    In honor of the anniversary, California State Parks hosted a big block party at the Capitol.

    Thousands attended California’s big birthday bash, featuring food trucks, California-grown treats, activities, and a laser light display.

    Block party helps Prince George’s Co. students head back to school in style

    Four-hundred people signed up to attend Saturday’s back-to-school block party at the Kentland Community Center in Landover, Maryland.

    The event co-hosted by District 5 council member Shayla Adams-Stafford not only provided backpacks, and school supplies it’s also helping students head back to school on Tuesday in style.

    “Haircuts and hair braiding,” said Adams-Stafford. “The way you judged society is how you treat your children.”

    WTOP spoke to some of the parents and grandparents, who brought their children to the block party, that also featured, food, face, painting, line dancing, a giant moon bounce.

    “I think it’s a blessing,” said Sabrina, as she waited with her two sons who were in line for free haircuts, while her daughter’s hair was being braided. “I’m just grateful.”

    In the hair braiding room, little girls waited patiently, Also, waiting patiently was the Yvette Pixley.

    She watched as her granddaughter Jaziah, who will be starting fifth grade on Tuesday, get the finishing touches on her hair.

    Pixley told WTOP that this event is wonderful because there are families who are less fortunate and could not afford these types of services.

    Adams-Stafford said it’s important to ensure your kids feel confident when they head back to school.

    Fantasy-themed block party will celebrate the 5th anniversary of Queen & Rook

    Philly board game cafe Queen & Rook is bringing a Renaissance Faire-like block party to South Street at the end of the month.

    The fantasy-themed event will mark the fifth anniversary of the restaurant and shop, taking place on the 100 block of South Street on Saturday, Sept. 28 from 1 to 8 p.m.

    Queen & Rook, which has been settling into its new location since May, is teaming up with the Philadelphia LARP Society for the celebration. “LARP” refers to live-action roleplay, a game form where players physically portray their own characters.

    At the “Fantasy Renn Faire,” visitors can participate in free activities and quests given by the Philadelphia LARP Society, allowing newcomers to try out live-action roleplaying for themselves.

    Attendees can enjoy performances of fire spinning, stage sword fighting, Shakespearean musical comedy and singing from a Slavic choir. Queen & Rook also put out a call for vendors to be a part of the block party, particularly ones with crafts and goods with a fantasy or “nerdy” theme.

    Every hour, Queen & Rook will pick winners for a raffle, giving out prizes from the cafe, vendors and other local businesses.

    Those at the block party can also get a taste of the cafe’s food, including its wood-fired pizza. Draft mead will be served, going with the Renaissance Faire motif, along with kombucha. Be sure to dress up in your best period or fantasy clothing.

    With the expanded new space, Queen & Rook is the largest board game cafe on the East Coast. The location has three floors, two bars and an arcade of classic video games.

    ​The Church of Scientology Seattle and the Seattle chapter of The Way to Happiness Foundation celebrated this year’s National Night Out Against Crime with a block party featuring live entertainment and barbecue.

    Seattle has had a long history of supporting National Night Out, an annual campaign that promotes police-community partnerships, bringing neighbors together in the name of safer and better places to live. It is designed to heighten crime prevention awareness, increase neighborhood support in anti-crime efforts, and unite communities.

    “As block watch captains for our area, we were happy to have the opportunity to throw a party for the neighborhood and meet some of the local residents. It was great to have those conversations about making the community safer for everyone.”

    In keeping with the purpose of the evening and to help spread the message of the rewards of living an honest life, volunteers handed out copies of The Way to Happiness, a nonreligious moral code written by author and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard and based entirely upon common sense.

    The theme of the evening was a precept from this booklet that undercuts crime: “Try to treat others as you would want them to treat you.”

    The Church sponsors The Way to Happiness campaign to uplift neighborhoods in the Seattle community. The booklet provides a guideline to living a life based on self-respect and personal integrity—traditional values that go a long way to reducing crime.

    The block party featured a live band, a unique 1924 Model T Ford truck where the barbecue was staged, a balloon artist and visits from city personnel and the Seattle Police Department.

    And the highlight of the evening, at least for the under 12 crowd, was the arrival of a fire engine from Seattle’s Fire Department Station 8. Youngsters received badges from the firefighters and it wasn’t only the kids who clambered up onto the seats of the bright red fire truck.

    To complement the message of The Way to Happiness, volunteers from another humanitarian campaign supported by the Church of Scientology were also on hand—the Seattle chapter of the Foundation for a Drug-Free World.

    Drugs and crime are inextricably interrelated in today’s society. And the Drug-Free World materials present the unvarnished facts about commonly abused drugs in a youth-friendly format to help young people make the self-determined decision not to abuse drugs.
