INDIANAPOLIS — While many stayed home to recover from all the turkey and stuffing they ate on Thanksgiving, others were out before sunrise for Black Friday shopping at Cabela’s.
At the Noblesville location, some even camped outside the front entrance starting at 8 p.m. Thursday.
“To save a couple bucks” — that was first-time shopper Warren Sims’ goal Friday.
He went shopping with his whole family, who finished up their Thanksgiving feast, took a power nap, and got in line at just after midnight.
A line 400-people-long wrapped around the building. Cabela’s Manager Chris Jordan calls the turnout “typical.”
“We try to have a lot of fun on Black Friday,” Jordan said.
It’s no secret: nowadays online shopping is as simple as a click of a button and Black Friday deals aren’t limited to just one day.
Still, Jordan says that did not stop crowds from coming in droves.
“We’re traditional. All of our cash lanes are manned. Customer service, greeted at the door. That all goes hand in hand. I think people still like that Black Friday hands-on feel,” he said.
That’s definitely the case for first-time shopper Connor Johnson.
He, his mom and grandma traveled from Muncie to Noblesville just for the occasion.
“We’re looking at some gun stuff for hunting. They got some good deals on ammo boxes and stuff. I got a couple of those. We’re going to go back and get some 20 gauge stuff for my guns,” Johnson said.
US online spending is expected to set a record for Black Friday, according to Adobe Analytics, as steep discounts lured consumers against the backdrop of high inflation, kicking off the year’s biggest shopping event on a strong note.
Initial numbers from Adobe Analytics, the data and insights arm of software company Adobe Inc, showed shoppers are expected to spend between $9 billion and $9.2 billion online on Friday, topping its forecast for a modest 1% rise to $9 billion.
As of 6 p.m. EST (2300 GMT) on Friday, Adobe data showed shoppers spent an estimated $7.28 billion online.
“E-commerce demand has remained strong regardless, and Black Friday is set to surpass $9 billion in online sales for the first time, as consumers come to value the ease and convenience of shopping from home,” said Vivek Pandya, lead analyst at Adobe Digital Insights.
“Some shoppers are returning to physical stores for Black Friday, after two years where pandemic-related anxieties kept many people at home,” Pandya added.
Adobe Analytics, which measures e-commerce by tracking transactions at websites, has access to data covering purchases at 85% of the top 100 internet retailers in the United States.
Adobe’s analysis covers over 1 trillion visits to retail websites; Adobe does not disclose the names of the company sites it tracks.
Early holiday deals, including a second Amazon Prime Day event in October, were expected to take some of the shine off the biggest shopping days of the year.
More Americans placed orders through their smartphones over the holiday, with mobile shopping expected to drive 53% of Black Friday online sales. Mobile orders accounted for 55% of online Thanksgiving sales.
Cyber Week, which runs five days from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday, is expected to generate $34.8 billion in online spending, up 2.8% from the year-ago period, according to the report.
“As Black Friday discounts transition to being pre-Cyber Monday discounts, we expect online spending momentum to continue through the weekend,” Pandya said.

AURORA, Ill. (WLS) — Now that the feast is over, many are gearing up for a weekend full of Black Friday shopping.
Shoppers woke up early in search of those deals and they used the calories from Thanksgiving to fuel their mission.
Several stores opened early Friday after remaining closed on Thanksgiving.
And, experts say, you can expect more for your buck this year.
“I was scared that there was going to be lines. I wanted to get in before everything sold out,” said shopper Nancy Olson.
“I love great deals. I am a sucker for good deals and I love shopping,” added shopper Nora Butterly.
Black Friday shopping has changed over the years and, on Friday, some people got started at 6 a.m. at the Chicago Premium Outlets in Aurora.
Just before 1 p.m., Aurora police tweeted that the outlet mall had reached capacity. Police have temporarily closed the entrances and traffic is being redirected until further notice.
The mall was closed Thursday and that was the case for most places.
Schaumburg’s Woodfield Mall also opened at 6 a.m. Friday.
Shoppers packed into stores at Oakbrook Center all day long.
For some, the crowds became overwhelming.
Treyvon Keys came to the mall because he had the day off.
“It is very busy. A lot of people. I don’t really like that,” Keys said.
It should be a big weekend for retailers, as a survey shows that 80% of holiday shoppers plan to buy things this weekend. That’s 10% more than last year.
The same survey also said those shoppers will spend at least half of their holiday budget this weekend.
“Retailers know they need to sweeten those deals for these inflation-conscious consumers, and so we’re already seeing some of the lowest prices ever on certain items,” said Kristin McGrath, senior editor of RetailMeNot.
This is the season of giving, but some people were doing a quite a bit of shopping for themselves. They couldn’t pass on those bargains.
“I am just shopping for myself, but if I do see something I would think someone would like, then I would buy it,” Butterly said.
“This is not Christmas. This is just me spoiling myself. I have already Christmas shopped,” shopper Raven Spellman said.
She said she usually makes her Black Friday plan on Thanksgiving. She does her shopping first before meeting up with friends to help them make their rounds.
“So when they come — whatever store they want to go to — I just wait in the line for them because I am already out early before them,” Spellman said.
Some came to Oakbrook Center not for shopping, but to pay a visit to Santa with their list, knowing that Black Friday deals are no match for Santa.
Aurora police said there will be significant traffic delays, as the outlet mall opens.
One of the best things about shopping is uncovering a hidden gem. Nothing beats the thrill of stumbling upon a one-of-a-kind vintage piece or finally unboxing something you’ve been coveting for months. The beauty of shopping, both IRL and on the internet, is that you never know what you’ll find. And while there’s no arguing that great pieces can come from anywhere (we all love an affordable find), I can’t lie and say I’m not biased towards designer pieces. As someone that does regular trend forecasting and has learned about the history of fashion houses, there’s something to be said about investing in designer items.
On a practical level, investing in a luxury piece is a smart move in the long term, as these items are typically made for longevity and gain value over time. But beyond value, it allows one to change their relationship with shopping to be more intentional. You’re not spending egregious amounts on fast-fashion hauls; instead, you’re forced to slow down and invest in wardrobe pieces that lend themselves to being worn beyond one season.
It’s all these reasons and more that buying designer pieces is the move, in my opinion. Of course, it would be ignorant not to admit that buying luxury items isn’t always financially feasible. Luckily though, Black Friday and Cyber Monday are here, and with it comes the chance to swoop up a great deal. So in that vein, I’ve scoured Net-a-Porter, SSENSE, and FWRD to find the best designer sale deals that aren’t sold out (yet). The latest edition in Apple’s classic iPad lineup is the iPad 10th generation. This 10.9-inch tablet features a Liquid Retina display with Apple’s True Tone technology. It has Apple’s A14 Bionic chip, an upgrade from the iPad 9’s A13 chip. The iPad 10 is compatible with Wi-Fi 6 and 5G internet for fast performance. It also offers all-day battery life, so that you can easily take it to school, work or on your holiday travels without having to worry about plugging it in mid-day.

The latest iPad Pro comes with several major upgrades. Amazon workers and activists in 30 countries marked the traditional start of holiday shopping season with a series of walkouts and protests to demand better pay and working conditions.
In Manhattan, activists, labor unions and Amazon workers marched outside company founder Jeff Bezos’ penthouse in the tony Flatiron district.
Outside St. Louis, a few dozen workers walked out of the massive STL8 facility on Friday afternoon. It’s the second wildcat strike at the 900,000-square-foot fulfillment center, where workers also picketed in September to protest pay and working conditions. Workers at the location are calling for a raise of $10 an hour and the improvement of working conditions they say lead to too many workers being injured on the job.

The groups involved with the campaign are promoting it on Twitter under the hashtag #MakeAmazonPay. They have a range of demands. Many are asking for increased pay, an end to worker surveillance and a pace of work conducive to an above-average rate of workplace injuries.
Labor actions are also planned at Whole Foods stores, which Amazon owns, and at other locations in Bessemer, Alabama; Columbia, Maryland; Detroit, Michigan; Durham, North Carolina; Garner, North Carolina; Joliet, Illinois; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Portland, Oregon; and Washington, D.C.
In Germany, workers demonstrated at nine out of 20 warehouses Amazon has in the country, the company told Reuters, although it said the “vast majority” of employees reported to work as usual.
Amazon did not respond to a request for comment on the actions.
“On Black Friday, in what has already been named #MakeAmazonPay day, unions, civil society and progressive elected officials will stand shoulder to shoulder in a massive global day of action to denounce Amazon’s despicable multimillion dollar campaigns to kill worker-lead union efforts,” Christy Hoffman, general secretary of UNI Global Union, a group spearheading the protests, said in a statement. “It’s time for the tech giant to cease their awful, unsafe practices immediately, respect the law and negotiate with the workers who want to make their jobs better.”

Among the countries where Amazon is facing strikes and protests, according to UNI: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bangladesh, Belgium, Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Japan, Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, South Africa, Turkey and the U.K.
Monika di Silvestre, an official with Ver.di, a German labor group helping to organize the #MakeAmazonPay campaign, told Bloomberg that workers are particularly concerned with Amazon’s use of computers to monitor their productivity.
“The workers are under a lot of pressure with these algorithms,” she said. “It doesn’t differentiate between workers, whether they are old or have limited mobility. Workers stay awake at night thinking only of their productivity stats.”
Nearly half of all injuries recorded in U.S. warehouses in 2021 occurred at Amazon, according to the Strategic Organizing Center, a coalition of unions.
“Amazon employed one-third of all warehouse workers in the U.S., but it was responsible for nearly one-half (49%) of all injuries in the warehouse industry,” according to the report by the SOC.
Amazon has previously defended its safety record and denied that injury rates are higher at the company’s warehouses.
The company has faced mounting pressure in the U.S. from workers seeking to unionize. Earlier this year, a warehouse on Staten Island in New York City became the first Amazon fulfillment center to organize, and other facilities have also filed for collective bargaining rights. Most recently, workers at an Amazon warehouse in upstate New York voted against unionizing.
A federal judge last week ordered Amazon to stop retaliating against employees participating in workplace activism. The ruling came in a court case brought by the National Labor Relations Board, which sued Amazon in March seeking the reinstatement of a fired employee who was involved in organizing the company’s Staten Island warehouse.
