We all have our unusual food preferences, but it’s unlikely any are quite as weird as the craving experienced by a 36-year-old woman featured in a recent case report. Her doctors described how the woman developed a sudden hunger for bleach—a craving likely triggered by an autoimmune disorder.
Doctors in Michigan detailed the strange tale in a paper published last month in the journal Case Reports in Psychiatry. The woman had developed a severe bout of anemia caused by vitamin B12 deficiency, not long after she began to enjoy smelling and eventually tasting bleach powder. Though she was treated successfully for her anemia and deficiency, it’s unknown whether her bleach craving disappeared for good.
Mouthing bleach
According to the case report, the woman visited a local emergency room with symptoms of severe anemia, including shortness of breath, fatigue, and pain along her lower left side. Initial tests found that she had macrocytic anemia (anemia characterized by overly large red blood cells) caused by a chronic lack of vitamin B12. The woman was soon given a blood transfusion and admitted into the intensive care unit for further treatment and evaluation.
The woman had a history of past psychological disorders, including depression and anxiety, though she had been managing well with medications. But given this history and her severe anemia, the doctors were concerned that she may have also developed pica, or the compulsive urge to eat inedible things. Pica is a complex and poorly understood condition, often linked to psychological issues as well as anemia and nutritional deficiencies.
The woman received a psychological consultation, in which she revealed her bleach habit. She initially only enjoyed the smell and texture of bleach powder but later started to taste it. For more than a month, two to three times a day, she licked her finger, dipped it in the powder, and placed her finger on her tongue. She claimed to have never fully ingested the bleach and instead swished it around her mouth before spitting it out and rinsing her mouth out with water. She also reported that while she had no problem with her craving, her “family had expressed significant concern” and tried to get her to stop.
Later tests showed that the woman carried harmful antibodies to a protein known as intrinsic factor, which is needed for our bodies to absorb vitamin B12 from food. In other words, the woman’s vitamin B12 deficiency and subsequent anemia—and likely her pica as well—were caused by an autoimmune disorder.
This explanation only makes the woman’s ailment all the more unusual, however. For starters, bleach is already a rare, though not unheard of, craving seen with pica (more common cravings are dirt, chalk, or hair). Vitamin B12 deficiency is known to cause several psychological symptoms, but as far as the authors know, this is the first reported case of bleach craving linked to vitamin B12 deficiency. The case is also notable because the woman didn’t have an iron deficiency, a more common trigger for pica.
An uncertain fate
The woman was soon moved from the ICU to the general hospital unit and recovered significantly over the next three days. She was told to take regular vitamin B12 supplements and a medication for her gastritis. But she never followed up with doctors, so whether she continued treatment—or what her current health looks like—remains a mystery.
Still, the doctors say, the saga does provide a timely lesson about the importance of seeking psychiatric consultations for medically complex cases like this one.
“We suggest that nuanced presentations of pica warrant thorough psychiatric evaluation in critically anemic patients, especially since the pica can involve toxic substances like bleach,” they wrote.
The past year has been good for many anime fans, with hits like Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 and the Attack on Titan series finale. Fortunately, Otakus can anticipate even more content the following year, continuing on classic storylines and paving the way for brand-new adventures. So, to get you pumped up for the next phase, here’s our list of anime you can look forward to in 2024.

His robust abilities will be tested as he proves his worth to those who control the magical realm. Unfortunately for him, the Divine Visionaries won’t go easy on him, consisting of elite members such as the Light Cane, the Immortal Cane, and the Dragon Cane.

Haikyuu the Movie: The Battle at the Garbage Dump – February 16
It’s been a while since we’ve heard about the crows of Karasuno, and luckily, it won’t be too long until we see them again in their highly-anticipated movie. The volleyball boys have defeated many worthy adversaries, yet none of them come close to their longtime nemesis, Nekoma. The film will immediately take place where we left off in Season 4, starting with the heated battle of the Garbage Dump.
Currently, the Haikyuu movie only has a Japan release date in place, so we’ll have to see if its Western launch will follow suit. The Battle at the Garbage Dump will also act as the series’ Season 5 replacement, given that the finale has now been incorporated into a two-part film.
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Hashira Training Arc – April 2024
Each Demon Slayer arc has left the fans wanting more, especially with the action-packed conclusion of Swordsmith Village. And now, everything will be taken up a notch as Tanjiro Kamado trains to become a Hashira, a mantle fit for the ultimate demon slayers. Although he’s already been hard at work in the series’ numerous battles, he has much to learn from the gifted ensemble.
The Hashira Training arc will begin with a one-hour special, beginning off with Tanjiro visiting the Stone Hashira. Given that Himejima is presumably known as the strongest of the group, Kamado will undoubtedly have his hands full while he attempts to gain Gyomei’s approval amongst everyone else.

Things are starting to heat up as the main protagonist, Rimuru (Mikami Satoru in the previous life), goes head-to-head with Hinata Sakaguchi. The upcoming season will be broken down into two consecutive cours, taking place sometime in Volume 7 of the manga.
Besides the Season 3 premiere, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime will be celebrating its 10th anniversary on Jan. 30. The series is expected to host a special program to commemorate the event, so you can anticipate even more content before the following season.
Kaiju No. 8 – April 2024
Avid manga readers have undoubtedly heard about Naoya Matsumoto’s Kaiju No. 8. In this world, monsters, also known as “Kaiju,” are the norm, resulting in catastrophes around the city. That’s where the elite Japan Defense Force comes in to put an end to their tyranny, following the adventures of the aspiring fighter Kafka Hibino.
While Hibino initially promised to eradicate these grotesque creatures to his childhood friend Mina Ashiro, he ultimately finds himself in a janitor-like lifestyle at Monster Sweeper, Inc. However, a fire in him eventually reignites when he encounters Reno Ichikawa, setting his sights once again on the Defense Force.
My Hero Academia Season 7 – May 4

My Hero Academia’s Season 6 conclusion left off with yet another cliffhanger, introducing a powerful new character to the series. After the events of the Paranormal Liberation War, our heroes must deal with the threat of Tomura Shigaraki and All For One as the story continues to progress through the Final Act Saga.
Season 7 will also bring in the Star and Stripe and U.A. Traitor arcs, with the possibility of entering the Final War stage. It isn’t entirely clear when the My Hero Academia series will conclude, but it may happen sooner rather than later as the final events approach.
Tower of God Season 2 – July 2024

The famous Webtoon series Tower of God has received a second season due to the overwhelming support of longtime and new fans. Based on the announcement trailer, Season 2 will take part in Return Of The Prince and Workshop Battle arcs, with Baam and Ja Wangnan as the main protagonists.
During the events of the first installment, Baam focused on his mission to help Rachel reach the top of the Tower of God, a feat that can grant you anything you desire. Things have since changed with the upcoming season, where he now has a new goal in mind with the recent changes.
Beastars Final Season – Sometime in 2024
Netflix’s Beastars will finally come to an end with its last season, concluding the adventures of the beloved animalistic cast. Director Shinichi Matsumi and writer Nanami Higuchi are working on the next step in the series, along with the guidance of the creator, Paru Itagaki. The final season will take on a new anime arc featuring the notable characters Legoshi and Haru.
Since the Beastars manga series has previously ended, its final arc will likely be based on the ending chapters. But if you haven’t caught up with the recent episodes, you can tune in on Netflix to catch up on the latest events. You’ll primarily follow along the journey of the wolf Legoshi, who unexpectedly unleashes his primal urges in a semi-peaceful beast world, all while dealing with a murder at school.
Bleach Thousand-Year Blood War Part 3 – Sometime in 2024
The Bleach series has certainly had a long run, considering that its anime first began in 2004. So, now that we have entered modern times, the franchise has shifted over to Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, as the third entry, The Conflict, comes in 2024. The Jump Festa trailer gave us an insight into the fate of Ichigo Kurosaki and the rest of the group while they take on the main antagonist, Yhwach.
Although Bleach’s original ending was criticized, the Thousand-Year Blood War will hopefully give the fans some much-needed closure for the anime. The new installment has presumably been divided into four parts, with an unknown release date for the finale.

Diehard anime fans sure do have an appetite for Bleach. After all, it’s one of the biggest shonen anime ever made alongside Naruto and One Piece. While the haters have tried to disqualify the series from Big Three status time and time again, we don’t care. We just keep drinking down Bleach anyway.
And do you know what goes best with Bleach? That’s right! More Bleach. So get ready to wash down all that Bleach with the newest season of Thousand Year Blood War: Season 3.
What is Thousand Year Blood War about?
To understand the future of the Bleach series, first we must travel back into the distant past! Nearly 1000 years ago, the Shinigami of the Soul Society were locked in deadly combat with The Quincies. While the Quincies and the Shinigami both fight Hollows, they have opposite methods of doing so. The Soul Reapers attempt to purify the souls of Hollows, thereby allowing them to peacefully pass on to the afterlife.
The Quincies completely obliterate the souls of the Hollows they fight, which disrupts the balance of the spiritual world. If the Quincies had continued to destroy Hollow souls in this way, the fabric of the spiritual world would have torn apart. In order to protect the balance of the spiritual world, the Shinigami decided to wipe out the Quincies once and for all. This resulted in the near total elimination of Quincies, and the sealing of their King Yhwach in a prison for 999 years.
And now he’s ready to get out …
Yhwach spent his imprisonment biding his time getting stronger in order to take vengeance on the Shinigami who sealed him away. Now leading a military force called The Wandenreich, Yhwach “The Almighty,” he has begun to wage war on the Soul Society in order to rid the spiritual world of their influence, once and for all.
When will it be released?
According to the anime’s official Twitter account, the third season of Thousand Year Blood War is set to arrive in 2024! And they’ve even included a trailer, how thoughtful!
Who’s who in the cast?
Johhny Yong Bosch and Masakazu Morita will return to play series progatgonist Ichigo Kurosaki in English and Japanese respectively. Joining them will be Michele Ruff/Fumiko Orikasa as Rukia, Stephanie Shen/Yuki Matsuoka as Orihime, Derek Stephen Prince/Noriyaki Sugiyama as Uryu Ishida, Alain Mesa/Hiroki Yasumoo as Yatsutora “Chad” Sado, and Wally Wingert/Kentaro Ito as Renji Abara. The series antagonist Yhwach will be placed by Richard Epcar and Takayuki Sugo. So Yhwach out, if you know what’s good for you.
Coming off the heels of Bleach’s upcoming season of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood Waris the announcement that the popular supernatural sword-fighting anime is also receiving a new video game that looks pretty stunning and action-packed.
An Anime That Might Make You Put Your Minecraft Bed Next To Someone
Bleach: Soul Resonance is a 3D-action role-playing game that appears to play similarly to games in the Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm series or the upcoming Jujutsu Kaisen game, Jujutsu Kaisen Cursed Clash. According to the game’s website, players will experience a “low-latency combat experience with weapons and swords” and engage in strategic battles “with familiar faces on a battlefield full of blades.” The last Bleach videogame to release in the U.S. (outside of Bandai Namco’s delisted Shonen Jump crossover game Jump Force) was Bleach: Soul Resurrección in 2011 for the PlayStation 3. Bleach: Soul Resonance is being published by Nuverse (Marvel Snap) and is currently still under development. You can check out the announcement trailer for Bleach: Soul Resonance below.
Nuverse
Unlike its fellow “big three anime” series, Naruto, Bleach hasn’t had a notable run of licensed video games that resonate with fans quite like the Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm series. However, the early cutscene and gameplay footage shown off in Bleach: Soul Resonance’s announcement trailer, looks to change that.
Outside of having pretty clean-looking 3D models of the anime’s titular characters, Bleach: Soul Resonance appears to be following the show’s Soul Society and Hueco Mundo arcs—its first two major storylines. In it, protagonist Ichigo Kurosaki wages war against the entire Soul Society and Arrancars to rescue his kidnapped friends Rukia and Orihime.
Right off the bat, Bleach: Soul Resonance nails emulating the anime’s big-fight feel in its early gameplay footage by recreating iconic moments from Ichigo’s hard-fought bouts against the blood-hungry Kenpachi Zaraki and the stoic Byakuya Kuchiki. Both gameplay snippets look pretty promising despite being from an early build of the game. The trailer even plays Ichigo’s catchy theme song “Number One” by Shiro Sagisu and Hazel Fernandez which is always a nice touch to get fans excited to see some action. Time will tell whether Bleach: Soul Resonance will finally give the beloved anime series the Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm treatment or if it’ll be just another underbaked licensed video game.
If, like me, you’re making your way toward Anime Expo, the self-proclaimed “largest celebration of Japanese pop culture in North America” this coming weekend (yes, the Otaku of Kotaku will be there!), you may be feeling overwhelmed. But fear not! If you have no earthly idea what must-see events the great congregation of weebs has in store for you or how to make the most of your precious time during the expo, here’s a helpful guide to all the biggest panels at the four-day convention.
Disney’s New Post-Apocalyptic Anime Proves The Mouse Has Good Taste
Anime Expo, which takes place from July 1 to July 4 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, revealed a cavalcade of anime trailers and info on highly anticipated series like Chainsaw Man, Mob Psycho 100, and Trigun Stampede during last year’s event. This year’s convention is looking to maintain that energy with many must-see events as well. While the offerings at this year’s expo include listening to live music from DJ Diesel (that’s Shaq btw), samurai sword training, and discussing the LGBTQ+ themes in Sailor Moon, this list will only cover where and when big-name anime studios will host panels and chat with visitors.
It should also be noted that, while last year’s expo ultimately did require proof of covid vaccination or a negative test result, this year those requirements have been dropped, according to the event’s health and safety guidelines.Anime Expo, however, “strongly recommended” attendees get vaccinations and/or booster shots before attending and wear face masks while inside the Los Angeles Convention Center. Without further ado, here’s your definitive itinerary guide to the biggest panels at Anime Expo.
