Dick Van Dyke, who turned 98 earlier this month, has had an incredibly successful Hollywood career that has spanned over seven decades. That’s why it came as a massive shock to many when Van Dyke revealed in a recent interview that he sees himself as a “lazy person” who never aggressively pursued a career in Hollywood.
When asked by CBS news correspondent Tracy Smith if he ever planned his Hollywood career, Van Dyke was quick to reply, “No. I never did. As a businessman, I’m not much good. I would do a movie or something and come home and just sit down and wait for the phone to ring.”
“I wasn’t aggressive. So I was out of work a lot because I didn’t go out and look for it,” Van Dyke added with a smile.
“And how did that sit with you?” Smith asked, to which Van Dyke replied with a laugh, “Well, I didn’t mind it. I’m pretty lazy really. When I’m having fun, you know, all right. But I’m a lazy person.”
“Really?” a visibly stunned Smith asked in response.
“I lack a lot of drive. I’ve been very lucky,” Van Dyke continued, to which Smith could only say, “Wow.”
“There’s always somebody to pick me up and put me over there,” Van Dyke added.
“That’s wonderful, it just sort of happened,” Smith replied, with Van Dyke saying in agreement, “It did. It just happened.”

Van Dyke went on to say that his “whole career has depended on” having fun.
“If I’m not enjoying myself, I’m really bad,” he confessed. “It’s such a blessing to find a way of making a living that you love, that you’d do for nothing. I feel so sorry for people who hate their jobs. I look forward to going to work every morning.”
Even after so many years in show business, Van Dyke is still feeling the love from fans of all ages.
“I’m on my third generation. I’m getting letters from little kids. And that’s what I love,” the Mary Poppins star said. “They watch the movies over and over. I’m getting so much more mail today than I did during the heyday of my career.”

CBS honored Van Dyke with the television special “Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic,” which aired last week. After filming the special, Van Dyke couldn’t deny that he was touched by this chance to look back at his career.
“You think, ‘I don’t deserve this,’ but it’s difficult to say how I felt,” he told People Magazine earlier this month. “I came home, and I said, ‘You know something? It’s going to be a couple of days before this actually sinks in that it happened.’”
“I never expected that kind of recognition,” he added. “My whole life went before me. I didn’t realize I had done so many things while I was 75 years in show business.”

The legendary singer Willie Nelson, who celebrated his 90th birthday earlier this year, is speaking out this week to reveal why he believes he’ll be reincarnated after he eventually passes away.
“I think we probably come back as ourselves, pretty much,” Nelson told CBS News. “I don’t believe life ends, ever.”
When asked if fans will always have him and his songs, Nelson smiled as he replied, “I’ll be back in a minute.”
Despite believing in reincarnation, Nelson is still very much focused on this life, and he’s just as active as he ever was. Nelson holds a fifth-degree black belt, and he practices martial arts daily, saying that he “started out in kung fu, went over to jiu jitsu, judo and taekwondo.”
Nelson explained that it was his childhood in Texas that inspired him to take up this practice.
“We had a saying in Abbot, Texas, where I come from. You only do three things down here: fight, f— and throw rocks. So, that’s what I grew up [with],” he said. “So, we fought everything and everybody, each other, we fought bumblebees on the weekend.”
Nelson went on to say that martial arts gives him “confidence.”
“I don’t have to worry about anything,” he said.

When Nelson celebrated his 90th birthday back in April, he admitted that he “never thought” that he’d make it to such an advanced age.
“I never thought I’d get here,” Nelson told People Magazine at the time, though he was quick to shrug off any fuss over this birthday by adding, “This ain’t nothing. It’s another day.”
After 60 years of performing, Nelson still loves performing onstage for his fans.
“I get a lot of fun out of playing for an audience,” he said. “There’s a great energy exchange there. It’s what keeps me going.”
While Nelson admits that his hearing is “not the best,” he still feels young at heart.
“As they say, laughter’s the best medicine,” he said. “I’ve always enjoyed a good joke.”

Nelson also has no intention of giving up on songwriting and performing anytime soon.
“I haven’t quit … I’m 90,” he said in his latest interview. “Maybe I should, but … after every tour. I said, this is it. And then get the urge again to go back”
Nelson made similar comments to AARP earlier this year, saying, “Jokingly, I retire after every tour.”
“But I’m always ready to go back again,” he continued. “I like the bus. I have everything I need on the bus. I never have to go into a hotel room anywhere. It’s not that bad.”
Earlier this year, Nelson scored a major honor when he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
“Naturally, it was a great honor, you know,” Nelson said. “I know the difference between the Rolling Stones and Hank Williams, but still it’s all rock and roll.”

The legendary Hollywood star Dick Van Dyke, who is set to turn 98 on Wednesday, is speaking out this week to praise his 52 year-old wife Arlene Silver.
People Magazine reported that in a clip shared to the Instagram Story of the photographer Laura Johansen, Van Dyke can be seen smiling as he looks at his glamorously-dressed wife while sitting in a chair in a dressing room.
“You look like a movie star,” he told Silver, 52, as another voice asked, “Doesn’t she?”
“She really does, doesn’t she?” Van Dyke replied, jokingly adding, “I saw her first!”
Earlier this year, Van Dyke credited Silver with being a huge part in his longevity.
“Having a beautiful young wife half my age to take care of me [helps],” Van Dyke said, according to The New York Post.
Van Dyke went on to say that a “positive attitude” helps to keep him healthy, adding, “I get that from my wife.”

Silver is Van Dyke’s second wife, as he was previously married to Margie Willett from 1948 until they divorced in 1984. After his divorce, he was in a relationship with the actress Michelle Triola for over thirty years before she passed away in 2009. Van Dyke met Silver at the 2007 Screen Actors Guild Awards, when he was 81 and she was 35.
“We share an attitude,” Van Dyke previously said of Silver. “She can go with the flow. She loves to sing and dance, which we do almost every day. She’s just delightful.”
Silver has also opened up about the moment she met Van Dyke.
“He said, ‘Hi, I’m Dick.’ The first thing I asked him was, ‘Weren’t you in Mary Poppins?’ We got along immediately as friends, so it didn’t feel like he was so much older than me,” she recalled. “He is the most perfect human being. I’ve never met anyone so happy, so genuine, so amazing. He’s just like a happy pill.”
They were friends for many years before their relationship turned romantic, and Van Dyke has expressed his relief that his fans are so supportive of their marriage.
“I thought there would be an outcry about a gold digger marrying an old man, but no one ever took that attitude,” he said.
“He is a lot of fun. He’s not immature in a bad way. He’s immature in a good way with the wonder of a child,” she once told Parade. “He’s just fun, he’s open minded. He’s not stuck in his ways at all. We’re both like children. We feel like we’re both having a second childhood.”

Van Dyke took to Instagram last Friday to offer some advice on aging.

“He looks fantastic,” one fan commented. “I like his philosophy. He is certainly doing something right. I have so much love, admiration and respect for him and all he’s done for the world. He is a bright light in a world that can be so dark. So grateful for the joy he brings to the world.”

It sounds like Chrissy Teigen had a “nice” but emotional birthday this year.
The cookbook author rang in her 38th year around the sun on Thursday. And the following day, she took to Instagram to share with fans that she celebrated her special day by spending time with her four kids and friends – and doing ketamine therapy. During the session, Chrissy said she “saw” her late son, Jack. Alongside pictures from that day, she wrote:
“I had a really nice birthday went to to see my friends @flamingo_estate, had a beautiful lunch with friends, then did ketamine therapy and saw space and time and baby jack and some weird penguins and cried and cried and cried. Then laid with my babies, then hot pot, then hung with my best friend”

Heartbreaking. We cannot imagine how hard that session must have been. Perezcious readers will recall that Chrissy and John Legend tragically lost their son Jack in 2020 due to partial placenta abruption. She opened up about the devastating experience two years later, saying at Propper Daley‘s “A Day of Unreasonable Conversation” summit “had to make a lot of difficult and heartbreaking decisions” at the time. She continued:
“It became very clear around halfway through that he would not survive, and that I wouldn’t either without any medical intervention. Let’s just call it what it was: It was an abortion. An abortion to save my life for a baby that had absolutely no chance. And to be honest, I never, ever put that together until, actually, a few months ago.”

The legendary Hollywood star Dick Van Dyke will be turning 98 on December 13, and CBS is preparing to honor him with a special to mark this occasion.
Variety reported that “Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic” is set to air on CBS at 9pm on December 13. Van Dyke himself will produce the special with his wife Arlene Silver along with White Label Productions. The special will be executive produced by Craig and Clara Plestis of Smart Dog Media, and by Deena Katz, who will also cast it. The showrunner of the special is Ashley Edens.
“I started with CBS under contract in 1955 with the CBS morning show, then ‘The Dick Van Dyke Show’ and ‘Diagnosis Murder,’” Van Dyke said. “I’ve been with the CBS family for almost 70 years, and I couldn’t be prouder. I’m incredibly honored that CBS will be throwing a 98th birthday special for me. Can’t wait to be part of the show!”
The special will be filmed on the legendary set of “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” and it will feature archival footage from Van Dyke’s career, including scenes from Mary Poppins, Bye Bye Birdie, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and more.

Earlier this year, Van Dyke revealed his secrets to making it to such an advanced age.
“Genes, I guess, for one thing,” Van Dyke told Yahoo! Entertainment. “Having a beautiful young wife half my age to take care of me — that works! My positive attitude, I get that from my wife.”
“I wrote a book called ‘Keep Moving‘: I still go to the gym three days a week and work out,” he continued. “And I advise everybody to do that, because that’s what ages people — it’s just a stiffening up and not exercising their muscles and their lungs. Exercise is the answer.”
After a lifetime of performing, Van Dyke still can’t believe how successful his career has been.
“When I was young, I really was hoping to make a living. What happened to me was such a surprise,” he said. “The successes I’ve had, I still can’t get over it.”
Daily Express reported that Van Dyke is looking forward to making it to his 100th birthday.
“I’m looking forward to 100,” he previously stated. “George Burns made it, and I’m gonna do it too.”
“Keep moving is the main thing. I think I reiterate three or four times in the book,” he continued while also suggesting that people “going down the stairs sideways,” as while it may feel good on the knees “it throws the hips out and the back starts to go out.”
“The next thing you know, you’ve fallen down and broken your hip,” he explained. “So even if it hurts a little, go down the stairs front-ways.”
Van Dyke believes that his optimistic attitude plays a huge role in his longevity.
“It’s more in my nature to be optimistic, I think. I’m one of those people who gets up on the right side of the bed in the morning,” he said. “I get up and have a cup of coffee and go to the gym before I talk myself out of it because I will, as anybody will.”

What did you do to celebrate your birthday this year? Maybe a roller rink skate party with your mom springing for skate rentals for all your friends, or maybe a low-key shindig, cake and candles? Beyoncé reportedly chose that last option to ring in the big 4-2 earlier this month.
People reported, based on an unnamed source, that Bey jetted off immediately after her September 4 show in Los Angeles (also known as The One Where Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner Made Out and Did Not Adhere to the Dress Code) and enjoyed some downtime with her family in French Polynesia, where she rented “several private villas” for herself and her family.
“It was a nice break for Beyoncé,” the source told the mag. “The tour has been intense. She needed to recharge for a few days.”
Bey and her husband, Jay-Z, reportedly got in plenty of quality time with their kids, 11-year-old Blue Ivy and 6-year-old twins Rumi and Sir.
“They enjoyed the beach, had family dinners, and engaged in several resort activities,” the source said. “Everyone had the best time.”
After the break was over, the singer’s sold-out Renaissance world tour reconvened in Vancouver on September 11.

On Saturday, the “Only Murders in the Building” star turned 31, and gave her followers a look at her birthday celebration.
“31,” she wrote next to the photo carousel from the evening. Gomez’s post led with a picture that put her outfit on display. For the occasion, the “Look at Her Now” singer wore a red dress with floral accents. Channeling old Hollywood, Gomez, wore her hair pinned in an updo, with a bang in the front.
Adding to her look, the Rare Beauty founder wore a pair of strappy black sandals with a red flower on the back. The post also gave Gomez’s followers a look at the guest list. Everyone knows one. Maybe it’s an old college acquaintance of yours, who is really getting her money’s worth from that wedding photographer by posting shots from the day every chance she gets. Anniversaries are kind of a gimme, sure, but she’s out here trotting out snaps of her in that white dress for every possible occasion. Father’s Day? Here’s me and my dad, walking down the aisle. Friend got engaged? Congrats, bestie! Here’s a photo of us at my wedding! National Ice Cream Day? LOL, here’s a vaseline-lensed getting-ready pic of my bridesmaids and me eating fro-yo in our matching satin robes, and it definitely was not posed, and by the way, remember when I got married? I looked great, right?
Now, we’re not saying King Charles III was once a bridezilla, but, you know, kind of a look to celebrate your eldest son and heir’s birthday by posting a photo of him helping you practice to become king. It’s like a wedding, but to an entire country and centuries-old tradition. Potato, po-tah-to.
On Wednesday, the official Instagram of the Royal Family shared a previously unreleased photo of Charles and Prince William at a dry run ahead of the May 6 coronation ceremony for Charles and the stepmom also known as Queen Camilla, featuring William pinning something to his grinning dad’s golden robe.

While Prince Harry was attending the coronation of King Charles III last month, Meghan Markle and their two children, Archie and Lilibet, stayed behind at their home in Montecito. They reportedly planned a “low-key” celebration for Archie’s fourth birthday on May 6, and thanks to one nearby business owner, we now know the details of a memorable present from the weekend.
According to People, the owners of Mad Dogs & Englishmen Bike Shop, a bike shop in town, hand-delivered a bike as a surprise gift for the young prince. Owner Jennifer Blevins told the magazine that her partner Martin is from England and decided it would be a nice gesture to celebrate the day, which just so happened to also be the day of the coronation.
“He went and he got one of our little Specialized kids’ bikes—they’re really nice little bikes—and he’s like, ‘This one’s perfect, it’s got training wheels,’” she said. “And so he went and got some birthday balloons, and he got some flowers for Meghan and a birthday card, and he said, ‘Okay, I’m gonna bike over and take it to their house.’” She added that the couple’s security guards ran a quick background check and then accepted the bike.
It wasn’t until a few weeks later that the Blevins learned the fate of the gift. On Instagram, they posted a thank-you note they received from Harrison Colcord, an employee of the couple, on stationery reading “The Office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.”

Carol Burnett feels as young as ever in the lead-up to her 90th birthday on April 26.
When asked about the upcoming milestone, the comedy legend told People, “I can’t wrap my head around it. I still feel like I’m about 11, but I’m amazed. It sure went fast.” These days, she admitted she’s just “glad because I’ve got all my parts—got my hips, I got my knees and I’ve got my brain, so I’m happy about that.” Burnett hopes that her legacy is, “I made people laugh, made them feel good when they might have been down.” Reflecting on The Carol Burnett Show, she added, “In my fan mail, many say it was the only time the family would get together, to watch and laugh. And that sometimes they were lonesome and were cheered up by our show. That’s a good feeling.”
To celebrate the occasion, NBC will honor the six-time Emmy winner with a two-hour special airing on her birthday, Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love. The show will featuring special guest stars such as Amy Poehler, Cher, Ellen DeGeneres, Julie Andrews, Steve Carell, Taraji P. Henson, and Tracee Ellis Ross. It will also include musical performances by Bernadette Peters, Billy Porter, Jane Lynch, Katy Perry and Kristin Chenoweth.
Burnett said that growing up in Los Angeles, she knew the entertainment business was for her right from the start. “I used to pretend to be on a radio show,” she explained. “I would yell out the window, ‘Now ladies and gentlemen, we have a young girl who is going to sing here without any musical accompaniment.’ One time, a man next door said, ‘Will you turn that goddamn thing off?’ And I thought, ‘I’m a hit. They think it’s real.’” But it wasn’t until college that she realized she had a particular gift for comedy. “I was pretty much of a quiet student all through grammar school, junior high, and Hollywood High,” she recalled. “I would kid around with my friends, the neighborhood kids, stuff like that. But I never really thought about it until I got to UCLA and I was in an acting class. A lot of the kids at the class were doing heavy, dramatic stuff and I thought, I can’t do that. So I picked something light and they laughed. That’s when the bug bit.”
The actor would go on to star in The Carol Burnett Show for 11 seasons and Carol & Company for two more. And she’s still working today, most recently guest starring on Better Call Saul and appearing next in the upcoming Apple TV+ series Palm Royale.

Happy Sag season, y’all! After a tumultuous few weeks of eclipses and a sneaky Scorpio season, the long-awaited ~good vibes~ are finally in order. The planets have swiftly shifted from the somber, emotional water sign into the fun and free fire sign Sagittarius (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21), putting the collective into more uplifting spirits just in time for the holidays.
If you need a sign to: send those risky texts, wipe those tears, leave your room, splurge on those woven Bottega Veneta boots you’ve been eyeing since last year… This is it.
Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter, a planet of abundance, luck, expansion and optimism, which is why (for the most part) a Sag will always have their best foot forward and a cheeky smile on their face.
The New Moon in Sagittarius early last week was one of the luckiest days of the year for manifesting and setting intentions post-Eclipse. The moon in Sagittarius aligned with the two benefics in astrology — a.k.a. the luckiest planets in the sky, Venus and Jupiter. It made a trine (i.e. harmonious aspect) to Jupiter, the planet of abundance, and joined Venus in Sagittarius, the planet of love and beauty. If you have a project you’ve been wanting to bring to life or been wanting to move somewhere new, harness the revitalizing energy of the next two weeks to make those plans.

After moving in retrograde since July 28, Jupiter — in its home sign, Pisces — is now stationed directly. Jupiter rules over freedom, expansion and visions beyond our wildest dreams; to be in retrograde is to have limitations and restrictions — a big fear for Jupiter. The direct motion of Jupiter should clear away limiting beliefs surrounding faith in the house that you have Pisces in and usher in some much-needed abundance for the next month, before it moves into Aries right before the New Year.
Now for what you’re actually here for: the fashion stuff! First, let’s do a roll call of my favorite Sagittariuses in fashion, which include Gianni Versace, Thierry Mugler and (I’m getting teary-eyed writing this one following his recent departure from Gucci) Alessandro Michele — or what I like to call, The Holy Trinity of Maximalist Fashion™. Always over the top, these fashion designers have never been afraid to think outside the box and bring their larger-than-life Sagittarian fantasies to the runway.
In honor of Sag season, I’ve compiled a gift guide for everybody’s favorite comedians. Being the fab fashion writer/astrologer/detail-oriented Virgo I am (the credentials are obviously there), I’ve curated the list so every item has some kind of astrological, Sagittarian connection to it. Enjoy!

Birthday parties can be no fun for busy overextended parents. I’m excited to bring you my $100 Birthday Party Series with great ideas for themes, menus, decorations and even gifts for all age groups, all for under $100. Come back every week for more birthday party suggestions.
They’re getting older, and birthday parties ain’t what they used to be… the best way to curb the overspending on a party is by keeping the numbers down. A good rule of thumb: whatever your age, you can invite that many friends.
The other key to cutting down on costs: host it at home. There are loads of cool ideas for inexpensive at-home parties for kids ages 5-12. You could have:
– A sleepover party, complete with movies, tents, pizzas, make-your-own popcorn bar, glow-in-the-dark accessories, and an awesome breakfast in the morning.
– A dance party. Get your hands on a disco ball, strobe light, or fog machine. Add karaoke into the mix for some laughs. Throw in some fun stuff like blow-up guitars, plastic mics, cool sunglasses, and more.
– Olympic games’ party. A variety of games and a few medals will keep kids entertained.
– A food fight. If you dare. Mention on the invitation that everyone should wear old clothes. Then arm them outside with a can of whipped cream and some foil pile pans. Have the strinkler or hose ready (this is obviously for summer birthday babes).
– A make-your-own party. Kids can make shirts (tie-dye or with their favourite characters), jewellery, model cars or airplanes, pillowcases, painted pottery, etc. While they’re at, have them make their own pizzas or subs, make their own cupcakes or decorate their own cookies, and make their own juice bar.
If the thought of having a bunch of kids in your house for a party gives you hives, then consider other inexpensive options where you can host a party elsewhere.
– Community centres can oftentimes be rented. So can places like church basements, daycares, or even school gymnasiums.
– Parks. Even in the winter you could have a sledding or skating party with cake and hot chocolate in the nearby chalet.
– Bowling. Renting a bowling lane and a few pairs of shoes, plus getting a pizza, should keep you at less than $100.
– Depending on the number of kids, you might also be able to host a small ‘do at the movies with your child’s closest friends.

Babies
What an exciting milestone when our babes turn 1 and 2 years old. While we want this to be a special memory, we also don’t want it to leave a huge dent in our bank accounts.
The most important thing to remember when throwing a baby’s birthday party: keep it simple. Always time the party around nap time – have a morning ‘do with a light brunch spread (fruit and cheese platters, danishes and croissants) or an interactive make-your-own bagel bar. Or, have a late afternoon party with finger foods and other noshies. Noontime birthday parties only result in meltdowns and overtired celebrators.
Home parties work best for this age. Hosting it at a children’s play centre can be expensive and will be lost on your little one anyhow (you have plenty of years ahead of you to hold parties at outside venues). Themes can vary depending on the child’s interest, but it’s always easier (and more cost effective) to choose a colour theme and then add in accessories that appeal to your baby (for example, use primary colours like red, blue and yellow, and have a few Mickey Mouse decorations to add in). There’s no reason at this age to shell out extra money for themed plates, cups and tablecloths.
When friends and family ask you what they should buy your baby, again: keep it simple. Ask for a small gift so they have something to open (perhaps books to build up their library) and gift cards. There will always be something you’ll need or want to buy your babe down the line, and those gift cards will definitely come in handy.
Goodie bags at this age aren’t necessary. However, if you do want a little token of thanks for party guests, give out a small box of baked goods or some other treat, a small potted plant, or a cute homemade card with your baby’s handprint.

There was a very special moment when Sirius XM Radio’s Joe Madison surprised singer Dionne Warwick during an interview about her upcoming Christmas and 80th birthday fundraiser that will take place on Saturday, Dec. 12 as a live online event.
