy to its roster, which should help make the wait a little easier.

Godzilla Minus One Finally Roars Its Way Onto 4K and Blu-ray

    [ad_1]

Fans of Godzilla Minus One, it took longer than usual but we have fantastic news. The Oscar-winning monster movie is finally available to pre-order as a region-free physical disc that includes English subtitles, a feature missing from an earlier version.

The disc is available on Godzilla.com and comes with a 4K, a Blu-ray, special features, and so much more. You can read the full description at the site but for now, let’s just marvel at a few of the images.

There’s no specific release date yet but it’s expected to ship in September. Basically, this is the exact same release that was available in Japan earlier this year, but now includes English subtitles and menus.

After Godzilla Minus One broke all sorts of box office records in the U.S., and won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, a few months passed where it was impossible to see the film anywhere, legally. Eventually, Netflix fixed that and put it on its service but collectors out there have been clamoring for an edition to hold in their hands. Now they have it. Again, here’s the preorder link.

  • Target Confirms It Will Stop Selling Some Physical Media In Stores, Like Movies

Target Confirms It Will Stop Selling Some Physical Media In Stores, Like Movies

    [ad_1]

The future of physical media took another blow as Target confirmed previously reported plans that it would stop offering physical DVDs in store and transition to only carrying a select number of films in brick-and-mortar locations during specific, limited times. However, the retail giant said games would be—for now—unaffected by this change.

Over the last two years, we’ve seen more and more signs that the era of physical media might be ending. In 2023, Alan Wake II became one of the first AAA games to skip a physical release, and it can only be bought digitally. In 2024, Microsoft confirmed that Senua’s Saga: Hellbade II would also skip a physical release. We also learned earlier this year that Best Buy is winding down support for physical media in its stores and online. Checking the retailer’s site today, I can’t find any movies for sale. (Physical video games are still available.) Also in 2024, Disney shut down its long-running DVD/Bluray movie club. So yeah, if you like buying and owning movies and games, you might be nervous. And more bad news is here.

On April 18, IGN reported that a Target spokesperson told the outlet that the retailer is “transitioning the limited assortment of DVDs” currently available in some stores to its website, and now asks that customers shop for physical media online.

DVDs will sometimes be available at Target

However, physical movies and TV shows might return to stores during the holidays, when Target suggests people are more likely to buy a DVD.

“Based on our guests’ shopping patterns and broader industry trends, we’re transitioning the limited assortment of DVDs we carry in our stores to Target.com, where guests will continue to find thousands of titles,” the spokesperson told IGN. “Moving forward, we’ll offer select DVDs in stores when they are newly released or during key times throughout the year when they are more popular, like for gift giving during the holidays.”

IGN was told that this new physical media pivot won’t apply to video games, which will continue to be sold in stores.

While that might seem like good news, the reality is that if Target is willing to remove DVDs from its stores, then it might one day decide to cut physical games, too. And if that happens at enough retailers, then publishers might become less interested in spending the money on printing physical discs. That could lead us into a future where most big games only ship digitally. That wouldn’t be so bad if digital storefronts weren’t shutting down and old games weren’t being routinely killed by publishers after it’s been decided they are no longer profitable. We are entering a new era and it’s scary, folks. Hold on to your PS2 and Xbox 360 games tightly.

  • Two More Marvel Disney+ Shows Are Getting Blu-ray Releases

Two More Marvel Disney+ Shows Are Getting Blu-ray Releases

    [ad_1]

    Mr Knight Moon Knight Poster

For a long time, Marvel fans could only watch Marvel’s streaming shows if they had a Disney+ subscription. That’s changing, though, with two more shows getting Blu-ray releases though Steelbook.

Today, Marvel Studios announced in an Instagram story that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Moon Knight are both coming out on Blu-ray as Steelbook collectors’ editions. Both sets will be released on April 30. Marvel’s website lists the various bonus features on the discs, including behind the scenes featurettes, gag reels, and deleted scenes. Past Marvel shows on Blu-ray have retailed for $49.99.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier focuses on Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) in the wake of Avengers: Endgame. After Steve Rogers lives out his life in the past and passes his shield onto Sam, Sam decides to give it to the U.S. government instead of taking on the mantle of Captain America himself. However, when the government in turn gives it to a “new” Captain America—and a terrorist group called the Flag Smashers takes matters into their own hands during the mass displacement following the Blip—Sam and Bucky have to work together to carry on Steve’s legacy.

Moon Knight also takes place shortly after the Blip, but it takes a much more fantastical tone than The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Steven Grant (Oscar Isaac) is a mild-mannered museum worker in London who’s fascinated with Egyptian mythology. Little does Steven know that he’s also Marc Spector, an American who’s the avatar of the Egyptian god Khonshu (Karim El Hakim and F. Murray Abraham). Together, Steven and Marc fight against Arthur Harrow (Ethan Hawke), a religious zealot who seeks to awaken the goddess of judgment, Ammit (Sofia Danu and Saba Mubarak).

Marvel’s new Blu-ray releases join two fan favorite series

Previously, Marvel released two of its other early Disney+ shows as Steelbook Blu-ray sets: WandaVision and Loki. Both are available at Best Buy and other retailers. The Loki set includes an eagerly awaited scene in which Loki (Tom Hiddleston) turns his brother Thor (Chris Hemsworth) into a frog, while the WandaVision set includes a first look at the upcoming series Agatha: Darkhold Diaries.

  • PS5 Slim Disc Drive Comes With Bizarre Online Requirements [Update]

PS5 Slim Disc Drive Comes With Bizarre Online Requirements [Update]

    [ad_1]

Sony’s forthcoming smaller PlayStation 5 will make the disc drive swappable, allowing owners to remove or connect it as they wish. However, a new leak of the upcoming slim redesign points to an internet connection being required for the Blu-Ray player’s initial setup, igniting fears it will one day become an obsolete solution for playing old PS5 discs.

The surprise requirement was discovered through a new leak of the PS5 slim’s box as retailers begin stocking the console for its November launch. Shared with Call of Duty news account CharlieIntel, the images show a disclaimer on the box that reads, “Internet connection required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 console upon setup.”

As the requirement began circulating online, it struck some as unusual and pernicious. “Uhhhh…if this is the case, that is highly concerning and very strange,” tweeted Digital Foundry’s John Linneman. “Hardware connectivity shouldn’t be determined by a server that may not always be available.”

It’s not immediately clear if the internet connection requirement will truly be a one-time thing needed only the first time the console and disc drive are paired, or if it might be necessary every time the drive is taken off and reattached. One concern is that the requirement could make new PS5s unable to read discs at some point far in the future, if the servers utilized by Sony for the pairing are eventually taken offline. If so, it would be another big blow to video game preservation as the medium goes all-digital.

Read More: PS5 Slim Is A Lot Smaller Than We Thought

It’s possible that the requirement is just the company complying with an archaic bit of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act intended to prevent piracy. As pointed out by Lost in Cult CEO Jon Doyle and others, Section 1201 of the law makes it illegal to “circumvent a technological measure that effectively controls access to a copyrighted work.”

That includes optical drive firmware, and it’s long been a thorn in the side of right to repair advocates. As Wired reported back in 2020, the language has led a lot of older consoles to end up in landfills rather than get resold or re-gifted. Section 1201 was re-examined by the U.S. Copyright office in 2021. While some protections for repair were expanded, it stopped short of adding a full exemption.

According to Dealabs’ billbil-kun, the slimmer PS5 will officially release on November 8. While the standard model with the disc drive will be $500, the all-digital one will cost $450 with the stand-alone disc drive priced at $80. Sony has confirmed that once all current stock of launch PS5 consoles sells out, the slim models will be the only ones available.

Update 11/10/2023 4:31: PS5 slims are now out in the wild, including its detachable disc drive. So how exactly does the DRM work? Well in addition to needing to sync it to the console online first before it can be used, it apparently has to be reconnected to the internet everytime the PS5’s database is rebuilt, something players do from time to time to keep the system working well or because an update or reset demands it.

As the preservation account “Does it play” wrote, “In this scenario, once the service you need to connect to is gone, you can no longer use the disc drive.”
