    Chambers County man arrested after killing pedestrian while driving recklessly, using phone

    CHAMBERS COUNTY, Texas – A Chambers County man now faces a manslaughter charge after running over a bicyclist while driving recklessly earlier this year.

    The accident happened in the early afternoon on April 14 at FM 1405, South of McKinney Road. Adrian Combs was riding his bicycle on FM 1405 when he was struck by the vehicle.

    Upon arrival, officials with the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office discovered that Combs’ injuries were fatal.

    Authorities say the driver of the vehicle that hit Combs, Douglas Smith, was driving recklessly and actively on his phone at the time of the collision. He was booked in Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office Jail and charged with manslaughter on Friday.

Finally, they approve to swim in the river,” said Brice Perrin, a Paris resident. The cleaner water levels allowed all three disciplines of the triathlon to proceed as scheduled. This gave American tourists Cyndi Graham and Doug Layne an unexpected spectacle during their layover. “They did the swim. We hope everyone is safe after the event,” Graham said. “We were excited they went through with it. It would have been sad if they didn’t get to do it.”The athletes raced two laps, roughly a mile, in the Seine, followed by 25 miles of cycling and a 6.2-mile run past iconic landmarks.     SEATTLE (AP) — A woman suffered injuries to her face and neck after a cougar leapt out and “latched onto” her while she was cycling with a group on a trail in Washington state, authorities said.

    The incident happened Saturday on a trail northeast of Fall City, a community about 25 miles (40 kilometers) east of Seattle, KOMO-TV reported. Friends of the woman, 60, “were able to detach and fight this thing off” after it ”latched onto” her, said Sgt. Carlo Pace with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Police.

    “They were able to pin down a good size lion with its claws and teeth and everything else under a mountain bike until we arrived,” he said.

    The woman was released from the hospital.

    The agency described the cougar as a 75-pound (34-kilogram) young male. The animal was shot and killed by wildlife police.

    Witnesses told authorities they had seen a second cougar run through the area. But agency police during a search were not able to find a second animal.

    The agency said cougar attacks on people are rare.

    Last July, an 8-year-old on a camping trip in Olympic National Park in Washington sustained minor injuries in a cougar attack.

    Prosecutors filed a criminal charge Thursday against a white man captured on camera with his hand around the neck of a Black man, who relatives said has developmental delays.A video, which has now gone viral, of the incident shows Robert Walczykowski, 62, with his hands around the neck of Trevon Burks. Walczykowski is heard accusing Burks of stealing a neighbor’s bike days earlier.In the video, Burks denied the theft.Walczykowski is charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct, according to a criminal complaint filed in Milwaukee County Circuit Court on Thursday.”My son didn’t do anything wrong and, if I was to get justice, I would want him to pay for what he did,” Burks’s mother, Tracey, said during a news conference this week. “That was very wrong for him to do that and he could’ve come at my son a different way. He didn’t have to choke my son. It was a hatred thing, what he did.”The video has drawn support for Burks from across the country.Walczykowski is due in court Wednesday, Nov. 2 for an initial appearance, according to court records.

    MONDAY, Sept. 26, 2022 (HealthDay News) — Biking while stoned leads to thousands of serious crashes each year, a new study suggests.

    Between 2019 and 2020 alone, more than 11,000 people were treated in U.S. emergency rooms for injuries that happened as they rode a bicycle while high on methamphetamine, marijuana or opioids, researchers found.

    “The people affected by these injuries likely have substance use disorder, may be more likely to be homeless and may not have access to other types of transportation,” explained lead researcher Bart Hammig, a professor of public health at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. “This is an often overlooked and ignored population when addressing serious injuries related to bicycle crashes.”

    One way to curb these crashes is to get these drugged individuals off their bikes, he said.

    “Better and easier access to transportation for persons who may use bicycles as their main mode of transportation is needed in order to aid in the prevention of injuries among this population,” he said. “In addition to treatment of injuries, drug referral systems need to be readily accessible in emergency departments.”

    Hammig and his University of Arkansas colleague Robert Davis, an assistant professor of public health, found that bicyclists who crashed while high often had more serious injuries than those who weren’t using drugs.

    Most of those injured were men (86%), according to the study. Of those, 22% had broken bones; 19% injured internal organs; and almost 33% had to be hospitalized. In all, 1% suffered a concussion.

    Some likely resulted in deaths, but because the data came from emergency room records, researchers couldn’t report on fatalities.

    The most common drugs found were methamphetamine (36%); marijuana (32%); and opioids (19%). Nearly a quarter of injured bikers had also been drinking alcohol, the study found.

    For the study, researchers used data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System. Of more than 480,000 injuries reported between 2019 and 2020, about 3% involved drugs.

    Dr. Eugene Vortsman, an emergency room physician at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, N.Y., said that riding a bike stoned can greatly increase the risk for crashes and serious injury.

    He suspects that the number of crashes identified in the study is only the tip of the iceberg.

    “Due to the limitations in data, this study is underestimating the true severity of the incidence, as well as the severity of injury associated with any intoxicant,” Vortsman said. “Even with the data available, it is clear that the risk of injury is elevated.”

    More study is needed to learn about bikes for primary transportation and to find ways to lower the risk, Vortsman said.

    Some examples include evaluating social factors affecting health to better earmark resources. Improving access to public transportation, better roadside safety measures, and education about the dangers of operating any mode of transportation while under the influence are key, he said.

    “Proper education allows patients to better understand their risk of injury and can provide a safer road for them as well as other bicyclists,” Vortsman said.

    The study was recently published online in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs.

    Bike enthusiasts everywhere know the pains of riding long distances and having to carry around additional tools just in case something goes wrong while out for a ride. Tires can get low on pressure, the inner tube may pop and a tire replacement may be needed, or even something as simple as riding at night and being visible to other riders or cars. Traditionally, separate tools are needed to address each of these issues individually and can be quite cumbersome to pack before riding. Something so basic, yet crucial when out riding, having a tool that can address all these issues simultaneously, all while being the size of a standard bike kickstand is a lifesaver.

    Constructed from high quality aluminum alloy, Kickstand Pump is a sturdy kickstand, tire pump, LED taillight and tire lever all-in-one. The kickstand replaces any 26”, 27.5”, and 29” tire size kickstand that uses Shrader and Presta tire valves. Dunlop vales are not currently supported.

    Kickstand Pump is also light in weight while being multi-functional. A standard pump, kickstand, taillight, and tire lever will easily weigh over 400g adding additional weight to the rider and the bicycle. Kickstand Pump weighs in at a little over 200g while performing all of the above mentioned functions in creatively designed product.

    Kickstand Pump is easy to use. Just remove the stand from the bicycle, unscrew the LED taillight at the end, and remove the pump hose that resides inside Kickstand Pump. The hose is attached to the exterior of Kickstand Pump and can instantly pump tires up to 120psi. Kickstand Pump’s pressure is so impressive that it can even be used to pump up motorcycle or automobile tires as well.

    The LED taillight can be turned on in 3 different patterns and turned off with a simple switch. The built-in tire lever is also how Kickstand Pump connects to the bicycle frame. Unlike other cheap plastic tire levers, Kickstand Pump’s tire lever is crafted from sturdy aluminum alloy and uses Kickstand Pump’s body to provide better leverage when removing tires to access the inner tube.

    Kickstand Pump comes in either black or carbon-fiber pattern with an additional Silver option being offered as a Stretch Goal through their Kickstarter campaign.
