  • Jay-Z Reflects On Public Scrutiny That Daughter Blue Ivy Faced Over Her Hair

Jay-Z Reflects On Public Scrutiny That Daughter Blue Ivy Faced Over Her Hair

Jay-Z recently reflected on daughter Blue Ivy Carter’s stunning dance cameos during Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour, as well as criticism that the child had faced in the past over her hair.

In a “CBS Mornings” interview released Friday, the rap mogul beamed with pride as he discussed the 11-year-old’s performances during her mother’s concert tour, which concluded earlier this month, and how the girl had evolved.

“I know how nervous she was, I know how frightened she was,” Jay-Z said.

He added that she was still eager to perform from the first tour stop regardless — including to tunes like “My Power,” which fittingly celebrates empowerment and self-love.

“What makes me super proud — and I still get goosebumps seeing her walk onstage — is because Blue’s been … born into a life she didn’t ask for,” Jay-Z said. “Since she was born, she’s been in scrutiny and public eye, and everyone having an opinion — even [on] a little girl, how she keeps her hair.”

He continued, “So for her to be on that stage and reclaim her power, and the song is called ‘My Power’ … you can’t write a better script.”

When she was just a toddler, Blue Ivy had been the subject of anti-Black commentary surrounding her hair and hair texture. In 2014, someone even created a petition calling for the child’s famous parents to “comb her hair.”

Beyoncé and Jay-Z also share 6-year-old twins Rumi and Sir Carter.

Elsewhere in his “CBS Mornings” interview, Jay-Z revealed what inspired Blue Ivy’s name.

The rapper said she was initially going to be called Brooklyn, but that he and Beyoncé grew attached to a nickname they gave the girl before she was born.

He said they would refer to Blue Ivy as a “blueberry” when they were given ultrasound pictures.

“Like, ‘Look at the little blueberry!’” he said.

Jay-Z Sheds Light On How He & Beyoncé Picked Blue Ivy’s Name

As Blue Ivy Carter approaches her twelfth birthday, her superstar father — Jay-Z — is sharing some long-awaited insight into his firstborn’s noteworthy name.

RELATED: Beyoncé Pens Sweet Message For Blue Ivy After Mother-Daughter Performance In Paris

He Says Blue Ivy Was Originally Supposed To Be Named “Brooklyn”

The “On to the Next One” rapper shared his commentary during a sit-down with Gayle King on CBS Mornings.

While chatting it up, Jay-Z revealed what he and Beyoncé had initially wanted to name their daughter, and it’s apparently a homage to the NYC borough where he was born and raised.

“It was supposed to be Brooklyn. That was the name that we had in theory.”

However, their plans swiftly derailed after they came up with a cute nickname after an ultrasound.

“When we got the little sonograms, [she was] super small there, and we was calling her ‘Blueberry.’”

He added, “It was like a nickname. For nine months, we were like, ‘Look at the little blueberry!”

As a result of the cute nickname, Blue Ivy’s name iconic name came about. The rapper declared, “It just was natural. We just took the ‘-berry’ off and just called her Blue.”

The Roomies React To Jay-Z’s Revelation

Beneath The Shade Room‘s upload on the matter, the Roomies came thru to share their reactions to Jay-Z’s revelation.

One user going by @creatively_chi humorously expressed her disbelief over the inspiration behind Blue Ivy’s name.

“All this time we were thinking Blue’s name had some type of deep meaning behind it, and you mean to tell me her name is Blue because she was small like a blueberry… A BLUEBERRY!?”

Additionally, @mochahontas.__ got folks laughing by declaring, “all the girlies named brooklyn… You ain’t no divaaaaaaaa.”

Another Roomie, @sunnysscene, said she “thought it was symbolic of The Blueprint 4.”

“I thought it was symbolic of The Blueprint 4; Blue IV meaning his greatest album personified. I still think that…”

Similarly, @bashbaeby shared a whole account of how there has to be more to the story, citing her belief that Beyoncé had previously mentioned a “blue ivy tree” playing into the decision.

“There’s actually waaayyy more to that story too. Didn’t Bey say one day they were on vacay and she saw a ‘blue Ivy tree’ and saw that as a sign. (blue + IV…. Which is the Roman numeral for 4. 4 is their fav number. 4 also being the day Bey and Jay were born (9/4 and 12/4) and 4/4 is their anniversary.”

As for @grace.my.face, she proclaimed that Beyoncé “definitely said that was that man’s favorite color.”

“Beyoncé will tell us anything to get up out of her face…. She definitely said that was that man’s favorite color.”

Queen Bey rarely descends from her Heavenly tower to address us directly but it actually happened when she posted an influencer-esque unboxing video for her buzzy new fragrance ‘CÉ NOIR’ that ships in November.

In the now-viral video, Bey gives us a mall food court-sample of her lovable personality while presenting her elegantly designed fragrance bottle that will cost you $160.

“I’m super excited. This is my ‘CÉ NOIR’ unboxing and it’s finally here after years of work,” she gushed in the black and white video. “I wanted something to be monolithic and I wanted something to have a little bit of intimacy so right here you can see inside the soul of the perfume.”

Going full influencer, she sprays her “first spray” with hilarious “ooh” adlibs before giggling at her adorable “‘CÉ NOIR,’ say no more” play on words to wrap up the video.

According to her website, the fragrance is “created in France, encased in art, and crafted and designed by Beyonce” with notes including clementine, golden honey, rose absolute, jasmine sambac, Namibian myrrh, and golden amber.

Naturally, social media exploded with reactions to Bey’s surreal unboxing video that skyrocketed to 2 million Likes on Instagram.

The pleasantly surprising development comes just weeks after she announced her upcoming Renaissance tour film that takes over theaters Dec. 1.

According to a press release, RENAISSANCE: A FILM BY BEYONCÉ accentuates the journey of RENAISSANCE WORLD TOUR from its inception, to the opening in Stockholm, Sweden, to the finale in Kansas City, Missouri.

“It’s about Beyoncé’s intention, hard work, involvement in every aspect of the production, her creative mind and purpose to create her legacy, and master her craft.

Received with extraordinary acclaim, Beyoncé’s RENAISSANCE WORLD TOUR created a sanctuary for freedom, and shared joy, for more than 2.7 million fans.”

  • For the Broke Asses in the Ultra Cheap Seats: The Eras Tour in Movie Format Makes It Clear That Taylor Swift Is Still the Apolitical “Good Girl”

For the Broke Asses in the Ultra Cheap Seats: The Eras Tour in Movie Format Makes It Clear That Taylor Swift Is Still the Apolitical “Good Girl”

Billed instantly as a “three-hour career-spanning victory lap,” Taylor Swift’s sixth tour is, needless to say, her most ambitious yet. Part of that ambitiousness has extended to releasing it as a concert film while still touring the world with the production. Obviously, she’s not worried about losing any profits by making it available to the “broke asses” who couldn’t manage to get themselves to the real thing. And even to those who already did, but simply want to see it in an even more “larger than life” format (IMAX being designed to accommodate such a desire). As Swift says, “Too big to hang out/Slowly lurching toward your favorite city.” That she is, as movie theaters across the globe roll out the reel and proceed to endure what can best be described, rather unoriginally, as Swiftmania. Indeed, one wishes Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr would weigh in on the matter, but instead non-Beatle Billy Joel already decided of Swiftie fanaticism and the Eras Tour, “The only thing I can compare it to is the phenomenon of Beatlemania.”

Rob Sheffield of Rolling Stone tapped into part of why people are so, ugh, enchanted with the tour when he wrote, “Taylor Swift keeps building the legend of her Eras Tour, week after week, city by city, making every night so much longer, wilder, louder, more jubilant than it has to be. There’s nothing in history to compare. This is her best tour ever, by an absurd margin. It’s a journey through her past, starring all the different Taylors she’s ever been, which means all the Taylors that you’ve ever been.” The thing about that, of course, is, well, Swift hasn’t exactly been all that multi-dimensional over the years. Sure, she’s changed her sound from country to pop and dabbled with some musical styles in between, but, in the end, she’s still the Aryan wet dream wearing red lipstick. Steadfastly committed to delivering a good time without much of any true substance to say in her position of power. Not through the music itself anyway (unless one counts the forced feeling of “allyship” in “You Need To Calm Down”). Over every so-called era, that has remained the most constant of all—Swift’s singular focus on one non-political topic and one non-political topic only: bad boyfriends. And, sometimes, when she’s cresting on the high of being in love, “good” boyfriends…before they inevitably turn bad.

This is one of the key aspects of Swift’s “relatability quotient.” With the “everywoman” seeing themselves in her despite the fact that few “average” women are giraffe tall, thin, blonde and blue-eyed. The Barbie ideal, as it were. Once upon a time, this was embodied by Britney Spears, who experienced a similar level of fervor at her so-called peak (that word always suggesting, somewhat rudely, that a person will never be as good as they were at a certain moment in time). The fundamental difference between the two is that Swift has remained America’s sweetheart throughout her career, while Britney defiantly ripped off the shackles of that role when she shaved her head and, months later, gave a somnambulant performance of “Gimme More” at the MTV VMAs. Up until that instance, Spears had always been a consummate performer. Dancing, (mostly) singing and sexing it up for the crowd. She chose one year in her life to have a rightly deserved breakdown, and things never really went back to being the same for her.

In 2007, Swift (a Sagittarius like Britney) was eighteen, and had just released her self-titled debut one year prior. This reality seemed to reinforce that, when it comes to the music industry, there is always another young(er) blonde pop star in the making, waiting to take over for the current “hot thing.” And Swift would embody the same “I’m a good girl who does as I’m told” aura (that Britney initially did) for the vast majority of her career. Herself admitting, “My entire moral code as a kid and now is a need to be thought of as good” and “The main thing I always tried to be was, like, a good girl.” Even now, after “going political” (a.k.a. making one public statement against a Republican Congresswoman), it’s clear that what lacks most from Swift’s work, ergo her stage shows, is a message worth imparting. Of course, her fans and casual listeners alike will say that there can be no more important message than simply “making people feel good.” To a certain extent, that’s true. However, after a while, one wonders if Swift’s failure to say anything on the same level as a Madonna stage show is an exemplification of how the public no longer really wants to be challenged. “Preached to,” as it were. This, in some respects, is emblematic of the “algorithm effect” that has taken hold of society, with everyone seeing only what they want to see, and no “unpleasant” (read: contrary) viewpoints thrown into the mix. Including the one that would dare call out Swift for being anything other than perfection.

In this regard, too, she differs from Spears, who was far more derided for being a talented blonde girl, but with “nothing to say.” This being most clearly immortalized in an 00s interview during which she said of George W. Bush, “We should just trust our president in every decision that he makes and we should just support that, you know. And, um, be faithful in what happens.” Alas, Spears’ faith in a few patriarchal institutions has been shaken to its core in the decades since and, similar to Swift, she’s had a reckoning with the “good girl” she once thought she wanted to be in order to receive endless accolades and praise. For someone like Madonna, who provided the blueprint of the modern theatrical stage show with 1990’s Blond Ambition Tour, that was never a reckoning that needed to occur. She was always a “bad girl” from the start. In other words, a woman who spoke her mind without fear or inhibition. This is why one of her earliest stage shows, the Who’s That Girl Tour, addressed political topics ranging from AIDS to essentially directing the missive of “Papa Don’t Preach” at Ronald Reagan and the pope. No other woman, least of all in the hyper-conservative 1980s, would have ever dared to do that, and certainly not at the very beginning of her career.

And yes, it is Madonna, who was once marveled at for staying in the business for a paltry fifteen years, that has allowed for someone like Swift to exist in it for almost two decades without anyone questioning it. Because, as Madonna established, the idea of a pop star, particularly a woman, having many eras is merely a reflection of an inherently misogynistic public that expects to see something new in order to be kept interested in the same woman. Especially when there are more youthful options cropping up all the time. As Swift noted, “The female artists have reinvented themselves twenty times more than the male artists. They have to or else you’re out of a job. Constantly having to reinvent, constantly finding new facets of yourself that people find to be shiny.” This speaks to something Madonna said about the Who’s That Girl Tour: “That’s why I call the tour Who’s That Girl?; because I play a lot of characters, and every time I do a video or a song, people go, ‘Oh, that’s what she’s like.’ And I’m not like any of them. I’m all of them. I’m none of them.” In actuality, the real reason to highlight that title was the fact that she had a movie of the same name playing in theaters (briefly) the summer the tour was happening. A movie that was originally going to be called Slammer before then-husband Sean Penn ended up being thrown in the slammer himself and it seemed like it would be in poor taste.

Swift’s luck with movie roles hasn’t been much better than Madonna’s, but people seem to talk about the clunkers that are Valentine’s Day and Cats far less than, say, Body of Evidence or Swept Away. Both Swift and Madonna are, of late, focusing on what they do best, with the latter kicking off her own world tour the same weekend the Eras Tour film debuted in theaters. Perhaps an unwitting “flex” on Madonna’s part, as she still seems keenly aware that, of all the pop stars, she’s the only one willing to make a truly political statement during her shows. What’s more, no matter how “old” she’s gotten, she has always been an active participant in the choreography expected of a pop star/musical extravaganza. And so, while the Eras Tour film is deft in creating the kind of spectacle that allows the viewer to feel like they’re actually at the show (complete with annoying audience members singing along in the theater), perhaps what stands out more in the movie than it would in person is the lack of choreography that Swift herself engages in. Instead, she’s a master at the art of the illusion of movement as she struts frequently up and down the ample stage. Here, too, Swift can be differentiated from a “real” pop star in that she has always merely dipped her toe into what that means as someone who more strongly identifies with the singer-songwriter qualities that theoretically mean chilling at home and writing poignant lyrics without having to worry about executing a dance move correctly onstage. But this is where Swift makes it clear that, in the twenty-first century, a musician has no choice but to become the multimedia art project that Madonna always was from the get-go. A walking, talking embodiment of synergy. Even if an embodiment that has never truly “ate” (despite Swift’s recent comparisons to the likes of Madonna and Michael Jackson…stage presence-wise, among other ways).

The uninformed accusations that Madonna is jumping on the Taylor and Beyoncé bandwagon of doing marathon, theatrical shows is rather absurd considering this is what Madonna has been doing from the beginning, long before anyone else thought to put in the effort it requires. Particularly the effort it takes to endure the personal risk to one’s life and reputation by speaking out against the injustices of the world. This has not been received warmly by quite a few institutions, not least of which was the Vatican, who urged Italians to boycott Madonna’s Blond Ambition Tour for being blasphemous. In response, Madonna made a public statement in Rome during which she declared, “My show is not a conventional rock show, but a theatrical presentation of my music. And like theater, it asks questions, provokes thought and takes you on an emotional journey. Portraying good and bad, light and dark, joy and sorrow, redemption and salvation.”

As the Eras Tour film underscores, that’s not really what’s happening at a Taylor Swift show. And that’s fine, one supposes—it just serves as a reminder that what people go apeshit over often isn’t very thought-provoking. With Swift preferring to, instead, take a page from the name of an LCD Soundsystem documentary by just “shutting up and playing the hits.”

Beyoncé showing up for Taylor Swift’s movie premiere was a ‘fairytale’ | CNN

    CNN
     —

Forget about Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, she and Beyoncé are the true power pair of the year.

On Wednesday night it was the era of two queens when Beyoncé attended the premiere for Swift’s “Eras Tour” concert film in Los Angeles.

    Naturally, the internet went bananas.

Both women have reigned supreme this year with powerhouse concert tours that they are capitalizing on by bringing them to the big screen.

First up is Swift’s, which “due to unprecedented demand” opened with early access shows on Thursday and will have additional showings over the weekend.

Queen Bey, who recently wrapped her “Renaissance Tour” in Kansas City, has announced that her “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé” will hit theaters on December 1.

The women have been longtime admirers of each other and, early Thursday, Swift posted a video of the two of them together in a theater with Beyoncé tossing popcorn.

Swift wrote in the caption, “I’m so glad I’ll never know what my life would’ve been like without @beyonce’s influence.”

“The way she’s taught me and every artist out here to break rules and defy industry norms,” Swift wrote. “Her generosity of spirit. Her resilience and versatility. She’s been a guiding light throughout my career and the fact that she showed up tonight was like an actual fairytale.”

Given how often the world pits female superstars against each other, the mutual support of two of music’s biggest stars was a powerful statement.

The Hyper-Flattering Lipstick Beyoncé, Megan Fox, and SZA All Wear

A good nude lipstick is notoriously challenging to find. Nudes are tricky—you want a nude lipstick to flatter your skin color and undertones while adding a little extra something to your overall makeup. Too often, nude lipsticks can have the opposite effect of what you want—the wrong color may wash you out, clash with your skin, or make your lips look like they’ve disappeared. This is especially an issue with non-inclusive shade ranges.

That’s why opting for lipstick lines that offer extensive shade ranges is so important, especially when you’re looking for a nude. CTZN Cosmetics makes some of the most inclusive nude lipsticks out there, and it shows—all you have to do is look at the wide range of celebrities who use CTZN lipsticks.

Celebs like Beyoncé, Megan Fox, SZA, and more are counted as fans of CTZN’s Nudiversal Lip Duo. The lip duo, which is lipstick on one end and gloss on the other, comes in 25 nude shades meant to flatter all skin tones. Keep reading for the exact shades celebs go for.

I Asked Beyoncé’s Hairstylist to Talk Top Wedding Hair Trends, and She Delivered

The healthier your hair is, the better it will look on the big day. Kimble says she always talks about haircare in her consultations. “Six months out is a great time to start planning for that,” she says. “I recommend conditioning treatments so your hair is shiny and looking healthy.”

If you’re closer than six months away from your wedding, don’t panic. As Kimble puts it, “It depends on how much damage you have. I recommend good haircare anyway, getting married or not. Do something nice for your hair at least once and month. If you start at three months out? Great. You can get some really nice results in that time.”

Incorporate products like hair masks, serums, and oils into your haircare routine—anything that will boost moisture and shine. “I have an amazing shampoo and conditioner,” Kimble says. “It’s definitely hydrating, especially if you have textured hair. It helps keep your hair in great condition.”

Oh, and don’t do anything drastic right before the wedding. “If you’re going to get your hair colored, plan to do it two to three weeks before so your hair oxidizes,” Kimble says. “Even with cuts, you want your hair lived in. I wouldn’t do anything drastic right before the wedding.”

    Beyoncé unveils first trailer for

The Renaissance World Tour may have wrapped on Sunday night, but fans who missed Beyoncé’s live concert during its sensational 39-city performance circuit will have another opportunity to experience the show come December, when “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé” premieres in movie theaters across the United States.

“Be careful what you ask for, ’cause I just might comply. Tickets on sale now, in theaters 12.01,” Beyoncé wrote on Instagram Sunday night, pulling lyrics from “All Up In Your Mind,” one of the tracks off of the artist’s “Renaissance” record.

Her post accompanied a trailer for the upcoming film that teases clips from her performances along the world tour, as well as backstage moments and cameo appearances by her husband Jay-Z and their three children. The couple’s oldest daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, performed on the Renaissance tour as a dancer.

“When I am performing, I am nothing but free,” Beyoncé’s voiceover says in the trailer. “My goal for this tour was to create a place where everyone is free, and no one is judged.”

When does the film launch and how can I get tickets?

The Renaissance film opens on Dec. 1 in major cinemas, with tickets already on sale at AMC, Fandango, Regal Cinemas and Cinemark leading up to the big debut. AMC Theatres Distribution, which is handling the Renaissance film’s global release, called it a “theatrical concert experience” in a statement and said the movie will be shown at thousands of movie theaters, with additional locations outside the U.S. set to be announced at a later date.

The film will air Thursday through Sunday for at least four weeks after its premiere, AMC said in its statement, which will show an IMAX version of the Renaissance movie in addition to the regular format.

“RENAISSANCE: A FILM BY BEYONCÉ accentuates the journey of RENAISSANCE WORLD TOUR, from its inception to the opening in Stockholm, Sweden, to the finale in Kansas City, Missouri,” reads a description for the film on YouTube. “It is about Beyoncé’s intention, hard work, involvement in every aspect of the production, her creative mind and purpose to create her legacy, and master her craft. Beyoncé’s Renaissance tour helped define the summer’s pop cultural zeitgeist while generating so much in ticket sales that experts say it boosted local economies. Some estimates suggest the tour brought in a total of $2 billion.

The Renaissance movie announcement came on the heels of Beyoncé’s final show on the live tour, and follows the news last month that Taylor Swift’s comparably sensational, and profit-driving, Eras world tour would see its own theatrical run in U.S. cinemas, starting Oct. 13.

Beyoncé’s past concert films include  2013’s “Life Is but a Dream” and 2016’s “Lemonade,” released by HBO, as well as the 2019 Netflix documentary “Homecoming,” which chronicled her headlining show at Coachella the previous year.

Beyoncé Officially Announces ‘Renaissance’ Tour Film: “Be Careful What You Ask For”

Virgo season is upon us—again. Beyoncé’s Renaissance tour is headed to the big screen, the Grammy winner announced early Monday following the first reports of the film’s existence. She uploaded the trailer for Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé alongside the caption “Be careful what you ask for, ’cause I just might comply,” quoting her song “All Up in Your Mind.”

Released by the singer’s production company, Parkwood Entertainment, the film will reportedly blend live concert footage with “parts of the long-gestating visual album Renaissance and a documentary-style account of making the record and building out the tour,” as reported by Variety. Says Beyoncé in the trailer, “When I am performing, I am nothing but free. The goal for this tour was to create a place where everyone is free and no one is judged.”

At one point Beyoncé can be seen rehearsing alongside her oldest daughter and current backup dancer, Blue Ivy Carter, and fans also get a glimpse of Rumi and Sir, her twins with Jay-Z. “Start over, start fresh, create the new, that’s what the Renaissance is about,” she says.

The Renaissance film will hit US theaters on December 1. Tickets start at $22 plus tax, a paltry sum in comparison to the $322 average ticket price for the tour, according to StubHub data reported by CNBC. Plans for a movie have long been in the pipeline, as reported by Variety, with crews having been spotted filming footage in Beyoncé’s hometown of Houston last month. Mega agency CAA had reportedly been shopping the potential documentary to studios and streamers since September.

Beyoncé’s Renaissance tour, which beckoned celebrities and royals alike in a sea of silver outfits, began on May 10, 2023 in Stockholm, Sweden, and concluded last night in Kansas City, Missouri. It overlapped with Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour, which becomes its own theatrical attraction on October 13. The latter film has already smashed advance ticket sales records and caused at least five films, including horror sequel Exorcist: Believer, to shift dates. December new releases have officially been put on notice.

  • “9 to 5” With An Edge (That Is To Say, “Mexican Style”): Shakira Sticks It to The Man in “El Jefe” Featuring Fuerza Regida

“9 to 5” With An Edge (That Is To Say, “Mexican Style”): Shakira Sticks It to The Man in “El Jefe” Featuring Fuerza Regida

Inaugurating, however briefly, her regional Mexican music era, Shakira brings us yet another single designed to prepare us for her long-awaited twelfth album. And yet, if Shakira has conditioned us to understand one thing about her, it’s to expect the unexpected in whatever musical route she decides to take. Because who knew something like a corrido would be next in her wheelhouse. At the same time, after such varied-in-style hits as “Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53,” “TQG,” “Acróstico” and “Copa Vacía” earlier this year, nothing Shakira releases should come as a surprise. The only real shock being if she didn’t manage to release a bop…or a song that didn’t feature someone else on it (in this case, Mexican group Fuerza Regida). And this one not only delivers on that front, but also, let’s call it, the People’s Liberation Front (no relation to the organization named as such in countries such as Sri Lanka and Ethiopia). And, yes, like Beyoncé’s anti-work anthem, “Break My Soul,” Shakira is also coming from a place of having never really worked the kind of soul-breaking job she refers to in “El Jefe,” yet still does her best to sound as though she has (hence, the need for co-writers Edgar Barrera, Kevyn Cruz and Manuel Lorente).

But, in contrast to her erstwhile collaborator, Bey, Shakira is far more aggressive in her contempt for thankless, underpaid jobs and the overpaid fat cats who make work so unbearable for the other ninety-nine percent. Because she doesn’t sing a passing verse like, “And I just quit my job I’m gonna find new drive/Damn, they work me so damn hard/Work by nine, then off past five/And they work my nerves/That’s why I cannot sleep at night.” No, instead, the entire song is about work being a fucking scam/joke for anyone who isn’t in a position of power (usually as a result of birth lottery circumstances). And, talking of the nine to five schedule (increasingly outmoded at this juncture), Shakira officially outdoes the anti-The Man anthem that is Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5.” That’s right, it only took forty-three years for something as oppressor-despising (hidden behind a “jaunty” tone and rhythm) to come along.

What’s more, “El Jefe” mimics the narrative structure of “9 to 5” in terms of laying out all the rightful complaints from the beginning of the day. From the very moment one opens their eyes to the sound of the alarm that might as well be a death (of the soul) knell. So it is that Shakira opens “El Jefe” with lyrics that translate to: “7:30 the alarm has gone off/I want to be in bed/But it cannot be done/I take the kids at 9/The same coffee, the same kitchen/The same always, the same routine/Another shitty day/Another day at the office.” In 1980, Parton phrased that opening as, “Tumble out of bed/And stumble to the kitchen/Pour myself a cup of ambition/And yawn and stretch and try to come to life…/Out on the streets, the traffic starts jumpin’/For folks like me on the job from 9 to 5.”

Parton then serves up the iconic chorus, “Workin’ 9 to 5/What a way to make a livin’/Barely gettin’ by/It’s all takin’ and no givin’/They just use your mind/And they never give you credit.” Shakira feels much the same as she sings, “I have a shitty boss who doesn’t pay me well/I arrive walking/And he in a Mercedes-Benz [again, Dolly correlation]/He has me as a recruit/The son of a bitch/You’re dreaming of leaving the neighborhood/You have everything to be a millionaire/Expensive tastes, the mentality/You only need the salary.”

In the accompanying video, Shakira plays up the regional Mexican tone with a Texana aesthetic that comes complete with cowboy hat, cowboy boots, leather fringe skirt, bombastic belt and some zapateado stylings intermixed with her own renowned “hip work.” Directed by Jora Frantzis, who has already dabbled with Latina mamis in the past (i.e., directing videos for Jennifer Lopez and Cardi B), scenes of Shakira on a horse that taps its hooves to the beat (something that deserves a visual effects award because that can’t be real) are quickly interspersed with scenes of immigrants on a train making their way, presumably, to the U.S. border. Where, as Shakira describes, they’ll be met with working conditions that can best be described as glorified slavery. No wonder she’s quick to urge, “Stick it to the man” in between scenes of warehouse workers (played by Fuerza Regida members) carrying too many boxes on their shoulders (perhaps a dig at Amazon, as famed for its “low” prices as it is for never giving warehouse pickers a bathroom break).

Soon, we see Shakira and Fuerza Regida joining the other aspiring Americans on the back of a boxcar as Shakira continues to speak on her rage regarding racial and class inequality (for the former is directly related to the latter, particularly in “anyone can be anything” America). Shakira, too, seems well-versed in the fact that it’s just as Dolly said: “It’s a rich man’s game/No matter what they call it/And you spend your life/Putting money in his wallet.” Ergo, “What irony, what madness/This is torture/You kill yourself from dawn to dusk and you don’t even have a writing.” That last word a botched translation from “escritura,” which can also mean a deed (as in: to property) or a “document”/“papers” (as in: the legal “right” to be somewhere).

For good measure, Shakira also adds another dig at Gerard Piqué by calling out his father with the insult, “They say there is no evil/That lasts more than a hundred years/But there is still my ex father-in-law who has not set foot in the grave.” So much for a temporary peace between the two exes (yet perhaps it’s only fair considering Shakira took aim earlier this year at her ex mother-in-law through a carefully-curated witch display). But this song has nothing to do with getting revenge on an ex (unless it’s an ex-boss). No, it’s all in service of buttressing the proletariat…or at least comforting them by assuring that someone is very aware of what they’re going through (even if from their own perch on Millionaires’ Row).

Which is why, at the one-minute, forty-four-second mark of the video, things take a turn toward the indoors, with Frantzis focusing on the fat cats (literally fat, obviously) themselves as they sit at a banquet table. And what’s on the menu? Why, the proletariat, of course! A.k.a. Jesus Ortiz Paz’s (Fuerza Regida’s lead singer) head on a platter, John the Baptist-style. What the fat cats hadn’t bargained for (just as Franklin Hart hadn’t bargained for Violet, Doralee or Judy), however, was a calmly irate Shakira showing up to walk on their table and approach the so-called “jefe” at the head of it with an expression that says, “I’m the jefe now, bitch.”

As for the mention of her former-turned-current nanny, Lili Melgar, by declaring, “This song’s for you/They didn’t pay you compensation,” well, that’s another direct hit at Piqué. Who apparently fired Melgar after she tipped Shakira off to a “third presence” visiting their house all the time before she finally clocked the suspiciously diminished contents of the jam jar

The last shot in the video returns to a defiant-looking Shakira (dressed in her all-red cowgirl ensemble—because, sooner or later, the oppressed becomes the oppressor, right?) on her horse as she stares into the camera. As though daring the jefes of the world to try to keep her or her “kind” down. But, no matter who you are or where you’re from (to paraphrase the Backstreet Boys), there is always common ground to be had in the shared experience of how much work blows chunks (at pretty much any pay grade, to boot).

For even the white men known as Blink-182 once said, “Work sucks, I know.” And so does Shakira. Or at least she can “get into the headspace” of knowing, if “El Jefe” is any indication. Thus, the only thing that could be more triumphant than this anti-work anthem is an official mashup (à la “Numb/Encore”) of it with “9 to 5.”

  • It’s Confirmed: These 10 Bags Are Having a Moment Among the Celeb Set

It’s Confirmed: These 10 Bags Are Having a Moment Among the Celeb Set

Unlike other luxury houses that start with haute couture or ready-to-wear lines and then expand to accessories, Bottega Veneta, from the jump, was in their bag (literally). Though the Italian fashion house was founded in 1966 by Michele Taddei and Renzo Zengiaro, it has remained a symbol of understated luxury worldwide because of its emphasis on craftsmanship. For the atelier, it’s not just a publicity stunt to champion artisan techniques; it’s a part of their history. Case in point: their signature woven leather technique, intrecciato. The braiding technique put the brand’s bags on the map, but the long legacy of this luxury house isn’t the only reason it’s stayed on it. In recent years, we’ve seen the brand’s rich archives reimagined through various creative directors, including the recently appointed Matthieu Blazy.

Since his debut collection in F/W 22, Blazy has managed to weave together the legacy of this house into the modern world through his contemporary take on the intrecciato weave—we’ve seen it applied to knee-high wader boots, tailored pencil skirts, and, of course, handbags. While there have been numerous items by Blazy that have blown up, none have done so quite like the Andiamo Bag. Debuted on the S/S 23 runway, this bag is characterized by its timeless top handle shape with a sliding cross-body strap, metal knot hardware, and supple leather that comes in 10 colors. Additionally, the bag comes in three sizes, making it one of the most pragmatic purses to purchase on the market—at least in the eyes of the celeb set. In the past few months alone, this bag has already been spotted on the Michelle Yeoh, Jacob Elordi, and Hailey Baldwin Bieber; it likely won’t stop there. With so many people (even stars) craving pieces that embody the “quiet luxury” aesthetic, this bag will only get buzzier.

  • Beyoncé Reportedly Took a “Nice Break” In French Polynesia for Her Birthday

Beyoncé Reportedly Took a “Nice Break” In French Polynesia for Her Birthday

What did you do to celebrate your birthday this year? Maybe a roller rink skate party with your mom springing for skate rentals for all your friends, or maybe a low-key shindig, cake and candles? Maybe someone made you pasta. Or maybe you convinced thousands of people to dress how you wanted and pay money to see you, and then took a hot second to jet off with your family and touch some sand?

Beyoncé reportedly chose that last option to ring in the big 4-2 earlier this month.

People reported, based on an unnamed source, that Bey jetted off immediately after her September 4 show in Los Angeles (also known as The One Where Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner Made Out and Did Not Adhere to the Dress Code) and enjoyed some downtime with her family in French Polynesia, where she rented “several private villas” for herself and her family.

“It was a nice break for Beyoncé,” the source told the mag. “The tour has been intense. She needed to recharge for a few days.”

Bey and her husband, Jay-Z, reportedly got in plenty of quality time with their kids, 11-year-old Blue Ivy and 6-year-old twins Rumi and Sir.

“They enjoyed the beach, had family dinners, and engaged in several resort activities,” the source said. “Everyone had the best time.”

After the break was over, the singer’s sold-out Renaissance world tour reconvened in Vancouver on September 11.

And if you think Bey skipped cake, nuh-uh: She shared photos of a disco ball-shaped confection on her Instagram, as well as silver birthday balloons. Gotta stick with the theme, always. That’s just the Virgo way.

  • Beyoncé, Taylor Swift reporter jobs added by Gannett, America’s largest newspaper chain

Beyoncé, Taylor Swift reporter jobs added by Gannett, America’s largest newspaper chain

Gannett, America’s largest newspaper chain, is looking to hire two full-time reporters with strikingly specific beats. One needs to be a connoisseur of “Lemonade;” the other should be an expert in all things “1989.”

The media company wants one journalist who will exclusively “chronicle the music, fashion, cultural and economic influence of Beyoncé” and another who will “capture the music and cultural impact of Taylor Swift” for USA Today and The Tennessean. Both newspapers are part of the USA Today Network, which is owned by Gannett. The job openings were announced this week.

The ideal candidate for the “Beyoncé Knowles-Carter Reporter” position is “an energetic and enterprising writer” who can capture Beyoncé’s effect “not only on the many industries in which she operates, but also on society,” the posting says.

Beyoncé is currently on her Renaissance World Tour, which, by some estimates, will rake in a total of $2 billion. The 32-time Grammy Award winner’s tour is due to end on October 1 in Kansas City, Missouri.

Similarly, the company wants a Swiftie who is “an energetic writer, photographer and social media pro who can quench an undeniable thirst for all things Taylor Swift.”

The opening comes as Swift is also in the midst of a wildly successful world tour. Her Eras Tour has grossed hundreds of millions of dollars and is credited with boosting local economies. Swift and AMC Theaters are also releasing a film about the tour in October. All the while, she continues to rack up awards and break music records

Both jobs require a willingness to travel extensively and a journalist with a voice “but not a bias,” according to the postings. In addition to a resume, applicants will have to submit a video cover letter.

As news of the Swift reporter job spread Tuesday, Gannett came under criticism for its decision to offer such specific positions after announcing hundreds of layoffs and widespread cutbacks last year. The company eliminated 20% of its journalism jobs between 2021 and 2022, according to the Boston Business Journal

Prior to the company’s Beyoncé job listing, Kristin Roberts, Gannett Media’s chief content officer, said in a statement to CBS News that USA Today Network is “committed to serving our communities across America with journalism that is essential to millions of readers, viewers and listeners. And that includes providing our audience with content they crave.”

“As Taylor Swift’s fanbase has grown to unprecedented heights, so has the influence of her music and growing legacy – not only on the industry but on our culture. She is shaping a generation,” Roberts said.

  • Wanted: Taylor Swift and Beyoncé reporters for U.S.’s largest newspaper chain – National | Globalnews.ca

Wanted: Taylor Swift and Beyoncé reporters for U.S.’s largest newspaper chain – National | Globalnews.ca

Just one day after announcing they’re on the hunt for a reporter to cover all things Taylor Swift, America’s largest newspaper chain has now posted another niche reporting job, covering none other than Beyoncé.

According to the job listings, each writer will work principally for the Tennessean newspaper and USA Today, but their content will be distributed across the entire Gannett news chain.

    Story continues below advertisement

Both Swift and Beyoncé have major world tours underway. Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour is set to end next month, while Swift’s Eras Tour will run through the end of 2024.

And while it’s not rare for newspaper chains to hire entertainment critics and music reporters, it’s not often that a reporter is assigned to cover a single artist.

However, Beyoncé and Swift both hold a huge amount of cultural and economic sway and their fans – the Beyhive and Swifties, respectively – are known to financially bolster entire cities when the performers come to town.

“At this point, Taylor Swift is basically her own economy,” one Vanity Fair writer put it.

The impact of her tour has been felt in every city she has stopped at, selling out stadiums, gracing fans with a 44-song set list spanning her nearly two-decade-long career and injecting millions of dollars into local economies with the gravity of her star power.

In a Federal Reserve report published in July, the agency found that “May was the strongest month for hotel revenue in Philadelphia since the onset of the pandemic, in large part due to an influx of guests for the Taylor Swift concerts in the city.”

Performing just two shows in Colorado led to a US$140-million boost to the state’s GDP for the year, according to a report from the Common Sense Institute.

“The totality of Taylor Swift’s U.S. tour could generate $4.6 billion in total consumer spending, larger than the GDP of 35 countries,” the report states.

The qualifications for each Gannett job read the same, and each listing invites applicants with “a voice – but not a bias” to throw their resumes into the ring. The hire will be expected to report not just on the details and highlights of each singer’s tours, but also on their fanbase, their impact on the worlds of music and business, as well as their cultural relevance.

    Story continues below advertisement

Each job requires the reporter to have a willingness to travel extensively, too.

And while the listings have excited many fans and budding journalists, there’s also been a fair share of blowback, with many pointing to Gannett’s extensive layoffs in recent years, which included shedding six per cent of its news division last December.

  • Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner at the Beyoncé Concert

Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner at the Beyoncé Concert

A headline such as “Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner at the Beyoncé Concert” seems like the stuff of an AI-generated sentence arbitrarily spit out from some other non-related prompt. And yet, the sentence became a reality (whatever that means anymore) on September 4th (no less than Beyoncé’s birthday), at the final Inglewood date of the Renaissance Tour. Although many had speculated that the duo’s “romance” had already fizzled out, it seems they were just biding their time until they could unveil it in a more bombastic official capacity. For it’s no secret that the Kardashian-Jenner clan is known for making the announcement of their “relationships” in a big way (with none of these men ever deterred by how many children the K-Js might already have from previously failed “interludes”). And, considering, Jenner was also joined at the concert by her momager, Kris, and half-sisters, Kim and Khloé, it appears as though the outing is ultimately made for The Kardashians episode fodder.

This, undoubtedly, isn’t something that would bring much joy to Beyoncé, who has never been known for being all that “chummy” with Kim, whose marriage to Ye obviously didn’t sit well with Jay-Z or Bey, with both skipping their wedding back in 2014. And yet, Kim did manage to make the cut for being invited to Beyoncé’s forty-first birthday last year, so who’s to say that she hasn’t “made peace” with any ill will toward the constantly-seeking-attention “reality” star? Though one can imagine her vexation upon learning that the biggest headline to come out of her birthday show was not the fact that Diana Ross (sort of) sang “Happy Birthday” to Miss Knowles onstage, but that Chalamet and Jenner were rather heavy on the PDA as a means to confirm their “relationship” is still going strong, and now in a public capacity.

Indeed, even in an article that offered the headline as “Diana Ross Sings Happy Birthday to Beyoncé During Surprise Appearance at Los Angeles Tour Stop,” the topic quickly shifted to the presence of the Kardashians, with Kim’s appearance also stealing some of the spotlight as well. But her “sparkle” was nothing compared to the video footage seen ‘round the world of Chalamet’s displays of affection toward Jenner, some of which were often a bit half-hearted as he actually tried to watch the show and kissed her with his eyes open while Jenner had her back to the stage (how sacrilegious!). The image of Chalamet looking at Beyoncé while kissing Kylie can be interpreted as one would like. One interpretation being that Jenner has already siphoned some of his soul out and he’s growing more dead-eyed and complacent by the day.

Jenner, whose skin tone is “on-brand” with the blackfishing that all the Kardashians are known for, is a clear step down from one of Chalamet’s first famous girlfriends (and an actual person of color [“POC” sounds too much like “POS”]), Lourdes Leon. A.k.a. Madonna’s daughter a.k.a. Chalamet is probably never going to do better than that, fucking for clout-wise. Yet that hasn’t stopped him from seeming to relish the so-called perks of orbiting the famous-for-being-famous brood. After all, he hasn’t ever gotten half as much publicity for any of the movies he’s starred in, no matter how critically acclaimed most of his performances have been (even if often on the one-note side). Yet it seems a new “era” is on the horizon for Chalamet…one that might be his “flop” period (Wonka does, in truth, look like a harbinger for that). For it’s no secret that there’s something of a Kardashian-Jenner hex upon any man who dares “enter the fold” (pardon the sexual innuendo of that phrase). With Ye being the most overt example of that amid the various Get Out comparisons that were made before he went entirely off the rails.

Perhaps that’s why Jenner has transitioned to “white meat,” as it were, “taking one for the team” by switching it up from the fam’s usual fetishization of Black men as a means to be able to tell the public, “See? We’re not like Rose Armitage.” Chalamet doesn’t seem to mind that he’s an inevitable pawn in their game called “Social Climbing With Our Pussies.” The more they can infiltrate the world of Legitimate (Low) Art (complete with Kim now starring in a season of AHS), the more people will forget that they have no talent of their own, other than, of course, commodifying their names in new, ever-changing ways.

And as the two “canoodled” to the tune of “Alien Superstar” (a song choice that’s almost too on the nose for the illuminati theories that abound with regard to any celebrity and their “romantic pairings”), Beyoncé’s extra-sensory “B” feelers could likely intuit the attention being detracted from her performance—and on her birthday! Echoing the effect of Taylor Swift showing up to Jack Antonoff and Margaret Qualley’s wedding festivities, the attention strayed slightly too far from the main attraction for the main attraction’s taste. Worse still, Chalamet, in “indie boy” fashion, smoked cigarettes at the concert like some sort of heathen defying a holy place of worship.

But of course, Beyoncé is “graceful” and “humble” enough not to be bogged down by such ego-tripping trivialities, n’est-ce pas? At least, that was meant to be the takeaway from her focus on Diana Ross’ “cameo,” running across the stage to embrace her (which was met with typical Ross coldness) and gush, “You are so amazin’—this is the legendary Diana Ross! There would be no me without you and thank you so much for all of your sacrifice and your beauty and your grace. Thank you for opening doors for me.” Because, yes, the ego of every celebrity can’t help but make things about them. Much to Ross’ repressed chagrin. As if women who came before want to be reduced to nothing more than a “stepping stone” for the current “hot thing” (Madonna also knows a bit about being diminished in that way under the guise of being exalted).

Thus, while Beyoncé might have given the performance of a lifetime, it was all, in the end, mitigated by this “odd couple” taking their “romance” to the proverbial stage as well. With Jenner adding to the “theater” by engaging in her PDA antics right next to where her murdering ex, Travis Scott, was also standing in the “VIP area.”

So it is that point one went to the Kardashians for the ongoing celebrity battle to grab attention (even causing people to let persona non grata Lizzo’s presence go, um, largely unpublicized). Perhaps Beyoncé can get back to being the true spotlight at her upcoming Vancouver (a place with far fewer celebrities bound to materialize) show on September 11th. Except that, well, the date of September 11th is always a spotlight stealer in and of itself. Even so, it’s far less “stealing” than Kylie and Timothée, who are so different that they don’t even have monikers that can be turned into a “clever,” one-unit couple name. Unlike Bey-Z, Jayoncé, etc.

Beyoncé hosts final show, celebrates birthday with 70,000+ fans at SoFi Stadium

Beyoncé celebrated her 42nd birthday on stage in Los Angeles on Monday in front of a star-studded audience. Diana Ross appeared on stage at SoFi Stadium to sing “Happy Birthday,” which brought Beyoncé to tears.

“Thank you so much. You are so amazing. This is the legendary Diana Ross,” Beyoncé told the crowd. In 2019, the roles were reversed when Beyoncé sang “Happy Birthday” to Ross at her 75th birthday, Entertainment Tonight reports.

Several audience members at Monday’s concert – including stars like Kim Kardashian – captured the moment on video and shared it on social media.

Kardashian was joined by her sister Khloe Kardashian, mom Kris Jenner, daughter North West and niece Penelope Disick. They also posed for photos with Jeff Bezos and his fiance, Lauren Sanchez.

Beyoncé’s daughter Blue Ivy Carter also appeared on stage during the concert, as she has for most of the Renaissance World Tour. The 11-year-old, whose dad is Jay-Z, is following in her parents’ performing footsteps and regularly joins her mom on stage to dance to her song “My Power.”

Following the release of her chart-topping album “Renaissance” last year, the star announced The Renaissance World Tour with stops starting in Stockholm on May 10 and ending in New Orleans on Sept. 27.

Before the tour kicked off, Forbes projected Beyoncé could rake in $2.1 billion from the performances.

Is Beyoncé trying to evade taxes despite a net worth of USD 500 million?

In a surprising turn of events, the IRS has issued a stern response to Beyoncé’s claims of an unjust $2.7 million tax bill, sparking a legal battle between the Grammy-winning artist and the government agency. Despite her massively successful $500 million Renaissance World Tour, the IRS stands firm in its assessment, denying any errors in their calculations.

    Beyonce tax bill controversy

Beyoncé, a 41-year-old music sensation, made headlines when she publicly voiced her objection to the IRS’s tax bill. According to her, the IRS demanded an additional $805,850 in taxes and $161,170 in penalties for the year 2018, along with $1,442,747 in taxes and $288,549.40 in penalties for 2019. She also claimed that the IRS intends to add interest on the debt until it is paid in full. This led to Beyoncé taking legal action, challenging the IRS’s assessment within the framework of the U.S. Tax Court.

    Beyonce challenging the IRS assessment

In her petition, Beyoncé sought to challenge the IRS assessment and rectify an alleged error in their calculations. She argued that the agency’s numbers were incorrect and had prevented her from claiming deductions worth millions of dollars. Specifically, she pointed out that the IRS had misunderstood the “Depreciation of $3,326,103” reported on her 2019 tax returns.
